  • * Let's Have a Chat! AND THEN Go Shopping in 1976! * Sears Christmas Catalog Wish Book! *
    Hi Friends!
    Look what I got my hands on - a 1976 Sears Christmas Wish Book!! The ebay ad said, "Slight water damage and some pages are crinkly." Well, that has ASMR written all over it!
    I also talk about moving up the RUclips reveal with the family to Christmas. I explain why. Thoughts?
    It's a raining, blustery day here in Northern California! Exactly what we need!
    Hugs from me to you!
    Very warmly,
    Jeannie

    You’re not doing anything weird. In fact, what you are doing is quite rare. You are able to connect with youth through their modern medium, without being “cringe.” In fact you’re quite the opposite. Genuine, honest, kind hearted and you embrace the age gap which so many people have a hard time coming to grips with. The kids of today lack the type of energy you are conveying, and I have no doubt that leads to your success. That’s not to say you aren’t entertaining other age groups. You certainly are! I hope your children are supportive. Congrats. Great speaking voice - soothing - … and you’re also interesting because even though you are speaking of your past, it’s selfless.

    This was just great - thank you Jeannie!
    I love hearing the stories from the 70's my grandmother tell - South Africa only got television for the first time in 1976, and my grandparents were some of the first people in town to get a set and put up a TV tower. Despite the bad reception, they used to get so many visitors over the weekends who would want to look at this new wonder, that my grandfather took his harvest yellow Mercedes Benz out from the garage for fear the floor of the lounge above it might collapse 😂 (this happened once at a different house...)
    The TV set also had wood siding and no remote control - my grandmother still had it 40 years later and I remember when I first watched The Sound of Music with her, I had to get up to turn the volume button up or down on the set itself.
    She also still had a microwave with wood siding and turnable controls when I was small, and she said that when microwaves first came out here, someone at a cafe heated up a whole can of food in it and that's how the community found out why you shouldn't do that 🙈
    We take modern technology and colour schemes which do not give you headaches so much for granted these days! It's great to hear from people who lived through the time of innovations.

On a side note, I found you through Rea Moon and am glad I did. You both bring maturity and elegance to a niche that started with a bunch of kids from my generation. What makes vintage catalogue browsing very interesting is the cost comparisons (adjusted for inflation) in today's dollars. Color television was still quite expensive and even then, was not yet in every home. Many folks would "rent to own" such appliances. The TV at $349 in 1976 would convert to the equivalent of about $1700 in 2022. Not cheap, even for a less than premium brand. Microwaves were outrageously expensive too, and were still a novelty. My family didn't get our first color TV until 1974 when my dad had "saved" enough to purchase outright. It was a Motorola "Quasar" with 'solid-state works in a drawer' that had the first transistor module panels that would easily slide out if it necessitated repair. He made his decision based on the ratings of Consumer Reports magazine. I also recall "Zenith" was another popular top brand of the era. These gadgets were almost as expensive as buying a car in those days.

      Yes! I agree!

    • @therealJamieJoy
      @therealJamieJoy Год назад +2

      I looked up the price of the microwave and was floored. $279 in 1976 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $1,461.25 today, an increase of $1,182.25 over 46 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.67% per year between 1976 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 423.75%.

    • @c3cubed
      @c3cubed Год назад +3

      @@therealJamieJoy Yes, microwaves were actually out of reach price-wise for most until the early 1980's. I recall the first one to the domestic market was the "Amana Radar Range" and it cost almost $500 in 1967. For comparison, one could buy a brand new 'entry level' car for between 2 - 3 grand in those days. So imagine how expensive that toy would have been for the kitchen. Remember too, that credit cards in those days were only given to folks with a very high and long-established credit-score, so purchasing expensive items was only within the realm for those that could truly afford them without creating a crushing burden of debt. A very different world we live in now.

    • @therealJamieJoy
      @therealJamieJoy Год назад +2

      @@c3cubed We had a microwave in the mid 70s as did both my sets of grandparents. I realize how privileged my family was at times when I don't expect it. We didn't live ostentatiously but did have a lot of home luxuries. For example, we had one of those HUGE Tvs that sat on the floor with a real wood cabinet and built-in speakers on each side. My father had a reel-to-reel deck for music.I don't think my families used credit cards, but they did have "charge cards" for various shops and they were paid at the end of the month -- like American Express type cards but for a few local department stores, including Sears. Thank you for the conversation. I have learned a lot looking into these exchange rates and looking up old products.

    • @c3cubed
      @c3cubed Год назад +3

      @@therealJamieJoy Yes, charge cards were popular, but only for those with good credit. I do remember my mom using a "Chargex" card in dept stores... It was the precursor to what later became Visa.

    Hi Jeannie, I am reading a journal from 1975 and 1976 and the writer talks about items she bought from a catalogue. I have been able to source the catalogue and the exact pair of shoes and dress in it! Unfortunately it is a PDF version so I can't flip through, but it is so exciting to see the things that people wore. Many of them can be picked up in vintage fairs and the shoes are like those I buy nowadays. I love your videos! And the cat of course.
