Your reason for giving a 9 on practicality is exactly why I think it deserves a 10. If this had a third row it would be a Pilot.
Yeah the fact that it don have rear seats gives it a subwoofer a temp spare tire and way extra storage and if you buy a full spare and take out the temp thats even more storage you could live in this thing tbh i give it a 12/10

The best one so far 😂😂
Doug is a type of a guy who boats in honda on lake Tahoe
I just bought one. My wife has a 2018 pilot and I love that vehicle, but we didn’t need two “suburban family” vehicles. I’ve always wanted a more sporty version of her Pilot, so basically I am the market they were going for. They nailed it as far as I’m concerned. I don’t think anyone looking for rugged off-road capability is seriously looking at this vehicle. Passport is more competition for crossover Subaru/Ford/Mazda/Kia/Hyundai/VW etc., not a jeep or 4Runner. I traded in a Subaru Outback incidentally. Passport is a great highway and in-town car, and can handle trips on the gravel roads in the mountains where I live with ease. I’m excited to drive it in some snow too. Plus, it’s a Honda, so 10/10 reliability score. Loving it so far.
Doug: Practicality: 9/10 stopping short because it has no 3rd row.
Me: Bro this is litterally called a midsize 2 ROW SUV
Yes, and because it has only 2 rows it is less practical than an SUV with 3 rows. The DougScore is not weighted depending on a vehicle's class, price, advertised market position, etc. Every car is ranked on the same scale. This is why, for example, most 2-seater sports cars Doug reviews get a "1" or "2" in Practicality. That's just how his scoring system works.
@@chrisstaub5880 yeah let's not pretend that Doug actually has a system
Definitely depends on HOW you define practicality. Three row SUV’s loose a lot of cargo space. If you don’t need that third row for people, practicality would suggest that maybe you’d like a larger suv without a third row so that you’d have more cargo space.
@@fuzzycraptastical well no, you put the 3rd row down and you get much more cargo space than a 2 row.

Doug obviously doesn’t review many Honda’s because a lot of these “quirks” have been around for years.
Agreed, I love his reviews but he definitely seems a bit out of touch with regular people cars
Not everyone knew they’re in the new Passport though.
So, what’s the reason for the changeable Outside Temp Display?
Brodie Thomas or Honda doesn’t have many quirks
The temperature thing is calibration in real life temperature. I wish my truck had it because it seems to always be off by a degree or so with the actual temp.
These are surprising capable off road. Besides for heavy rock crawling, for 99% of trails this vehicle can get you there. It's weakest factor is ground clearance that can be overcome with a small lift but for the 99% that isn't even necessary. V6 that sounds great, lot's of space. Decent gas mileage. Reliable transmission and engine. This baby has a LOT going for it.

The A in that oil life is Honda’s way telling customers what will be their maintenance program when the car needs maintenance. In this case “A” means just an oil change and “B” means the car needs an oil change and a tire rotation. My moms 2012 civic has the same thing.
Here is a chart and link to website describing the different maintenance sub-symbols that Honda uses. They actually change by location as well, I am in Canada and "B" is a brake service. www.rensselaerhonda.com/honda-maintenance-minder-codes/
A means oil change without filter. B means oil and filter change. 1 is tire rotate. 2 is filters. 3 is trans service. 4 is timing belt. 5 is spark plugs and valve adjust. 6 is rear diff service on awd models. 7 is brake flush. Now you know

Having had a Passport for over 2 years now, I can confidently say it's a much more enjoyable vehicle than this review makes it look. I find it quite fun to drive, especially with the i-VTM4 AWD system. It adds a rwd feel that I don't get in most AWD vehicles. Easily the easiest car to drive in winter I've ever had.. it just goes and usually without almost no slippage in snow. A step up from the 2013 Outback I had. And there's so much subtle practicality about it. The dash is so flat and huge. I've easily set up my company laptop and a portable monitor AND still had room for a plate with lunch on it.. all on the dash. The wide open flat center console space is great too and offsets any negatives of the minivan style armrests. It has a ton of interior cabin and storage space. It's super quiet inside. If I put down the seats, I could probably comfortably sleep in the back. Overall fit and finish felt amazing on mine. Still not a single rattle or squeak anywhere. It's only 2.5 years but no service trips yet except for oil changes and scheduled maintenance.
I find the interior to have a nicely plain and consistent look with all of the knobs and buttons I love and find more efficient than touch controls, and it has quite a nice navigation system (Garmin). My only complaint is with sticking 20" wheels on it as standard. 19" smooths the ride quite a bit.
@Kevin K. These vehicle reviews are HIGHLY subjective. I test drove a Toyota 4Runner and Honda PP in the past week and found both vehicles to be quite enjoyable. A few years back I bought a Mazda CX-9 because everyone talked about how awesome it drove. That wasn't my experience. I found the front seat tight and turbo engine annoying. It's all about preference and not what these guys say.
Yeah it’s cause it’s Doug Demuro. He had an incident with some Honda PR people and has been beefing with Honda ever since. I think he told pieces of the story in his Civic Type R video. Notice how for any other car, some interesting quirk is a quirk, but for the Passport it’s “an odd decision from Honda.”
I recently acquired a 2021 Honda Passport Elite and I am very happy as well as impressed with it. I had owned Subaru Outbacks and a Jeep for the past 18 years and the Passport has them beat hands down.

