Looks like you are going to be my go to guy for using this radio. I just bought my first S6R receiver for a wing build and you have walked me through the setup. I like your style of "training". You explain everything in such a clear and easy to understand way. Thanks for your help with this! 👍😊
Excellent video and very clear thanks. I have a couple of these and when I’m done with the calibration and happy with the setup, I move channel 12 to a momentary switch. That way it becomes a panic switch but without reactivating calibration in flight. 👍
That's a good idea for C12. I actually spent some time tuning Auto Level on my Stik the other day and once I got the elevator offset right I did a few trial runs for some of the guys at the field and they were impressed how well it recovered from any attitude I put the plane in. A momentary switch would be a very good option to use it after calibration. Thanks for sharing your tip with the channel.
Another great video. As we discussed at one point, I did get my hands on an S8R. I was able to update the S8R to the latest firmware (2.1.0) using the TX16S, very cool 👍. One thing to note, and hopefully folks will see this, if you are using 2.x firmware on your SxR receiver, you have to set the protocol in the Multi Module to FrSkyX2 D16. I’m embarrassed to admit how many times I tried to bind using the standard FrSky D16 protocol and just scratched my head wondering if something was wrong with the receiver. Funny how reading up on the different protocols on the Multi Module site can make a dumb person smart. LoL. So yes, it does work with the new 2.x firmware, the caveat being you need to be on a recent version of the Multi Module firmware and you also need to be using FrSky X2. 👍 Hope that helps someone!
Thanks for sharing that detail. Here's the protocol link in case you want to know what @the rc air marshall is referring to: github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md#FRSKYX2---64
I had the issue of non binding using the XJT module , I could not get it to bind. It was only when selecting the internal module to the settings above that it worked. Strange as I had the internal module set to off !
I have had this receiver for quite awhile and could not get it to work. Thanks for this video. It is working and on top of that, I understand it. This should be called S6R/S8R for dummies. Thank you for this. Excellent work.
Ahhh, clarity at last. The Frsky instructions are vague, to say the least, but thanks to John I’ve seen the light and my S8R works properly. Thanks again.
Just started getting into Open Tx with the TX16S and your videos have been a great help in getting things sorted, without your videos I would be still scratching my head on how to. Really great content, cheers LA
Awesome. I’m glad they’ve helped you get started. Just take it a step at a time and watch lots of RUclips videos. You’ll pick up all sorts of techniques for getting this radio to do what you need it to do.
This is the best video on how to set up the SxR receivers I have viewed so far, and thank you for taking the time of creating this simple, step-by-step instruction. I have just successfully programmed my radio finally. Thank you,, Thank you. Alex, Thornhill, Ontario, Canada
Ive just purchased a TX16 Mk2 and a S6R and this video has been priceless. Ill bookmark this one for sure. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Awesome, helped me setup my first SXR. Moving over all my planes to these, have spent too much money to not take advantage of tech like this. If ppl want to call using stab or level mode to fly better cheating I hope the next time they are flying in an airliner the pilot turns off EFCS, SCFCS autopilot and autothrottles.
I just discovered your channel, wow!!! I've subscribed. I bought a S8R 2 years ago and had to put it away. I read all the info I could find and watched all the videos. I could not understand how to setup the receiver. After viewing this video, I'm going to give it another try and I expect I will finally get it working. Great video with everything clearly explained and shown. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
This is why I come here, thorough answers to seeming complicated topics. I think this will go in my next plane just because I've been Frsky curious for a while.
Thanks for this clear tutorial. I'm now ready for flight test of my first stabilised S6R receiver. After the final calibration sequence using channel 12, I set the weight of channel 12 to zero, just in case I need to redo it - it'll be quick and easy to set it back to 100%.
Setting up my first S6R now. And this vid is equally as brilliant as all your other openTX vids. You have really helped me out a lot.👍 Heading over to Patreon...✌️
I watched this video once and decided to buy a couple of these rx's. Then I tried to remember what I watched to set one up. I had to come watch while setting one up to finally remember. Now I am good. Nice video's
OH. And you have a good style of going step by step in your videos and that is why I look for yours when I need to learn something about this radio and now this rx.
I found out that if the radio send out a different channel order than AETR, this won't work. I was coming from Spektrum and was using TAER. So I had to move everything around in the radio and on the rx. It works great now.
In OpenTx you can assign any input to any output. If you want TAER all you have to do is put your Throttle Input on Mix 1, Aileron on Mix 2, and so on. OpenTX doesn't care about channel names. You can map anything to anything. On the system setup page, you can specify the default order for new models, but that only takes effect when you click "create new model". The radio will then use the default order. They can still be moved afterwards. Oh, and if you use Spektrum RXs you may have to tell the radio to ignore channel map in the model setup.
Thank you very much for your reviews, but I ran into the problem of setting channel 11 on the FrSky S6R receiver, how I can’t adjust the flight on the knife, and hover on the screw, if it’s not difficult for you to make a video on setting up channel 11. Thanks.
