  • Leafing through the internet of the 80s. Transformers get their heads on straight, GI Joe blasts off into space, the partly metal, partly real space cops keep the peace in the Limbo Galaxy and when there's something strange in the neighborhood, who you gonna call?

I definitely remember looking through the catalogs that year. I still have a 1988 JCPenney Christmas catalog.
I would even marvel at all the toys that I didn't want to imagine the play value. I was too focused on GI Joe at this point but I did get the Captain Power ship. I got one of those Sky Commanders.
I wanted the Defiant but I'm glad I didn't get it. I don't see it being that practical for playing G.I.Joe.
JCPenney (or Penney's) was like a lot of big department stores where it barely had toys in the store throughout the year, but would add a little toy department at the lead up to the Christmas shopping season. The catalogs really just served as a guide for seeing what was out there. Many people could just get them more easily and at lower prices in local stores, especially smaller stuff like action figures.
That Christmas was when the Nintendo Entertainment System really got popular after being out for two years.
I had a Pogo Ball. I really wanted it and could handle it well. Either that Christmas or the next one was when I got a Snoopy Snow Cone Machine. I used it once and it would forever sit under the kitchen sink. It might still be there.

Also in retrospect, I didn't have much use for the Mamba, either. The Fang II from 1989 served that purpose just fine. GI Joe aircraft had a tendency to be too big for what they were and the smaller stuff seemed good enough. I got the Phantom X-19 but the smaller X-30 would have been more versatile.

This brings back a lot of memories for me. My mom had a Penney's charge card and we had a local store. She would order from the catalog and buy in store. A lot of my toys came from JC Penneys I spent a lot of time looking through these catalogs. M.A.S.K. and G.I. Joe were my favorites back then, but I did have the ALF sleeping bag. Thanks for sharing this.👍

It is interesting what they had for adult collectibles before the current big wave comic book and cartoon fans became adults. The selection amounts were certainly smaller, but I remember like it showed silent movie & early shorts were big (Chaplin especially, and Laurel & Hardy but also Three Stooges started to be). Wizard of Oz, Civil War, Red Baron (and biplanes), John Wayne (and wild west themes), circus themes and trains. Even Unibersal Monsters to a degree. Sports was always a thing and probabky always will be. Back then if you had told me my superheroes and etc would be even bigger pop culterally I never would have believed it. Makes me wonder what will take its place in years to come.

On the first pajama page you talk about, that Transformers one you didn't recognize is Menasor I believe, from the cover of Transformers #22 (Marvel 25th anniversary cover)
