Flir one thermal camera review

- The Flir One is pretty much the only consumer grade thermal camera worth having.
With Flir MSX technology, the Flir One combines a regular camera image with a thermal (heat) image. This combination produces easy to interpret images that can show the temperature differences across the whole image.
Once you snap a picture, all of the thermal data is saved into the image file itself which can later be analyzed to extract temperatures and make adjustments to the combined images to tweak for sharing.

This is an old video now but it is much more what I was looking for than most that I find. You show distance and scale. Not just across the room or under a faucet. Several generations of fair one later this video is probably still more useful than most on RUclips. Thank you
Finally, A review from a real user and not some dry salesman or home inspector. You actually showed real images and answered the questions I had. Thank you sir, this is the best review I've seen yet. Now I feel confident to buy one of these. Thanks!
Hi, I've never left a review before and have just discovered this channel as I've wanted a flir one for a couple of years now. This is a realIy great review and covers most things, but what I really wanted the flir for was wildlife spotting at night as I live by woodland at the bottom of my garden. Would it, say pick up mice, voles etc close up in the bracken or birds in the trees? I can usually see badgers but the foxes tend to hide! Would this do the job? Also another review has had prob with charging, anyone throw any light on that? Cheers 😊
Your video is the first one I have found that goes into the details of the image review on the computer, etc. Thanks for all the review.
Thanks! You just showed me that I blew it !! I have the Seek Compact and you are right, the second camera for detail is well worth the cost of the Flir. Thanks for the good video.
that heat above the windows at 13:00 could be from the steel lintels at the window headers wicking heat out, that is pretty awesome
I'm sorry if this has already been covered in the comments below however I was wondering what the maximum usable distance of this device is? As in if I were outside in the dead of night how far would the device accurately pick up the heat signature of either a person or an animal?
I think we all have wanted thermal since the 1980's predator movies. I am thinking about skipping buying Infra Red and skipping straight to the superior view .
now you can use this for all the reviews you do 😀 awesome
I want one but don't really need one. But your video demonstrating it's features has sold me on getting one. I'm going to have to wait 2 weeks til I my next payday though. Got it on my wish list on Amazon. I have a small IR temp gun but for the life of me can't find it.
I saw a plumber pulling out one of these to check for water leakage and pipe routing in the house. This is actually very useful but the price is still quite high for me as a hobbyist.
Good review. Did you test for seeing through or behind things? If your hand is under table, can Flir spot it at all? Really interested in how well, if at all, it can spot rodents, termites, water leaks, etc. without having to go into walls and ceilings?
+Scott Wolf The flir can't see "through" things, unless there's heat transfer. For example I can see the hot water pipes under my wooden and carpeted floor. I can see damp where there's a leak behind a wall. But you wouldn't be able to see a live rodent running around behind a wall.
Best FLIR review I’ve seen. Very helpful. Thanks very much.
This is amazing! I want one. I found it to be costly 250usd..:(
You should check the CAT S60 Smartphone powered by FLIR. Yes, CAT, the maker of Heavy equipment, is also making smartphone
Have you tried using it on a car at night for enhanced driver visibility ? I would be interested about that . To see how it performs on the road , against incoming traffic and how well it observes pedestrians and hazardous objects on the side of the road.
Really?? This is a worse idea than driving and texting
+Matthew Henderson big automakers like Mercedes, Audi, BMW have some sort of night vision on their cars , for detecting posible hazards on or near the road. It's a Device meant for detecting not for driving soully on that. I would gladly use a Device like that on my car on an about 8" Device If that would make a safer drive. I Can't see the problem here. And believe me , it's not the same as texting. It might be the same as looking în the rear view mirror.
Any display that improves a drivers awareness of the vehicle and its surrounding is good, but if it distracts with non-essential information or impairs the ability to control the vehicle, it contributes to conditions that could lead to an accident. An iPhone with a FLIRONE attached being held with one hand impairs the ability to control steering and the multitasking notifications can distract with non-essential information for driving. Even if you mount the iPhone/FLIRONE on the dash, I doubt it would be of any great benefit as the image resolution is a 640x480 optical edges superimposed on a 320x240 infrared image, and at night, the optical picks up next to nothing so all you have is just 320x240 infrared.
