Layne Staley was actually a professionally trained singer if I remember reading correctly. He had been in a previous band prior to AIC, with a very similar name, and on their scene was known as a hell of a singer. To answer your question, Alice In Chains falls under Grunge Metal. They actually rose up as part of the big 4 of Grunge from Seattle in the late '80s, with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana! :🙂 That being said, R.I.P. Layne 😭 Also, the members in this lineup of the vid are Layne Staley - Vocals, Jerry Cantrell - Guitar, Mike Starr - Bass, Sean Kinney, Drums. Then Mike Inez replaced Starr in like, 1994? and their current lineup is: William DuVall - Vocals & Rhythm Guitar, Inez on bass, etc. Other songs to check out: "Man In The Box" "Would?" Bro what makes this band so awesome was that they were all struggling through seruous issues like addiction and personal problems, but they somehow translated that so well into their music. Layne Staley (lead singer) had a crippling heroin addiction but he always wrote and sang about it in their music. You can hear the pain in his voice. And no matter what they were going through they always gave it their all on stage (just check out literally any live performance by them). Greatest fucking band ever.
Great reaction my man and a great song choice to introduce yourself to the band. It’s fast, hard and catchy, and if you like this, you’ll also enjoy their other big hits: Would, Rooster, Man in the Box, etc. The lead singer is Layne Staley, and he is amazing. Wait til you hear his power and range on some of their other songs......goosebumps.
Jerry Cantrell the guitarist was the songwriter for this and a majority of their songs. However during the initial recording of this when they were starting to play, Layne Staley(lead singer) said 'I hear a yell here' and so the startling AHHHH! you hear at the beginning is what Layne came up with.
Alice In Chains is a great rabbit hole to go down. As others have said, this is called grunge rock. It is, imo, a form of hard rock because of the volume, tempo and reliance on driving 4 beats/bar, guitars and drums as the central structure of the music. But grunge had a different feel than earlier hard rock. It was darker, more pessimistic, a rebellion, in the 90s, against the genres of disco, new wave and glam rock. A sort of ‘back to basics’ movement.
You need to listen to Stone Temple Pilots. Either Interstate Love Song or Creep! They are two of their best songs. RIP Scott Weiland. Hell of a vocalist !!!
There are so many great AIC songs. Rain When I Die Rotten Apple Love Hate Love Rooster The list goes on! Thank you for doing AIC. Oh and MTV’s Unplugged Alice in Chains
Great tune to start with! AIC is arguably the best band to come out of the seattle grunge scene, even though they considered themselves more of a metal band. The album Dirt, for which this is the opening track, is fantastic from beginning to end. For other killer AIC check out: Would Rain When I Die Man in a Box Down in a Hole Nutshell and a whole bunch of others...
What I love about reaction channels is, woke rap fans. For years I've said how can the younger generation that grew up with Hip Hop and rap not like the rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. I'm so ecstatic that a lot of rap fans are discovering the music that touched me and what i came of age from. Keep doing what you're doing I'm a big fan of you and your channel. I can't get enough of first time reactions.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell said he wrote THEM BONES about "mortality, that one of these days we'll end up a pile of bones." He told RIP magazine in 1993: "THEM BONES is pretty cut and dried. It's a little sarcastic, but it's pretty much about dealing with your mortality and life. Everybody's going to die someday. Instead of being afraid of it, that's the way it is: so enjoy the time you've got. Live as much as you can, have as much fun as possible. Face your fear and live. I had family members die at a fairly early age; so I've always had kind of a phobia about it. Death freaks me out. I think it freaks a lot of people out. It's the end of life, depending on your views. It's a pretty scary thing. THEM BONES is trying to put that thought to rest. Use what you have left, and use it well." The drummer is Sean Kinney. He developed the heavy kick-drum early on in AIC's formation and that heavy kick-drum is the foundation of the AIC sound. When Layne sang THEM BONES live, there were times he didn't do the 4 screams at the beginning but will do the screams in the middle. When they did their first KISS concert in Tiger Stadium in Detroit in 1996, Layne didn't do the first 4 screams... but the screams in the middle of the song.... it was the definition of screaming pain. Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful. Several years after Layne’s passing Barrett got a call from an old friend in Massachusetts who had a couple of young children. While on a family drive through the countryside, he was playing the Above album when the last song on the album, “All Alone,” came on. One of the little ones in the back seat asked if there were angels singing on the song, a question that he relayed to Barrett over the phone. “Yeah, he was a certain kind of angel,” Martin said, “a dark one perhaps, but an angel all the same.” Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine said Layne sang like an angry angel. Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life. Layne was on this earth for 34 years. In that time he wrote songs that gave a normal person insight into the mind and journey of an addict. The pain and depression he endured to write the most brutally honest lyrics a musician could write concerning his feelings on his own addiction and the emotional and physical strength he had to perform those songs live when all he wanted to do was curl away and lose himself in the drug haze I can’t imagine what it was like for him. He was hounded by the press about his addiction. He was ridiculed for his addiction. The music industry blackballed him for his addiction. The Grammys forgot about him when he died. As far as MTV and Rolling Stone were concerned he’s just another addicted singer. They don’t want to acknowledge his contributions to music. I could say so much more, but in the end, it all boils down to: Layne Staley deserved better than what he received from the people around him who he thought mattered. He wrote about things with maturity and knowledge well beyond his years. He didn’t deserve to be turned into tabloid cannon fodder by the press.
It was exactly right because in the end we are all going to be a pile of bones! Thank you so much for all the information That’s one thing I love about this channel you guys my subscribers give me so much info about these bands and artists
@@RobSquadReactions Layne Staley was better live than studio version -- one of the few singers who are better live. Layne was an extremely intelligent, humorous, and gracious human being, and he cared about things like politeness and kindness to strangers, qualities that seem to be forgotten in today’s narcissistic, nihilistic culture. He laughed easily and talked openly with his fans, and his guest list at shows was always reserved for the young, marginalized people who couldn’t afford to buy a ticket. Those were Layne’s people, the ones without a voice, and through the power of poetic language, Layne gave them a voice. Jerry wrote ROOSTER about his father's experiences in Vietnam and when Jerry saw his dad in the audience at one of their shows, Jerry asked Layne (and the guys) to play Rooster and they did. It was the first time Jerry's dad heard Jerry's music and knew that his son understood him through that song. It brought Jerry and his dad closer together. And Layne had a vital part in that reunion. (Meanwhile, Layne's own biological father was an opportunist) Jerry met Layne just as his whole world blew up with his grandmother and mother dying within 5 months of each other. He lost the house within the year. He had no home, little money left. Layne (drunkenly) offered Jerry a place to live and a job at the Music Bank (a 50-room rehearsal hall where Layne stayed and worked letting bands in and locking up when the bands left). Layne had done so much for Jerry, giving him a place to live, money, clothes, food, guitars and gear, a band when he gave Jerry the number to contact Sean Kinney and through him, bass player Mike Starr. Layne gave Jerry a life that could NOT fail unless Jerry let it happen. But getting a front-row seat to watch what had happened to Layne over the years, Jerry had to watch his best friend deteriorate in a span of 12 years (1990-2002), and Jerry couldn't do anything about it. Jerry had talked himself blue in the face but Layne didn't want help. Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. Whenever Jerry wanted Alice In Chains to work on something, he ALWAYS wanted Layne to sing. He never thought of replacing Layne while Layne was still alive. Layne encouraged Jerry to sing more, after all, they were Jerry's lyrics he should sing them. Vice-versa, Jerry encouraged Layne to play the guitar which is how you get Layne playing guitar on HATE TO FEEL and ANGRY CHAIR as well as I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING on the Mad Season Above album. Jerry encouraged him on the guitar and was proud that Layne grew as a guitarist. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine taught Layne more chords than ANGRY CHAIR and HATE TO FEEL. The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team. Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway." There definitely is not enough space in a book-long comment to explain Layne's voice and what he was able to do with it, how he stacked his own vocals with harmonies and melodies underneath... how he could come up with those lyrics, harmonies, melodies off the top of his head, and what he could do with his voice live. So, I'll leave you with these quotes... "My grandmother and mother were such huge losses, but I got Layne, the guys, and I got this.” - Jerry Cantrell, Kerrang! (December 1, 2018) “Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died). "Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." -- Layne Staley "My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title." -- Layne Staley "When I tried drugs they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell and this sucks. I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn't want my fans to think heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen." -- Layne Staley "I'm not into religion, but I have a good grasp on my spirituality. I just believe that I'm not the greatest power on this earth. I didn’t create myself, because I would have done a hell of a better job." ~ Layne Staley
Layne was a great singer, they were grunge from Seattle. Please listen to "Would?", "Dam the river", "angry chair", "down in a hole", "stickman", "junkhead", "no excuses" & "rooster". They also did an Unplugged performance on Mtv, which is unbelievable good. But Layne struggled w/ heroin & finally died alone from the addiction. But their catalog is so, so good from hard rockin' to beautiful acoustic. RIP Layne.
