    In an after thought, it’s not surprising for many people to think that this Bilahari guy is some well paid U.S. agent in an anti China crusade or acting on behalf of U.S. interests in the ASEAN region by suggesting for more U.S. influence & involvement with these ASEAN countries over that of China which is establishing more economic & cooperative relationships with ASEAN members , in direct contrast to the U.S. position which link its relations with military alliances , aiming mainly at one nation , China.! Many of the ASEAN countries , with exception of the PH, have realized that the U.S. relations are rather counterproductive to their national interests & had indirectly , refrained from any military involvement with the U.S. in its drive to contain China , by using ASEAN as the cannon fodders, should regional conflicts escalate with U.S. design. As the Indonesian Pres. Prabowo once reiterated on his U.S. policy that the “ U.S. enemies are theirs alone , Not ours “! I believe that the Malaysian PM , Anwar did take a similar position on his U.S. policy. These ASEAN leaders have taken their pragmatic approach on their country’s relations with China which have become more productive on national & regional terms than with the U.S. policy of war & destruction as evidenced in its American exceptionalism.! Surely, SG won’t want to be on the outside looking in , among the ASEAN group.!

      On the subject matter of deaths figures ....It is always good to appreciate some background History of the PRChina after its founding on Oct 1, 1949,
      Shortly, after the founding of PRChina, on Oct 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong embarked on various CCP Policies to reshape the Mainland of China :- 1) Mao’s Land Reform Movement (1949-1953). Continuous bloody episodes repeatedly seizing lands, of Chinese people and destruction of wealth and assets by the CCP Regime, millions of people were affected, and many lost their lives due to political persecution, executions, and other forms of violence associated with the movement. Estimated death tolls several hundreds of thousands to several millions .. difficult to ascertain as many official records were destroyed subsequently.
      (2). Mao’s commitments of some 3 millions PLA Troops deployed into the Korean War (1950-1953) to fight alongside North Korean Troops against the South Korean Forces and the United Nations Forces led by the U.S. Army. It had been estimated the dead tolls of PLA Troops during the 3-years of the Korean War from some 150,000 to over 400,000. Mao’s eldest son, Mao Anying was also killed during the Korean War on Nov. 25, 1950.
      (3). The GREAT LEAP FORWARD (1958 to 1962) estimated some 15,000,000 to as high as 45,000,000 Chinese Citizens perished through diseases, deprivations and starvations. The details extremely gruesome and thus very difficult for me to elaborate further or write more. Please do your own reading/research.
      (4). The Cultural Revolution (1966 to 1976) After the massive failures of the Great Leap Forward, Chairman Mao’s launched his Cultural Revolution to purge his opponents / dissenters on the excuses to pursue socio-political movement aimed at purification and removal of remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society while promoting Maoist ideology and revolutionary fervor. It sought to revitalize the revolutionary spirit and enforce ideological purity within the Communist Party and across all society of PRChina, from small villages to major cities. Traditional Chinese Cultural artefacts/relics were destroyed, burnt, defaced and broken, temples were sacked, libraries and old historical books burnt and Chinese Intellectuals, incl, those can speak foreign languages were persecuted .. and purged (imprisoned or executed).
      Traditional Chinese Cultural practices & Teachings of past Chinese Scholars, Confucius etc. were banned and forbidden as antithetical to the revolutionary ideals of Maoism. Tens of Millions Chinese Citizens lives were uprooted and millions perished during the 10-years of purging throughout from 1966 to 1976 … only ended when Chairman Mao died / passed away on Sept. 9, 1976.
      It has had been estimated that during WWII, total deaths among military personnel, civilians, during direct conflicts, injuries, deprivation. famine, diseases. about 70 million to 85 millions (all countries of the World).)
      You will also be interested total range of CHINESE PEOPLE deaths during Mao's policies implemented (1949-1976) due to starvation/famine, political persecution, execution, deprivations, diseases, through the Land Reform Movement (1949-1953), Korean War (1950-1953), Great Leap Forward (1958-1962), Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the estimated Chinese People deaths between 30 million to 70 million (only Chinese People).

