Great video! I grew up in AV, always wanted to race BMX as a kid, but never got the chance. Back in 2015, when I was 38, I finally got the guts (and time) to do it. My first race was at Hesperia, and then later I did one race at AV. Since then I was in a bad car accident and haven’t ridden a bike in three years, but now at age 43, I’m trying to start again; I hope to get back on the track in the next few weeks.
Thanks for all your efforts in supporting BMX, for educating others, and for inspiring old guys like me!
Very sorry to hear about your accident, but I'm happy to hear you've recovered enough to get out there again! Perhaps I'll see you at the track someday. Best wishes on getting back into it!
Us 80s kids who grew up in that Freestyle world watching RAD 8 times a day really appreciate that Haro Master. So cool to own a piece of that history. Ron Wilkerson and Dennis McCoy were Gods to me as a kid. Great vid y'all!!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
I don't have a Haro Master anymore. I have my race bike, a Haro Backtrail, and a Mongoose fat bike. But it's cool. I don't really miss my old bikes. I leave those to the collectors.
Bmx racing is highly underrated
Agreed. It should be far more popular.
This was so helpful! I just took my 3 year old son to his first BMX racing practice night and he fell in love with it. So I’m just getting looking into this and you made this so much easier for me to have more insight on the sport. Again he’s young so he’ll be doing a balance bike to get his feet wet! We are all excited to start this adventure as a family!
That is awesome! Thanks so much for your comment. Knowing my efforts are helping folks makes it all worthwhile. Hope your son and your family continue to have fun!
Best videos ever! You got me back into BMX racing! Thank you 🙏
Awesome! Thanks for the comment and welcome back!
Very informative, thanks for posting a great video! My 5yo son wants to start racing next year and I will definitely take these tips on board. 👌
Very cool. Thanks for watching and I hope he has fun!
So cute trying to teach kids to ride online! Love it! I think it’s great you added that because so many kids are late bloomers with riding.
Thank you. I think if people are too big for balance bikes, they may not know the easiest way to learn on a bigger bike. Hopefully this helps them.
Love these videos! Thank you
You're welcome. Thank you for the kind comment. Glad you're enjoying them.
If you live in the Central Valley in Ca (round Fresno) Airtime BMX in Reedley is a great track with really great people. They do an open house day then a 6 week learning league! I am 45 and just started.
Thanks for sharing that. I also have a map on the Learn BMX Racing website showing every track in the country. So, if folks need to find something close to home, just check out the site!
Thank you for the video
You're welcome. Thank you for the comment.
Great advice! Thank u
You're so welcome!
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My closest track is Black Mountain BMX, I'm going to attend one of the clinics tonight and I'm stoked!
That's a great-looking track. I've never ridden it, but it looks pretty sweet. Lots of big races happen there too.
Today was my first day of doin racing bmx and because of that i brought my freestyle bmx to the track and a guy that i had just recently met that day gave me a free racing bmx because he had bought a new one
Wow. That's quite generous! Sounds like you made a friend quickly.
Awesome 👍
Thank you!
Great video, what track is that? looks like a track near me in Apple Valley
Yes, Ashley and I shot that at Apple Valley BMX. I give thanks to the track operator in the end credits.
i thought so too, i’m in victorville 😆
So I’m getting in to bmx RACING because I do park and how does it help me out switching over
I think cross training tends to help in any sport, because it gives you a better sense of control over the equipment. Learning to maneuver the bike in different terrain and conditions only helps your all around skill. Some folks might disagree with me, but I think it's true.
Nice video!
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Great video. How do I get my kids started? They’re 9,7, and 5. I live near Riverside in CA. Do you know where I could get started?
Thanks for watching. The video should tell you everything you need to know to get started, including links to maps so you can find the closest tracks.
*Yucaipa* and *Grand Prix* are 2 good BMX tracks within a 17 mile radius of Riverside.
If you want to travel a little further, you are within a 50 mile radius of 5 additional tracks.
I would like to know if helmets with removable front are permitted in bmx race, like the Cairbull Allcross model. I was attracted by its low cost, I don't care about the removable front feature. Is there a full face helmet with fixed from with similar price?
