    Thanks. Recently changed a few rads for columns etc. One old rad I removed when I removed the pipework and had a go adjusting the locksheild with a spanner it broke clean off. Today I am balancing the system and one locksheild was stuck, I prefer to use those twist caps to see if I can do it by hand first and this one wasn't budging. A bit of spray lube and gentle turn with the spanner moved it. You have great videos, you address a lot of minor problems not on RUclips!

    I have just bought my first house and found that the radiator in the office room was stuck completely off, couldn't budge it and was so cold! Found this video and managed to get it going in no time, lifesaver thank you soooo much! Just one question - turning the nut also turned the pin that was stuck,however I assume the nut should really be left screwed down tight. The pin and the nut don't seem to be able to be turned independently of each other. Is it ok to leave the nut unscrewed a few twists as long as it's not leakng? It's an old house and the valve is jammed up close to the radiator so it's extremely hard to get a good angle on it for adjustments!

    Worked for me. Had to take the gland nut off and wait a minute for the oil to soak in but then it freed. All my other rad valves are locked up too due to my lack of an annual maintenance cycle which I shall now attend to. One problem is my valves are horizontal and close to the floor so very hard to get a normal spanner to turn. Is there a valve socket spanner tool to accommodate this situation?

  • @reviewer3448

    What size is the adjustable spanner that you are using? The rad without a TRV is on full blast near the thermometer and making noise. I'm just wondering if turning it down would give the rooms downstairs a chance to heat up before the thermometer switches off and also reduce the noise. Also I've undone TRV top with the screw in it, and I'm trying to turn it, but it's not budging with stanley 74-266 pliers fat max pliers - I'm wondering if it's because the nose is too short on it and need more longer nose pliers. Would me reducing the heat effect it negatively at all? Many thanks, Robert.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  9 месяцев назад

      The spanner is a 6 inch adjustable. You cannot adjust or turn a TRV valve., only thumb wheel valves. Reducing the heat to it will force the room stat to require more heat, so it would heat the rest of the house more.

    The parents have a few radiators that haven’t been turned on since they bought the place over 40 years ago. (Small toilet & end of corridor). The valves are unsurprisingly jammed. They live in a hard water area. Is there a risk that trying to unlock them like this could crack the valves and lead to a leak? Would hate to attempt this over Christmas when I’m home and flood the place or leave them without heating for the winter. Any thoughts? Thanks a mill 🙏

    The lockshield valves are not always easily accessible - I have two with no room for pliers / hands. And then I found to my surprise that there are NO KEYS / WRENCH SOCKETS for this type of spindle (flat) - literaly NONE! How can this be, when they are so common and when usually there are specialised tools for about every odd job. But not for these. You want to turn the lockshield valve - use pliers...
    Ideally, I would need one just like those long t-bar stop cock keys. And so I ended up "manufacturing" the key of my own...

    Is this the old-style of valve, with a larger nut than most moderns fitting screwing on to the tail? If so, it's what I have on my old (imperial-sized) radiators. I'd really appreciate knowing what that fitting is called, and its size, as I'm in need of swapping old manual valves for new TRVs, and am not sure what I should be searching for. I suspect removing the old tails could be quite difficult, so a direct swap would be ideal if I can find the right size TRV. You referred to them in your other video (ruclips.net/video/fws55kOE5aY/видео.html), but didn't specify the size of fitting. Thanks.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  Год назад +1

      If you are swapping out for TVRS then you can only get the standard 15 mm size with the small 15 mm nut not the old fashioned 22 mm nut as you have. So you will have to remove the old tails to fit them.

    • @VC57UK
      @VC57UK Год назад +2

      @@dereton33 I took the plunge, bought a radiator spanner and three low-cost TRVs and drained down the system. Thankfully, I had a 3ft metal pole to hand as it would have been impossible to unscrew the old tails without that extra, carefully applied, leverage on the key. All now fitted and working, with Sentinel x400 in the 30 year old system, with a second drain-down and some further TRVs and inhibitor scheduled for a couple of weeks time. I really appreciate your no-nonsense videos, and now feel brave enough to rebalance the radiators afterwards, too.