Yes, I would like an augmented night driving system, but I think this is best implemented with a dedicated IR camera and/or a forward looking radar feeding a heads up display system.
This was awesome. Looking to use it for human studies i.e. lack of blood flow before the skin visual presents. Thank you!
Hey thanks for this quite detailed review! Could you perhaps describe an update on your more recent experience, given that you made / uploaded this vid in January? Such as, did you find any other uses / insights, did the software change to the better / worse, ...? Thanks!
To be honest, nothing has changed much since I got it. I've still found it to be a very useful tool and carry it with the rest of my equipment. I did manage to break the Apple chip inside so it now prompts as a unsupported accessory, but that was my thought because I was screwing around with modified cables to try charge the phone and use the Flir One at the same time. It still works, I just get a warning each time I connect it.
Thanks for getting back to me! At least it still works, even with the annoyance of the warning / error message at the start when using it.
Did you manage to work it so you could charge your phone and use the Flir at the same time?
themax2go I didn't manage it :( I've seen in some forums people have managed to do it on the Android version though. I felt like I was getting close but didn't want to keep pushing until the Flir One was completely dead.
Sorry to hear and yeah, probably a good call! Though from a "non-electronics expert" POV, I would say all it'd require is a/are diode(s) (placed directionally accordingly) between the USB output of the Flir to a USB cable, which connects the phone and the power source. At least that's how I'd do on Android, but should similarly work for the iPhone.
Another way that might (at least theoretically) work, is to open up the iPhone to gain access to the battery, then connecting cables from a Li-Io (or one that's compatible with the phone's battery) charger to the battery-pack; though that might not be so straight-forward.
Either way, I'd definitely suggest then to use another power source (with its own cable) to the charging port of the Flir.
Can you see ghost with this?
Many believe you could.
+Amristar Yes but only warm or cold ghosts. Seeing room in the same room temperature is more difficult.
+Amristar you could if they existed , but sadly there are no ghost's :)

Thanks for this video, I'm get interested on your USB LOAD Discharger. Can you please make a separate review on this, if it's safe for Powerbank and adapter for a long period of time, let say discharge a whole capacity of powerbank. and don't toast it's electronic components inside. Thanks!
+Ariel Monton I'm uploading a video about the USB dummy load right now :) It should be live in 2-3 hours! Then I have another video going up maybe tomorrow where I use it to discharge a powerbank. It's currently discharging an ASUS Zenpower bank which is sold as 10050 mAh. The dummy load has consumed about 1200 mAh so far and no issues, although I'm using it at the 1 Amp setting and I have a fan pointed at it. The resistor is currently stable at around 115C.
Buat lihat makluk hidup warna thermalnya msh minim/ tidak jelas antara orang dengan dinding & kendaraan hampir sama.👎👎
Regarding the Flir One's casing, is it coated like one of those rubbery paint jobs that becomes sticky over time?
+SEELE01 Hmm good question, I know the type you mean. It's similar but it feels like real rubber instead of one of those coated ones that goes sticky. So I think it should be okay :)
Hi Gadget Addict, I have two questions: is the focal distance enough for astronomical work? ie, would it show Nibiru, near to the sun but too dim to see, but giving out some heat? The bee cluster in the hive during winter needs to be 30 - 32 C but opening the hive lets out heat - if you get a chance (even though it's summer now) can you try it on a bee-hive and see if the inner heat shows through the wood?I'd appreciate a reply. Best of luck with your hobbies.
Hai...only iphone can used this termal camera ser??
I dont have any palette in my TOOL program. Just the pics in the library.
A comment and a question: First the comment, Anymore most cameras allow you to take stills from video. Perhaps, if that was done with the Flir One videos, you might then get to look at the data for that one still. Now the question; Can you use the temperature target while taking a photo?
I hear Flir Supoort is atrocious
I emailed them from their website with some questions, and they havnt responded.
