- Wired2fish caught up with Berkley product designers Kyle Peterson and Aaron Wavra at Berkley Labs for an in-depth look at the Berkley PowerBait Power Switch. This unique multi-species lure features design elements that allow it to excel when used in unison with forward-facing sonar. While it performs without forward-facing sonar, the design team explains how this freestyle jig-encased plastic baitfish imitator comes to life in various depths and retrieval methods. *Electronics listing at the bottom.

Peterson and Wavra delve deep into the innovative aspects of this bait, demonstrating how it can trigger an innate response from the fish through its erratic and unpredictable darting action. Central to "video gaming" effectiveness with forward-facing, the Power Switch quickly gets down to the desired depth due to its density and design.
The uniqueness of the bait lies in its patent-pending design that delivers varied and unique actions. With the forward pull point and most of the lead in the head, the Power Switch achieves erratic, large darting actions uncommon with other baits. Additionally, it's constructed with PowerBait plastic, which emits proven scent and subtle movement at rest.
Wavra shares the story behind the creation of this bait, highlighting its inception, stemming from the advent of forward-facing sonar technology. This bait is not just a testament to innovation but a response to the changing dynamics of fishing, accommodating the needs of modern anglers to understand fish reactions quickly and adapt their lure to the fish's mood.
Expanding the range of its versatility, the Berkley PowerBait Power Switch comes in six sizes catering to different species, from panfish to walleyes, proving its adaptability and multi-species appeal. Whether working mid-water, bumping cover, or dragging along the bottom, the Power Switch is a versatile solution to catch more fish.

Hell yeah. Nice feature segment Petey!!
I love the power switch! I have caught a lot of small mouth, and some pike in the short time I have had this bait. 😊 down fall is that after a few cast you lose one or both eyes 👀, after a hand full of fish 🎣 the tail is tearing off where it meets the hook 🪝 I enjoy the bait, know it won’t last for ever, any way to make it more durable for the price 😊
I make these in my shop for over a year
I wish Berkley would make a line of Powerbait TPE plastics. I love PB, but one smallmouth will absolutely DESTROY a prerigged jig like this...
What Japanese bait did you all rip off this time ?
Who cares Joey, your CHATTY! Find something else to cry about. Don’t buy it then.
They're ripping off Americans too. They're not racist 🤭
Look up hook up baits… they are very similar not including the tail. Same action though
So what bait and rig inspired this Berkley Design? Anyone want to share their guesses?
I'll start,
Hook: Hover Rig
Bait: Spunk Shad
Johnny Schultz from fish the moment and co-owner of Core Tackle introduced it to the main stream bass fishing audience earlier this spring.
However, I have video of me pool testing a very similar setup with a Spunk Shad. Last fall maybe 🤔 I'll have to check again. It was my first video. Lol!
Edit: my video is from March. Johnny's was probably early summer.
And Gambler has a bait with the same fan tail. It's hard to believe Berkley came up with the ideas from scratch. They're just adding stuff. If they really want us to believe they're not copying because they never saw any other similar baits before, how experienced can these pros actually be? 🤭😂
The Damiki rig was years ago. People have fished it lke a Hover Rig for years. Y’all are years behind
Hard to beat Berkeley!
Hard to beat Berkley because they steal your ideas then bankrupt you.
Smh Berkley failed with the gillie still waiting on my Cullshads to b replaced and the Nessie keeps getting pushed back.
Lol 💯🎯
Lol! They deleted my comment about Cull Shads being available at Pure Fishing and Berkley. Was it the comment about customers not forgetting and definitely noticing their business practices? now including censorship? 🙈🙉🙊
I can't wait to try this on my 70 grand boat with 8 grand worth of electronics.
Jk. Ill be on a pier somewhere using something else.
Yeah because companies should only ever design baits for the exact way YOU fish.
I love all of Berkeley space I hate forward fishing sonar that's not fishing that's playing a video game I'm old school on this
Berkeley is so liberal though. 🤭
Using FFS is not fishing, it's catching. Fishing involves a lot more than junk fishing and random luck.
Berkley….
Who did you rip off this time? 😅
You don’t need a whole design studio just to copy baits……
Damn they ripped off another Japanese bait.......
We haven't seen a minnow-profile lure the same as this. The internal weighting, profile and tail action are unique. There will be hundreds of more lures that look like minnows cause that's what fish eat.
This whole livescope thing is pathetic! Also putting way more pressure on fish 😞
