Just a heads up. I’m a Level 3 Certified Thermographer and thermography is my full time job. The image of your 30amp double pole breaker (should be the one running your dryer) at 4:07 is showing the breaker is bad and needs replaced. This is based on the location of the heat within the breaker.
Probably because that’s a 2 pole breaker and the top breaker is hotter than the bottom breaker. On a 220v device the power draw and heat should be the same on both. Good eye Mikey.
First time seeing your channel. Thanks for the great FLIR comparison - exactly what I needed. Also, bloomin' love your retro tech background shelves. I'm now going to name all the things I can see: Megadrive/Genesis, GBA, Newton, VHS, iPaq, iPod, ZX Spectrum, Coleco, 3.5" floppy, 4.25" floppy, Apple II, Macintosh. That was so fun! Love a trip down memory lane.
Great review Lon. In my professional career (Glass Manufacturing) we used a lot of IR cameras to monitor the production process. They were amazingly expensive as you said - $30 to $40 thousand dollars and had a water cooling jacket. They had a rotating front surfaced mirror that would scan along the field of view. This is amazing what you can now get in a small handheld package.
Great video Lon. Question. Will the unit record and charge the battery at the same time? I'm wondering if it had a constant supply of power will this extend the use time without draining the battery.
I have a pro version. As I understand it it draws from the battery. I have had a tablet where I expected to plug in and power up but no, the battery has to charge, then the device draws from that. The unit is sealed, so not a replaceable battery either. And its not recommended by them to do that either.
I use it for work since two years now. Battery empties in 2 min (!) outdoors in around freezing. I run it connected to a power bank - only way. I use the Pro. It is ok, but not very accurate in cold weather.
I invested in the FLIR ONE PRO LT USB-C Thermal Imaging Camera and haven't regretted it, over the much lesser functional consumer version. It's well worth paying the extra money.
One thing that is kind of overlooked is that you can connect a USB power source to the Fleer one and use the camera while it's powered. This would make the time lapse a whole lot more useful...
Yes good question. You would need to have some sort of splitter where you could pass the data to the iPhone’s lightning port and charge the Flir at the same time. Wondering if the official apple dongle would work.
It seems pretty odd that those limitations on the consumer camera are surely limited by the app, like the multi point especially... That will just be a calculation done by the app, based on the data coming in that's already being used to display the thermal image
We have just got our hands on the consumer version and would love the facility to adjust the range of temperature and from what I can tell is it is limited by the app so we need to buy the more expensive version just to get the app functionality. Would much rather pay a one off £50 to upgrade to the pro version of the applications functionality - maybe its not that simple
They made a lot of nice improvement on these devices and I'm so tempted to get one to play around with. You have a good point about the lightning connector, when FLIR first released these devices it had 30-pin connectors on it and lightning just came out, so they had to discount them almost immediately. They also had issues of the app crashing and lag or improper readings. But these new revisions look good, and way cheaper than an official FLIR hardware device.
Thanks for the comparison - VERY useful regarding increased PRO resolution. HOWEVER: 1) BATTERY: when it fails, is it replaceable? 2) USB PORT DAMAGE: the big module hanging on the tiny USB port looks like a perfect tool to break the USB port socket in the phone. If you drop the phone w/unit attached (a real possibility if a contractor), it could severely damage or ruin the phone. 3) TEMP CURSOR: Is this only available while real time observation? Is the cursor available to take measurements off a pic of video?
what's with the vertical flir videos? can it shoot horizontal? or will the flir data overlays and watermark be sideways? and can you remove those data overlays?
Thanks for the video but at double the price is it really double the tech ? I don’t think so. I’m an hvac tech and I use the flir one consumer model and it works wonderfully.
Thanks for the review. I am still unsure if the Flir ONE would be up to the tast for insulation work around the house, or if the Pro has added value for this.
update aug 2022. It seems that the newest version of the FLIR ONE SW (Android 3.5.0-tsdk_620) now detects that camera type attached and does NOT allow to take videos with the cheaper Flir One. Well, this might be perceived as betrayal on the consumers. (the more, as the manual for Flir ONE on the official Teledyn Flir site still speaks about the video possibility... 😞).
Their big issue - which still seems to be cropping up - is problems with the battery. They’ll randomly stop holding a charge, be unable to charge at all, or suddenly stop charging beyond some random number. It seems more like a software error than a problem with their chemistry. I’ve had one for... three? years now, and have had a warranty replacement. They’ve been good about that, at least. My current one is slow to charge and dies quickly, so it might be time for another. They’re also still living down a terrible policy at launch where the app had to sign in to their servers or it wouldn’t open. Which would be a problem if you were, say, under a house. They removed that pretty quickly, but the product page still gets comments about it. Let that be a lesson to app designers - stupid DRM decisions will haunt you.
Great video, nice clear side by side shots. Interesting that in some examples the pro is noticeably sharper(the flame and pipes) while others not so much(the router)
Would Flir One/Pro work if there was continuous battery power? what I mean is that, could you connect a portable battery pack to charge it while you operated the device? *Not sure if someone else has asked the same question before. Thanks!
Hello, is it possible somehow to get that or a different thermal cam working on Huawei P50 pro? it has "no" Android on it, it´s huawei´s new harmony OS (What is the free Android part of Google´s android)
I’m looking to purchase a device for locating honey bee colonies behind walls. Do you think these are capable? What type of wall materials would be possible. Ie. concrete block, drywall, wood panels. How about floor tiles or bricks? Thanks for your review
This device has a known battery problem. I used mine perhaps 10 time in the year, and I'm unable to charge it now, so it stop working. What a mess! Don't waste your money, buy something you can change or replace the battery.
It isn’t. It’s basically a toy thermal. That’s what the msx is for to improve it the best they can. Any half ok thermal is 4-5k and up. This is a toy at best. And has a lot of problems from what others are saying of the battery crapping out or getting stuck in some sleep mode an things
I am hoping someone can confirm the use of such a camera to find moles/voles in my yard? What I don't know is if the dirt would insulate the moles body heat?
It seems to me that thermal image resolution isn't that big of a deal. If I needed precision like if I wanted to find out exactly which automotive fuse is drawing power I could use a cheap thermal camera to get a ball park then use my $30 laser thermometer from my kitchen to narrow it down.
I got the first gen FLIR One right after it came out for my iPhone 5. Looks like they haven’t innovated that much in 4-5 years. The Pro is better, but the base model is exactly the same as what my first gen puts out.
I really want the Pro but I have a habit of wanting the best that is offered so I'll throttle back and get the One and if I want the Pro later I can get it and have one my kids can learn with without risking my only thermal cmera.
I hope nobody was fooled and got one after watching this video! How did you get them to work, is there some 3rd party software that actually works unlike the worthless Flir software?
What? Who cares what a laptop is doing. That that thing outside on an over cast night in the woods or in a field. We know what fire looks like ,,,,It's hot as hell. I could detect that with my hand a foot away.
You remind me of the kid who asked why we needed to learn about multiplication back in second grade. Answer: It has practical uses in the real world. If that goes over your head then don't worry about it ... there are other people who do in fact find it useful.