So I believe the comments regarding ther support.
The Battery life I hear isn’t great, and if you let it go flat, it won’t start up.
And they are very very expensive..
How have you fount it, as it looks like you i’ve had your since 2016?
Subscribed
After around a year, the battery life turned terrible. Maybe less than 10 minutes of use before it's dead.
But you can plug it into a powerbank at the same time as using it.
It's easy to open the unit, so I could probably just replace the battery.
But since I don't use it every day, I'm content with just connecting it to a powerbank.
Otherwise, I have no complaints. Image and thermal quality appears to be as good as day one.
@@GadgetAddict Thankyou, I appreciate your prompt response.
Do you think I should go for the latest model?
Or the Hand held, or could you recommend a different manufacturer?
I have see the all in ones in Amazon, what look like a console?
I've not seen any competitor that has a better product. At least not on that kind of price range. So personally I'd stick with FLIR.
A dedicated handheld unit can look more professional, but otherwise I can't see any benefit, unless you're going for a much higher model with better sensor.
The units that FLIR made for phones and tablets is pretty much a steal in my opinion.
@@GadgetAddict Thankyou, from the Uk
you should get the pro version
His ditactad the gold
Very nice review. I've purchased the FLIR One with MSX for Android and will be getting mine at the end of February. I hadn't heard of FLIR Tools so thanks for bringing that up. I'll be making heavy use of it, especially when building myself a PC to optimize the cooling next year.
+Christoffer Ekberg I only came across Flir Tools by chance. They have a great help section in the android/iOS app but I don't think they even mention Flir Tools! Using it to assess cooling is a great idea. I wish I had the Flir one when I was trying to do my DIY Intel Nuc cooling tests!
Can we see inside the powerbank can we use the flir to scan luggage’s to detect misdeclared products
the dark red plates inside an old dead car battery is lead sulphide, put some on a old glove and then watch it.
Great review! Thanks for making this for us!👍✌🇦🇺🦜
I am wondering if Flir Two will come out any time soon.
I second Alin Solomon Have you tried using it on a car at night for enhanced driver visibility ? I would be interested about that . To see how it performs on the road , against incoming traffic and how well it observes pedestrians and hazardous objects on the side of the road. perhaps using a 8 to 10" tablet
I'll try it out and let you know. I'll need to buy another lightning extension cable because I cut open my last one for some experiments. The Flir will need to by mounted on top of the car or on the front, since it can't see through glass.
I bought the flir one for 5s iPhone and am extremely disappointed.... the usage directions seemed like they were written to a two year old... explaining stupid stuff you can do with it like track robbers in your back yard.... unless there is a way to do it on the app that I don't know about (with their excellent owners manual I cant even get a temperature to show up on the screen.... if you cant do that then this is just an over priced toy help if I am wrong
You can enable the onscreen temperature by hitting the crosshair icon. When reviewing a stored picture, you can drag that crosshair around to check the temperature of any part of the image.
you keep saying "that's pretty cool"........gotta change the lingo.....its actually "pretty warm"
Haha yeah I noticed that when I was shooting and after. I guess I just found it all pretty cool or interesting.
Great video, thanks for sharing all of the details. I just purchased one and can't wait to play around with it.
hot spot on the rails is likely an engine or running motor was idling there before the train pulled out.
That's a good possibility.
I bought one the other day, it should be delivered Tuesday. I watched your review in order to guess how well it will work for me, limitations and whatnot. I believe it will do quite well for my needs, mostly searching out air leaks in houses as well as some automotive work. Knowledge is power . Thanks for posting the review, it was quite helpful.
Awesome, I hope it works out for you :) I've been very happy with mine. The battery life has diminished a little since I first bought it, but nothing major. It's also fairly easy to replace the battery if it ever bothers me enough.
Question! Can this FLIR ONE see heat through a piece of wall board? Like hot wires inside a wall.
I'd be worried if the wires were hot enough to be seen through the wall board, but potentially it could. It can see hot water pipes under wooden floor boards.
