These knowledgeable speakers will serve the cause of peace and better understanding between the US and China, in these dangerous times of sabre rattling: Jeffrey Sachs, an American diplomat/academic who tirelessly advocates diplomacy in conflict resolution. Pascal Coppers, a Belgian with deep knowledge of Chinese culture and doing business in China. Prof David Kang, a Korean American prof who can unravel many false assumptions about China. I'm sure there are many many more that your viewers can recommend. My underlying premises is that without China and the US coming together, humanity is doomed. Why? Technology developments like AI will be used for war rather than for peace. Any miscalculation based on mistrust could spiral into Armageddon in hours ending humanity. Existential threats like climate change will be neglected. I hope Dr Kang will pursue the professed mission of Asia Society courageously.
There is never a doubt of George Yeo vast experience n knowledge on China and its historical extrapolation. But I have to disagree with his comment that US is the bedrock of ideas and designs n China is exceptionally prowess in manufacturing abilities. It is not true now, China has the most articles published on science and technology n patents over the last 5 years. A recent article from ASPI pronounced that China is ahead in 37 out of the 43 new technologies that would figure prominently in the Future.
East Asians still have remnants of toxic confucianism, where those perceived to have seniority abuse their position to anchor and pin down brighter talents. It's a serious problem in scientific and engineering endeavours.

"In our society today there is not enough of the feminine instinct, to see each for what it is and to help that person to interact with another person for what he/she is. The Mother cares for all." Refreshing to hear this. Something I have thought about my whole adult life. The feminine is missing from American politics and political power structure and whenever it gets introduced, there is a huge backlash, not just against the feminine aspect as "weak,' but against women themselves. I hope I live long enough to see this change and all will be respected and sustained, whatever our gifts and talents.
Mr Yeo's point about corruption is right on. Chinese People who have benefited from the corruption in the early years are usually ones pessimistic about the country's future.
This is the only point I disagree with. Corruption has nothing to do with Confucianism. Corruption has a greater relationship with human nature. For example, political donations are legal in the United States. It is tantamount to legalizing corruption. But the same goes for buying cups for $900 in the army and sheep for millions of dollars in Afghanistan, and the sheep are nowhere to be found. You can't say that the United States has something to do with Confucianism.
@@snowlost8233I think George Yeo is trying to find an link to Chinese culture, that does not exclude corruption in non-confucious societies which may be explained by the thanksgiving culture, or others.
@@snowlost8233 , Interesting, or rather intriguing, to witness that George Yoe not offer any logical explanation within the definition of causation as to why corruption is exclusively related to Confucianism. He simply pasted the two words "corruption" and "Confucianism" together, in pretty much the same way a lot of people would link a purely incidental occurrence of an event to another that is also incidental, and then immediately jump to force his conclusion onto the audience that the two must be related and one causes the other. For example, a dog was hit by a street car, when some dude was trying to strike up a conversation with a charming girl standing nearby and got refused. Then the dude concluded if it were not because the street car hit the dog, the girl would not have refused to carry any conversation with him.
@etbuch4873 you didn't understand..Confucianism teaches...ritual...protocols....It is embedded when you call on some...you hv to bring gifts...In China you can hv $ 20,000 MOON CAKE...WHY ? IT IS CAKE WITH GOLD embedded..
George’s understanding of world affairs is superb. Together with LKY and Prof Kishore their insights and knowledge on diplomatic affairs have greatly influenced and shaped the geopolitical situation globally particularly helping build bridges between China and the West whose understanding in this area were often superficial.
To Dr. Kang, how do you define over capacity? China only export a small percentage of the EV they produced. Compared to South Korea and Japan, whose auto industry heavily depends on exports.
I agreed whole heartedly with this speaker as geopolitics as currently orchestrated will not on its own create the platform for multicultural engagements to secure trust amongst its citizents

George Yeo is absolutely right and the U.S. should recognise China as an ancient, resilient and now once again, a global superpower. However, China should also introspect and ask itself why so many Asian countries turn to the U.S. for security assurances etc. China is THE power in Asia and will lead but should also be the security provider in the Asian Pacific region.
Too few questions from Audience. George has a reputation as pro china in USA. He is not pro china but bridge builder. West should send more students n tourists to the east.

