Dr. Kishore Mahbubani and Professor Jeffrey Sachs are my heroes. Their books and speeches have been reinforcing my beliefs for many years.
The Taiwan issue is the last piece of colonialism and will be resolved in due course.
It is time that Western imperialism and colonialism in the name of capitalism finally come to an end. That’s why politicians in the West are hysterical and delusional and desperate to stop the rise of China. The so called “coming collapse of China”is, in reality, the coming collapse of imperialism and colonialism, or the collapse of global hegemony.
For the last 500 hundred years before the beginning of the collapse of colonialism in the 1950s, Europe had been colonizing the rest of the world, mainly for its endless resources and cheap labor to feed its own economic growth. The West had been fighting wars among themselves for colonies and control of raw materials and energy. Ever since the end of the WW2, independence movements across the globe had first set free countries in Asia, followed by Latín America, the Middle East and lastly Africa. The West is, now, no longer able to get free resources or labor or land, to support its dominance over developing countries, or the global South in general.
Under these circumstances, Europe, or the West including Japan, is losing its own economic independence; they are relying heavily or existentially on the support of the U.S. In the meantime, on the other hand, the global South with the cooperation among the BRICS COUNTRIES like China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and so on, are focusing on their own economic growth and social development. The new world order is emerging with multipolarity and international democracy for shared prosperity. The West is feeling the heat and threat of its hegemonic collapse. That’s why they are following the marching order of the U.S., in its proxy war in Ukraine against Russia. The European countries have become totally dependent on the U.S. for its resources and strength. Without their old colonies, they submit themselves now completely to the hegemony of the U.S.
However, with the united front between China and Russia, the global south is awakening to a new world order. They see their hope and prosperity in China’s BRI as well as the strategies of the BRICKS. That’s why the West can not defeat Russia in Ukraine because it doesn’t have the unlimited resources it used to enjoy with their colonies gone forever.
The bottom line is how can the West or NATO expect to beat the united front between Russia and China in the long run without getting into a nuclear Armhcsageddon?!
It is a self-indulgent delusion that the West under the coercion of the United States would be able somehow to stop or contain the rise of China with so-called small yard with high fences. It is a self defeating hypothesis. The U.S. and China should be partners and friends instead of enemies or competitors, for the benefits of the humanity and for a better world for all.

When the American left Subic Bay Naval Base and Clarke Air Base, there was a power vacuum. China took advantage of it and claimed much of the South China Sea and built military bases on the islands. Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore wisely suggested there is a need for a balance of power with the presence of US forces. Unfortunately US made the wrong decision. Now it becomes a problem for them because they want to meddle. Their bad experience in Vietnam must have scared them. Now they want to be friend with another communist country - Vietnam.

What many in Asia can't understand, especially in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Philippines is that - the Rivalry between US and China is not necessarily between US and China alone, or between Democracy and Authoritarianism, it is a much more bigger rivalry than that. It is a rivalry between the collective west led by USA against a raising but disarray Asia led by China. It's a rivalry between western supremacy, cultural and economic dominance against a rising Asia who are trying to exert its cultural and economic legitimacy in a world that has been dominated and manipulated by the western imperialist for centuries now. In other words, it's a clash between the imperialist West (15% of the world) against the rest of the world, not only Asia (85% of the world).
Unfortunately, most people in Taiwan, S.Korea, Japan and Philippines believes otherwise. They think China is all evil and USA is the God who is on a mission to save the world from evil like what Jesus did in 1st century.. I don't know who is going to tell them that they are living in a delusional world..!! America is using them as launchpad to deter Asia from raising, not only China. They are enabling the west to control Asia and belittled Asia, not realizing they themselves are Asian too. We need to wake up these puppets in Asia to come back to sense and understand the real motives of the west in Asia.

We do not think that the USA is god but we know that China is evil and it does not give any leadership to Asia because of its imperialistic policy. The USA is also imperialist. Thus it is not a choice between good and evil but between two devils. The only angel is now Russia. Unfortunately the West is anti-Russian as well.

Kishore was actually incorrect when he commented on the 9-dash line. When the Republic of China government filed the original 11-dash line with the United Nations in 1946, there was not a single objection from any country. Consequently, when the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, they simply adopted the 11-dash line as it was China's internationally recognized boundary and it was undisputed. The disputes came decades afterwards when newly independent countries began making overlapping claims with China's 11-dash line. As such, China is not responsible for the conflicting claims and disputes over the 9-dash line. ASEAN, which Kishore promotes so heavily, needs to reflect on the actual history of these disputes, rather than simply placing the blame on China.

Kishore has wisely pointed out that China should try to resolve the problem it has created in the South China Sea. It should discuss with the claimant Southeast Asian nations how to share or use the sea and resources rather than claim the sea, atolls and islands belong to them. China is dragging its feet over the Code of Conduct for the South China Sea. Indonesia should play a more active role to resolve the problem for ASEAN without antagonising China.