"I'm not exactly sure what effect these offroad modes actually have..." so What exactly do you do here?
You would think he'd do some research...
Yeah, I think this is one of those reviews where it really shows how full of himself he's gotten. Not knowing one or two obscure historical facts/minor features of a car you're reviewing is one thing, but to review a SUV that's main selling point is it's off-road capabilities and not know (or even ATTEMPT to figure out) what each of it's different driving modes change is just plain unprofessional. It completely defeats the purpose of the review... He even had all the employees of the dealership nearby that he could have asked for even some basic info. I really hope he reads the comments of this video and pulls his head out of the clouds, because he seems to have forgotten that, after the iconic and ultra-expensive supercar/truck reviews, his reviews of relatively new "general public" vehicles have the highest view counts. Obviously the supercars and rare quirky vehicles are more entertaining reviews, but he does such a thorough breakdown of whatever he reviews that reviews of vehicles like this are only slightly less interesting, even if for a different reason.

I bought a 2019 Passport Touring in Dec 2019 for about 37.4k plus several accessories needed for handicap and taxes, totaling about 42k. I was driving a very low mileage 2003 Acura Cl-s bought new, but I'm 74 with a leg injury which made climbing in into and out of the Acura difficult and painful. Didn't want or need the larger 3rd row seats. Didn't want a Jeep falling apart faster than the warranty could keep up with it. Didn't want to pay an extra 12k for a Lexus SUV. Live in the Pacific NW, where a car with good management on slick road, ice, snow, etc is a plus, and the AWD control system on the Passport is better than almost any other on the road. I'm not into heavy "off road", but I do want to go down trails and do light bush whacking for my landscape photography, now that I can't walk more than 100 feet at a time. Why not an Acura RDX? I don't want the little turbo engine - it's trouble waiting to happen, not worth saving 2 mpg. I don't need to pay an extra 6k for less interior space and a dash control package that looks like the product of congress between a BMW and a Werlitzer jukebox. Especially if the gauge gives an inaccurate reading due to engine heat or something.