China's economic success is at the heart of why the West has always feared and hated "communism"...even w/ a Chinese character. Capitalism (privately owned bus. and industries) cannot compete with industries and resources that are well managed by the central authority of a nation-state who have access to the collective contributions of their population. This is what capitalist have always understood, and now insert terms like "overcapacity" into the lexicon to divert from having to explain capitalisms failure to compete in the free market. It reminds me how they invented the term "whataboutism" to divert from having to justify brazenly hypocritical positions.

Could George comment on the recent fiasco on cooking oil in China, where his employer (former?) also owns Yihai Kerry, who has about 50% market share in cooking oil market in China. If he thinks that the CCP is so great in managing its country, perhaps he, as a former minister, would like to suggest to Singapore government to adopt China’s system of managing the country, especially in the food and drug regulation.
The competition between China and the United States is welcome if the extreme risks can be properly managed. Mencius said that should there not be any enemy states and foreign aggression from outside the country, the country often perishes. If we look back at history, the period of the Cold War coincided with the fastest scientific and technological development of the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as the fastest improvement in people's living standards.
Re the first audience’s question on US gov as a protector of human rights in South East Asia, you got to be joking. First of all, the US gov got no rights to talk about human rights. Are you so naive that you still believe that the US politicians care about anyone else other than their own political and economic interest? Look at how US politicians are supporting and funding Israel’s genocide on Palestineans, do you need further elaboration here? Secondly, US is a troublemaker everywhere they set foot on, including their very own soil which they conveniently robbed from the red indians. What a brilliant man. Mr. Yeo is new to me and I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon this conversation and Mr Yeo.
George will be a great foreign minister and a better candidate as PM for Singapore
Tq you Sir 🫡😇 for sharing your knowledgeable, understanding and explanation problems that we are facing now. Indeed a very Sad 😭 thing to see people's always creating unhealthy atmosphere among themselves. We need more leadership like yourself to bring more understanding, harmony and peaceful in this modern world.🙏🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿🌈❤
I salute George Yeo; a great statesman, philosopher and impeccable diplomat.
Dr Eric li and kishor watch their video very interesting
These three speakers are some of the bold people who dare to speak the truth of USA hegemony.
Clearly shown when one’s thought is not bias, constructive and clear articulation of truth flows
These knowledgeable speakers will serve the cause of peace and better understanding between the US and China, in these dangerous times of sabre rattling:
Jeffrey Sachs, an American diplomat/academic who tirelessly advocates diplomacy in conflict resolution.
He is in America talking to American...being Asian...have to give some sweet😅😊😂
It is nice to see an Asian, Dr. Kyung-wha Kang, as the leader of Asia society. Mr. Yeo, as always, it's great to hear you talk.
Thank you George Yeo
There are only two ways to lead: you either divide and conquer, or you build and unite😅
Superb conversation! Informative, thoughtful, nuanced. My understanding is deepened, my perspective broadened, my curiosity sparked. A privilege. Thank you. Best wishes.
"In our society today there is not enough of the feminine instinct, to see each for what it is and to help that person to interact with another person for what he/she is. The Mother cares for all."
Refreshing to hear this.
Mr Yeo's point about
corruption is right on. Chinese
People who have benefited from the corruption in the early years are usually ones pessimistic about the country's future.
Asia Society was founded and funded by the US. ASPI is a branch of Asia Society. They have a clear agenda that they have to adhere to.
George’s understanding of world affairs is superb. Together with LKY and Prof Kishore their insights and knowledge on diplomatic affairs have greatly influenced and shaped the geopolitical situation globally particularly helping build bridges between China and the West whose understanding in this area were often superficial.
The world would be a better place if the the us government has a figure like Mr Yeo
This should be how our today ministers should be - sort after , highly intellectual and thoughts leaders !
Give peace a chance.
Bravo Mr Yeo, Bravo!
You can be a winner but do not cheat.
You're referring to the Yankees?
Amazing person with such clarity & well read .... Just my utmost respect ... Easily among top talent globally along with Paul Keating of Australia & the likes
On competition and trade, every country protects its own industries. China has every right to act to protect its own industries.
I have to buy George 's book.
Always the best person to talk about geopolitics surely is George Yeo❤
George Yeo is absolutely right and the U.S. should recognise China as an ancient, resilient and now once again, a global superpower. However, China should also introspect and ask itself why so many Asian countries turn to the U.S. for security assurances etc. China is THE power in Asia and will lead but should also be the security provider in the Asian Pacific region.
Always enjoy George's intelligence
Always wonder why he is not a PM choice for Singapore?
Too few questions from Audience. George has a reputation as pro china in USA. He is not pro china but bridge builder. West should send more students n tourists to the east.
Aiyo can forget the bully - biggest devril hypocrites
Starts with a criticism of asia society for sewing division, the audacity of this guy! If more people like him speak out, maybe we can pass over the world to our kids without breaking it.
Really love the conversation, but am I the only who thinks the audio quality of the video is very poor? Sounds very difficult to hear the speakers, and almost sounds overcompressed, clicky and full of noise.
More Chinese scholars should be invited to explain their case. EV il Anglos are dominating the discourse and are distorting the truth
Here we really have TGIM & THIT- can you beat that!
George Yeo is one smart mamma jamma
Yao BLINDLY forgets that there ha😂ve been several Democratic movements in China mainland(militarily crushed) & that all ‘western’ democracies were at one point dictatorships of kings.
WHEN..? TIANAMEN ? In 1989 the Chinese don't even have a clear understanding democracy ...TIANAMEN was when Opening up their economy...there were corruptions..and very high inflation...further more..there was faction infighting......Thank to Deng China did not go the way of the former USSR...even the student protectors...of TIANAMEN understand today...where Deng have to do what he did....Although they came down hard of the protest...they also listen...and there were many positive change after TIANAMEN...most importantly...by 1991 Deng open the door of China...told chinese..to travel and learn..Study...even earn money...Then come home to build China...Many chinese did !
The Ccp..Kmt (Taiwan ).currently there is 8 other minor party were born from Dr Sun Y S revolution.....When DR Sun became president he already realised Democracy cannot work in China...his prodigy Chiang KS if the KmT is a brutal Dictator....
36:49 ".....cold war....US ,Japan....." She avoided including Korea, when she is pretty clear most will lump Korea into this us jippun camp
We must Leaning if, 1400 (LC)how many +🏇kilometer Distand.🤔you must thing before bring out.
South East Asia, and the world would be in greater peace without US
A truly wise men.

