Layne's voice was heartbreakingly amazing. Such a horrid loss to the music world. Tortured soul... addiction is a nasty beast to try and beat. RIPLayne
"Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine called him “an amazingly talented singer” who sang “like an angry angel.” " I think this is the best description of his singing almost super natural
Their “slow” stuff is amazing too! Need to listen to “Nutshell” from Mtv unplugged and “Don’t follow”… Layne was one of the most haunting voices ever. RIP
'dont follow' is my favortie from them, but yes the unplugged version of 'nutshell' and most of the unplugged album is frikin AMAZING. too bad 'dont follow' wasnt in that performance. anouther one to hear from unplugged is 'heaven beside you.'
You need to listen to the uncensored version. He doesn't say "shove my nose in spit". No. Just no. This is a dark song, but so thought provoking and the very epitome of grunge. "Rooster" is a must listen. Layne had a sad and all-too-typical rock-n-roll life. He flamed out fast. Blind Melon is similar "No Rain" is great, and with an equally tragically talented front man Shannon Hoon.
In that era it was almost like I could fall in love with a band or they would lose their lead singer! AIC, Blind Melon, Nirvana, and Sublime just broke my heart! So glad their music lives on.
That’s the late Layne Stalely. Such a huge loss. Love AIC. He sings so good but he reminds me more of the late, great Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, Audio Slave.
That guitar effect is made by a "wah pedal", sometimes called a "wah-wah" after the sound it makes. It's been in use since the Sixties, and Hendrix was famous for using a "Cry Baby" wah pedal. The player controls the sound with his foot.
The entire unplugged live album is a masterpiece but I limit my listening of it as I got older because it’s so powerful it makes me depressed.. it’s beautiful and sad
Agreed, and my favorite album of theirs. It doesn't depresse, because I just soak up the brilliant performance. But, I do understand that response. It's very melancholy.
Layne was a very special singer, you could feel his pain and emotions in his beautiful voice and connect to him, and that tone! i wish he knew how amazing he was, RIP.
Hey guy’s, you have a long, kick ass road ahead of you with AIC!!¡ RIP Layne and RIP Mike Star. Luv the new room guys I’m happy to be a part of your you tube family
Rooster is another fantastic song by them. Back in the grunge years its was all about Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilot, and Pearl Jam.. .give CandleBox and Live a listen as well
The awesome voices of grunge: Layne Staley (AIC), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave), Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver).
100% spot on. The "lower register" sound they pointed out was when my ears heard Weiland coming through. "Interstate Love Song" and many others...- STP I Am The Highway - Audioslave
I think the most forgotten voice of grunge is also the most prolific ...The legendary Mark Lanegan (Solo, Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, Mad Season, Gutter Twins ). Then again he was best friends with Layne, turned Kurt on to blues & david bowie, Chris Cornell produced his first solo album, Partnering with rehab buddy Mike McCready from pearl Jam for Mad Season and being saved from homelessness from Duff McKagan from guns and roses. Mark Lanegan voice is definitely one of the best from the grunge scene
The thing I love about Layne's vocal delivery in this song, is the way he drives home the high notes of the chorus. It has so much clarity, but also emotional conviction in its delivery. On a side note - congrats on the new addition to your family!
Layne and kurt knew each other , layne actually passed 8 years exactly to the day of Kurt's passing. In my opinion they are the founders of the grunge sound and since they both passed the grunge era/ sound died with them. 💔
Ah, it does my heart good to see you guys recognize true vocal talent within hard rock. Too many think it's all about yelling and screaming. Have a nice, long discovery.
Guys you have to do “Down in a Hole” Most people do the live version but either way it’s mine and many peoples favorite Alice In Chains song. When you know Laynes story…. It both impresses and breaks your heart. He was amazing.
Down in a hole! I haven’t been able to figure out how many times you have to listen to it before you hate it like a lot of music but after literally listening to it forever I still can’t get enough!
You have done 2 songs from them and I can not believe that "ROOSTER" wasn't one of them! Ya'll MUST listen to it I think it's one of their best! ROCK ON!! Jeff
The effects on the guitar, and the beginning vocals are done with a "wah pedal". It opens and closes the sound of the instrument or voice using a pedal, so it can be timed exactly how you want it. Definitely a #1 tool for guitar players.
