The Walk - EP 99 - Why build two stations for a town that didn't exist? - Ashey, Isle of Wight

  • Filmed on a very windy Good Friday, I am back walking on the Isle of Wight.
I am in the tiny hamlet of Ashey, just outside Ryde, and I am following the little know chalk pit branch that came away from the mainline at Ashey station, and ran through a tunnel in the downs, and into a chalk pit.
This section of the Ryde to Newport line is now a heritage railway, and as a kid I never understood why Ashey even had a station, as it is basically in the middle of nowhere, with just a handful of houses, even now.
Little did I know, that Ashey actually had two stations. Ashey, and Ashey West.
So why did this non-existent place, need two railway stations?
The answer lies with a Scotsman by the name of George Young.
*Big thanks to my mate Tom Kellett for removing most of the wind noise!

Visited the Isle of Wight a couple of years ago, I'd like to visit again one day, lots I didn't get to see. Interesting story about the racing, and great pictures too.

Great little film Gareth , thanks for your dedication. The more I learn about the history of the railways, the crazier it all sounds . They built huge lines and tunnels in less time than we seem capable of doing today . In fact everything today seems to be so long and drawn out, slap dash and tatty looking. No doubt you've seen the Ryde interchange and new walkway on the Ryde pier and how long its taken to assemble this engineering miracle ? I think they built the pier in less time . Once again thanks , and keep on truckin; good buddy 👍👍💖💖

Crossing the main road into the chalk pit you take your life in your hands. Especially climbing the stile on the pit side.

Made it back from Utopia, Texas, for the eclipse and hanging with Darren Grimes (you know him!). That Ashey location did look like a good location for a town.

Hayup Gareth fabulous cinema photography I'm liking the tunes too.
It's surprising that no ones tried to build houses in more recent times based on a historical permission.
Well done to your Dad! good work.
On the subject of land there's a little known angle in respect of small holdings that have long since disappeared if land is purchased an you find it's been such a site there's a mechanism to apply for a restoration of that status based on its historical record!
So land that has potentially an agricultural tie an pre- established rights! for a dwelling!
So we need maps showing small holdings an then find a registered account of the same.
I watched a short of yours an you had a track by idlewild an I like them kinda forget how much an it caused me to think of other bands around that time, one of which I can't recall there name I get brief parts of a melody an some words but not enough to do a search! Ahhh it's driving me crazy, still I've got a single somewhere but much of my music is in boxes behind even more boxes from a big move years back, I think I'm going to have to search it out just for peace..
Other than that, this is a great short stomp! Cheers.

It is beautiful round there. Glad they never built the houses, to be honest!

Yes it looks beautiful round there, I'm glad they didn't build on it to!
My reference to historical restoration of small holdings is a chance for offgriders to find farmland that may have a possibility of also a home.
It may help counter the rewilding too, lots of little farms like back in the day.
Are there many stations that are no longer in use but on still existing rail networks? There's one or two around here.
      Cheers

You can. I think it's a request stop, so you would need to tell the guard otherwise they just pile on through.