*Parenthetical expression.
Like or not, there were many silent and important, uncomfortable things spoken out loud which would be beneficial for US foreign policy but doubtful if there are any serious listeners coz of this crazy election every 4 yrs.😢
Time will tell if GY’s view of US and China is correct , no need to praise or criticise him; the situation is far more complex and unpredictable.
Merlion mighty 🙏🙂 Peter 60 saya
Asia Society security personnel almost choked a man to death because he was trying to voice his opinion about CH & US.
Why is the audio recording so bad?? Is this 1984 or 2024??
why George Yeo needed so much money unlike other Singapore former ministers , they don't need to give speeches everywhere
😢😢 57:54 57:58
Interviewer is very Taiwan supporter in facial expressions unintentionally.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅
What is the book title?
上帝问 为何万物会都会动只有一种东西不会动知道是什么吗
Minus the alleged Chinese government support (i believe most governments support their industries thru subsidies &/or tax holidays like the recent ?USD52B support to the microchip industry in the US?), how can Chinese merchants sell their products or services at a much cheaper rate compared to others?
PRODUCTION SCALE...CHEAPER LABOUR...CHEAPER ENERGY COST....CHEAPER OPERATING COST....ETC..

Mr. Yeo clearly has a sentimental fantasy of ideal China.
George is correct as long as China stays rational. . China is rational now but pushed to the limit, even saints can react.
You mean a nightmare for the west. Better be that way.