THANK YOU John I have had these receivers for two years and and have used them mostly as a normal receiver because I couldnt figure them out . As of today I will never challenge you again from the length of this video I know you put some serious time into it Ill get a hold of you on your Email and get your address so I can send you something to test fly and keep And your the first guy I have watched about servo configuration is where I couldnt get it to work and high rates and low rates on Calibration I had low rates on Again John thank you so much I really Appreciate It Take Care My Friend
Thanks for the comments as always Robert. I'm very glad this content helped. You're definitely right, this video took me to the woodshed more than once. But it's done now and it's one I've really wanted to do for a very long time. I hope it helps you get your SxR receivers configured perfectly because they really are very very good at what they do once you figure out how to set them up properly. Take care, J
wholesome comments like the op, where strangers take the time to thank other strangers for taking the time to make these videos that help...well, strangers, its just very pleasant and refreshing these days. its almost like were not strangers lol keep it up boys!
WOW! This is EVERYTHING I needed to know... and then some. Great teaching method, informative without being onerous. Time to apply the learnings. Thank you!
Great video as per usual, you go into all the nitty gritty of the subject brilliantly. And I also enjoyed the end where you show some of your stuff ups while making the video, shows that you care about getting it right.
Was looking to upgrade my Horus X12s to the Radiomaster and found your video. Answered a lot of questions regarding SxR setup that I could not find through FrSky. Thanks for your efforts...........Subed :-)
Just wanted to say thank you so much for doing this videos your tutorials are on of the best out there! You have helped me so much. Yes it did subscribed. Thanks again, Robert
As someone new the TX16S, one trippy step is Frequency Fine Tuning. Could you please throw together a video explaining the how’s and why’s? And is it necessary for each Rx and protocol (I use both ACCST and DSMX)?
Great video on setting up S*R recievers As mentioned but many will miss its very important to do final calibration at end with ch12 switch servo dance, stick throws etc
The receiver must have both gyros and accelerometers in the circuit board. When you are on rate mode only the gyros are correcting. When you are in auto level mode both gyros and accelerometers are working. That's why you see what you saw when you played with the gains between the two modes.
Hey man, I have one question: After you level your plane and do your final calibration (I use SB), can I change to the momentary SH for the "panic" switch? Also, I have to say that your videos are pretty much all I need to watch if I want to do something with this radio. I was at the field and I showed some guys (and lady) how I use my momentary switch T5 down for auto trim & T5 up for my timer reset and T6 for my throttle cut which leaves me more switches to do whatever I want. One buddy just bought the IX20 and went and bought the RadioMaster due to the useability (He sold his IX20). I just want to say big thank you for your time and effort!! Like Graywoulf, you are certainly my go to when it comes to this radio and ike many others (I'm sure) I could go on and on with all your videos I have watched and the things you have tought me to use with this radio.
This seemed so clear and straightforward until I tried to follow it with an SR8 Plus and my TX16S running v2.9.2. Right off the batt the receiver blinks red after plugging in power. It is not bound to the radio (in multi internal with external ELRS off) as no control over a connected servo exists nor will it bind (radio only provides for Frsky D, not D16, and the RF protocol only allows a D8 (or clone whatever that means in this context). Receiver set to 1 (my first attempt to bind something). Holding down an unmarked black pad (which feels like a switch) and then powering the receiver up results in a slower red blink for maybe a second, then a slightly faster red blink. At no time is there a green blink. At times upon movement there is a yellow flash which reverts back to solid red. What myriad of things am I doing wrong? Thanks
I have the SR10PRO receiver. It will not enter the "calibration" mode. Setup as per your instructions. All mixes were setup without issue. But receiver will not enter "calibration" mode.
Your tutorials are so concise. Without them I would be lost on this radio! I'm wondering if you might do a video on how to assign Auto level and stabilization to aileron 2 (ch5). It only effects my aileron channel, elevator and rudder. That is a mystery to me, as is assigning the auto level and stabilization gain to S1. 👍
In the SxR LUA can you can specify what the 5/6/7/8 channels do--including if they are ailerons/elevators which will include them in gyro outputs. Appreciate the comment.
Hi awesome vid but im having a little issue, i have bound the radio and reciever which are working fine all functions working as should, ail, rud, ele, flaps and gear. But when i go onto settings it doesnt show a reading on the calibration setting just 0.00
Thanks for all the information. I got a Archer plus SR6 mini which I want to use with my Radiomaster TX16S. I managed to bind the receiver in ACCST D16 mode (needed to upgrade to latest firmware). But the calibration failed to work. On the sensors page, I can see, that the signals are moving. But the lua script is not connecting. Is there any workaround? Do you have experience with the Archer plus series in ACCST mode?
Hi, thanks for the video! The best video on the subject so far. However, I discovered a strange phenomenon. If the gyro is deactivated via the 3 pos switch, the auto mode is still half active. I disabled my gyro but my plane would not fly inverted, the gyro kept trying to use the ailerons to bring the plane back to normal flight attitude. It took me a long time to find out what caused it. I have to set the AUTOLEVEL gain value to 0% in the gyro menu in the LUA script. This is the only way to fix the problem. The second strange phenomenon is that I have to manually calibrate the gyro before every start as soon as the lipo is plugged in, otherwise it cannot be deactivated via the 3 Pos switch and would be on permanently. Somehow I haven't been able to get along with this S8R gyroscope for 2 years. I discover new problems every time.
You need to make sure you don't have a switch on Ch12. i.e. When you turn the gyro OFF, it should NEVER influence the model. You're missing something. If you set the gain value to 0% for autolevel, you're basically changing the rate of return to level to zero and that's not good.