The A under the oil life monitor is what type of Honda Service is recommended at the next oil change. Acura has used that system on their cars as far back as 2006, perhaps earlier.
My 2019 pilot has the same drive modes, green light, & Econ button as this
Doug the type of guy to order a cheeseburger with two bottom buns
Thats how you make a sourdough jack. The best burger from Jack in the box.
Way back, worked at McD's. I don't remember why, but I did this for my break meal a few times. Unlike Bush's vs Grandma Browns, I'm indifferent to bottom or top buns. Regarding beans: Grandma browns with Hoffman franks. Bush's are like shitty refried but don't really work with tacos as well as they should.
Doug, the type of guy to hand over his Honda to airport security when asked for his passport
😂🤣
Bluebury RS That was really good
Mr. Demuro may I see your passport?
“Oh I parked it on the garage”
The “A” in the oil life screen is a service code that you can look up telling which service the vehicle needs. This way, when you take the vehicle to the dealer for service, they don’t tell you that you need a service that you really don’t (ex. Changing the cabin air filter).
"Earth Dreams" is a philosophy that for Honda Manufacturing to tie into their goals of zero waste to landfill.
Im quite shocked that Doug didn't know asimo. Even more, Honda has been using the Earth Dreams for a decade, but apparently Doug didn't know that either.
Honda used Earth Dreams on their Formula 1 cars in 2008 from what I remember at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix but the marketing slogan has probably been around longer than that.
I'm shocked he didn't know about Porche's "Puppy Meadows" engine already exists too.
I was thinking that as well, since I have an Earth Dreams engine in my 2015 Honda. Also almost all the interior quirks and features are the same as my 2015 as well..
Because he's a fucking ignorant. He throws lame jokes instead of actual interesting content, to cover up his lack of knowledge. And he's very not into Honda, so can't expect the guy to flatters the car
You're right, they had no sponsors and just a picture of the earth from space wrapped around the race car. It was back when Jensen Button and Rubens Barrichelo were the drivers; the season before they became the Brawn GP team under Ross Brawn when Honda pulled out of Formula 1 due to the global recession. Last underdog team to win both the Drivers and Constuctor's Championship. @@countryroads21
Has a doughnut instead of a proper spare tire and they call it rugged...
DOUGhnut
First time I've ever seen someone refer to a space saver as a "doughnut." Now I'm hungry...
I knew the passport was in trouble when I saw the air quotes on the rugged in the title!😂
Thanks Doug....is it better ground clearance than 2019 Ridgeline? And is it same or better offroad than Ridgeline?
Doug is RUclips's "Rugged' new car reviewer.
Said no one ever.
Well said
Doug is the type of guy to call Asimo an Astronaut
Right! Dang it Doug, that's Honda's mascot, Asimo!
My Honda CR-Z has the "Change Outside Temperature" setting as well. I use it because my temperature was consistently reading 2 or 3 degrees above forecast temperatures, so I adjusted.
Doug the kind of guy who's never heard of driving at the beach before
Doug is a type of people that reviewed a honda in his main channel and reviewed a rare porsche in his secondary channel.
I think a lot of cars’ temp. gauges are inaccurate so Honda added the temp adjusting feature.
Rather fix the temp reading.
@@CRVgarage highly accurate instruments are very expensive.
Great video. Cool car. A lot of these features are in my 2017 Pilot, including the Off-Road Modes. 6:25 They change throttle response, the AWD vectoring, and AWD Front/Rear Bias. The Sand mode has a electronically 'locked' rear differential.
theguythatcouldfly Yeah, it's not a feature exclusive to the Passport, unlike what is said in the video. The iVTM-4 is the same as Acura's SH-AWD, just tuned differently. It's one of the better AWD systems. I have a 17 Pilot, too. The 16s have it too. The Ridgeline also has it.
I just came back from a cross-country trip, during which I was constantly speculating about my next trip and what car I would want for it. I was stuck between the idea of getting a ridgeline with a bed topper or a pilot and taking the rearmost seats out, but was disappointed with the ground clearance and off road features of those vehicles. Then Honda announced the passport, and it was like they heard my specific thoughts and made a car just to suit my needs. Spacious rear cargo room, slightly lifted suspension, enough power and reliability of honda. I would take this over a wrangler or 4runner any day, because it's easily practical on the road and perfect for car camping while also being able to get to some campsites that my little Jetta couldn't on my trip.
On one hand I hope this model does well because I want Honda to make more cars that fit the "practical for every day street driving while also being capable of mild off-roading," but on the other hand I hope it does just okay on the market so that the aftermarket value will be less and I can purchase a used one for a better deal. Kind of like the Element, I hope this car gains a cult following by people like myself who don't need a 4runner's beefy, body-on-frame design and locking diffs but want something with more ground clearance than most family-oriented SUV's out there.
4runner SR5 looks better.
no it doesnt toyota is the king of old grandpa design
Kevin Its not old grampa. The toyota 4runner is the definition of true off road suv. Its got the basic needs you need to be comfortable but not too much where once the electronics break, it ends up in the junk yard.
The thing with the 4Runner is that you're buying a 15 year old vehicle.
Bikerider 100 Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the 4Runner is overrated
Doug the type of guy to take his girlfriend out on a date and then give her a Doug score.
Deadpixel the type of guy to make an unoriginal joke.
And we'd watch that review too. :-)
👌👌👊👊🥳🥳
A is to signify that when the car shows a service notification (ex. 1A) A means oil change, 1 means tire rotation. Also that isn’t an astronaut, that’s Honda’s robot.
Coming from someone that has owned a rock crawler, FJ cruiser, Tundra, F250, Silverado 1500, and Toyota 4runner, the Honda Passport has one of the most advanced AWD systems. A quick flirt with the snow and I had a difficult time breaking the tires loose, and had gobs of traction. I would give their AWD system a 10. Very impressed. However, Doug is pretty critical of interior and exterior flaws, and failed to review the performance of this vehicle in off road conditions, which is one of the advantages of this vehicle. So, Doug, let's give a complete review of this vehicle and take it in the snow or sand. You might be impressed.
