I didn't realize how much I missed you guys until this episode dropped. 💜 I continue to LOVE the granular level detail you all provide about all things EV! Welcome to the new members....love the new perspectives. Is there someone that is missing? I know one person left, but wasn't there someone else? I think EV always stays on brand which is to always be forward thinking/cutting edge; so the album EV3 made and makes sense. I do think that had things worked out to dawn and everyone's satisfaction behind the scenes and she stayed in the group, Ev3 would have been received better. I think the WORLD loved the original recipe of the synergy between the 4 of them. Of course us hardcore fans stayed with Max, Terry and Cindy, but I was able to see at that time that the world's enchantment with En Vogue was over. It de-throned them.😥 I remember listening to the EV3 album and having a bittersweet feeling hearing Dawns voice in the background and leads in some of the songs like "Love makes you do thangs" and "Sitting by Heaven's door". As far as that EV3 cover art....absolute perfection. It would have been nice to see Dawn with them. Lastly, I love a quartet more than a trio because they can do more in live performances. I would love to see Maxine rejoin EV and have them return to being a quartet...Just with Rhona instead of dawn. I'd love to see Max continue to do her own solo gigs like how Rhona does. That way she can enjoy the benefits of the consistent touring while working on revitalising her solo career. I think Max deserves it. ❤
Hey! Thanks! The kind words everyone's been giving us is really appreciated. :) You're thinking of Champ and Matan. Champ left and Matan is no longer part of the equation. I totally get what you're saying about missing that original magic with the OG four members. Dawn leaving was a big change, but it's cool that many of us could still vibe with the fresh perspectives the revamped EV brought. Your idea about Maxine making a comeback is pretty cool, especially with the whole juggling solo stuff while being part of the group. Who knows, your wish might just come true! 😉 Here's to hoping for exciting developments in En Vogue's journey!
A dope episode. EV3 is my favorite EV album because they branched away from recording a complete Foster-McElroy produced album (no shade but while Foster-McElroy's full album production worked for their 1st 2 albums, don't think it worked afterwards). "You're All I Need" is my favorite song and it's ironic how I always felt Dawn would kill that song better, then to find out she actually sung lead on it originally. Shot outs to whoever found that clip of it from the Soul Train Awards. Quentin said if Dawn stayed in the group he still thinks that album would've made mixed reviews but Ivan Matias had a whole conversation thread in one of the EV Facebook groups & stated the original version of the tracks he produced sounded different from the final product. His records were Dawn-centric, so maybe the original album would've been successful who knows. "Whatever" is my favorite video of there's, I love how edgy and high fashion it was. Had Dawn been there to promote it and also had they shot a separate video for the remix with O.D.B that had more of a street vibe and choreography, it could've pushed "Whatever" higher on the charts. Love the album shoot especially the outtakes and I wish Dawn was around for the album shoot & not just that DLG single cover shoot. I want them to re-release EV3 with all Dawn's original vocals. Maybe they could do a double disc, one disc with the original intended album and the other with one that was released. I think you guys should maybe do a part 2 to this video & interview Ivan Matias.
Hey! Thanks for the kinds words. Dawn's continued presence in the group might have influenced the album's reception. I really like the idea of a re-release with Dawn's original vocals. We invited Ivan to join us as a guest in the first season, and he made it clear in no uncertain terms that he's not interested in being on the podcast. lol
@@EnVogueCraze You're welcome! And LOL I'm dead at the fact Ivan won't come on the pod. Well I'm manifesting that' he'll come around like I'm manifesting a proper EV5 reunion lol.
Fantastic episode guys. Really love the new additions to the panel, and as always your in-depth analysis of all things En Vogue is second-to-none. Great job! There's way too much for me to process right now, but a few takeaways from me... Whilst I think the EV3 album likely would have seen a little more commercial success if Dawn had stayed to see the project through to the end, I think the general critical reception to the music itself would have been the same regardless. It's still a great album for sure, but I do feel like they went too Adult Contemporary with their new sound (and even some of their looks post-Whatever) and they lost a lot of their edge and energy - especially apparent when you play the Funky Divas album and EV3 back to back. As for rearranging vocals, I think they made the right choice replacing Dawn's leads on Whatever and You're All I Need with Cindy but using Terry to cover most of her leads on the older songs like Lies and My Lovin'. I think the only song they still struggle with today is on Giving Him Something He Can Feel, because Dawn's sultry vocals cannot be easily replicated - Cindy just doesn't have the right tone for it, and the one time I heard Terry performing it she delivered a pitch perfect vocal but the sexiness just wasn't there. I always thought Amanda did a great job with that song though. And lastly, I couldn't agree more with your point on the awful interview questions still being asked by interviewers today. On one hand I think the current EV team are partly to blame for this, because I can imagine a lot of vetting must go on behind the scenes before the interviews in order to protect the group's image and narrative, but on the other hand there's literally a million other questions they could ask that would give us more meaningful information whilst still being mindful and sensitive to the integrity of the group. Check out the interview from the Build Series during the Electric Café era. The guy clearly did his homework and went above and beyond in asking interesting questions that covered more than just "how did the group form?". ruclips.net/video/r9WU1366-FU/видео.htmlsi=Y24CMDms0YS1anox
1:04:52 i will go to my grave saying masterpiece theatre was failed by its production. it needed an orchestra. and i still love the album for its ambition and creativity.
Rhona doesnt get the love she deserves (in my opinion) because EnVogue fans were (are) hardcore fans of what we saw originally and thats all we want. Just my opinion. I think Rhona is amazing though.
OH YES I LOVE THIS NEW GUY QUENTIN OMG Im tuning in

49:10 oooh I’m curious: does Quentin have a kind of ideal sequence in mind that would have “let it flow” (haha) better re the EV3 album?