@@RCVideoReviews Thank you for your fast reaction. But in your video you say the ch12 is a 3 pos switch for calibration. You say nothing about the fact that I have to delete it again after the first calibration. Or am I not paying attention properly? I don't want the auto level feature at all. I just need GYRO AUS and attenuation.
@@derstanni You don't "have" to delete it. The problem is with that switch on, FrSky saw fit to invoke attitude hold mode. So while your primary switch may show the stabilizer is off, if Ch12 is on, the attitude hold mode will also be on. I try to cover as many scenarios as possible. Bottom line: If you turn off attitude hold, it doesn't hold attitude, it will simply react to un-commanded movement then return to neutral. If yours isn't working that way, you've missed something.
Auto-level can be very difficult to control once engaged. Id encourage the use of auto-level on an intermittent switch while using Gyro mode on fixed position switch...
Pretty subjective statement. I've flown planes like my Dart on autolevel for 45 straight minutes. It may be difficult for you to control, but that is a personal issue, not global.
Many thanks for your great videos. I set up the control surfaces as you suggest before configuration so they work in the correct sense for the aircraft. On selecting a gyro mode I noticed that the gyro commanded the relevant surface in the wrong direction. I used the LUA script page 2 and inverted the appropriate surface and it inverted the control surface direction! This was solved by me returning to the normal selection and reversing all the servos for the affected controls . I was not expecting that. Have I missed something?
1) Put it in manual mode--no intervention from the stabilizer. Use outputs to ensure all surfaces move the correct way. 2) Put it in attitude hold (stabilize) mode. Use LUA script as necessary to reverse servos until they all move the correct way.
@@RCVideoReviews sorry I didn’t explain myself well. I followed all the steps above and all control surfaces worked correctly in manual and stabilised mode. The only error was that in stability mode the response to wind gust was in the opposite direction. To get a correct response then reversed the servo direction using the LÚA script but then all inputs in manual mode were reversed also. Very strange and now sorted as I just inverted the inputs to match the working stability mode. Many thanks
Very nice explanation of the S6R reciver, exelent video,my question is if u switch the gyro off in the tools menu do u have to switch it off every time you fly that plane or does it stay off until you turn it back on.thanks for your help
What would u suggest to do to prevent the gain knob from accidently being used? How can I save the gain position so I remember where it flies the best? Also, I was going to use the left slider for gain but on edgetx 2.8.0 LS is no longer an option under special function, or is it there but I can't see it?
Subscribed, this was awesome. I was considering the S6R for my first fixed wing receiver but wasn't sure I could set it up with my TX16 MKII. I love how thorough you are with explaining. Do you have a version of this for EdgeTX?
@@RCVideoReviews Awesome, thank you. One more question - I've seen some people say the SxR's newer firmware makes it incompatible with the TX16. Did you have to downgrade your receiver's firmware?
What a fantastic tutorial 👌 I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into helping other's, keep them coming thank 😊 you😀 so much absolutely brilliant.
My S8R refuses to go into step #5 - Self check. I have tried activating channel 12 with the mode switch in each of the three positions. I've moved the channel 12 SA switch at many speeds including as fast as I can flip it, 3x 5x 7x etc to no effect. Can't get a blue LED no matter what. I have a new RadioMaster TX16s Max set up EXACTLY as shown in your tutorial. I have TWO S8R receivers that I got a year ago (and then gave up on them when I couldn't make them work with my older Taranis X9d plus radio. The TX16s has been upgraded to the latest version of Open TX and the multi-module has been upgraded also. The receivers were previously upgraded to newer firmware, but they would NOT bind after firmware upgrade. I found a thread on the R/C forums that said this was due to the upgraded firmware. I reinstalled the OLD firmware on the S8Rs and they bound instantly. I tried upgrading the S8R firmware again, to see if it would work with the TX16s: same result, it would NOT bind. Reinstalled the old firmware and instant binding. The S8R is working okay in off mode; its working okay in wind fighting mode, but the ailerons are holding a turn and there is some up elevator when I put it in self level mode. The same thing happens when channel 12 switch SA is in the bottom position. I think these things would be corrected by a successful step 5 receiver check/calibration. So CLOSE..... but no cigar. One other little thing (or maybe not so little????). When I finished the receiver calibration (flipping it around until I got a yellow LED in each position) it said calibration was successful and hit RTN. I pressed the RTN button to no effect. I tried repeatedly. The only way I could exit was powering down the radio. I tried again, going through the 6 orientations until it said the process was successful. Prompted to hit RTN again. Couldn't exit with the RTN button. Had to power off. I'm wondering if this means that the first calibration was never fully completed? In you video there was a jump cut at the point.... I did NOT see you successfully exit with the RTN button. Is there a work around for this? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Brian Kuehn.
Did you move Channel 12 through the 0 position? You used a 3 position switch right? That's one thing I've never had a problem with completing on the SxR is the Rx self check. Look at your Channel Monitor on the Radio and make sure you see Ch12 going from 100 to 0 to -100 and back when you move that switch. The LUA script can be a little flakey sometimes on getting out of the calibration. I'm not sure what to say other than press RTN and the calibration should be saved.