You guys ain't remembering Luca in vitro was listening to some of the best music that ever been recorded you dig what I'm saying. This little cat is going to come out of the womb with a library in his little head and trust me as young as they are small children remember very important things such as music which is very important to an in vitro child. Mama get yourself a set of old school headphones and plays system and just kind of take it to headphones spread apart and put them on your tummy and watch his reaction!
Lead singer is the late Layne Staley, guitar and vocals is Jerry Cantrell. My favorite AIC song. Try Rooster next. Jerry Cantrell wrote it for his father, a Vietnam veteran.
What you're hearing on the guitar is that it's fed through "wah" distortion. It's such a distinct sound (or maybe they're feeding it through a talk-box at points, as well; I've noticed wah and talkbox sound close to each other quite often). Jimi Hendrix is probably the prophet of "wah" in rock, because he showed what you could do with it in a way that spawned millions of imitators.
Nutshell is one of my favourites; Cantrell's solo.....love it. Basically the whole album Jar of Flies is an amazing special work of art and in my all time top 10!
Layne Staley's voice is amazing there will never be another one like him should definitely react to love hate love live at the Moore it is a true example of not just Layne's talent but the talent of the whole band
The guitar technique is actually two techniques put together. Jerry Cantrell is alternating between “palm muting” and open strings while using a Wah Pedal to create the “wah-wah” sound. The result of the Wah Pedal is similar to taking the Bass and Treble knobs on your equalizer from 0 to 10 and back to 0 again really quickly. The short “thumpy” notes are the result of Palm Muting which is where the guitarists strumming hand slightly lays on the strings so the notes play but do not ring out.
I literally used to listen to this song when I was around 9 years old, and I loved it at that age and still love it at the age of 28. Layne Staley got this once lonely Creole girl from Compton CA through a lot of things and I’m so glad I know their music and grew up with it 💕. Hope you do Rooster, because that’s an amazing song as well
There is a great RUclips video where someone played samples of Layne Staley, Scott Wieland, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder without the music. It was incredible!
My neighbors high school buddy Bryan Carlstrom, produced this record. He said they they showed up late, and high, but could play like a mo-fo........so he just loaded the tape and let it run. Just let it run wild.......
The main sound you're hearing on the guitar is a Wah pedal. It's a guitar effect. It also sounds like a Talkbox is synced with it. It's a cool sound for sure. Congrats on the baby!
I’m def late to the party, but I was scrolling to see if anyone hooked em up with the answer. When I play this I use the Wah only, but it’s only cuz paying for a talk box and a mix and all that seems extreme for the few songs I like that use it.
Dude, you can't imagine the fire and energy there was at the beach as this song was blasting out of the speakers of the beach bar at camp pendleton back in 1991!!! I remember that time as a kid. All the marines were turned up when this was on. it was a badass time. RHCP's "suck my kiss" was also freshly out back then... rock music in the early 90s was so raw and innovative back then. You couldn't resist it when you heard it back then.
I live in Seattle. I am 63, but at the beginning of Grunge l worked at a club in Pioneer Square in Seattle. I got to see all of them! After club parties where over the top!
The effect on the guitar is from a "talkbox". The sound of the guitar is fed through a tube that can be manipulated by the mouth, so that the guitar sounds like a voice. It's featured on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" and Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do"...
Love Alice in Chains. About time you did them again! Other good ones are Rooster, Would, Over now, and so many more! RIP Layne Staley! And yes do some more Nirvana- Heart shaped box, all apologies, in bloom or lithium.
Wait till you get a song with the harmonies between Layne and Jerry. My personal opinion is not to listen to "Nutshell" until you have a decent grasp of the band. It is very haunting and more of an ending than a beginning.
Its so nice and refreshing to see people who appreciate rock music's voices. I've encountered a lot of people who call it noise, screaming, grunting, etc...Its so nice to see appreciation.
This song is one of my top five favorites from 1990. I was 20-year-old when this when this song was released in January 1991, and Layne was barely 23 when he recorded this song. How many 23-year-olds have a voice like Layne's? Furthermore, I am stunned that this song is 34-years-old, the same age now as Layne was when he died. Yet, it seems like yesterday when I first heard it. I am just blown away. As commenter stated in another channel about Layne Staley and his vocal ability, to which I completely agree, "the world lost a truly great vocalist when we lost him." RIP Layne Staley, 08/22/1967-04/05/2002.. So young to die at 34. "Man in the Box" is a classic grunge anthem that explores themes of conformity, alienation, and the desire for freedom.
