Had to learn that the hard way. When I was starting out I had a Nikon d3100 and I bought a knockoff battery and it was bloated after the first time that I used it
I am working a lot on electronics and I would definitely say that buying an non OEM battery is perfectly fine as long as it is a good quality one. The battery cells are manufactured by a third party anyway and from my experience the OEM part usually uses good medium quality cells. This means although you receive a decent product there is some room for improvement. Since the manufacturers are not transparent about their suppliers you have to know from experience which are better and which are worse.
Thanks for sharing. I've had good luck with my third-party batteries. The only thing is that they don't accurately display the remaining battery life, and usually die faster in the last 30%
@@AnthonyGugliotta There is a very simple explanation to this: The percentage is only determined by the voltage. Different batteries have different voltage curves while discharging. Usually a higher quality battery maintains a higher voltage for longer. Since the energy stored is roughly the same it will be followed by a more rapid decrease in voltage and that is exactly what you are witnessing. The important question is: Are you still able to capture the same amount of pictures?

I have been using a Kingma NP-FW50 for about 9 months now and I can recommend them from my experience. While it does take a longer time to charge, it lasts just as long as the Sony one.
If you get well made third party batteries they are really good. Of course for casual users original batteries are better since you won't run out of battery these days since one fully charged battery last 1000 shots. The third party batteries I bought last 95% as long. Stuttering is due mostly to full buffer when I shoot birds and your cheap memory card can't keep up. Has nothing to do with battery in my years of experience. Love your channel but many of these advice are inaccurate. My advice, save money on the batteries, get the fastest memory card if you're always doing long bursts. One thing you don't want to cheap out on is getting the best possible flash you can. That means the most expensive one made by the brand.
I avoid using third party batteries in my R6, but found good third party batteries for a similar price range ($30-35 CAD) that outperformed my older LP-E6 batteries in many DSLRs. They work fine in my R6 too, but don't last as long as the LP-E6 NH do
Electrical engineer here ,can explain the reason behind that ,the knock off batteries cannot provide enough current to the camera ,it requires a lot of current to flow at a Conti rate to do those continuous burst shots which the cheap batteries struggle with ,why they do ? , Cause they don't have more number of lithium / metal sheet in them or a lower grade electrolyte that cannot just give huge amps stably 👍

I use aftermarket battery for my Fuji XE1 (from Hähnel) and they are more than sufficient. At least they last way longer than the old original battery 😅
Let me add to that: a German channel now called Davision made a video comparing all brands he could find for the LP-E6NH and his result was: A lot of the knockoffs didn’t have an actual temperature resistor (RTD) but only a static resistor. This can get dangerous when charging. Most of the knockoffs had highly inferior internal load balancing, if any at all. The two lithium cells need to be charged and discharged equally otherwise the performance drops off fast. His conclusion also was: buy Canon. Although 3-6x more expensive. It also lasts years without significant drop in capacity. His original battery retained something like 97% of the original capacity after about 1 year while the knockoffs fell below 70%.
Oh this is new to me and for what I use them, I haven‘t experienced a big difference in all these years. Prolly just a me-specific case and related to how I use/take care of them and not representative of the reality much. However… the safety aspect is something I was always worried bc knock off brands tend to cheap out on such measures and I‘m always overlooking the batteries charging. Really keen to watch that channel you mentioned
Same experiance with a sony knock off. it went from 100 to 0 in just 3 mins and the video was shuttering. So now i spend 1.5x times as much for trying to cut a corner. Thankfully it dont destoryed and now i use for as a cell for webcam whn i plugged in.
And sometimes on the flip side, they are generic labeled OEM batteries, the licensed manufacturer sells as their own, at a minimum profit rate. They move a hundred times more of the product than the very same named product, and as such, keep sales down and prices up in the licensed product, and shipping more and more of their generic ones.
I have ravpower batteries for my Sony a7iv and they last just as long as the original Sony battery which costs like £60. Two of the ravpower batteries are £45 with a usb dual charger, absolute no brainer for me been using them for years no issues
Powerextra and Ravpower make good knockoff batteries. I personally use a massive V-mount battery mounted to my camera via rails and it lasts multiple shoot days on one battery.
Low quality 3rd party batteries can even damage your electronics. Haven’t seen this with cameras specifically but in 2016-2018 a large number of low quality 18650 batteries hit the market and would damage devices or even catch fire under standard operation.
The only camera I have that's not digital take film. It's some old camera that lists for 100 dollars that I got for free from the side of the road. Just not sure if it works.
I have 3 legit Sony NP-FW100’s and 2 “fake” ones and it’s a good setup, using the real ones first the the aftermarket ones as a backup but it rarely gets to that point
That's true both for two knock offs for my camera and for two knock offs for my battery powered drill. The drill doesn't spin as fast and my camera can't do burst shots well with those as with the original battery.
I always buy knock off batteries for my cameras, the catch is that I only buy them from Duracell 😄 they cost 2/3 of the price most of the time, sometimes 1/2 the price and the battery life and performance matches the oem battery every time 😄 eBay is a god-send
My fiancé has a 6d mk2 which after a year and a half one of the official canon batteries died. I bought her a replacement kit of off brand batteries which have lasted longer on a charge than the Canon ones and have been going solid for 2 years or so. The only exception I’ll make to this is if I need to replace one of the batteries for my 1Dx Mk2. Ain’t cheating out on that baby xD
Lol. The place I used to work. They have top end board casting Sony and Panasonic cameras with cheap out Chinese batteries. It works out very well. Cheap batteries doesn't last long but they are super cheap and we can have a lot of them.