@@RCVideoReviews I did use a 3 position switch ... the SA switch; I did check the monitor and it was moving through the 0 position. I assigned a different switch to see if it would change the result (SB) and no difference. I re-read the FRSKY instructions that came with it to see if I missed anything. Page 3 of the manual says: Automatic level: When selected, SxR will make the model return to level flight with internal three-axis accelerometer and three-axisgyroscope on AIL and ELE channels after the sticks being released to neutral. Automatic RUD channel works in stabilization mode only. I mention this as you seemed puzzled that the rudder was not corrected in Auto level mode. After literally 12 hours of fighting these receivers with my Taranis X9D plus, I bought a couple hobby eagle A3 pro stabilizers. These work perfectly and have a much wider array of modes available. They work really well but add another component and more cables. I could NOT get the RTN button to exit the calibration. I'll try it again. Thanks for getting back to me.
BOTH problems solved. I mentioned that I upgraded to the latest version of OpenTX and also updated the Multi-module firmware. Included with these was an update to the contents of the SD card. When I went to calibrate the S8R receiver I used the SxR_Calibrate.lua file. The updates had ALSO installed a different filed named SxR_Calibrate.luac. I backtracked and tried using the LUAC file instead of the LUA file and the RTN button worked to exit the 6 axis calibration and the channel twelve 3x switch flip activated the blue light and RX calibration. All modes are now working perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to create and post the video.
Excellent!! I am about to buy some receivers. I need something with a stabilizer. Do you recommend buying the new Archer Frsky generation? or good old SxR receivers? My radio is TX16S.
Hi, great tutorials. I’m currently using the x9d on an excavator. The TX16s display does look more intuitive, I will try to see if you have done a comparison video as wondered what extra benefits I could gain by updating.
Thanks, that's very helpful. Once the calibration is done could the ch12 b changed to a momentary switch (button) and be used as the panic mode to flip the plane right way up? I have an additional momentary button on the back of my tx16s which I'm thinking of using as my panic button.
Great video, I am guessing that all of this applies to the Radiomaster t16 max edition as well. The question I have is, have you got full Telemetry on this, and would you think that this radio will receive the Amps telemetry coming from a FRSky Neuron ESC via the Sxr. Thanks in advance and for puttting up these very informative videos.
You're welcome. If OpenTx can receive the telemetry data you'll be able to see it on this radio. All of these tutorials apply to all of the OpenTx full screen radios and even Taranis--although a few menu items have been moved around.
Hi, thanks for the vids….they’re a great help! I have a new tx16s max, I’m setting it up with the help of your videos, I’v just bound a S8R to it, the servos all operate fine, but I don’t have the S8R calibrate option on the (Systems)-(SD Card) section(4min into vid), any suggestions, much appreciated. Thanks
Hi John, I studied sveral of your excellent videos and learned a lot of it. An issue I was not yet able to solve concerns my S6R/S8R receivers. I use edgetx 2.7 and the receivers have the level 2.3 for the FrSky firmware. Binding is fine (FrSky X2 with LBT(EU) because my location is Germany). I selected 8ch with telemetry. The normal functions are working, I could also calibrate and configure the receivers following your hints. But I'm not able to put them to the self check function (blue LED) via switch SA on ch12, for which I also checked the output. And the stabi mode switch (ch10 on SE in my TX16S) does not do anything what is described in your video "Radiomaster TX16s and FrSky S6R / S8R Setup Guide [Quick Mode]" I would highly appreciate your advice. Regards, Wolfram
If you have a bind and control over the channels on the radio, there has to be something missing in your radio configuration or in the LUA. I would do some basic testing like ensuring my switch movement showed as an output on the channel monitor. I would verify SXR functions enabled in the LUA script. I would probably create a brand new model and do nothing except add the self-check and mode switches and check again. I've used this template quite a bit and I know it works.
Got mine earlier today. Frysky could learn something from these guys. Very easy setting up. As for Sub trims, could not be easier. Dial in your sticks with trim go in to sub trim copy trims to sub trims. an your done. Trims back to 0 with sub trims set to how you like your flying thing trimmed . Great Radio what i will be adding external Crossfire to get max range
@@droningon825 Internal Crossfire? As far as I know the only internal non-2.4ghz option on either of these radios is FrSky R9. Am I misunderstanding your question?
@@RCVideoReviews Hi John, No, I haven't been flying for about 5 years since my dad's health started going downhill. He passed away in May at 94 and have been having difficulty making ends meet without his SS income. If I can't secure a reverse mortgage, will have to sell the home I've been living in for 65 years. He had a line of credit that we have been paying down, but it's now left to me to pay off.
OK I understand that weights can all be reset after calibration. How about trimming? will trimming using the normal manual adjustment and mixing for say flaperons be OK?
I don't understand this question: "will trimming using the normal manual adjustment" Mixing is not impacted by the self-check. The self-check tells the radio about level and range of motion for the sticks. I believe it incorporates trims but haven't tested that one.
Thanks for the help with my S6R. You kind of lost me in the gains section though. I will be using the S6R on a delta wing with only elevons so I guess I should leave the gains as they are.
What's the question on gains? Gains just go to how far and how fast the stabilizer changes the surfaces. It seems in Attitude mode the gains specify speed of reaction where in stabilize mode they specify distance of reaction. The simple thing to do is to put gain on a knob and use the knob to tune while flying. If the plane oscillates, reduce the gain. If it doesn't respond enough, increase the gain.
Thanks for clarifying the difference between Attitude mode and Stabilize mode. I set everything up as you directed and did the initial calibration as it is not secured to the AC yet. It all is working as I can tell but now the elevon mix I had worked out is all out of whack and I am still trying to figure out how to fix that. When I get that worked out, it's time to fly.
