How did this escape radio playlists across America back in '66?! How do you not hear this and automatically proclaim, "We're putting this on the air NOW!" It's so strange how The Who missed 1965 and 1966 in America and then hit in '67 with "Happy Jack?"
He wrote my teenage life story! This song's special, because I did go away and left my GF with the crowd we hung out with. Sadly, it was my 'folks who wouldn't let us!'
POPSIDE Swedish TV WHO Special, recorded June 3 and broadcasted June 5, 1966 (as indicated on private DVD : Maximum Who - Early TV Performances 1965-67)...The rivalry between band members is obvious here as you see Roger, the Shepherd's Bush geezer, coming up with the mike to John and the Quiet One says : "Keep it away!" telling Roger to stay away from him while he attempts to be spokesman for the band just this once, ushersing a few words between his teeth to introduce the next song : "Hullo, I'm John... Next number is... Kids! is alright" and Roger applauds loudly, caughing to stop himself from larfing out loud, while John thumbs him to remain down, and Moon slaps his sticks applauding too in sarcastic support. Right after, during the song start, Roger turns to John singin' : "... That's Fine..." signaling it was ok, relax dude... Must've been fights backstage! (lol)
Sometime in the early '70s (I believe) one of Pete's assistants (could have been a manager) asked him what Pete wanted him to do with a bunch of film and live recordingsfrom the '60s that were building up. He kept bugging Pete about it, and Pete finally said,"Oh, just take it out and burn the lot." And he DID! Pete-- in his autobiography-- said that was one of the big mistakes of his life.
No, not really. The Who taped mostly every show on their US tour in the fall of 1969, for a future live album. Pete had no desire to go thru hours and hours of shows,so he supposedly told soundman Bobby Pridden to burn all the tapes. They would just tape their Feb 1970 concerts at Leeds and Hull, and get the record from there. Live At Leeds has since been named the greatest live rock record by many rock fans. As for the tapes: Bobby and Pete insist they were burned. However, parts of over a dozen of those shows have turned up as bootlegs. So, the burning story is highly suspect.
@@edmurphy7217 Well, the story came from Pet's book, so I guess you're questioning him? Bootleg tapes could be second generation dubs and the masters still burned.

I assure you, the dates, names, and specifics I’ve provided to your “version “ of this story, are 100% accurate. The ONLY part that is in any dispute is , if in fact the audio tapes from the 1969 Fall US tour were actually burned in a bonfire. ( Incidentally, Pete has claimed that he burned them, and later changed it to Pridden. But, that’s just Pete being Pete) I merely cleared up your vague memory.

Maybe in England, but youth actually started in the late thirties in America with the early Jitterbugs and Bobby Soxers, lindy-hopping to Swing Jazz... The First TEENs were into Jazz Swing, the forerunner to Rock'n'Roll revolution ;-)
@@AstroMockerSelector Youth aren't the dominating force or western culture until the late 50's/early 60's I'm afraid, so I cannot agree with what you say here. Unless it was to make the point that there were teenagers prior to the 60's, which probably most of us knew already.

Wow! Odd set-up at 1:14 . I've never seen them aligned like that before....Moon superb here; even when he drums conventionally, his beat is special-- check out 1:22
I'm now too old to find rock music interesting but the quality of even their early early work is crazy. Having not listened to them in years, they sound like west coast garage rock... not how I remember them at all.
@@fernandooliveira3432 Not a chance. Bonham sounded like a caveman playing garbage cans with a pair of clubs for sticks. Moon was pure class on everything he played on.
It was a technical issue, most TV studios were to small to afford proper amps and record them live. That's why all Top of the Pops performances were synched.
Back then they would often record a version of the song in the TV studio, then lip synch and fake play to that version of the song. This one sounds different than the regular single and album versions. The vocals surely are.
Roger is tweaking on speed here, touching his face and rubbing his nose a lot, looking around all uncomfortable and too nervous.. that is tweaking! The mods did tons of speed back then.
Roger avoided leapers because they affected his voice too badly. The big fight that almost broke up The Who was Roger being infuriated at the rest of the group taking too much speed and playing crap.
This includes the instrumental break from 2:12 to 2:34 that was edited out of the single release. I prefer the shorter single, maybe because that was all I knew for decades.
So, it sounds like a recorded version or is it live? Why don’t the guitars have cords and where are the amps? But, Keith Moon does look like he is really grooving on the drums….
Reply to self - it’s lip sync to the recorded version - sounds just the same - plus I don’t see John and Pete singing on some of the harmony parts. I still don’t know how they handled Keith’s drumming - which looks authentic.