    The US is continuing with its strategy to keep Asia poor and divided. This policy was articulated in the top-secret U.S. Foreign Policy written 76 years ago.
    February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy:
    Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time.
    Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975. The 1989 attempt in China failed. The 2019-2020 attempt in Hong Kong also failed.
    Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.
    The 'Arsenal of Democracy' produces 40 percent of the world's weapons. It is a very profitable business model in which other countries buy these weapons to fight each other. The key is maximizing profits without shedding US blood by inducing conflicts between and within countries outside the USA. One client is eager to spend AUD 368 billion to buy a few high-quality used nuclear-powered submarines. This business model's critical components are NATO, QUAD, ANZUS, Five Eyes, AUKUS, and MCC (Mutual Cross-Service Agreement).
    The US makes the rules, and the US and their friends do not have to follow them. Since WWII, the United States has started 201 wars, overthrew 36 foreign leaders, killed or attempted to kill 50, dropped bombs in 30 countries, and interfered in 86 foreign elections. To make the world safe for democracy, the US has caused the deaths of tens of millions of people in its conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. The CIA was involved in covert operations that resulted in mass killings of communists in over 22 countries, 500,000 to 2,000,000 Indonesian civilians disappeared in 1965-1966.

Also, at the scale of China, nothing a politician achieve can be an "unqualified" success, cuz there's always a tradeoff. The fact that he doesn't even recognize this basic point means he doesn't know the first things about running a huge country like China.

    There's LKY, Kishore, George Yeo. And then there's this guy. Lol.
    10 mins in and hes said absolutely nothing except he doesn't believe in Asian century. Sure. India is the one who's not going to join in the CHINESE century. Everything else he says is a waste of time.
    He keeps talking about what he believes in or not and China's "serious structural problems" and "demographic problems". If means absolutely nothing.
    Just another biased us/west apologist and China basher. Not objective at all. Nothing he said is insightful. XJP is mediocre and only good amassing power?
    BRI, his anti corruption drive, cracking down on unsustainable growth like Jack ma and Alibaba etc. if XJP is mediocre then every other leader is a joke. Just the things above already puts him and China heads and shoulders above every other leader and country.
    He says that eradication of poverty has nothing to do with XJP? You can say the same about any leader. He downplays everything that happened under XJP watch, but at the same time himself did not mention any reason for why he's mediocre. He made the claim, so onus is on him to back up or prove his claim.. why is Xi mediocre? He never says. Complete joke. He speaks in generalities only because he has nothing else.
    Why is belt and road bad? China was attacked and trade war waged under XJP watch. China overtook USA in everything under Xi watch. From GDP to every technology. He handled COVID better than any other country and leader. He raised China's technology and military power from nothing to world leader and peer of USA, if not above usa. He reigned in all the structural excesses and corruption that came about due to Dengs reforms. Deng and previous leaders never had to deal with USA attacking China with full court press and not just defended, but has lead China to greater heights than ever.
    Then we also have China's space program.. he took China to the greatest heights its ever been.
    He expanded BRICS and now everyone wants to join. Belt and road is still growing and doing great. He claims China is not talking about it so it's a failure? Nonsense. It's only a decade old, same as BRICS. But even in just that short time, it has changed the world and is reshaping global balance of power.
    USA and West have declined massively in the last 10-15 years while China has booned massively under XJP. Where is the mediocrity? J don't see it. I see it for USA and western leaders. Mediocrity is the best they can get if we are being generous and diplomatic. Otherwise if we are being frank, then they have been utter disasters. USA has forced its vassals to cripple and destroy their own economies and futures. Like Japan, SK, Taiwan, Netherlands with the chip ban. Like Germany, UK etc with Ukraine war. Japan with plaza accord. They are all currently in recession and have no future to hope for.
    USA and west supporting Israel and genocide in Gaza only gave up all credibility and China has been the biggest beneficiary of all these issues. That has all been under XJP watch. He will probably try to downplay it and say it was due to Deng or whatever which is just ridiculous nonsense. Saudi Arabia and Iran have joined brics after china brokered rapprochement between the two enemies. Malaysia joining brics. Usa forced Philippines to be cannon fodder and antagonize China over SCS but China called usas bluff, and now USA is nowhere to be seen when pH needs them most. USA and pH is all talk.
    China has biggest navy in the world, and now has like 280x the shipbuilding capacity USA does. China not only survived usas chip ban and full court press to kill China's high tech development, but is thriving. China is more united and stronger than ever. USA could not even kill Huawei, let alone china.
    China came from "nowhere" and in the last 3-4 years has taken over the global electric car industry, making USA have to do 100% tariffs and hand china the crown for free trade. China has full domestic capability to mass produce 5th gen engines and jets. China has caught up in all crucial core technologies and usa has no cards to play, nothing left to ban or sanction. Their whole decoupling and de risking strategy has failed due to XJP leadership.
    Even with covid, USA and wests full court press and trade wars and tech bans, China under XJP at its worst has still managed to keep 5%+ GDP growth and is doing better than ever. All serious "structural issues" like infrastructure over capacity and associated bubbles has been popped by XJP and the government intentionally. They didn't bail out ever grande and they banned the Alibaba IPO intentionally. this showed great foresight and courage to stop full on growth in return for more stable quality growth.
    All this and more happened under XJPs watch. All massive changes and growth. He turned China from a growing great power into an undisputed superpower and not just a peer competitor but into a superpower that everyone knows will overtake USA in EVERYTHING if it hasn't already.
    The Asian century? Nah, because India is part of Asia and because of its mediocre leadership and corrupt and inept system will not follow China's rise.. It's the Chinese century. And anyone who is friendly with China will undoubtedly rise with them. Just see Russia. Growing at 3-4%, fastest in the West. Mainly due to China. While EU and anti China forces are all suffering. China by itself is responsible for like 1/3rd of all global growth, and then rest is mainly from countries who are China's biggest trade partners. See Vietnam and SEA. Growing massively due to china. Compare with pH or Japan or SK or Taiwan. They are being sacrificed for us interests, while those who work with china are growing.
    Even if he doesn't want to give XJP the credit, China's rise and accomplishments cannot be denied. So it doesn't matter if he wants to give XJP credit or not.
    This guy is a joke and has no idea what he's talking about and downplaying all of Chinas achievements under XJP.