@@graywoulf You don't set mixes on the radio if you're using an SxR, you set the mix type on the SxR configuration and the RX handles the mixing for you. Put Aileron on Ch1 and Elevator on Ch2 in your radio and set the plane type to wing in the SxR setup.
I thought that was part of your tutorial here in going into the radio's settings and the FrSky SxR settings and designating the wing type and mounting orientation. I guess that this is going to require the use of the S.Port Tool Kit (STK) and app then?
@graywoulf Nope, you can setup the receiver entirely via Lua. I'm just saying with the S6R you don't use mixing in the radio. Just tell the SxR you're using a wing.
Thank you for the great post, very informative. One question - do you know if you can receive telemetry data from the gyro and data log it? I am interested in replacing a X8R with a S8R for gyro "black box" recording purposes without using the stabilization characteristics.
There is no telemetry info from the gyro on an SxR that I'm aware of. Certain flight computers like Matek do provide this telemetry though and in those cases you can see it and log it on the radio. See this video for more info: ruclips.net/video/K8KZqkd29rg/видео.html
Thanks. How do I get the LUA scripts that I need for the SXR rx? I have EdgeTX 2.8 on my tx but I cannot see the required LUA scripts. I looked on Frsky's website and found the LUA script but that is for Opentx and not EdgeTX.
Hello John, I'm new to OpenTX, I purchesed a TX16S and a S6R receiver. I was trying to follow your step by step, but my radio doesn't show the calobration mode in the lua script. My radio uses version 2.3.11-otx. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Before I set up S2 to control the stabilization gain, I had it set up in the radio's global functions as a radio speaker volume control. Even with the model settings, S2 still only controls the volume. Do I need to delete the volume control setting to get the gain to work properly?
have you flown this receiver in larger air planes like 1.20 size nitro with this radio as well? pretty new to the radio master unit and just trying to get some feedback when it comes to this unit
Thanks to all your tutorial videos on the T16S. Really helps a lot. My Radiomaster T16S won't bind with frsky xm plus receiver. I have red & green solid lights on the receiver. I hit bind on the the radio and lights stay solid red & green. Any idea why it's not binding?
I don't have an XM+ to test with, so I'm spitballing: 1) I found an instruction manual from FrSky that says exactly this: "Compatibility: TX with ACCESS v1.1.2" 2) I found an online instruction guide from FrSky that says, "Compatible with D16 mode" This is one of the big problems with FrSky products: Clarity of instructions. I would tell you in the first case, your TX16s won't work with an XM+. I would tell you in the second case to make sure your protocol is FrSky D16. I would also suggest trying FrSkyV2 D16. Let me know what happens when you try both FrSky protocols in D16 mode.
@@RCVideoReviews Got it to bind. I updated XM+ firmware to XM+_ACCST_2.1.0_RSSI16__FCC.frk. Bind it on the T16S FrskyX2 D16. It was going in fail safe, alternating red and green light everytime after bound. Had to do a RF Freg. fine tune. I ended up with a value of -1. Thank you for the help. 👍
Hi John, I have setup my S8R and works great. Picked up an SR8 Pro and can’t get past the registration part with my TX16s. Saw video with ETHOS but does me no good. Have you had any experience with SR8 PRO and EdgeTX? Jim
I keep on ending on your vids again ;-) Almost seen the all, thanks for the info! I do have a question about the S6R and TX16s. If i test the servo on a servo tester its goes way further than on the TX16s - S6R. I ticked of extended limits in the "model setup" and on the output i set it on 125-150%, but no luck no more throw whatever i do. Any idea what this can be? I just want more throw for my flaps and crow braking. I noticed you have different versions of the S6R.. ordered two new. The V2 does come with some funny issues. From out of the box it does only do throttle nothing else. Figured out you have set the calibrate on CH12, flip the switch 3x.. and it recognizes all servo's again. Sometimes the rudder was shut off (?) even after everything is saddle.. A new calibrate and it works again, bit buggy though. I do got the newest firmware.
Hard to answer this. The servo tester could be overdriving your servo. With OpenTx firmware 2.3.10+ you have ppmus values for a given channel shown on the output screen. What I would do is look at the output screen and pay attention to that value as I moved the servo. You should go from 998us to 2012us. As long as the servo moves with your stick from 998us all the way to 2012us and your weights = 100% on output, your servo is going as far as it is designed to go. Also, make sure you aren't using dual rates when you calibrate. Make 100% sure your inputs, mix, and output all have 100% weight BEFORE you calibrate. If you use anything less, you will not see full movement when you operate the sticks.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for the reply! Due to your comment I found a little rabbit of 20% on the input on the ailerons. After calibration.. it got up a bit! It indeed goes from 998us to 2012us.Thx again! Perhaps other servo's would be a solution for more throw? Your secret servo's the Emax ES08ma;-)
Great video, thanks for the entire process! I started out with a S6R out-of-the-box and this receiver will not bind. I think it needs a firmware flash first to work with my Tx16s. Did you flash your latest firmware on the receiver before this video?
Found the bind problem... I'm in Europe and the S6R is then EU-LBT which is a different protocol setting from what you are using in the USA - actually frsky puts a sticker on the box saying eu-lbt. I saw your screenshot saying D16 but that varies for international viewers. That's all.
