Fix that leaking radiator valve easily. No plumber required. A small reel of PTFE tape will do the job! Save yourself pounds and do it yourself. Al shows you how.
Well I'm 55 seconds into this and hooked for life. It's nice to listen to someone who obviously knows what he's talking about, He speaks with such assurance and confidence you know your time isn't going to be wasted listening. Four minutes seems too short so I'll move onto the 15 minute one next. So many many thanks dereton33. Mike. Well 3:18 in. So that's how you use Ptfe tape? I've been diligently keeping it 'flat' and wrapping it round for years. Never thought of rolling it up. Never too late to learn I guess. Thanks again. Incidentally 1023 videos. Seriously !! Life's too short to watch them all. Any with dancing dogs? You do seem to have a lot of trouble with your water works. He says with a smile. Mike 91 dislikes. No pleasing some people.
I just fixed a leaking radiator valve with the help of your brilliant video. Pressure in combi boiler stays up again and the house is cosy and warm for the winter to come.Thank you so much!
Absolutely brilliant. Just turned on a radiator that's been off for forever and it began leaking. This video got it fixed in minutes. Thank you so much!!
Just took a radiator off in the spare room as we are decorating for our baby due in July. Had a slight leak after I took off the rad. This video was very helpful. Thanks.
Big word of thanks from Dublin. Had this exact issue, quoted minimum of 120 euro inclusive of call out charge! Watched the video, went to the local hardware store, done the job in about 5 mins!!!! For anyone watching, for the valve nut, it is a size 12 spanner!!! thanks a lot
Many thanks Al, rad valve started dripping all over the carpet after I opened it again after painting the radiator. Thought I was going to have to call a plumber out but your easy to follow video had me sorting it out in 5 mins (luckily I had some ptfe tape underneath the bath) Would never have tackled this without your video.
Sir - I salute you! I've never had much confidence with plumbing but you inspired me to fix the dripping valve in my bedroom. It's fine now and cost a total of 69p (PTFE tape from Wilkos). Without your help, I'd be £50 down and several sleepless nights. You are a Prince among men!
Yes Mr Dereton33 this was a great fix. I did it the other night and it sorted things out a treat. It saved me the hassle of ringing my central heating care company and arranging a fix. BOB ON FELLA.
You're a life saver! Not literally, but your videos have helped me fix a stuck mixer tap and a leaking rad valve now and probably saved me a lot of cash! Thanks for uploading these, much appreciated.
Thank you so so much! Just moved into a place a couple of months ago and I'm on my third leak. Exactly as you described, with the water leaking out of the valve. No more expensive plumbers...I'm off to get someplumbing tape!!
Wow I'm glad I found your tip! It's not the expense, a new valve is few pounds, it's the nightmare of having to drain and refill the system. Avoided, as the minor weep is now stopped. Thank you!
I took off a rad for decorating but when I put it back the lockshield valve leaked. I guess it didn't like being locked off for two weeks. I thought I was going to have to drain down and replace the valve. This tip allowed me to fix it. Thank-you for your helpful video!
Thanks Al - managed to fix my leak eventually. In the process though I stupidly managed to dislodge the valve body and water was spraying everywhere. After what seemed like several minutes of panic trying to screw it back in, I realised it was a left-handed thread that needed to go anticlockwise!
Big thanks to you and your excellent videos. Clear instructions, calmly delivered. I have watched a few of them now and they always save the day. In my area plumbers are charging £80 per hour so simply cannot afford them at the moment. So I think a donation is in order.
Your videos are great, never touched any plumbing before but having to move some old rads in a house to fit new joists so watched your other video. Went to do it and nearly every valve leaked so this too has been a massive help. Thank you
thank you for posting this, in the day an age of really expensive call out and piss taking plumbers telling you parts needs changing this was really valuable and helped solve my problem
Thanks!!That worked a treat, saved a small fortune, and a heap of time and hassle, even had the PTFE tape in, so had it fixed and radiator back in use 10 min after watching your video. Thanks again!!
Really helpful video. Wish I came across this sooner instead of trying to collect leaking water in a tub for a week and trying to work out a fix. Was nearly about to remove the radiator and change the valve. Thank you.