Full face helmets are the most popular, but they are not a requirement. Any bicycle helmet is permitted.
@@LearnBMXRacing Thank you! Your videos helped me a lot. I started practicing bmx race this year when I was 40 years old, and I'm loving it!
Are you guys allowed on that track with a Chase frame? Being a house of Supercross, I've always been reluctant to make the drive up with my Chase Cruiser.
Apple Valley BMX is owned by Supercross BMX, but you can still race any brand name of bike you want at the track.
Clinic really helps
Definitely. I agree.
We have mongoose l10, is it good to start bmx?
Yes, you can use a Mongoose Legion L10 to start. However, since it's made of cheaper materials like hi-tensile steel and one-piece cranks, I would only allow a child to use it. If an adult jumped that bike too may times, it would likely break. But for a child who is a beginner, it would work just fine!
Anything I should know already being skilled in other forms of cycling? Like etiquette or any rules about following someone and stuff like that.
And can I use a freestyle bmx bike for racing? I do understand that that might hinder stuff if I’m competing.
@@Gehajjs62727 As I mention in the video, go to a track and get a feel for things. You will quickly pick up on the culture and the etiquette simply by being exposed to it.
As for using a freestyle bike, that depends on how your freestyle bike is configured. You can not have pegs installed and you must have a rear brake. But, if your freestyle bike has 25/9 micro gearing or a gyro, that's perfectly fine.
Hope that helps!
@@LearnBMXRacing it does help, I mainly ride trails so I can’t have pegs for that either. Thank you for the help.
Would my 2009 Gt mach one pro qualify? Its got a cassette swap racing brakes 41 to 9 tooth gear ratio and a hb seat well ig the seat dont matter but still would it?
You can ride a 2009 GT Mach One. So long as it's in safe working condition, that should be fine. The main rules are:
• Working rear brake.
• No pegs, reflectors, chainguard or kickstand.
@@LearnBMXRacing ohh ok alright it should be fine then just gotta relubricate my left pedal bearings then itll be good thnx man my uncle said i should get into bmx racing and ive thought about it and honestly dont know
@@thatracinggtbmx6453 Your first day at a BMX track is free. Give it try. Have fun!
@@LearnBMXRacing ok i will i just gotta figure out how to get there thanks so much man
Im 14 and wanna start racing but should i wait until winter is over since im in the northern US area? Or is bmx a year round thing?
There are a few indoor racetracks around the country which race all year, in any weather. Find the tracks nearest you, and see if there might be an indoor one. Good luck!
My young sons and I are having fun learning all this cool BMX stuff! Prayers 🙂❤️🙏✝️👍🏻 Awesome video! Just subscribed to your channel! And love your quote at the end, “Your ‘good old days’ are happening right now”. 🙂 Pray that it blesses us all, in Jesus’ Holy name, Amen! Thanks and God Bless! 🙂❤️🙏✝️👍🏻
Thank you for the kind comment. I appreciate it. God bless you and your kids too.
Me and my grandfather have a kent Ambush but we're modifying it for race
Cool. Have fun!
Great video when is the review on Spreckels Manteca coming?
Spreckles BMX track is over 300 miles away, so I don't think I'll ever ride there. But thanks for enjoying what I have made so far!
Do they have a bmx track in Oshkosh wi
I have no idea. Check out the *Learn BMX Racing* website and look at the map. You should be able to tell from there.
I want to build a BMX racing scene in West Virginia one day.
I wish you all the best in making that happen!
I live in Australia is it a good place to start?
There is definitely BMX racing in Australia. Caroline Buchanan and Sam Willoughby are probably the most famous BMX racers from Australia. Just look up "BMX Australia" and you can find out all about your tracks.
I’m 47 and 6,2” what brand of racing bikes, would be good for me ?
That is an excellent question. I'm working on a script for a video about choosing your first bike, but I haven't shot any of it yet. I will tell you, if you are looking for a complete, here are some of the top brands, in alphabetical order:
Chase
DK
Free Agent
GT
Haro
Meybo
Mongoose
Redline
SE
@@LearnBMXRacing Thank you so much !!!!