Got it. Glad you figured it out. I figured non-US folks would know about the FrSky nuances and honestly, I'm not versed in EU-LBT protocols enough to be a source of information.
Hi Can you help on bindig please. I have a Frsky S8R receiver and cannot bind using EdgeTx. I have bound using Open TX both on the same Radiomaster tx16s. When I power up the receiver pressing the f/s button i dont get a green light, I get solid green and solid red light. Nothing I do seems to get the receiver bound?
Hi new subscriber, would you consider doing a setup video with a Spektrum receiver or craft? I would like to know how to add flaps and a switch for the as3x technology... I own the valiant from e-flite.... thanks 😊
I’m definitely going to add a Spektrum Rx soon. In fact I already ordered a DSM Rx from Lemon but they can’t commit to a ship date due to C19 so I canceled the order. Definitely on my radar to add a Spektrum Rx video. Welcome to the channel! Edit: I just looked over the Spektrum Rx lineup--not very motivating to see their prices compared to other options on the market. Their AR636B is a 3axis stabilizer for $75. I don't think so. I'll be looking at DSM alternatives. I'm not going to subsidize that kind of pricing. The S6R is $30 and has 6axis stabilization.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks, yes I absolutely agree in fact I too ordered a lemonrx with stabilizer plus from this site www.buddyrc.com/search?q=Lemonrx+&type=product, as the official site wasn't promising shipping anytime soon. The item was received in good order I am now looking for how-to's for my radiomaster... thanks for the response
Your video about Open TX ,Radio Master TXs and RC items are very helpful. hank you very much. I have a problem with my S8R receiver. The throttle of channel 3 works correctly. However, all the other channel are fixed near neutral (5-7channel are exactly 1500ms) Then, nothing can be done after that. Do you have any solution ?
Set rates to 100%. Perform level calibration by having channel 12 pass through 0 3 times in 5 seconds. Wait for servo dance, then move your sticks to full deflection immediately after servo dance is over.
@@RCVideoReviews Hello Thank you. I 'm not very familiar with open TX mixer. Could you tell me more details of how to use channel 12. Unfortunately I can not understand [ channel 12 pass through 0 3 times in 5 seconds] because of my ignorance.
How do you set up all these little toy quads you get that come with their own controller? I have no idea what chips i in them or what protocol they use or anything. No RC channel ever does anything about how to use a multiprotocol transmitter with all these old RC toys with their propreitary controllers. Stuff from back in the Radioshack days even. I'd like to be able to just use my Radiomaster to control them all. So how do you find out what toy quad uses what proptocol and then set it up? Bardwell won't even touch it, I've done asked.
You're going to have to visit this page: github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md Look for the manufacturer, click on it and read the description and protocols supported. I think the problem is going to be binding. Every manufacturer has a different bind procedure so once you verify a protocol is supported, you're probably in for some quality Google time. Model manuals may provide some insight as to how to enter bind mode on the individual device.
Hi nice video thanks you! I have a problem, under special functions and Global function I lost all of my system settings. So if I want to put a motor cut off switch before is would come up as override but now I don't have that command and can't cut off the motor. can you tell me how to get these commands back? James
Wonder, I bought a second s6r. Binded it with a different receiver no (62) do I still have to calibrate? Isn't the new one overwriting my first s6r receiver no 63?
@@RCVideoReviews I guess what i meant to ask is can stabalization mode make the plane react slower to inputs on take off? Or if you are maidening an airplane for the first time as a new flyer and havent trimmed the plane yet but neutralized all the control surfaces, should you count on stabalization mode to make first flights easier?
When you done the calibration complete, it ask you to "press return on ready".. but then it goes back into calibration again. How did you manage to get out..? In your screen 5.50minutes you are starting with a new chapter. Did you disconnect the receiver first and reboot your tx?
Am sending you this as it was sent to me by Allishanmao ---- Its the best radio for Volantex planes LOL. Just setup a new model as plane. make sure its set as AETR (Aileron, Elevator, Throttle, Rudder) then go to multi protocol.and select V971 protocol. Setup a new switch on channel 5 in mixes. and use a 3 position switch. this will change from beginner, intermediate to expert mode (Gyro on and off) thats it. you do not need that dreaded one click return and one click aerobatics switches. forget them. Turn on the plane, turn on the radio and you will be bound to plane automatically. now check if your Channels are working in right order. remove the prop before testing this. if everything is right, go fly. Hope this gets to you ok best regards. Alan
Is there a way of using the ch 9 gain function on a trim switch such as the T5 so you do not have to remember where you left the knob for the gain? I tried it by changing ch 9 to T5 but the trims did not do anything.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks but I tried what you suggested but it didn't work. It worked with all the other switches and knobs but not with the trim switches. There may be bug on v2.10.1.
It comes with the stock sd card contents. Nothing gets auto installed on opentx radios outside of what is included on the sd card contents from the developers.