What's wrong with the heat pattern? Where's the hot spot supposed to be in the breaker?
Probably because that’s a 2 pole breaker and the top breaker is hotter than the bottom breaker. On a 220v device the power draw and heat should be the same on both. Good eye Mikey.
Thank you for not showing 5 or more minutes unpacking the cameras.
Very compact video with all the points that I consider important.
THANKS
Lon, stop using sandpaper to clean your phone.

Yes. It is designed to run direct from the external battery.
@@catherineburton195 Flir warns against doing that in the devices manual, so while possible you probably shouldn't.
What’s the resolution of the thermal camera sensor?
I use it for work since two years now. Battery empties in 2 min (!) outdoors in around freezing. I run it connected to a power bank - only way. I use the Pro. It is ok, but not very accurate in cold weather.

Can this be used to detect mice?

I ask the same question but didn't see yours before asking. Great minds think alike. Ha ha
Yes good question. You would need to have some sort of splitter where you could pass the data to the iPhone’s lightning port and charge the Flir at the same time. Wondering if the official apple dongle would work.
assignmeanameplease The FLIR charges via a separate usb-c port, so it’s possible in theory, but I’ve never tried it with mine. I doubt it, though.
Yes but apparently the FLIR people don’t recommend it
Here’s a quick question will a flir one pro lt android work on an iPhone using an adapter
It seems pretty odd that those limitations on the consumer camera are surely limited by the app, like the multi point especially... That will just be a calculation done by the app, based on the data coming in that's already being used to display the thermal image

On the cable modem shots, were the images labelled correctly? The Pro image, to me, looks less detailed than the Flir One...

why does it appear that your reflection in the image on the computer screen is giving off a heat signature?

The Flir One from 2015 has 160x120 . I'm not overly convinced either of these is an upgrade.

Is that a SEGA Game Gear at your top shelf ??
How can you connect Flir one pro to a tv or pc? thank you
You could output the video from your phone via airplay, chromecasting, etc. These will only send images to a mobile phone directly.
@@LonSeidman Not sure how to do that but thank you
@@LonSeidman But I cannot use the flir one pro and chrome casting at the same time. There is just one lightning.
The current price 2021, is about 1/2 to 1/3 the price he mentions, on Wish, or other shopping sites.
double the price is not anyone's idea of "a little bit higher".
Thanks! Great video! 2021!
Is this good for ghost hunting?
Which is better pro or pro lt?
the pro is better!
You have a gas stove but electric dryer?
It’s a propane stove.
These are both really consumer devices. I have the Pro.
I like the idea but I'd prefer if it ran off my phones battery when plugged in.
Dammit man! Why do you do this to me? I've gotta have one :)
He didn't do a real review.

Nice & Thanks :)
"while my wife was running the clothes dryer" ...
Can I look for ufos and aliens with that? I want one for my iphone to go out at night and spy!
Nice. I will pay the price just to see who farts in the London underground train and expose them . I love tech
$200?!?! For the consumer model?!
The Pro version for Android actually costs $70 more than the iOS version.
Take that beat up old case off
Mot lord what has that iPhone been through that case is destroyed 😂😂😂😂😂
Most likely caused by house or car keys in his pocket
Absolute crap, 3rd generation and still the same issues. Don’t buy!!!
Can you explain?
