- The New Berkley Gilly is one of the most realistic looking lures that I have ever seen. I think this bait is going to be a game changer if rigged properly!

As bass fisherman we have always had lures where we try to Mimmick what bass eat. I don't think any lure has nailed a bluegill quite like this one.
I was very impressed by the Berkley Gilly and the way that it swam!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I know…I say bluegill weird
It does have the bluegill look to it. But I wonder if those baits will sold in my state?
I didn't think you said bluegill weird at all. In fact, I thought if you hadn't mentioned it, I would have never even thought about it.
Every time🤣. Bluegale. I fish with a guy that likes to fish them in the shollows!!! Everyone has their little nuances, it’s what makes us fun and interesting. Keep up the great videos.
You should look at the Gill Flat. It is the bait that berkely knocked off to creat the gilly. In some of IKE's videos you'll see it on his shop bench behind him. LOL!
You’re a great fisherman I would honestly love to see you come up to my neck of the woods and catch as many fish as you do please lol
That thing is almost creepy it looks so much like a bluegill, or any sunfish for that matter. Sunfish are a major forage species in my local fisheries and I would certainly be interested to see how these perform.
I bought a pack and thought they were awesome looking and swam great BUT let me tell you the fish didnt want it at all. Fished over a 2 mile stretch of canal and had many fish chase and look at it but didnt catch a thing. Walking back i switched to a jig and proceeded to catch 10 plus bass on my way back. Ive tried the gilly a few more times without luck even when everything else is working. My opinion is it would be good in really cold water since there is very little tail movement but when the fish want any action in the bait this isnt it.
Great, straightforward and honest review. When nose hooking, try covering the barb with a small piece of the tail of a straight tail worm. It improves the weedlessness and creates the illusion of a bluegill chasing bait.
thats a money tip right there
The original by the Japan company is much better
Another sick video I am so hyped for our bass fishing season starting in 3 weeks here in 🇨🇦 we still have ice over our water eh can’t wait for the trout and bass season eh tabernac. We will be up to our tits in bass this season eh!
The hitch hiker method is much like the Banjo minnow rigging.
In that rig though, a weed less khale hook was employed.
This would allow your setup to function in more than just open water.
I heard you said you use the 5/0 twist lock hook for the 110 and I was just curious what size do you recommend for the 90mm size
I've been using 3/0, seems to fit perfect, also suggest a small nail weight pushed into the belly to keep upright when burning it in. Can also use a line through setup with a treble hook on the bottom or for deeper applications I've been using the berkley fusion 19 weighted wacky hooks and a nail weight in the belly for balance
Great review and tutorial on this rig. Just got the 110mm and 90mm and chomping to get out on the lake with these baits.
2/0 is recommended with 90
Im stoked your doing a video on this, but also, It's just gonna make them harder to get like the bounty fish lol.
The importance of honest, unbiased reviews online can not be overstated. Too many products being pitched in paid promotions and, don't get me wrong, I'm not begrudging anyone from earning a living but I place a lot more value on unbiased reviews. Thanks for another good one Ty!
That nose hook rigging is the best alternative to the side rigging that I’ve seen so far. I have some being delivered today so I will definitely try it. Thanks for the info.
I definitely Gotta Getta Gilly. Thanks for sharing 👍
As soon as these came out I picked up 6 packs. 2 of each size. Was using these before seeing this. I tried rigging them like Ike suggested in his video, which is the side rig with the nail weight. I lost 3 of them because they just kept ripping off of the hook during casts. So I evicted them from my bag. I like what you have done with the screw lock instead of rigging it Texas rig style. I'll have to revisit this bait with that.
Ive had my eye on the gilly and been lookin for them lately. Did actually find out where they have some in stock finally. Thank you for your time and great content
I really enjoy the way you deep dive into the subject, today being the Gilly.
I haven't used it yet, but this puts us ahead of the curve, thanks!
Been wanting to review these as well! Haven't seen them around my local stores here in Kentucky though. Thanks for the insights!
Let's be real these things don't exist I ordered them almost a year ago still haven't seen any come in yet
been telling guys who where having issues with it staying upright since the issei gill set is nose hooked and is the original of this bait. I just recommend same rigging and u ended up making a video about it so kinda was cool for the reassurance and also if want it to be a little weedless a wire guard wacky hook would work really well on the nose hook.