It’s so awesome that AIC (original) is continually being reintroduced/rediscovered by ppl who were either not alive or not aware or simply not into that type music when they broke through. It’s hard to slap a label on them-grunge vs metal vs rock, because they were a bit of it all PLUS some dirty blues thrown in. They were/are so very talented….and Layne, he was simply in a league of his own. He was special-he was more than just an awesome singer…..he had a way to pull you in and rip feelings straight out of you with his performance.
I have a friend who is the lead singer in a metal band, I asked him if his throat ever hurts afterwards or the next day. He said it doesn't, but that's because metal vocalists learn how to sing the right way and their vocal cords become stronger.
They don't have anything but bangers. They were a phenomenal band. One of the big 4 of the grunge era including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Sound Garden, although arguably, AIC might straddle the metal line a bit more than those others. You really need Man in The Box and Rooster in your life. I hesitate to ask for the official video for Rooster on a first listen. You may want the audio for the first listen. The visuals are a bit overwhelming, but they do help to get the point of the song across.
Yes,yes NIRVANA my favorite now & then. Hated it when I heard Kurt Cobain died. Pearl Jam is great too. Music lives on so the memories will remain alive. SIGNED 💋 Akita, 🇺🇸 👵FAN
Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and now Layne Staley..... all of our dead rock gods.... RIP Yes, Layne Staley's voice was an absolute beast. He'd open his mouth and unreal sounds would come out of it. He was an absolute legend. Alice In Chains is the greatest grunge band of all time. I recommend checking out 'Rooster', 'Man In The Box', and 'Heaven Beside You'. Also, for other legendary grunge bands, I recommend Pearl Jam, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Bush, and Stone Temple Pilots.
This kind of vocal style is actually pretty easy to learn. But you have to do it right and practice for a few months, before you can do it without hurting yourself.
Alice in Chains is dark and moody. Their songs were often about depressing thoughts like death, they also talk about drug use as they were all addicts back in the day, having said that they know how to rock. Layne's voice is amazing, unfortunately he passed away in 2002. Jerry's a great guitarist who can play slow moody acoustic stuff or hard rock/metal riffs. I recommend you give Rooster a try, I think you'll like that one.
AIC with Layne was a pretty even mixture of heaviness and mellowness. But all the time the lyrics were pretty somber. I never took note of it, really. I was listening to the instruments and groove and getting lost in Layne's voice. I still miss him like crazy. RIP Layne
Layne Staley sang a large portion of the soundtrack of my teen years. I was in high school during the grunge era. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots are all as epic today as they were back then. Rip Layne, Chris Cornell

It’s fast, hard and catchy, and if you like this, you’ll also enjoy their other big hits: Would, Rooster, Man in the Box, etc. The lead singer is Layne Staley, and he is amazing. Wait til you hear his power and range on some of their other songs......goosebumps.
Hey Jay, Hittin one of my favorite bands, unique amazing vocals, Killer guitar, Just awesome...R.I.P. Layne & Mike, so missed...Thanks J. Peace
Jerry Cantrell the guitarist was the songwriter for this and a majority of their songs. However during the initial recording of this when they were starting to play, Layne Staley(lead singer) said 'I hear a yell here' and so the startling AHHHH! you hear at the beginning is what Layne came up with.