This was the Jam when it came out, I sang along with this sooo soo so many times, I remember holding my own concerts after school before my parents got home, screaming my lungs out to this song and so many others! Layne Staley was one of the masters of vocal fry singing! Would? Is my other favorite from them in this era. My favorite of their current stuff is Check My Brain, that song has a killer grove/vibe, you should check it out!
We die young !!! I was lucky enough to see AIC on their first tour and I remember Layne saying that they made an awesome video for the song and MTV never played it once !
Never get enough of AIC. Layne had the most powerful, well controlled and unique voice I've ever heard. You feel him not just hear him. Love Hate Love from Live at The Moore you have to hear. It's a must. ✌❤🤘
Layne Staley was one of the greatest vocalists in rock history and his harmonies with Jerry Cantrell are legendary.
Those 4th and 5th’s harmonies are what make them sound so haunting.
AGREE!!
And his ability to hit those notes looks like it takes him no effort at all. Chris Cornell is another.
RIP Layne Staley.

I’m def late to the party, but I was scrolling to see if anyone hooked em up with the answer. When I play this I use the Wah only, but it’s only cuz paying for a talk box and a mix and all that seems extreme for the few songs I like that use it.
@@brianpike4677 lol I know the struggle, how many overpriced pedals is too much. In the end I sold most, but it's a path we all walk
@@kylemundy8871 it’s a rabbit hole for sure
If you haven’t done it you have to do Rooster by AIC. Gives me goosebumps. Or if you like the lead singer try River of deceit
Do Rooster next by far their best song. Also their lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell is from Oklahoma too
Agreed the MTV unplugged performance specifically
"Would?". Their best song.
These guys came out and blew people away, just a great sound. Sunshine is also a cool song.
Lane Stanley one of the best voices of the 90's love the studio
The studio is lovely. The walls are great, they show off posters and pictures to their best. Having said that I did love the brick background.
Need to fix the pictures over jays right shoulder, it's driving me crazy.
And they talk way too much...
I see J has 9 guitar minis. Loved the unboxing video when he got his first one. But NINE? I'm super jelly... I only have 3...
"Would" by Alice in Chains. Epic stuff!
Layne another artist who flew to close to the flame. RIP beautiful Layne Staley.
I live in Seattle. I am 63, but at the beginning of Grunge l worked at a club in Pioneer Square in Seattle. I got to see all of them! After club parties where over the top!
I'm loving the new studio!
"Don't Follow" by Alice in Chains is one of the best songs EVER.
I love this song.
I heard they didn’t sing it for unplugged bc Layne couldn’t get thru it… it’s especially haunting now that Layne is gone.
My personal favorite
Finally! One of the most influential bands of that period. When are we going to have the pleasure to see you react to FAITH NO MORE.
She’s not ready for Zombie Eaters!
Best description of Layne Staley's voice I have ever heard; HAUNTING!!!
I've always loved this song for it's intensely raunchy goodness. That riff, the vocal snarl, damn!
Rooster would be my next song on your list. Love your reactions. Congrats on the new little one.
You could literally FEEL the power coming out of Layne's body when he sang. Such an amazing talent gone far too soon. RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr
🖤
Too many gone too soon :(
Love your show. Grew up listening to 90s Grunge. Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain. Three of the greatest voices ever!!
J.....
You're an old metal head ..... transported in time.....
I love watching your realization and the opening of your eyes....
🤘😁👊.....
The great Layne. He had to most incredible vocal range. My fave and such a loss to the music community. Digging your new studio vibe.
Love Alice in Chains. About time you did them again! Other good ones are Rooster, Would, Over now, and so many more! RIP Layne Staley! And yes do some more Nirvana- Heart shaped box, all apologies, in bloom or lithium.
Other good AIC Songs are: I stay away, down in a hole, got me wrong, no excuses, them bones and heaven beside you.
These won't get the votes, but my faves include "We Die Young," "No Excuses," and "It Ain't Like That."
"You feel him not just hear him". 1000% agree, that's Layne in a nutshell (pun very much intended). I miss him every day.
Hugs to both of you and God bless you all and your children!!!
My knee broken by my master"... such a masterful voice..Layne gone too soon RIP 🙏