Dr. Kyung-wha Kang is really sharp on her feet! She quickly pointed out the curious contradictions of GY's assertion of CCP's collective leadership being a determinant of corruption. GY is a Taoist Roman Catholic. Is that possible? He is a Singaporean agent of influence for China. lol. His characterization of the Philippines' defence of her sovereignty as childish while at the same time asserting China's rightful use of arms against Taiwan & the Philippines is appalling.
You are just anti china
When a big power...vs smaller countries...there is no such thing as fair or equal...that is why it is childish...in the case of Philippines...you hv to consider..Marcos has cases outstanding in America..regarding his father assets..over USD 350million...He was a wanted fugitive in USA ..because of the cases...They invited him to America as president...when he return he completely overturn plans with China...😢😂
和平!
Dr Kang lie shamelessly.
CCP paid
George has a very limited feel on the south china sea issue . He's a little dismissive of the idea of some members of ASEAN in their claim in the region as ' we don't need another trouble...'.
His notion of ' the Americans egging the clueless (he's suggesting it) Filipinos...' is way out of line and entirely false.
George Yeo always talk well of China and blames all other countries for problems in relationship with China. Can forget what he says. There is always this bias.
You not listening carefully. Get some cotton bud to dig your ears
Maybe the bias is with you....when people are invited to speak...not everyone agree,.but...he sure make alot of sense..ib his observations...😊
@@ganboonmeng5370 You little pink? Wu Mao?
Singaporeans did not vote for George in 2011 Election. He lost. .....Bye Bye.....
I was at the opposition rally during the time of the election of 2011. The Workers Party liked GY. The were signs made calling GY for President. The WP said it was important to get more opposition into parliament. They knew they would win in GY’s constituency. The ruling party knew this. They could have removed him from this consituency but did not. He was Foreign Minister, very well respected in many countries. I believe there was also an agenda against him in the ruling party to sacrifice him.
As far as I can gather, George does not reside in China, nor his children.
In fact, his children are probably residing in the US.
That is enough said about which country is better.
❤❤❤
Why does he not make speeches or speak naturally in mandarin when learnt chinese in sg school? What is the success of Bilingualism of sg? Does he understand china when he is perceivably not comfortable speaking in mandarin in public? Could he misunderstand the China? And is he Anti-USA? Does he learn china from a english perspective?🤭🫣🤭 Or christian perspective?
Chinese is second language in S’pore schools. During GY’s time in school, he did not attend a Chinese language school. He has a double first class honours from Cambridge University.
@@jennifertan8085 Are you an apologist for GY? Most of us did not take Chinese as first language in SG. Yet , many like me can speak fluent English and mandarin. Are you saying GY did not take Chinese as Second Language in SG education system? I doubt so. You can clarify. Bilingualism comprises having Chinese as Second language. An ex policy maker need to walk the talk.
He broke record as the first full minister to ever lose his seat. This record is for eternity of SG history. In the age of A.I, who cares about first class honours? It's nothing to do with practical capabilities of a human. Education is regurgitation of someone's created knowledge. It's not creating knowledge. SG is a follower of technologies invented by other countries for most if not all the tech
Your idea of being a Peace maker as a responsibility of a great nation as contrast with trouble and war promoters is a core argument
Reunification is the rights of Korean people. Well said Mr. Yeo
So is the reunification of Taiwan with Mainland China.
The one that is worth listening to in the forum organised by the Asia Society in the US is George Yeo.
Agreed, him and Mr. Kishore Mahbubani.

Yes, it's simply because they represented the very truth about the majority of the Asian thinking about their own region.
Indeed, for he is open minded and knowledgeable. His tenure in both the politics and private sector had offered him numerous personal experiences to share with his audience.
why George Yeo needed so much money unlike other Singapore former ministers , they don't need to give speeches everywhere
The only issue between China and the US is that China does not bend the knee to the US.
Go fs hbilly
Since when the imperial capital never tense? Such a true statement since ancient China.
USA : Please help us to end the Ukraine War so that we can concentrate War in the island of Taiwan with you.
China : You're Nuts
Outstanding as always Mr George Yeo 👏👏👏👏
Out standing 😂
Very deep thoughts in George Yeo's speech.
This type of person should invited very knowledgeable person.I'm so thankful
The moderator is so biased.
Excellent interview. One minor point though: at the end of the interview the host expressed that George Yeoh has 20 decades of experiences. Being a Singaporean we know that George Yeoh is definitely not over 200 years old 😊