Awesome video! (as usual) John. Thanks for the quality of the material and delivery! (We need to support your efforts via Patreon). So I have a question: I am trying to set up an S8R Rx and I am having trouble getting the "System" option (04 - Frsky SxR) to work for me. I can get to it and see the 1/2 and 2/2 pages. One page 1, I see Wing Type line and the '---' to the right, but I hit Enter and nothing happens, same thing happens for "Mounting type". If I go to page 2, the same thing happens I hit Enter and nothing happens. Any suggestions? BTW one thing you could perhaps add is how to update SxR receivers with the latest firmware (via PC or TX). I would definitely like to learn that from you! THX
It's really easy to swamp these Rxs. If you see the screen and can move to page 2, you're probably RF swamping the Rx if it stops working. I can probably do a firmware upgrade video...I'll see what I can come up with.
1) Make sure you have a non-ACCESS firmware on the radio. 2) Make sure if you have a 1.x firmware, use FrSky Protocol on the MPM 3) If you have a 2.x firmware, use FrSkyX2 on the MPM. 4) In both cases use D16
Thank you for the video, I ordered S6R because of it, the gyro will save newbie like me :) I understand that RX also need to update firmware and TX16S able to do it? I can only find some old contents on internet (other model TX) and kinda confuse especially the wiring. Appreciate if you can make explain briefly, or make a video on that. Thanks in advance.
been looking at this vid for the 3rd time... bought 3x a s6r;-) Still why the calibration on switch SA? If you have calibrated once is there reason you want to calibrate again? Isnt it just way more save to just delete the entire option on SA? Means you can be in trouble?
Noticed the variables on your Outputs are -100 to 100, my radio defaults to -512 to 512 when setting up a model. How do I change this to a default value of -100 to 100?
Hi John, went to a swab meet today and purchased an S8R receiver still in packaging. Does your video work for EdgeTX as well as I am thinking of replacing one of my Spektrum receivers. Jim
Just for anyone who is having trouble binding there S6R... This was driving me or should I say flying me crazy! Then I was playing around will all RF Protocol and to my surprise I found one that worked. If your using a TX16S you normally connect to FlySky but on some of these receivers you have to choose FrSkyX2. I believe it must be an update. Any way that did the trick. Hope this helps someone.
S6R is a FrSky device using D16 which is a FrSky protocol. You can't bind to a FrSky receiver using FlySky protocols. They're completely different. Also, you use FrSkyX2 D16 for v2 firmware on the S6R. If you have a v1 firmware you need to use FrSky D16.
I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm having trouble binding an R9 STAB OTA receiver with the R9M module. The lights on the receiver show that it's ready for binding but never does. I already flashed the module to the newest firmware so I'm confused. This is my first rc build. Thank you.
Did you try frequency tuning? From the MPM Guide: If the receiver does not bind, and the RF Freq. fine tune option is available for the protocol, change the RF Freq. fine tune value to either -40 or 40 and try to bind again. If binding is still unsuccessful, continue to try higher and lower values in steps of plus or minus 40 until the bind succeeds. www.multi-module.org/using-the-module/frequency-tuning
I haven't tried frequency tuning yet so I'll go ahead and try that. I haven't updated the firmware on the receiver, only on the transmitter module, could that be causing the binding problem ? Thanks for the help btw .
Looks like you are going to be my go to guy for using this radio. I just bought my first S6R receiver for a wing build and you have walked me through the setup. I like your style of "training". You explain everything in such a clear and easy to understand way. Thanks for your help with this! 👍😊
Very glad to help and thank you for the nice comment. I'm constantly trying to improve the material so hopefully it'll just get better from here.
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you. Glad it helped.
Ahhh, clarity at last. The Frsky instructions are vague, to say the least, but thanks to John I’ve seen the light and my S8R works properly. Thanks again.
Awesome. Glad to help.
You're very welcome!
Ive just purchased a TX16 Mk2 and a S6R and this video has been priceless. Ill bookmark this one for sure. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
You're very welcome. Glad it's helpful to you.
Don’t worry too much about what other people say. Your money, your hobby.
Welcome to the channel. Glad you found it ;)
This is why I come here, thorough answers to seeming complicated topics. I think this will go in my next plane just because I've been Frsky curious for a while.
FrSky works well but they don't make things easy to understand--that's for sure.
Thanks for this clear tutorial. I'm now ready for flight test of my first stabilised S6R receiver. After the final calibration sequence using channel 12, I set the weight of channel 12 to zero, just in case I need to redo it - it'll be quick and easy to set it back to 100%.
I don't know that I'd set the weight to zero. On mine I remove the switch. I leave the mix line though--just no switch assigned.
Setting up my first S6R now.
And this vid is equally as brilliant as all your other openTX vids.
You have really helped me out a lot.👍
Heading over to Patreon...✌️
Thanks, appreciate that. Glad these videos have been helpful for you!
Glad I could help!
Thanks Vance. I appreciate that.
Take care,
J
wholesome comments like the op, where strangers take the time to thank other strangers for taking the time to make these videos that help...well, strangers, its just very pleasant and refreshing these days. its almost like were not strangers lol keep it up boys!

Your videos are clear and direct thanks for making these.
You're very welcome!
As someone new the TX16S, one trippy step is Frequency Fine Tuning. Could you please throw together a video explaining the how’s and why’s? And is it necessary for each Rx and protocol (I use both ACCST and DSMX)?
Thanks goodness for your video series. Your step by step process gives us luddites a fighting chance in setting up radios and receivers. Great Job.
Glad to help. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for yet another fantastic lesson. I love your channel.
My pleasure!
