    I agree with what you said about it being kinda sad about the empty servers. Seeing all these builds that people dedicated days and weeks to with their friends while having a great time, their community now scattered to the wind and builds sitting mostly forgotten on an empty server on Minecraft, eventually never being visited again. All these memories lost to time makes me nostalgic for a time I never took part in. Thanks for posting this.

    • @NeverObsolete64
      @NeverObsolete64 11 месяцев назад +56

      yeah it's kinda sad, the community used to be way bigger than it is right now as well, the community as a whole kinda died between 2022 and now, every once and a while they'll be a lot of people on these servers but its not what i remember it being

    • @RickyWL
      @RickyWL 11 месяцев назад +16

      I've been part of communities in games that have eventually moved on, but you're right, it just isn't the same afterwards @NeverObsolete64 . Minecraft shows the very real impact of those communities on its world with building, which makes the loss of community feel a little more real than other games that consist of worlds/maps that are static, regardless of whether people are on or not. I think that's why Minecraft has a unique sense of sadness that hit me in this video despite never playing on random MC MP servers, though Kaktus is right that it allows people to take inspiration years later.

    • @Mysticfateee
      @Mysticfateee 11 месяцев назад +11

      Yeah i thought and felt the same. About half way through the video i imagined myself going through and looking at all the amazing things that took weeks or months to create and how almost nobody ever sees it... But i then realized that the server is still running despite having almost 0 players is nice to think about because those massive structures and monuments are still being honoured/respected in a way. All of these servers having almost no players really have no reason to continue running, but they do and the memories made in them will live on

    There's something special about how old MC servers elicit this feeling of liminality and that sense of wonder that exploring ancient ruins gives. Somehow the old builds in an abandoned server gives off this feeling of deep time, like it aggregates value, lore and history to the world. I would really like to replicate this in a server with friends, playing for years until at long last we mostly stop playing and all that's left are the memories imprinted on the ruins we left behind, like in that Shelley's poem:
    "Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
    Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
    Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
    The lone and level sands stretch far away."

      We played from the launch of 1.13 all the way to 1.18

    I remember back when the game first came out, maybe around 2012 or 2013, I played on a really cool anarchy server. It wasn't very well known, but it had a solid 50 or so players that were active on it. I became good friends with a lot of the players and we even had our own guild and had a really cool base inside a mountain a couple thousand blocks from spawn. I think I played on there religiously for a year or more.
    From what I remember, the server host died in an accident and 2 days later the server was just gone. All that time, all those people met and relationships were suddenly just gone.
    I played on and off since then, but the day that server was gone so was my appetite for Minecraft. Even today, I still occasionally wish I could just join that server one last time.

    something about old school megabuilds. Its before designs got hyper complicated and detailed. Mind you the current designs people make are works of art but there was something special about seeing huge structures with only 1-2 design aspects repeated. Also, paths. The older style way of connecting builds together with paths in a close proximity as people built out is probably the most nostalgic part. We almost never see that style anymore.

    I miss being a kid just randomly joining SMP servers and making friends with complete randoms online and just having a time man, I remember I met these 4 other guys and we literally had no form of communication at all but we would all collectively hop on after school and we would set times by making a schedule via signs in game. Everyone stopped hopping on one by one until I did aswell, I remember checking it back 3 years ago when the server was still alive. Good times.

    Remembering Minecraft in it’s olden days feels really nostalgic for me. I remember playing in these versions with younger online friends and just goofing around and having fun. But things have changed a lot, and I haven’t really remained in contact with anyone, and the worlds we made weren’t really saved either. Looking at this now is kind of revisiting those memories but in a new light, this is a great video.

    Former betalands player here(loyalwolf), there is an idea out there that life in this universe comes and goes, blips of consciousness in a sea of time and i feel these servers are very much that. They start with humble beginnings, a few people wanting to live out the golden age of mc again, eventually towns form that turn to cities with players linking them up with roads and railways. Cities become nations and for months and years the server thrives with projects and builds. Over time the original playerbase gets replaced either by people not having enough time to play anymore or disagreements/drama that goes down that usually results in an exodus of players. The server recovers for a brief time with a new playerbase but is not the same, the passion and care is lost by players and staff, yet some veterans still remain maintaining the infrastructure and welcoming new players in hopes of seeing a revival but even they too after months and years lose interest or have no more friends online that play. now there are very few players remaining jealously guarding what remains of the golden age of the server with years worth of knowledge of server history and stories of players to never be seen again. Then one day there is no one and all thats left are the partially griefed monuments and structures of players who spent weeks months and even years building with friends just sitting there with no one to see them again. Then eventually someone starts a new server sometimes with refugees of a previous one and it all starts again...

    I remember playing on a super old Minecraft server way back in 2011 that was really popular in my small country specifically. One of the admins/owners was some guy preteending to be Notch and spoke in the local language (that Notch would obviously not speak irl) and my 7yo self actually thought it was real. The whole place was just a naturally generated Minecraft world with people building their own houses in close proximity. I remember one of them griefing my house atleast 2 times.
    On top of that I also recall 1 or 2 other servers featuring minigames, one from back around 2011/2012 had Capture The Flag in a very sandboxy style with a cool map and tons of items to collect and use, I cannot rediscover it and it was probably my best CTF experience. The other was a big grey city map from about 2012/2013 (seemingly abandoned and in ruins), I don't remember the objective but I think it was survival based with guns and seeing other players was fairly few and far between. I have not been able to rediscover this game the decade since I played it.
    Around 2016 I believe gun based servers were also really popular they are just big city maps with customized guns like in GTA.
    I have been able to rediscover one very iconic server out of all of this though, way back from 2011 or so it had a minigame with a big castlemap and 2 teams based system. It's very nostagic.

    There was a specific balance that always hit me the best with servers of the pre-1.8beta era. Places that had a nice spawn, but it wasn't huge - you could still explore them for a few moments and feel nicely secluded in a crafted place. But both the spawn and the server wasn't full on developed to the point where it felt like so much of history has already been written yet. There was always a sense of non-purpose felt when walking around the first thousand block range from spawn and everywhere was already picked out and processed.
    The only server I played back then that catered that feeling was the old SMP Blocktopia server, which was a community I heavily enjoyed playing in with their classic 0.30 servers - while I played those Zombie Survival & Lava Survival servers the most, the beta SMP server still has the fondest memories to me for just the feel I had interacting with what was there. Making my own basic house, and exploring what other people were currently making; usually with the builders offline due to my aussie timezone.
    Also a plugin I really missed from those days was like a treasure hunting one. You'd craft a compass, right click it, and then it'll point you into a direction and tell you how close you are to a chest of some generated goods to take. It was probably one of the main contributors that got me into a passion for exploration.

    I remember playing on a server(nothing alpha or beta) a few years ago and played it absolutely religiously every afternoon from school and free time I had.
    I had a group of dedicated Skype friends who played on this server. Probably the most fun I’ll ever have in Minecraft. The one thing I remember was we all were making our own AoT walls and a bunch of moderators thought we were cheating in materials because it was fucking massive.
    No, we were just a group of nerds with far too much free time.
    Then one day that server crashed and the owner had no backups and everything restarted from new. We were all devastated.
    After that, our group of friends slowly started moving on with life or completely left their socials. I miss the days we used to play together. Some key memories were made during that period of time I won’t forget about.
    That was around 5 or so years ago.