They even threatened to shoot down Nancy Pelosi's plane on her way to visit Taiwan as a gesture of support, did anything really happen on her visit?? Of course nothing happened as expected. This is such a clickbait video title. This guy knows nothing about the issue of Taiwan except what he can parrot off a casual google search and he clearly doesn't have a good understanding of political science or economics.
    People who talk about the Chinese debt situation just don't understand the structure or economic role of debt at all. Intra governmental debts have no impact on the real economy. Writing such debts down arbitrarily has virtually no impact on incentives or behaviors for anyone, the private sector, the public sector, the domestic sector or the export sector. The only debt that matter are those between agents in the private sector and those between the public and private sector. Writing those debts down, inflating them away or simply defaulting on them has massive impacts to incentives and behaviors of all sectors. That why the debt issue in the US is a real thing and the debt issues in China is a bogus thing used to bamboozle the ignorant.
    For Gaza it doesn't matter if there is a solution or not. The issue is how things will progress with no solution. The Israelis are slowly losing demographically, politically and economically. The conditions for a successful uprising are slowly building and the conditions for successful repression is eroding, plain and simple.
    Flat out lying about Iran. Iran used some of its crappiest weapons against Israel. Almost all of Iran's ballistic missiles got through and the US deployed considerable resources to help Israel shoot down the cheap slow flying drones that were intercepted.
    Taiwan reunification is inevitable. What matters is Chinese public and elite opinion not Taiwanese opinions. The balance of power is becoming so tilted to the Chinese side that one way or another Taiwan will be swallowed in another 5-10 years.
    China doesn't have a Leninist political system. It has a Confucian political system. This is the only stable political system for China and moving off it can only result in civil war. Of course the US would love that and so it is always trying to push in futility for China to move to a different system that will destroy it.
    The problem for the US in the competition with China is that, to defeat China the US has to move China off its current system that is working to one that doesn't work. Where as for the Chinese the problem is much simpler, they just have to keep the US on its current system that doesn't work.

The Pentagon knows this is all blowing smoke because the conditions on the ground are obvious. There have been over 20 serious wargames on the matter of defending Taiwan at the Pentagon in recent years every one of them leads to a disastrous loss for the US. The Pentagon knowns the preparedness of the Taiwanese military is ridiculous garbage, with grossly inadequate supplies, insufficient personnel and dilapidated equipment. They also know that the commitment to resist occupation is paper thin. The society is full of 5th column for China. Just like the overseas Chinese in the US are full of 5th column for China. If they go to war they know they have to intern camp all overseas Chinese because they can't identify the numerous China sympathizers. In the case of Taiwan the 5th column there is so large there, there is no way they don't just capture the society. Taiwanese politicians are such ideologically bankrupt narcissists that they themselves will jump ship. They are no different than those people that licked the boots of the Nazi's or Imperial Japan when they took over.