Just did this on both dripping ends of my bathroom radiator - worked a treat - once I managed to get a stiff screwless cap pulled off and the nuts open - phew!). Thanks very much, Derton.
Thanks Al! Was dreading draining the system to change the valve, but no need now, your video was an eye opener and save me many an hour replacing the whole valve :-)
I have a leak exactly like this one and I am going to tackle it tomorrow , after your great video here , I am confident it will work just fine , thanks for sharing your knowledge with us
I really just wanted to say how invaluable your information has been to the problems ive struggled with now i can use this detail to fix things 😀 thankyou so very much nick
Thank you !! After having new flooring fitted & then refitting my rad I was very upset to see the valve leaking into the new floor. But this solved it. I used about 3 inches of tape. Had trouble with a spanner in the nut, but a 12mm socket did the job.
Thank you so much for the helpful video!! It worked like magic and I'm so grateful to you as everyone else would be when their rad starts to leak at midnight. Wonderful work you do, this is real help, thank you again.
Thank you very much for this tip...having removed two radiators for decorating one started to seep at the flow control...thought I was going to have to drain the whole system to replace the tap. Thanks again.
Just tried this now, 48p for the PTFE tape from B&Q and less than 5 minutes work. Heating's on now and doesn't seem to be leaking anymore, will keep an eye on it but looks alright so far, could have saved me a good few quid there!
We've an old what-I-think-they-call gravity fed system, and with the heating switched off water was still leaking steadily from the top of the lock valve with the valve switched fully off. So I didn't think this solution was going to work, thought I'd have drain the system/call in a plumber, but in hope I removed the nut, wrapped a 10" of twisted plumbers tape round the lock, rammed it down, spanner back on and blimey... the leak has gone. Thank you!
So, after the first success of following your rebalance video, I noticed the kitchen rad valve was a leaky, just slightly, and like an earlier commenter I just needed to tighten the nut, it was very loose, which must have happened when I switched it off for the rebalance (I haven't touched this valve in years so it must have loosened when I closed it) Once again, many thanks!
Wow ! This is brilliant Thank you so much Al I have had been stressed about what to do to my leaking radiator and until now I coudnt see where this trickle was coming from ... I cant wait to get that PTFE tape up !
Thank you Thank you Thank you.... mine has been leaking for years, I’ve just decorated & got new carpets and was ordered to fix it.. just about to get a giant adjustable spanner thinking it was the Olive and tighten the life out of it.. tried your way and it worked.. Thank you 🙏🥳👍
Woke up to water flowing from the valve destroying my floor. Actually had that PTFE tape lying about the house I must have bought years ago :0 Couldn't budge the nut on the other side of the radiator so had to do it in a flood and it took loads of tape. Seems to be ok now so many thanks!!
Thank you for posting this video, did what you said and the leak is fixed. was about to call a heating engineer, but your video saved me from doing that, thank you.
Thanks for the video, had a leaky valve on the toilet towel heater. Opened it up and saw it was a different type of valve, so dried it and watched it leak from just above the thread for the nut. Put some PTFE tape around the tread and up over the leak, replaced the nut and now no leaks, thanks.
fantastic your video was a a great help - I just managed to stop the radiator flooding the living room at 8pm on New Years day! - a visit to plumbers merchant in the morning for a little plastic screw thing that was cracked should fix it - thanks so much! :)
thanks. was not sure if i had to turn off the water or not. I first tried turning the nut down a half turn or so, until the leak stopped. The leak stopped, and did not need plumber tape. Did not need to call plumber. No new parts or even tape. Yeah! :)
If the thermostatic rad valve is leaking from the pin I am afraid that it cannot be repaired and has to be renewed. I do have a video on my channel on how to renew a thermostatic rad valve . Kind regards, al.
HI dereton33,i have one radiator leaking like that which i will try to fix . it looks easy the way you have shown in this video.thanks a lot my friend..