This is how you open an album, take notes, kids!
Good job syncing the video! I've been rooting for you! Great reaction to a great band!
Man in the Box and Rooster must hear
Ill be sure to give it a listen
Alice In Chains is a great rabbit hole to go down. As others have said, this is called grunge rock. It is, imo, a form of hard rock because of the volume, tempo and reliance on driving 4 beats/bar, guitars and drums as the central structure of the music. But grunge had a different feel than earlier hard rock. It was darker, more pessimistic, a rebellion, in the 90s, against the genres of disco, new wave and glam rock. A sort of ‘back to basics’ movement.
R.I.P Layne. That is his natural voice, sooooo awesome
2:40 This is definitely evidence that you heard this song for a first time :D Anyway great video!
Alice in chains: Rooster. Great song. DO IT!!!!
You need to listen to Stone Temple Pilots. Either Interstate Love Song or Creep! They are two of their best songs. RIP Scott Weiland. Hell of a vocalist !!!
Hail Seattle!! Keep Rock Alive!! 🤘🏽🖤🔥🙌🏼 ℁
There are so many great AIC songs. Rain When I Die
Rotten Apple
Love Hate Love
Rooster
The list goes on!
For other killer AIC check out:
Would
Rain When I Die
Man in a Box
Down in a Hole
Nutshell
and a whole bunch of others...
Perfect fucking reaction to that "AHHHH!!!!"
Alice in chains , live on MTV UNPLUGGED IS A MUST WATCH . YOU WILL SEE AND HEAR THE BEST OF THEM ON THIS .
Use what you have left, and use it well."
The drummer is Sean Kinney.
“Yeah, he was a certain kind of angel,” Martin said, “a dark one perhaps, but an angel all the same.”
Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine said Layne sang like an angry angel.
(Meanwhile, Layne's own biological father was an opportunist)
Jerry met Layne just as his whole world blew up with his grandmother and mother dying within 5 months of each other.
There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."
There definitely is not enough space in a book-long comment to explain Layne's voice and what he was able to do with it, how he stacked his own vocals with harmonies and melodies underneath... how he could come up with those lyrics, harmonies, melodies off the top of his head, and what he could do with his voice live. So, I'll leave you with these quotes...
"My grandmother and mother were such huge losses, but I got Layne, the guys, and I got this.” - Jerry Cantrell, Kerrang! (December 1, 2018)
“Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died).
"Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." -- Layne Staley
"My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title." -- Layne Staley
"When I tried drugs they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell and this sucks. I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn't want my fans to think heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen." -- Layne Staley
"I'm not into religion, but I have a good grasp on my spirituality. I just believe that I'm not the greatest power on this earth. I didn’t create myself, because I would have done a hell of a better job." ~ Layne Staley
With AiC, every album is different. Extremely versatile band with incredible vocals and instrumentation.
One of the best front man voices ever. Man in the box
One of my top 5 favorite bands. Anything from AIC will rock you to your bones
RIP Layne.
Who else watched to see him jump when it starts? Scared the hell outta me first time.
It cracks me up to see all the reactors jump at the beginning of this song 😂
Lane Staley had one of the most unique voices in rock. Add the harmonies of Jerry Cantrel and it’s something special
SIGNED 💋
Akita, 🇺🇸 👵FAN
Alice In Chains one of the four main early 90s grunge bands this song came out in 1992 grunge rock album “Dirt” my favorite album of the grunge era !
First song in Dirt. It set the tone for what's to come, The whole album, track by track.
A deep cut from them that I feel you’d really fw from them is “bleed the freak”
Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and now Layne Staley..... all of our dead rock gods....
RIP
Yes, Layne Staley's voice was an absolute beast.
"Man in the Box" and "Would?" are your next destinations down the rabbit hole.
Everyone jumps...LOL
For more grunge you have to check out Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit), Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Queensryche
I will for sure because I’m definitely digging that style
Glad the video is synced!!! Yay! Gonna throw you in the deep end now a bit...react to Popular Monster by Falling in Reverse....🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I figured out there was a lag when i turned on my screen recording! don't worry getting my new set up this weekend!!