You can buy 3 knock offs in the price of 1 .. It doesn't sound like bad idea... Of course a photographer would have an official version.. But keeping the others around helps in many situations
I actually had a bad experience with a official canon battery. I got a new official battery and it lasted 10 minutes max compared to a cheaper one I got out of frustration that lasts a few hours. I think I just got a bad batch because I've has many experiences go the other way around
These cheaper batteries basically come with a poor fabrication method which generally has high internal resistance and thus higher current draws cause more losses and they drain rapidly, hence the bad discharge rates. :) Go for oem certified batteries always, they test it for compatibility.
I always buy the Wasabi LPE 6 Batteries never had a Problem. Even if they fail i can just have twice as many for the same prime so its not really a problem
Check out the neewer brand they are really good I got two and haven't had any problems with them but do a bit of research first and see what you think that's what I did
What if the Canon camera is so old there aren't batteries anymore? I have a Canon FT from the mid 79s and no camera shop can find the little weird round one that was used back then. I used that thing for 20 years and loved it. Now I have to use my brain because the light meter won't work without a battery
It's not the discharge rate, it's their stated capacity is bogus. The C rating will affect a camera, but it'll not work at all of it isn't high enough, not run out sooner.
The only downside to my knock off batteries is they last about half as long. My Nikon ones last way longer. I only have 2 knock offs as spares and about 4 Nikon ones.
I find, it's cheaper to buy a cheap, used second hand dslr that comes with lens and canon original batter. Bought a used 80d with 2 canon battery and 3 lens for $130. That's 2 batteries for $130 and 80d and 3 lens extra! 😅
Actually I found a really good brand could neewer I did a bit of research and watching a few things about them I decided to buy myself the double back and I have not been disappointed they are amazing and out last my genuine ones just do a bit of research before you buy cause yes there are some bad batteries out there if you are never sure buy the genuine one to be safe
Literally came down to comment this. I am super careful with battery brands and at the moment only have official batteries or neewer batteries. Only ever had one bad brewery battery and it just expanded on an insanely hot day, all other batteries were fine.
I worked shooting sports for a guy who bought knockoff Nikon batteries from China. They were crap, died quickly, and ruined one of the cameras. You get what you pay for.
Another reason is that you never know what you're truly gonna get, and lower than needed electricity is as bad as higher than needed electricity. Not recommended unless you'd like to reload your camera with the battery
Well i wouldn't go for knock off that have 70 dollar difference but if you find like after market battery that like only 80 bucks id go for the 80 bucks
The battery in my 14 y.o. Canon 50d is still working though it’s lost about 60% of its capacity I’m still able to make up to 50 photos before it dies. The knock off battery has become completely unusable after c couple of years…
If I need 3 30$ batteries to match a 100$ battery that I know is made specifically for that camera at the development stage, of course I'm gonna pay the 10 extra dollars!

Most these companies source their lithium ion batteries from the same manufacturers so paying $70 quid more for a brand isn’t always gonna get you a better battery. Sometimes batches are faulty. Not to mention those cells are fairly inexpensive so your paying for a plastic cover and a label. Those small cells are worth pennies and they should just make their camera take two li-ion cells and buy a stock charger. Less plastic to manufacture and less fleecing the public.
I have to say that there are some knockoff batteries that are really good for the price. I have some from neewer for my sony camera and they cost so much less
I personally use my phone to take photos, mainly because the quality of phone cameras is literally nearly the same as standard system cameras, and you can get a phone with awesome camera way cheaper than same quality system camera and phone has more use than system cameras…
Your sensor is no where near the same size as a camera don't get me wrong phones have their uses but when push comes to shove DSLR and mirrorless cameras will always out do a phone
The problem is knock offs usually have lame ass lithium battery in them. If they make good ones, they will face OEM lawsuits and have to price the battery maybe $100 more. The final thing is that batteries are made expensive and shouldn't cost much to make.
I've never changed a battery on my main camera in my life. I never will. I don't burst shoot either. I also carry a minimum of 10x36 rolls for my main camera. I'm too old to change to digital.
I disagree. I would say memory is the most important one. Bad memory cards will ruin a day. Especially a professionals day. I present a scenario. Context: wedding contract. A. Shoot all day, bad battery blows up, memory intact. B. Shoot all day, memory card fails with no redundancy. I would say depending on the contract and camera price. Scenario B can work out to be a lotttt more expensive. That and there’s plenty of good reliable 3rd party battery companies. Just don’t buy a random one off a sketchy website. Wasabipower, ravpower those 2 are good brands I’d recommend
No you got it wrong the current rating on the cheap battery is fake let’s if it is 10amps (aka 10000 milliamperes) it can usually be around 2-5 amps at best so yeah depending on the brand it fluctuates but all of them never grant the real number
What...they almost without a doubt use the same manufacturer lol. Used plenty of cheap batteries on all sorts of devices and never seen a difference other than price point. Even made my own batteries. Their circuitry is stupid simple.

The Baxxtar LP-E6NH batteries with the Eos R are fantastic! 1400 shots and 28% still in the batteries!🤘🏼

There are high end battery manufacturers who make them. They are in general really good. They also can't afford to be too bad

This looks like two 18650 Cells, there are not that expensive more like 20 Bucks for two, so I'd think they used good cells in the knockoff.

That and there’s plenty of good reliable 3rd party battery companies. Just don’t buy a random one off a sketchy website. Wasabipower, ravpower those 2 are good brands I’d recommend
original isn’t necessary. there are a lot of other companies that make just as good or better batteries as the original. just don’t cheap out.

No you got it wrong the current rating on the cheap battery is fake let’s if it is 10amps (aka 10000 milliamperes) it can usually be around 2-5 amps at best so yeah depending on the brand it fluctuates but all of them never grant the real number
What...they almost without a doubt use the same manufacturer lol. Used plenty of cheap batteries on all sorts of devices and never seen a difference other than price point. Even made my own batteries. Their circuitry is stupid simple.
