    Great video. I immediately jumped in (pun intended) to underwater photography and have been shooting semi professionally for years. After buying rigs and back up cameras in excess of 20K every time new versions came out, and paying hundreds of dollars in excess baggage fees I decided to get a gopro 7, then 9 and now 10 and use two Big Blue Black Molly dive lights on an underwater tray. I can shoot video, stills, edit and post easily and without breaking the bank or my back carrying gear. I never check my cameras any more and travel is oh so easy now. Since most of the underwater images shot by divers ends up on social media, email or prints, they don't require the large number of pixels high end cameras have. It is funny to me that the GoPro 10 shoots at twice the megapixels as my original Nikon D300! The evolution of dive and action cameras is a game changer for underwater enthusiasts and is not going away. BTW I would love to see a video having a professional shoot the same images using the three cameras.

    I totally agree with you, I used all of them Gopro6, TG5 and a d7200 setup (better picture quality than omd) underwater and I can get great pictures from all three. It is about your composition and light play.
    With that being said, if all condition are equal the dslr/mirrorless setup can produce much better pictures due to better image quality. Great video, keep it up!

    Great video, fun to watch and educative. I totally get your point, you can get pretty good results with cheap gear and being creative. Surely the pro gear shines in other scenarios like super macro, but for the casual diver that wants to post something cool on instagram, an action cam is all you need.

    I have to say, the TG-6 really shines on macro shots! Now I understand what's the hype all about with that point and shoot. And since I am not willing to bring my a9 underwater, I'll probably just get the TG-6 with the official case 😅

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  3 года назад +1

      That's a very good observation. As always it's about the right tools for the trade. I think that GoPro often is my choice for video, my DSLR for macro and portrait, and I agree wirh your analysis as well about TG6 for macro!

      @@DiveSAGA Your GoPro stills are superb though (and especially since it's a very old GoPro model). I'm more of a stills guy than a video guy but I just got into diving very recently so I still cannot manage real rigs like with that guy with the OMD (not to mention the reliable cases are super expensive 🤣)

    • @DiveSAGA

      @@zerovisdiver definitely. I think the GoPro in linear mode with a distance of 5-10 feet from the subject and an extra light source, is excellent for most purposes!

    Thanks for this! Question - you said you took off the magenta filter, did you do any white balancing without it or just shoot auto with the Kraken torch? Any reason you ditched the filter? Thanks!

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA  5 лет назад +1

      Good question. The torch isn't filtered either so the direct light source removes the need for a filter on the camera!

    • @jameswang4706

      DiveSAGA Thanks! I was actually thinking if the torch is 5600k then no need for filter. Great results, look forward to trying it out next time I dive. P.S. We actually just finished Open Water Advanced with Bay Islands College, Shawn was always a big help!

    This isn't really a fair test. I'd have a good photographer (or an beginner putting everything on auto if you wanted to go that way) take out each of the cameras as there seemed to be some skill differences there. (Either that, or I'm not sure if not great photos were being cherry picked for the professional set up.) The professional ones were sometimes taken further away from the subject, facing downwards, overblown highlights, not color corrected ideally etc. Also post processing was mentioned, but not done. That's where a camera that doesn't shoot in raw is going to start showing more disadvantages. Also in low light. You're in a very bright, clear set up. Try the same thing in darker, murkier water and the differences will also likely start to show more. All things being equal, you can usually get better photos out of an expensive camera set up with strobes. BUT there are some things that the gopro is really good at. (I have a mid level set up (compact + single strobe) and my old gopro has much better video, and can take some great wider lens and action shots that rival (or are sometimes better in some instances) than the camera.)
    I do see what I think you're getting at in the end though, a lot of it does have to do with technique and playing to the strengths of your set up to get nice photos out of it. You can have a great set up, but if you don't know what you're doing, can take mediocre photos, where as a gopro is pretty bombproof and will take consistently decent images in the hands of a beginner, and can take great ones if someone knows how to use one well.
    You can get great photos out of gopros or basic camera set ups, especially with enough practice and they are less bulky to lug around so definitely have their benefits over a professional set up. As a beginner, working on basics (like composition) can be a far better use of your time than delaying buying a camera until you can afford something expensive, then fiddling around with all the settings trying to learn what everything does and losing the bigger picture. Problem with the gopro is that it is quite limited though if you want to keep going and do more, as everything is on automatic. The later model gopros are starting to get pricey, it may be better off going for something a little higher like one of the TG's. (Nothing wrong with a cheap earlier model gopro though to start out with if you can get it!)

      @@TheFlameMaster321 True, there are people using a micro 4/3 sensor on photocompetitions like the world championships Underwater photography 2023 and don't do it bad. I also have a picture in a museum made with an Olympus camera. But I also must say that in a museum in Leeuwarden, Netherlands also is a picture of me made with a cheap goproclone of less than 200 Euro. You must know the limits of your camera. In caves or dark water, Olympus is way much better than any gopro, even the 12. For macro the TG is a very good option.