This
Never will find another voice like that. Chris cornell - nothing compares to you (live in studio cover of prince)
This kind of vocal style is actually pretty easy to learn. But you have to do it right and practice for a few months, before you can do it without hurting yourself.
Live performance of Love, Hate, Love is a must.
There album called DIRT is absolutely friggin amazing every song 💯🎸
Alice In Chains is amazing. I do live performance photography- concerts!!) and got to shoot pictures of them.
RIP Layne
Alice in CHAINS instead of Alice in WONDERLAND is the most likely reason of the band name. Love it
Layne Staley sang a large portion of the soundtrack of my teen years. I was in high school during the grunge era. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots are all as epic today as they were back then. Rip Layne, Chris Cornell
You don’t listen to Layne, you feel him. Alice is grunge rock. He was an amazing artist, & person. I was lucky to know him, & I named my son after him 🙌🖤... Alice has an awesome collection, check out Again, No Excuses, I Stay Away, Sludge Factory, Would, so many more! And anything from their Unplugged show, I was so fortunate to be there ☺️
Great reaction 👍. Greatest vocalist ever. I'm subscribing 💪
You should try Down in A Hole, Damn the River, anything off Dust really... can't go wrong. AiC rocks!🤘🏽
Dude! 😳 I have never thought about or realized that. Alice In Chains. Allison Chains. Wtf?! Omg!
Do every Alice In Chains possible. Wonderful talent. Jar of Flies is a beautiful album.
Love it! Do more Alice in Chains please. Great reaction 👍🏼👏🏼🙌🏼✌🏼💜🇨🇦
Rooster and Man in the Box are probably my favorites from Alice in Chains. Talented band from the grunge era. 👍
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden ... some interesting music there!
I wonder how many reaction video creators have had a heart attack when this song starts. I feel like it's gotta be more than zero.
Nutshell, Would are 2 definite listens. Can't think of song titles at the moment but there's one more I really recommend dang I wish I could think of the name
Alice in Chains is a top tier band.. All is good. It's close to "grunge/stoner" music trend. Layne was a GREAT vocalist. You'll be impressed hearing him on many of their tracks...
Love me some alice in chains. This brings me back to my highschool years.
There's also an artist (rock) whose name is "Alice Cooper" (and you should react to his song, "Poison.")
Humor: Combining the two would give us "Alice Cooper In Chains" :=)
I've just joined your channel, checking out your reactions. I saw some Metallica reactions first and it just so happens I checked Alice In Chains second. And Layne was an awesome voice that is truly missed.
Every time I hear this I just picture little me playing ATV Off-road Fury on PS2 as a kid 🥰 great memories with this playing in the background
When that first AHH! made you jump it reminded me of the first time I heard this song. I had to laugh!
That jump at the start, wait until he comes across SOAD...
One of the best grunge rock singers of all time awesome voice listen to rooster an would awesome voice in them songs
I went to the Concert 1992. 🎫 I love it! Layne Staley's voice!! 🤪💯👍🤘👊🙅♀️🙆♀️
Yep yep, that is how you are supposed to feel when this song comes on and hits you
One of the greatest album openers ever on one of the best albums ever from one of the best bands ever.
They were part of the 90’s Seattle Grunge explosion, but to me they are just a great heavy band! They are the only band from the 90’s Grunge era.
Hard core heavy Metal. For the headbangers. They were popular in the 1970's. 😍 5-8-2021
I started watching you after seeing you on your buddy James’ channel, Rome Life, because you said you didn’t like rock music and you don’t listen to it. I kept watching, because I knew once you started listening you would change your mind! I’m loving your journey. You’ve got to build up to watching Rage Against the Machine, though. That rabbit hole is a deep one, literally and figuratively!
I’m waiting.......... lol
"Love,hate,love"...Live at the Moore. Layne voice is a whole other level of 🤯
LOL! This song always makes me think of the Street Fighter 2 animated movie - this song is in it.