Today, PRC Beijing claims a 9-dash line, and ROC Taiwan claims an 11-dash line. Because ROC claimed the South China Sea Islands in 1945, The US gave warships to the ROC navy, so Chinese could control Taiping Island, Thitu Island, Triton Island, and Woody Island in 1946, then The Kuomintang government (KMT) in Nanjing drew an 11-dash line in 1947 with the acquiescence of the West and the Soviet Union, At that time, all Southeast Asian countries were Western colonies, and no one objected, so the Chinese believe this is the order of World War II.
Why did the West let ROC take over and control the South China Sea islands after the Japanese troops withdrew? Because ROC was the only Asian country that persisted in resisting Japan to the end, all Southeast Asian countries and colonial armies surrendered in 1942, KMT/CCP eliminated more fascists by paying huge casualties, so South China Sea was given to the Chinese as spoils of war by the international community.
PRC government inherited ROC government's all claim after Chinese Civil War 1949,

      @@westwoodly Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty
      Article 2
It is recognized under Treaty of Peace with Japan signed at the city of San Francisco, Japan has renounced all right, title and claim to Taiwan and Penghu as well as Spratly Islands and Paracel Islands.
Therefore, from a Chinese perspective, this is the order of World War II that Beijing and Taiwan believe is the reward given by the United States and the Soviet Union to the Chinese for their contribution to the war.
Taiwan is too weak today and very pro-American, so Taiwan is no longer active in advocating for the 11-dash line claim in ROC constitution.
China is too strong today, so the United States can use this controversy to divide the relationship between China and Southeast Asia. Of course China knows this, so China's response is to adopt a relaxed attitude towards pro-China countries and a tough approach towards pro-American countries.
For example, Mao Zedong gave Bach Long Vi island to Ho Chi Minh in 1957, Therefore, the 11-dash line of the PRC has since become a 9-dash line. Mao Zedong must have never imagined that the Viet Cong would claim the Paracel Islands after reunification, and would even become pro-American today.
Xi Jinping granted Duterte fishing rights and stopped the militarization of Scarborough Shoal.
Xi Jinping gave Jokowi the high-speed railway, also basically giving up the EEZ claim in Natuna.
Xi Jinping no longer harasses the islands occupied by Malaysia and has greatly reduced pressure on Vietnam.
China now only targets pro-American Marcos.
For Southeast Asian countries, we must remember the role of the CCP in the previous three Indochina wars. The CCP retaliated against the pro-French state of Vietnam, the pro-American South Vietnam, and the pro-Soviet Viet Cong. If today’s Viet Cong becomes pro-American again, then Vietnam will become another South Vietnam, because it is impossible to rely on other superpowers to contain, intimidate and pressure the CCP.
As long as you are closer to China, China will be more generous to its friends. This is like the United States to Canada. In fact, the United States and Canada also have territorial disputes, but will the United States be generous to Cuba?

A wise man from Singapore. Kishore is always so clear and profound in this thought. ASEAN will remain a beacon of peace (not withstanding the civil war in member state Myanmar) as long as there is consensus building and neutrality.
Perhaps Kishore could ponder on what if Indonesia - the largest country with the largest economy and largest population - becomes more powerful? Will it become more assertive like China? Remember who gave the title of "little red dot" to Singapore? When forest fires and burning from Indonesia polluted the whole region with haze, the "little red dot" was chided for being "childish" and "tizzy". Will Indonesia do a China and claim the Sulu Sea or Straits of Malacca? Or take more control of their airspace? Indonesia still has territorial disputes with member countries. ASEAN members need the assurances when Indonesia becomes more wealthy and powerful.

Kishore Mahbubani advocates for Southeast Asia and ASEAN to reject Western pessimism and instead focus on fostering optimism and strategic competence to secure a peaceful and prosperous future. He criticizes the West's geopolitical incompetence, citing conflicts like those in Ukraine and Gaza as examples of the failure to adapt to a changing multipolar world.
He argues that the rising tensions between the US and China, particularly the attempt to hinder China's growth, are unwise and counterproductive. He calls for constructive engagement between these powers to maintain global stability. Additionally, he emphasizes the need to reform and strengthen multilateral institutions, such as the UN Security Council, to make them more inclusive and reflective of current global realities.
He also highlights ASEAN's role in maintaining regional peace, urging its members, particularly Indonesia, to take on more assertive leadership roles and promote the ASEAN model of cooperation to other regions.

South East Asian countries were also tributary countries to China. No organization like ASEAN in NE Asia is not because of China being too big. It is because of 20th century history. Japan's violent and cruel invasion of Korea/China; Japan becoming vassal of US after defeat in WWII (no sovereignty - so many US military bases all over Japan); US interference in the Koreas and Taiwan - too much disharmony created amongst these nations.