Great video wish I could be your apprentice you come across as a nice guy and so easy to learn from. I'm doing my first radiator swap at the weekend swapping for a new one purely by watching your videos wish me luck :D
dereton33 update... today I took off the old radiator no problems I have the new one coming tomorrow. I have a question... I forgot how many turns it took to turn off the Lockshield Valve as i wasnt the person who capped the radiator off (new house just moved in) so what would your recommended turns be to turn Lockshield on? Thank you and good work :)
Don't worry to much about that just turn it on fully when you first fit the radiator then when every radiator is hot scale it back down to about one full turn making sure it still keeps hot and that all the other radiators do so as well, if it needs more heat then just keep turning on a bit more at a time until you are happy that it is hot enough and that all your other radiators are also ok. Good luck with it, Al.
Thank you so much for your video Al. You explained it really clearly. Thanks to you, I have just fixed my leak for 50p! (for the PTFE tape). Hooray! :)
Thanks so much for this quick fix demonstrated so well. I followed your advice and solved the leaking valve within a couple of minutes Like others, I was dreading the prospect of draining down in the winter or using one of those expensive freezing kits.
Hello Al. Thank you very much for this video. It was very informative and it saved me calling a plumber. Looking forward to learn more from your videos! Keep the good work up! Cheers
Best way to get it off is to use a flat wide blade screwdriver and wedge it under the bottom of the cap then using the base of the valve as something to push on, leaver the cap upwards and away from the valve. Worse case scenario is to saw through the plastic cap and break it away, when you have fixed the valve, just buy a new cap.
@@dereton33 Top man. Did the repair yesterday morning, and fingers crossed it seems to be holding :) That water that was leaking looks incredibly brown and rusty! Needs a good flush at some point.

This has happened twice and with different radiators, so I don't know what's going on. Thank you for your help.
Thank you ! A very helpful video. Unfortunately it looks as tho my leak is definately coming from the lower nut, the one at the top of the white pipe coming up from the floor and not from the higher point in your video. What to do ?
Hi E Austin , you can take a chance and do it live , if you do then get plenty of old towels and wrap around the bottom of the pipe also some one who can squeeze out the towels into a bucket for you. Then loosen off the bottom nut that is leaking and pull it past the olive , then wrap some PTFE tape around the olive about 4 times , then do the nut back up .. There is a freezer kit you can buy if you would rather not take the risk or you can simply drain the system , Whatever you decide good luck with it. Kind regards , al.

Thanks Edgar , your type of video responses make it all worth while.

Excellent Video you are the Man Really simple fix Thank you. my nut was a sealed unit with a brass body but still worked the same.
Thanks Bez.
Thanks for the advice, just to mention for the nervous, the system does not need draining for this fix.
No worries!
No leave them open , there is more room to lift the gland nut out of the way while you put the ptfe tape in.
Kind regards,
al.
Do you need to shut the valve first before removing the gland sleeve?
No
This video saved me thousands, its so easy!!!
just fixed all leaks, great video!
Nice work!
Really helpful video, thank you. Question: does it matter whether the valve is open or closed for this procedure?
It does not matter.
@@dereton33 Top man. Did the repair yesterday morning, and fingers crossed it seems to be holding :) That water that was leaking looks incredibly brown and rusty! Needs a good flush at some point.
What about with a thermostatic valve (TRV), can you unscrew the nut above it? The top has a button on it that presses up and down. Thanks!
No they cannot be repaired.
I was reading on the screwfix forum that you can repack a TRV valve, maybe you can try it for a video?
Thanks Al, I was so happy to find an easy fix, that you give a very easy to understand demostration of. You are providing a great service!

Yet another informative video that cured my little leak...Thank you :-)
Thank you so much for your video. What usually happens is, when one of my radiators is leaking I also notice that the pressure in my combi boiler goes up slowly and I would have thought it would be the other way about. This has happened twice and with different radiators, so I don't know what's going on. Thank you for your help.
kpzcbttp You are right, the pressure should drop, the pressure vessel may be suspect.
dereton33 Thank you for your help, you are very kind.
useful video, thanks. Is it the same process if it's the lockshield valve that is leaking?
Yes.
Thanks for that! Just the problem I have. Just need to seek out the PTFE tape and do the deed. :-)
There is a freezer kit you can buy if you would rather not take the risk or you can simply drain the system ,
Whatever you decide good luck with it.
Kind regards ,
al.