I think bluegill profile swimbaits are overrated in general
if I could cast like you I would just use a pop tab with a hook on it
Thanks Ty, nice video with useful info as always..!! I would love to see a second part after you’ve fished it for a while, you always come up with great fishing new ideas.
ive got sum the OG jdm gill flat but ive had trouble trying to find out the best to rig it bc i hate to waste the lures experimenting. So thanks for the ideas
What timing! I just ordered some of the gilly baits and am so happy to see that you did a lot of the testing for me already. Thank you!
I've seen tons of these and now I think I'm going to pick them up. Because everywhere I go I see tons like at least 30 of bluegill
You definitely should be over 200k subscribers.... You give great information
This bait really works. I catch a lot of fish with the 90 and the 110 size I use the screw hook side hooked and the nail weight just like he says.
I bought quite a few and I’m really looking forward to fishing them, they have a very distinct smell!
Which size and color is most effective? Never mind I finally found it so bought them today
I'm expecting four packs of them next week.
2 pumpkin seed and 2 bluegill. 🎣
I wondering you guys in the US often use lower then 20lbs braid, I only use 12lbs for bfs fishing, normally 20-25lbs braid is perfect imo for any bait from 3g for distance and swimming action
I know this video old bt I’m learning lures this year because I’m a live bait user… if the bait look injured gives you a better chance in my opinion… bt I’m definitely a fan and soaking up your knowledge
Ike had a soft plastic called the DEVILS SPEAR. I’ve got a BUNCH of the them.
lol, so you're pushing this lure and you don't even have hard evidence that it worked. Odd. So why take the time to make a video. Here's one, my ham and cheese sammich worked too but I don't have a video. It's going to be a "game changer" if rigged right lol.... You don't even have a video of you using it to catch fish. "game changer"? come on now. This truly is "made for TV".
stayed to see rigging options/tips because I have the 110 size, for the rigging
I was unsure the best way to keep it straight and swimming right.
Finally a good review of this bait. I’d love to see a side by side of the it next to the JDM version.
Didn't Berkeley make a prior version of this bait? It didn't have the waffling on the sides like the gilly does but otherwise looked identical, except I believe they were weighted and pre rigged. I have some of them in an old tackle box I had forgotten about and rediscovered a couple days ago. Pretty sure they're Berkeley. If so, any recommendations for using or modifying that version? Anyone else have these?
I like it.
Good video. Ike has a fantastic video on the gilly. Lots of different ways to rig the gilly.
Why not use the Berkeley fusion hook? !That’s stupid! Of course it was made to use with a freaking fusion hook ! Get a clue Ty!
I’m kicking myself for not throwing mine around dock lights the other night. They looked like spooky submarines in the shadows but I was trying to pull crappie out that weren’t in the mood to bite. Sometimes you can’t take a hint.
Awesome tip and thanks for taking your valuable time to make it
I love honest reviews people push products just to get you to click the link so they can get paid
I got the 130 version. I love the action but the material doesn’t last long at the mouth. It rips easily. A good rigging option is the line through with the treble at the bottom.
Grab a bottle of Mend-It - worth every penny and lets you fix those torn out heads / noses, I even reattached the tail section of a Gilly with it
@@SasquatchTX That’s a great idea. Thanks
Excellent Tyler have a few of the gillys waiting to try them out! Awesome review sir thank you!
I put them on a flippin hook and flip around heavy cover and docks or wood or whatever. It’s a great flippin bait.
With a pegged weight or weightless ?
@@jeufuyang6261 pegged weight. I don’t flip weightless really unless I’m throwing around a senko.
@@jeufuyang6261 in theory, pitchin this little bait around docks and timber weightless would probably do really well. Dying bait fish look would make them go crazy possibly.
@@jayteefishing1543 thanks for the reply! I’m goin to try this in the delta punching and flipping with this lure hope it works !
@@jayteefishing1543 with the pegged weight does it just swim/ hop sideways since will have to rig it through the sides ?
I know there are a hundred ways to fish this Gilly lure but i had read that Berkley designer Mike Iconelli wanted this to look like a wounded bluegill, hence the side hook up. Just saying.
The gilly is badass, but the 90 takes some work to get it to actually work. Definitely much better in the bigger sizes. I put to pin weights in its head and then ran a circle hook through the eyes. Swims perfect and adding the weight in the head gives it the best action
Truth
Berkley hasn't been shy with the knockoffs lately
Things like this are good for us as anglers and consumers. Otherwise you would play hell trying to get the gill-flat AND pay more. Berkley making their own version and making it more available for north american anglers is a GOOD thing. The whole lure industry is built on taking tried and true lures and making your own version of it. Senkos came out and were the craze and expensive considering. Now tons of companies have their own stick worm.