Could you please do some tests on calibration. I would like to see if it gives accurate information on temperature variables and how fast it measures variations. I really want this camera but I want to know if it's up to the tasks I need it for.
+Joe Blogs sure, it might be a month or two before I can shoot it though. I recently did a comparison in another video with the flir one against a regular physical temp probe and they were within 0.5-1C of each other.
just thinking in the future its good to see robots as they will look human but not get as hot as we do ?
+Kriss Bartlett haha I'd never considered that but yes I think you're on to something there!
What prevents them from implementing a heating system to avoid a such usecase to better hide?
shhhhhhhhhhhh
Great video, I'm guessing that heat spot on the train track is where the train pulls up and heat is transferred to the floor before the train pulls away again leaving that 'mysterious' hot spot. I'm really interested in getting one of these for security purposes. Thanks for the video.
The hot spot might be from the track circuit connected to the rails for signaling and safety. When no train is present on the track, the track circuit relay coil is energized. When the train is present, the axles short the circuit and de-energize the relay coil. Check out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Track_circuit
This could be an inexpensive boat imager display on a large screen. Do u think there is a way to splash proof the camera with a case that only exposes the two lenses?
It has pretty tight seals as it is, I'd be surprised if it's not already splash proof. It doesn't get very hot so if you don't care about looks, you could easily seal the joints with silicon sealant or similar. I tested it with a lightning extension cable and was able to extend it away from the phone without any issues :)
I finally bought one couple nights ago.. the Android version.. came with a free battery pack from Flir. also got the noncontact circuit finder and another Ir gun. the upsells they had..
Very nice review by the way.. thanks
Does Apple பின் work on Android when use a converting adapter from lightening pin to micro USB
Nope.
Kindly let me know weather flir one for ios can be used in a android phone using adaptor, or flir for Android can be used on iPhone through adapter
It cannot :)
Great Video, and great product indeed, which I could use perhaps on a drone might it works at 50 or 60 meters? Could you confirm it would work at such a distance for ground hot spots auditing?
It's up to 30 m max
How much does it cost andwhere can we get it ? can you please post the link ?
You can get the Flir One from the official Flir website, Amazon or at most Apple stores (online and physical).
thanks
Q- I would like to buy that but doesnt it charges by phone while using . or there must be external power bank
+AlimanFX It has an internal battery and doesn't take any power from your phone or require an external powerbank. It can run for 1 to 1.5 hours on it's own battery before needing to be recharged. You can continue to use it while it's being charged :)
+Gadget Addict hmm1 hrs is more than enough for me ;) and do u know i was the one who make ur intro but i will make intro and outro for u later cuz i have exam but anyway thanks for reply;)
AlimanFX Oh hey, thanks again! I'm glad you reminded me about the intro. I was planning to try work it in to a video and test out how people react to it!
+Gadget Addict as i am teenager becuz of u i am topper in electronics in school. teachers is happy to me thanks too much so i tought to make another epic intro for u and outro
+Gadget Addict u can see my channel and i make intros ;)
Great Review. Thanks for posting
i was wondering if you where driving in a car pointing at your windshield would it still work
throw the glass ? thank you so much for your upload .....cheers
+charles philippe it won't work, it cannot 'see' through glass. Have to smash a hole in your windscreen :p
ill get started thanks
+charles philippe or a better option if you're gonna use it regularly, just use an extension cable between the phone or tablet and the Flir One. This has been tested on micro USB and lightning extensions and both work. Use that extension to mount the Flir One outside the car while you sit inside.
charles philippe Oddly enough, glass does NOT allow the thermal wavelengths to pass. It would appear as a reflective surface.
Gadget Addict , wireless would be nice if someone knew how to make one for wireless bluetooth connection plug to the flir one unit.
Excellent detailed video, thank you.
Nice piece of kit & a great tutorial, by the way I got socks for my present - tutorial coming soon lol :)
+karen berry haha yeah I got lucky :P
Do someone say Fermal?
Can you see water pipes under a road?
Ay what's the range on this yoke I might get one
can anyone confirm that this works on a iphone 5s?