    This ever so more as his perspective is decidedly a foreign policy one, that means he cares about the people he sits on the table with without a lot of second guessing on their legitimacy representing the populations they rule over. As a European I do reject this view, but it nevertheless gives refreshing insides to see things from another perspective. Still his approach does not come without its own inconsistencies. "It's not my problem" does not mean it is considered a domestic problem and if extended it might easily mean "I don't care at all if it is a domestic problem, what I care about, is if it's my problem."

    Taiwan will become part of China unless America sticks its nose in, which it is already doing. The idea is to make Taiwan a base for American missiles like they are doing in Ukraine. Taiwanese are poorly paid whereas the Chinese middle class classes are growing and becoming well off. The Taiwanese people see this and will want to be part of it. America knows this so want to get themselves established in Taiwan before this happens. The push to NATOise the area is now on, but it seems they have already forgotten their humiliating defeat at the hands of the Taliban and Vietcong, both poorly armed peasant armies. They will suffer an even greater defeat at the hands of China and Russia. The Americans have come to believe they are the greatest military in the world through being brainwashed by Hollywood pictures of gum chewing macho actors beating up the enemy. It is false.

    We as Singaporeans may laugh and joke and shake our heads at how a ludicrous character like Bilahari Kausikan can even be employed as some sort of so called diplomat. But the fact of the matter is that his Sinophobic and pro West ideas can be quite dangerous for Singapore interests. He may turn Singapore into a kind of U.S. running dog like Ukraine or Philippines to attack U.S. enemies. That would be suicidal for Singapore. China already sent us a warning in 2016 by F**king us in HK when Singapore acted as U.S. proxy in South China Sea disputes. I think there are too many people like Bilahari Kausikan in Singapore government. This is very dangerous.

    Interesting how many of the comments are equally vitriolic and using almost the same tone, same language, almost the same words. One might say that’s because that’s because the views are correct but it’s far too much of a coincidence.
    The question so many commenters raise “How can Singapore put such a person to high office?” or “How can can such a person rise to important office in Singapore?” is a valid one. Singapore doesn’t make too many mistakes of such magnitude or if it does, it doesn’t go unrectified for this long. Neither does the government let such “clowns” or “buffoons” (as the posts term Bilahari) go off to represent them, retired or not.
    Also, Bilahari is well-respected in Singapore so the “Singaporeans” in the comments section seem to be disproportionate in their disparaging of the man.

    The hard reality is Taiwan would either engage in a Peaceful reunifcation with China, mostly on Taiwan's terms, or China invokes a "liberation" of Taiwan with motherland, given China "position of strength" in due course. However, China will have to wait for the "easterly wind", which could happen based on one or more of these scenarios:
    a) Taiwan declared its independence from China, with the tacit support of the USA;
    b) A drastic change in the political leadership in China where Unification with Taiwan at all costs in order to enhance the new leaderships in China;
    c) The USA itself is in complete internal anarchy / chaos, verging on edge of a 2nd civil war scenario;
    d) The advent of WW3, with China taking on the side of the US's main enemy, possibly Russia;
    e) China has technically reach the status of a bona fide global super-power status, with at least 6 CVNs battle-carrier fleets, 3000 nuclear warheads, an economy that is almost twice that of the USA in PPP terms, and a nuetralized and weakened US allies in Asia (Japan, Australia, India and South Korea).

    They use all the tools of the media to confuse and convince, they keep their puppets happy and that is easy for them, and these puppets will do their bidding with just one phone call, they make a mockery of morality and integrity, they set the standards for you to follow, it’s one big game and everyone else doesn’t count, the rest fight and die and they shall wine and dine and get their women.
    It’s a satanic world we are living in, they are enjoying their stimulating games.
    Meantime thousands of conferences, meetings, articles, books, commentaries, forums, demonstrations, interviews, and they wine and dine in the poshest places. Behind the scenes the final decisions were made. To do this and that, drag this fella down, get rid of this fella, and they sit somewhere and enjoy the show.
    And inconsequential speakers or do-gooders aplenty bursting their lungs, yelling or squeaking away here and there, addressing small or big groups, expressing their views on issues, just hot air as that doesn’t count to the mafia as their minds are already set.
    They don’t care how many will suffer and die. Their satanic minds are ceaselessly planning to ensure their control and domination over anything and everything. Their interests come first. The small guys merely suck in and prostitute themselves to these characters.