One issue with either the 90 or 110 that even with a nail weight it sinks EXTREMELY slow.
Just get the banjo minnow tell ya what I caught a 12lbs bass on the chartreuse banjo minnow
My goodness, you're just talking and your wiggling it in your hand and it looks like a live bluegill.
IDK, I've never seen a gill with fins on the tail or a bunch of lazer cut bumps on it.
Tried them, don’t like them. Mostly aggravated that rigging is a nightmare on the side option and once the nose tears the bait is done. Took way to long messing with trying to get the bait to swim naturally and not halfway on its side. Too much time wasted when needed to have bait in the water to catch fish. Good luck to all of you master this.
Just purchased the Gilly bait and will give it a go this afternoon.
I'm going to try the line through with a rivet pinhead and have a treble hook, not sure if it'll skip with the treble or not
What is that topwater bait that rotates at the beginning of the video called? Looks interesting
These are nice and I will be trying them. However, Savage Gear, Live Target and Huddleston “in my opinion” makes the most realistic looking baits period. Especially the bluegill. And the realistic swim actions are on point as well. Again, I will be purchasing these to give them a try.
I would agree...savage gear, judds, & live target are my swimbaits...savage gear pulse tail Bluegill is FANTASTIC
Better watch out for Berkley. They have shaken the lure business!
I bought some today! I can’t wait to try them this weekend!!’
Weighted weedless wacky rig hooks work for the Gilly.
I have been nose hooking them on a drop shot this winter here in Missouri with great success biggest has been 5lb 8 oz
When u hook it with the lines on the side what size hook for a 90mm? I been trying a 2 seems to big
still can't find it anywhere and bass pro hasnt been stocking them
Bonjour,
J'aimerai savoir si se leurre est disponible en France ? Il a l'air terrible ! 🎣🎣
I bought the 90 today and ready to try it. Nice cool cloudy day in S. Ga
The zako would be a better bait. This one disappointed me
The 90 side hooked would be awesome for bed fishing
Tackle warehouse back ordered for months
How can I hook my gilly without the twisted lock hook
hey can you or have you ever reviewed the multi jointed lures
Doing a review with a bait but no camera….waste of time…
If you stop the gilly while hooked in its side then it flips over
I just picked some up. Gonna try them soon
VMC makes a weedless dropshot hook so there you go
Wear u get them I like blue gill I going get alot of them
Definitely goin to hammonds fishing in the morning
Do you have a video of you fishing with the gilly
Where'd you learn to nose hook them, like that????? You must've had a BANJO MINNOW!!!!!
Tactical Bassin did a tutorial on flukes rigged that way..soo I'm guessing there
Where can I get the twist locks from
I just got a pack!!! So thank you!!!!!
Late to the dance….these are already been out there….
I have never seen them thank you
Hey what size nail wait are you using
Great video.. very informative
WHAT!! A fisherman that likes to review new lures?? Say it ain't so!! And you lost me the SECOND you called Japanese lures "JDM" bro give me a break.
These were a direct knock off, and the issea gill flat has been easy to get in the US. Don’t justify berkley ripping everyone off.
Do you ever throw a yum dinger or just Senkos?if it's cheaper for us who cares?
Will the gilly work on walleyes?
Is the 110 the HD sunfish?
I wanna use that for pike 😊
I bought some packs...not real impressed...tear ridiculously easy..did however put it on as a chatterbait trailer..looks real good
Has anyone caught anything on these yet?
Looks like it would be a helluva bed fishing bait
It is!
For $600, it's a steal.
I havnt been, I mean I love the way it looks swims etc.. but, I Have yet to have any successful results, I threw the pumpkinseed HD on bass beds thinking they would hammer
It, nothing I've rigged it three ways and it looks great, had fish follow it yet no luck switched over to the jackhammer and bam producttion
I fish almost exclusively farm ponds in NW Indiana, and bluegill aren't just the primary bass forage here, they're the ONLY forage. Excited to try these.....
Where do you buy your JDM lures.
Then sponsored another company
Supurb presentation 👍
Gonna have figure a way to get line thrust middle and use a trebbile hook. Maybe take a coffee stir thing . Kind that is round like a small straw, thing bout that is gotta seal up hole if it gets to big. Just worried bout hook on side rig. Gonna go to bass pro tomorrow just get some. Bout hour drive one-way. LET'S GO!!!!
I would crack up if about a 10lber grabbed that lure while you were filming/holding it underwater...