I got on a bike at 3 years old and started pedaling straight away
Great. Sounds like you were a bright kid.
yo i do freestyle bmx but wanna do racing will i need a race bike or am i good with my freestyle bike
If you choose to use a freestyle bike, you still need to conform to all the BMX race rules. So:
• Must have a rear brake
• No pegs
• No reflectors
• No chainguard
• No kickstand
As long as your freestyle bike follows those rules, you should be fine.
I have a freestyle bike and I ride on the track alot but I think it slows you down a bit but idm
eh Having a freestyle bike won’t slow you down at all. Having a race bike just allows your body to be in a more optimal race/sprint position.
I was wondering where you went. So you are BMX riding instead of skateboarding now?
I do both.
Learnt to ride a bmx when I was 31 also lol
Better late than never!
Are there many middle-aged men doing this? I just started bicycling again at 47 after not doing it since about 10. I'm doing it for health, but would also like to do some more thrilling stuff. Am I too old and lame yet?
Check out the rest of my channel. I have another video called *"Why start BMX Racing at 48 years old!?"*
Nice jersey how did you get it
I have a lot of experience with graphic design, so I create my own and get them printed. Companies like *Blot Out Grahpics* or *Skidmark Design* are the places I usually get them done.
@@LearnBMXRacing thanks
My closest track is 7 mins from me (Goodyear Bmx)
That's fantastic. Have fun racing there!
I live in Canada and I have a track 10 min from my house
Awesome! Hope you have a ton of fun riding at your local track.
Can you start at any age? I’m nervous and feel like people will judge me for being too old.
I have another video on this channel where I talk about starting at the age of 48. You're never too old to start.
the best advice for this is to go to a track and just talk. ask for help. people love to talk and share, especially in the bmx community.
Everyone is usually nice in the bmx community so don’t be afraid that people are going to judge you 👍
My dad built me a custom bmx I don't no if can enter races but it would ace it
Take it to a track and find out.
Is it OK if I start training at age of 27?
I started at 48. I think you'll be fine.
is that Skyway's Richie Anderson?
The one and only Avalance.
I miss riverside bmx cutting edge bmx coal Canyon bmx orange y bmx orange show bmx. And Temecula BMX. Oh and riverside nbl track
All before my time, but I'm sure they were great fun!
why every usa bmx track have not steep ramps and have no grass?
I think you are talking about supercross tracks. Most tracks in the United States are traditional BMX tracks, not Olympic ones. And there are hundreds of USA tracks with grass. Most of the tracks featured in these videos are in the desert, so you don't see any grass.
I live in australia
That's cool, Hannah!
If you want to race BMX in Australia, you can look up Bicycle Motocross Australia (BMXA). BMXA is the second largest national BMX organization in the world behind the United States, with clubs located in every state.
Thanks for commenting!
2:03 he is definitely new
Looked kind of uncomfortable, didn't it?
well it looks like he’s in clips so probably not too new
By the way nice video
My local bike park the rockstar bikepark
That place looks really amazing. Houston is lucky. I wish every city had a facility like that.
Is it too late to start riding at 15?
No you can start at any age its never too late :)
The only thing you're too old to do at 15 is start your Jedi training. I started racing BMX when I was 48, and this year, I'm ranked 5th in California in my age group.
I’m in Alaska I’m in BMX I live five minutes away
You're very lucky to live so close to the only track in Alaska!
Took me 0.0000000001 nanoseconds to learn how to ride a bike
If someone learns to ride in 5 seconds, or 5 hours, or 5 days, it makes no difference. It's just wonderful they learned to ride.
People who saw this in 2021 that live in RICHMOND Maine know there's a little half dirt jump half pump track
As of May 2021, unfortunately, there are still no USABMX sanctioned tracks in Maine.
Why is the start called a RANDOM start?
Excellent question. It's called a "random start" because after the announcer says "Watch the gate" it takes from 1 to 5 seconds for the gate to drop. That 1 to 5 seconds is always random.
Lmao Kansas only has 3 tracks I'm from Kansas 😂
Well, some states don't have any at all. At least you have three!
Grate vid I think it’s gonna be poop
I would suggest avoiding poop on the BMX track.