I've tested it with an iPhone 5 and it works fine. Although after they made some updates to the app, the UI can be a bit finicky.
@@GadgetAddict thanks for answering my doubt.
I can't believe that seeks rival model is in some cases more money than the flir .
Yeah it doesn't make sense to me. The Flir One is much better and cheaper than the Seek Thermal.
looks like theres 3 resisters
why bodys are not clear as objects
Maybe their clothing is concealing their heat?
i meant the hands and face arent as clear as those resisters and so on.
wow that is nice wow very impressive your so smart never thought of those things on the pictures so that is how they do see if your hot in the airport I rember they pulled me over I was hot only because it was hot in the Airport thanks for that
+Kriss Bartlett haha thanks :P And yes this is the exact same brand of thermal camera used in most health check points in airports. I actually wanted to do a comparison video between my Flir one and a larger Flir thermal camera they were using in Manila (NAIA) airport. But they seemed kinda busy and I didn't want to get in the way. Plus I knew it would be a hassle trying to explain what I wanted to do :P The mind museum in Bonifacio Global City have an Airport x-ray machine that you can play with. Maybe I can suggest they also get a decent thermal camera for visitors to enjoy!
yes I know at air port there not to friendly pulled me in to a room once but I was ok that bird flu was going around and they were checking also in Singapore made us go through there to inside the Airport thanks I went to see the price wow cost a lot 150 usa and different brand was 450 us
+Kriss Bartlett For the average hobbyist they're a bit pricey. But before the Flir One there was basically no affordable thermal camera. You'd have to spend 700 or 1000 USD just to get a basic entry level camera. Now thanks for Flir you can get into thermal imaging for 150 - 250 USD and competing products are popping up. Although some of the competing products have a higher thermal resolution, most of them don't have MSX style technology that can combine a thermal and regular camera to give you a clear image.
hopefully in the future they will make a camera do all that and more cheaper fully functional camera soon it will come ok thanks interesting stuff that one for sure good post
hi @gadget addict, is there anyway that i can buy this here in the Philippines? is there any shops at malls that sells one of this? thank you :) i need this for security and DIY applications
+Louie Lansang I believe you can get it through RS-ONLINE. If they don't have local stock, they will import it from their branch/factory in another country and then deliver it to you. My understanding is that the prices on RS-ONLINE already include local PH taxes and will be delivered by a local courier, even if they have to delay your order while they process the import behind the scenes.
How much will it cost here?
Louie Lansang I think it's around 15k via rs-online :)
Sadly they are out of stock :(
Louie Lansang Dang, that sucks. I guess you'd have to use someone like JohnnyAir to get it imported from Amazon US. I dunno how much it would cost though. Mine was a christmas gift.
13:00 the main reason I need this camera.
Hey mate, great video! One question when you use time lapse can you get the spot temperature readings? or does the FLIR treat it like video where you can't use spot.
Good question. I'll try it out and let you know!
Thanks a lot man!
Did you happen to try it out yet?
great review
what do you think about putting the flirone on a UAV.
+John McKnight I think it would be awesome but it needs to be connected to your phone. So your UAV will need to support the weight of the phone and the Flir One.
It is I have had it up already
People aren't aware of an app for iOS called NovaVision. I bought it from the App Store for about $3. It is only for the flir one. What you need is a Vr headset for your phone and a charger extension. What this will do is let you use your phone on the NovaVision app while using the flir camera in the headset. The app doesn't allow msx ,which uses two images and converts it to one, but it enhances the thermal picture. I stuck a strip of Velcro on the back side of the flir one and another strip on the be headset for a hands free experience. It's really cool and I recommend getting the app and a pair of vr goggles.
This the same as Seek thermal camera?
+Al Z similar. The Flir One has a thermal camera and "normal" camera built into the single device which are then combined to give a clearer image. The seek only gives you the thermal image.
I thought infrared is thermal?
+bushgreen thermal cameras are far infrared.
all these questions if you cant take a real time measurement of the actual heat along with the ir image this is a joke
You might benefit from watching some videos about how to use the Flir One.