Sublime Music Channel , maybe teenagers were non-existant as an entity OUTSIDE of the States, but it was ALREADY in the US; you people from Britain, and everywhere else, even in HK you had to wait for the late 50’s for Youth to be reckonned as a force, economical and political (it was a States’ invention after all! ), I’m sorry to contradict you.
Sublime Music Channel , PS : just check these American Swing Kids during War time and tell me they’re no Teenage cult with proper clothing and lingo ...

Some people don't know much about history. Kids were kids since the 20's at least.
最高やん😂‼️初期の最高傑作‼️
Damn ! Roger put the mike up to Keith to do the 3 beat ending but they cut the video. Whats the deal here? Keith sure seems to be playing but the guitar and bass arent plugged in (this is TV).
Wow! Odd set-up at 1:14 . I've never seen them aligned like that before....Moon superb here; even when he drums conventionally, his beat is special-- check out 1:22
They created their real Who-style years later. This sounds like any other band from the 60s.
Brilliant !!!!!!!!!!
Eran buenos. Qué leches. Eran superlativos.
Keith never played a song the same twice, even when he was just syncing
Keith Moon greatest!!!!
I'm now too old to find rock music interesting but the quality of even their early early work is crazy. Having not listened to them in years, they sound like west coast garage rock... not how I remember them at all.
Brilliant
Keith moon....... no one comes near him in my opinion...just another level of drumming
John Bonham from Led Zeppelin sure beats him
@@fernandooliveira3432 Not a chance. Bonham sounded like a caveman playing garbage cans with a pair of clubs for sticks. Moon was pure class on everything he played on.
@@robertbykowski1398 both brilliant in a unique way
Joey Jordison
KEITH WILL ALWAYS BE THE DRUMMER ROCK GOD OF ALL-TIME. ENOUGH SAID!!!!. CLASS OF ROCKIN 84 HERE , ROCK ON AH!!!!.
TOTALLY Amazing 😂
Poor john not surprised he was anxious
So sweet and innocent....little did we know, lol
And lovable & cuddly
Alice Cooper : "Ringo is great, Charlie Watts is great BUT Keith is an octopus. He's irreplecable " 👍
Entwistle was the best rock bassist in history!
He invented the Doom Metal
I wanna say this. Heavy metal you take credit for the double bass drum? No sir Keith moon!!!!
Lip synching? Guitars not plugged in, no amps. Not judging . Everybody did it back then. Love the song.
Mr perfect xx
British TV did it a lot, probably because of the Ed Sullivan show issues when performers went off script
Yes; they at least do this performance to a mix of the track that doesn't contain Daltrey's double-tracked vocal.
ESTAVA NA ROCA DOS MEUS AVOS , ESTAVA ESCUTANDO THE WHO .... QUE DEUS ABENCOES TODOS LA ..... SE DEUS QUISER VOU MUDAR PARA LA DENOVO
I know, he's so adorable, I could just cuddle him!
No , he is OK, you are an internet either...
just...pure...truth
This includes the instrumental break from 2:12 to 2:34 that was edited out of the single release. I prefer the shorter single, maybe because that was all I knew for decades.
So, it sounds like a recorded version or is it live? Why don’t the guitars have cords and where are the amps? But, Keith Moon does look like he is really grooving on the drums….
Reply to self - it’s lip sync to the recorded version - sounds just the same - plus I don’t see John and Pete singing on some of the harmony parts. I still don’t know how they handled Keith’s drumming - which looks authentic.
Dig the early Who. Their songs are pretty cool .
Heaven.......
Whoa unaltered lead vocal!
John Entwistle never moved so fast since!
Brilliant.
