  • This is an easy way how to fix leaking shut off valve, less time and money. Most of the time you may see this type of valve uses in steam system; especially, the Radiator steam shut off valve and water supply shut off valve.

    Thank you SO MUCH for this video! We own a 2-family rental built in 1918 with radiator heat. A beautiful home but so much maintenance! The boiler repair people quoted $1,800 to replace two radiator shut offs because of the potential liability if they damage the system by torquing the pipes to replace shut-offs. Now I can repair this myself!!!
    You saved us!!! Thank you!! And my lovely tenants will be so happy!!🎉🎉🎉

    Thank you sir for this detailed demonstration of the tape application! We have all steam radiators, and I can't find the screw to the radiator cap handle. Mine is the only one that isn't heating up in my bedroom. The gasket looks to be dirty and worn out after years, so it seems the PVC tape might do the trick! I'll try it and hope for the best. Thank you for going through the motions to show how it's done right!

You explain everything in such detail for those of us who are trying to do this ourselves, without paying a plumber exorbitant amounts just to show up. Cannot thank you enough. Will try this. Do you have info. on the vertical steam pipe coming up from the floor and going into the ceiling? Are these pipes hot to the touch? Should they be wrapped for any reason?

    Decent fix but graphite packing, or spool wick will work. Most important **valves belong either open all the way or closed all the way.**

    Very good explanation. But I still have a doubt. Did you turn off the water in the house to deal with this? Here at home there are two valves, is there no risk of removing the nut and the core coming out?

      This is a steam valve, you must turn off the boiler. If it's a water valve, you must isolate or shut off water supply. Thank you.

      Get your flashlight and look around and the bottom of radiator. There will be a valve there. Wear your gloves and close the shut off ( Turn the valve clockwise until it stops). If this valve can not stop steam flow, then call your landlord. Thanks for watching.

  • @T289c
    @T289c Год назад

    Wrong. The valve must always be completely OPEN or completely CLOSED. Never halfway. There needs to be space for the condensed water to go back down to the boiler. Otherwise you will get banging and more leaks. Your air vent on the other side of radiator needs to have the smallest hole if that radiator is close to the boiler.

    • @CHILEtv012019
      @CHILEtv012019  Год назад

      Well, in the past, vent valves can be adjusted from min to max. But nowadays, all the vent valves sale in stores have a fixed air flow. Therefore, you can adjust steam flow by using shut off valve to delivery steam. The banging that you are talking about is caused by water hammer in steam system. To avoid water hammer, you need to check how you mount the radiator (recommend an angle) and steam pipes so that condensed water drains back to the boiler.
      Ok, thanks for your comment.

    • @T289c
      @T289c Год назад

      @@CHILEtv012019 Sorry you are 100% wrong. Single pipe steam system must have the valve completely open or completely closed. You are also wrong about the air vents. There are multiple sizes you can get depending how far from the boiler you are. There also adjustable vents that change the size of the hole on the vent.

    • @CHILEtv012019
      @CHILEtv012019  Год назад

      I used to buy vent valves in Home Depot, there is only 1 size. When I asked them, they said 1 size will fit all. For this reason, I adjust the shut off valve to control steam flow and it works. I understand that the shut off valve is either fully close or fully open, but you can use it as a flow control valve if you can't find an adjustable vent valve. If you know where to buy it, it is great. I didn't know they sale it. Thanks, Thomas Gerdon.

    • @T289c
      @T289c Год назад

      @@CHILEtv012019 No. Never do you use that valve to regulate the heat. Every plumber knows this. There are many sizes of air vents. Home Depot is not the place for getting the. A real plumbing supply has them. If you buy a cheap air vent it will fail in a year or so. But the steam valve is designed to be completely open or completely closed. Turning it halfway is misusing the valve, that is not how it is engineered.
