That is one of a kind. I don't imagine there are many guys around that know how to start one of these. That you were able to referb this thing and make it run like that is amazing. Thank you for showing the rest of us.
78 years old, built when things were made to last, you've done a great job, this engine could easily go back to work, many thanks from sunny old England
Very nice engine & restoration job ! Sounds real good. I used to go to the Rock River show when I lived in SE WI. I live too far away now to attend. That used to be a good big show. I enjoyed your other Cat gen set videos as well.
I have driven two eight wheeled Fodens fitted with CAT engines and both were the most reliable things I have ever driven for Power and Performance ,the grunt at low RPM was Unberlievable which is where the power for tipping work is required when on site,in the time I had them I did over 300000 miles in each of them without missing a beat then they were passed on to another driver who then drove them till they were replaced at about 600000 miles, brilliant engines.
Yes by design, when pony is warmed and running good enough the main engine is turned over with its coolant pump providing circulation. The gas engine slowly heats all engine coolant to help with main engine starting. (no glowplugs) This method was standard for all early cat diesel engines. thanks.
i being an auto mechanic.. wonder what the single tapping noise is. . an exhaust leak.. a loose valve adjustment.. a burned valve?? misadjusted fuel injection.. one spraying more than the others. thank you for answering the question.. does he have a crank handle for the pony motor. i had not even ask it. next question.. are there brushes in the generator set and is it getting damaged by not having any load on it.
I love the beer keg fuel tank.
Wow, super cool machine brought back to it's original glory - nicely done - thanks for sharing it with the world.

Beautiful job. I could listen to that cat purr all day long. Caterpillar, Cummins, and Perkins always made great long lasting engines.
That is a neat piece of machinery!

Gorgeous.
It's killing me that we weren't able to make the show this year.
I appreciate the way you treat this old girl by prelubing the engine and getting it warmed up.
That's how you make things last!
She sounds perfect.
Another great video! It's amazing how nice things were made back in the day. Sounds great.
Pulled my first D8 engine when I was 15, they had two heads then, not one !
this 1 has 2 heads also, like about 200lbs. each.
Awesome!! Really impressive work.. Attention to detail makes all the difference.. Sound great as well..
I think this was the year before I heard about the Thresheree - from Ed

Mike, Great job nice attention to details!
Nice job on the paint!!!
Excellent job
The pony motor does not have a muffler does it?
Does the pony motor get coolant from the main engine?

its just the way loose prewar mechanical diesels sound, or the exhaust cracking of the gasoline starting engine running.
Awesome Engine(s)
BEAUTIFULL ENGINE, DIESEL ENGINE IS BEST
