What they make they are always on the top of their game in terms of technology and reliability. If they concentrate on making weapons they will make the best weapons out there. What happens is that Japan has banned arms exports so the industry does not benefit from the mass markets and it becomes to expensive to develop weapons only for domestic use.

Japan needs to become more of the military presence in the western pacific/eastern Asia region. They have the technological know-how to build some of best weapon systems if they wanted. Japanese fleet needs to return as a power. No more with semantics about “helicopter destroyers”. Build full blown aircraft carriers. Do what the Israelis do, buy some American military tech. Take it apart and use your own technology to improve on it. Japan did it for the Burke-class. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard for Japan to build an aircraft carrier comparable to the Queen Elizabeth-class.

Japan is actually a great trading partner, though they made Americans nervous in the 1980's. I've had a couple of jobs for Japanese companies living on the Pacific Coast. My brother has a Japanese flat screen TV that still works after about 15 years. I wish we would stop trading with China, and trade with countries like Japan and South Korea, as well as independent, sovereign nations like Taiwan.

They've been forced to buy second type weapons and old model vehicles from USA
They are working on a lot of cool stuff like a new Gen 6 aircraft together with the US but generally Japan’s military budget is really low compared to their GDP and people are quite opposed to spending money on the military in Japan.
Most if not all vehicles and weapons used by the JSDF are made by Japan. Nice try!

They are slowly building their own stuff, the Japanese multi-purpose destroyers, (basically a helicopter carrier.) One of them is being converted to be able to fly F-35’s off it, making it japans first aircraft carrier since ww2.

I appreciate the effort, and Japan is a key ally. But seeing that most of their equipment is over 30+ years old doesn't bring me huge confidence.
Who do you envision going to war with? If they have nuclear weapons it doesn't matter how old or new your equipment is.

The only likely scenario Japan would use said equipment is either in support of international counter-terror operations or in defense of it's own soil. And I don't really think it needs explanation as to who in Asia would even remotely pose any kind of threat to Japan which has strong US backing.
It still doesn't inspire confidence to see vietnam-era equipment shown off as if it's impressive when used in 2021. It didn't inspire my confidence in Russia's invasion of Ukraine and it doesn't inspire my confidence here. I'm more impressed at the attitude & motivation of the soldiers involved, rather than any hardware.
