Why do some trees still have last years leaves on yet others are bare? Do i need to trim the lower section of my Hornbeam's trunk to get the avenue look im after?

Hi, landscaper here. Prune the hornbeam to create ‘clear stem’ with loppers not going too tight to the tree leaving 15- 20mm from the trunk. You can do this now before they come into leaf. Your avenue of oak looks good but you also should prune to create a clear stem, this allows the energy to concentrate on the crown. I would stop with the horse dung as it’s really needed as a soil conditioner mixed in when planting. Just throw a handful of grow ore round them a metre out from the tree, this will be absorbed and utilised far better than adding organic matter as it uses a lot of nitrogen to break down and starves the plant
