Right out of HS in the mid 70's I got a job working with a small time construction company that had 2 of those old late 50's Cat D8's, same engine/pony motor arrangement. They were pretty cool. Those dozers were the old cable operated blades before hydraulics got popularized.
Really like to see this old machine run. Made in the days of make it last for as long as possible. Something that just does not happen today. Nice machine too. Keep on running this great machine fella too.
That's a great piece of history. I've watched this a dozen times. Being a mechanic and working on many old machines I can appreciate the simplicity and reliability. I'm curious though of the power output of the generator & also fuel consumption. Keep up the good work . Thanks
I haven’t seen a comment about the pony motor exhaust. If like other Cats, and it appears so, the pony motor exhaust goes into a jacket around the intake manifold. This helps warm incoming air for easier starting.
Built back in the days when CAT was 100 per cent USA made. Excellent quality and long life were the story back then. Now, sadly, so many products are made in China and assembled in Mexico. And now quality and durability are not so good on many products.
Al Tinfoil even if it was fully built in the USA it wouldn't matter today even China can build great things but it's the intention. Today most things are focused on it features but they are throw away as the features become obsolete in a few years
A beautiful masterpiece generator,,,,very cleanm, the paint perfect,,,,stainless steel exhaust stack,,,slow engine ,i think 750 rpm,,,no more,,,uff,,he will run a lot of years if has a correct maintenance. Nice Video Wrenchguy.
At 0:55 you have your hand on the throttle. Follow the rod back down to the governor, the locking nut for the yoke is loose. It should be lightly nipped up ! BUT before you do that, take the link rod off and straighten it ! Not only will it look better, it'll affect performance / adjustment !
I would have liked to have seen the exhaust stack on start up, but what a lovely example of Caterpillar power. Speaking of power, what is the KVA rating on the generator , In fact all the specs. would be nice to know. Wonderful engineering here.
see this vid of it completely done, it has a information placard. ruclips.net/video/jaUunkwRP6U/видео.html and this machine i finished last fall. ruclips.net/video/97ek-6gsQt4/видео.html
the pony motor Is gasoline powered I have started one of these 100's of times it was powering a Marian crane that operated for year's 125 hp @ 925rpm and at idle you could have a conversation beside it great old engine
What do you use this GEN set for? just a hobby or do you actually use it for the electricity it generates? either way it’s very cool,,, The idol we hear it running at,,,is that it’s working RPMs or does it have to rev up any for load?
Collector of vintage equipment, saving, refurbing and getting it running. Then sometimes getting it to engine/tractor shows. In that vid its idling which is like 600rpm. For electric it needs 900 rpm, see the grinder vid for it running at 900, it doesn't sound that much diff. That big machine i can't really load it down to get it really barking. Its a heavy toy.
thanks 4 ur comments, maybe u got time to see this video of it completely done with graphics, also shown is a information placard. ruclips.net/video/jaUunkwRP6U/видео.html thanks again.

that's absolutely untrue every cat engine is made to the specifications of the customer I work at the Caterpillar plant in Seguin Tx and make C15's c9's c18 and C 13 and some engine are not painted at all
You are the only person I've seen start those motors properly.
yep, this old 1 I gotta get coolant temp up to 140 for best results. Thats what starting engine is for. thx.
I love the concept of raising oil pressure before starting main engine. Runs sooo sweet
The caterpillar way back then, especially doing it b4 the compression is brought on! Thanks.
That is the best running pony motor I have ever had the pleasure to listen to!
Both engines are running sweet, nice to see them still working.
That sound is simply music to the ears.
What a lovely ol' gal! Good to hear hear her purr.
very well done keep up the good work.
Love it. Was selling the newer versions between 1987 through 1998 to US government.
The first time a seen a diesel engine that had a pony motor built in was a sight that I could not believe,

Sure contact me thru tube with ur number.
That is one very clean 1940 engine, sounds good, like the grey and black colors.
Looks beautiful, runs beautiful.

Very nice unit. Sounds very good.

Zackly right, this 1 just takes a little longer getting to the diesel intake because of the pony engine location. thanks 4 watching.
beautiful unit, sounds lovely!
that is one beautiful genset

More built for use...disposeable, replace...cheaper to buy new, than to repair old one...so stuff is no longer made to last (planned obsolescence)
the engines are still made in Tx
Impressive Sir! Thanks for sharing.
Nice old engine, sounds and looks great.

this engine looks really good in navy colors, it looked good before, but this really dresses it up.
Very nice job, same engine as my D8 lol

the little two cylinder "pony motor" might a fine little boat motor. i ran a couple d13000s years ago, nice old dependable power.
they're getting hard to find in rebuild condition for its intended use. thanks
So what about the generator and exciter? Do they work too?
Belo motor. Nunca tinha visto um assim aqui no brasil.
Wow that's a clean diesel not a leak or drip in sight!
This is truly an engine built the way God intended..
Sounds like an over sized lawn mower. :D Nice engine!
That's the little donkey engine on the side used to start the diesel itself. Quite a common method.
Listen to that ole beauty purr!
Looks and sounds great!
nice short
Put that in my old KW and I'll do some trucking! Come on !!
Had one in a shrimp boat once
Lovely old engine......could have changed the shirt for the video though..
Love it! Now let's put a little load on it!
Nice cat, bad jorts
Just awesome.

Magnifique !! :)
Smooth
what are gping to do with the motor, nice an clean
OK,,,,he uses a small diesel engine to start the main engine,,,,good idea!! Congratulations Wrenchguy.

That engine was used in the D8 dozer and there you could really hear it lugging and barking
Did they install these engines in other things like bulldozers or boats or trucks or anything?
Yes to dozers, boats, sawmills, anywhere a guy wanted a powerunit. not trucks.
We've got one in a Gardner-Denver 600CFM piston air compressor.

Caterpillar Industrial Engines prior to WW2 were usually painted silver grey. After WW2 they became Hi-Way Yellow
that motor acts like it was already warmed up....
The pony motor preheats the main engine for easier startup
Nice work skipper. Another one is for sale cheap on CL
More info with it done with decals.
ruclips.net/video/jaUunkwRP6U/видео.html
they dont make them like that any more
CAT Only Yellow
nope, Caterpillar Industrial Engines ( power units) were usually painted silver grey. After WW2 they became Hi-Way Yellow.
Thank you, Power Engine and alternetor KVA ??
you gotta see the 2016 start up video for the information placard. thanks for watching. heres 2016 video.