Great video on setting up S*R recievers As mentioned but many will miss its very important to do final calibration at end with ch12 switch servo dance, stick throws etc
That process and the need to conduct it is explained clearly ruclips.net/video/BObseyO1cjE/видео.html

Welcome to the channel. I appreciate the comment. Thank you.
Me too. I'm breaking the spektrum shackles and you're a huge help.
Great tutorial!
I like to use the momentary switch as the self-check trigger. That way, it can’t be accidentally left in the wrong position.
Yeah, that's a good one. I've taken off with planes in auto-level mode with FrSky S6R's more than once.
Really good job on a complicated subject. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
But when i go onto settings it doesnt show a reading on the calibration setting just 0.00
this has been a massive help in understanding on how to setup my s6r thank u for putting it out
Glad to help.
Tools menu?
What would u suggest to do to prevent the gain knob from accidently being used? How can I save the gain position so I remember where it flies the best?
Also, I was going to use the left slider for gain but on edgetx 2.8.0 LS is no longer an option under special function, or is it there but I can't see it?
Subscribed, this was awesome. I was considering the S6R for my first fixed wing receiver but wasn't sure I could set it up with my TX16 MKII. I love how thorough you are with explaining. Do you have a version of this for EdgeTX?
EdgeTX configuration will pretty much be the same. You'll set the same channels in the mixer as on OpenTX. It's a very easy translation.
Thank you very much, this was super easy to follow. But how can you get the the S6R lua script to work in EdgeTX?
It works on EdgeTX.
Thank you very much for your explanations, good work !
Glad you like them!
Excellent!! I am about to buy some receivers. I need something with a stabilizer. Do you recommend buying the new Archer Frsky generation? or good old SxR receivers? My radio is TX16S.
I believe Archer requires ACCESS which is encrypted. You'll need something that supports ACCST for TX16s.
Hi, great tutorials. I’m currently using the x9d on an excavator. The TX16s display does look more intuitive, I will try to see if you have done a comparison video as wondered what extra benefits I could gain by updating.
Here's the vs video I made: ruclips.net/video/hZf4HqBuDas/видео.html
Taranis is really good though. Hard to beat that radio. It has solid hardware.
RC Video Reviews Thanks for the speedy reply and info, will take a look. 👍
RC Video Reviews 🙈sorry I now realise I watched this video which got me thinking about upgrading to this model. Either that of the x12s
Thanks, that's very helpful.
Once the calibration is done could the ch12 b changed to a momentary switch (button) and be used as the panic mode to flip the plane right way up? I have an additional momentary button on the back of my tx16s which I'm thinking of using as my panic button.
Sure.
Can you make a video how to bind a f6r to edge tx radyo master tx16s Thank you
Great video, I am guessing that all of this applies to the Radiomaster t16 max edition as well.
Thanks
If you search for FrSky S6R LUA you will find the latest LUA from FrSky which includes the calibration script.
Hi John,
I studied sveral of your excellent videos and learned a lot of it.
And the stabi mode switch (ch10 on SE in my TX16S) does not do anything what is described in your video
"Radiomaster TX16s and FrSky S6R / S8R Setup Guide [Quick Mode]"
I would highly appreciate your advice.
Let me know how you like your crossfire module.
Not heard anything yet how well the internal Crossfire works range wise, have you? Know they bind up ok an work
@@droningon825 Internal Crossfire? As far as I know the only internal non-2.4ghz option on either of these radios is FrSky R9. Am I misunderstanding your question?
@@RCVideoReviews Yeah is not R9 crossfire? External Crossfire module just arrived what 10mins ago.
@@droningon825 No, R9 is a FrSky protocol. Crossfire is developed by TBS.
Hi John,
Excellent info. Stay safe.
Thanks for the comment Don. Do you use S6R receivers?
@@RCVideoReviews Hi John,
No, I haven't been flying for about 5 years since my dad's health started going downhill. He passed away in May at 94 and have been having difficulty making ends meet without his SS income. If I can't secure a reverse mortgage, will have to sell the home I've been living in for 65 years. He had a line of credit that we have been paying down, but it's now left to me to pay off.
Sorry to hear you’re on a rough road. I hope things work out for you.
OK I understand that weights can all be reset after calibration. How about trimming? will trimming using the normal manual adjustment and mixing for say flaperons be OK?
I don't understand this question: "will trimming using the normal manual adjustment"
Mixing is not impacted by the self-check.
Excelent explanation. Thank You very much!!
You’re welcome.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks for the prompt reply!
Thanks. How do I get the LUA scripts that I need for the SXR rx? I have EdgeTX 2.8 on my tx but I cannot see the required LUA scripts. I looked on Frsky's website and found the LUA script but that is for Opentx and not EdgeTX.
Same script.
Hello John, I'm new to OpenTX, I purchesed a TX16S and a S6R receiver. I was trying to follow your step by step, but my radio doesn't show the calobration mode in the lua script. My radio uses version 2.3.11-otx. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I only know what I show in the video. Not sure why it wouldn't show calibration mode.
Hi Thanks for a great video. I have Jumper T-12 Pro is this unit able to be programmed the same as the Radiomaster Cheers Colin
It's OpenTx so the programming concepts will apply although as a BW radio it will be a little different to navigate of course.
Before I set up S2 to control the stabilization gain, I had it set up in the radio's global functions as a radio speaker volume control. Even with the model settings, S2 still only controls the volume. Do I need to delete the volume control setting to get the gain to work properly?
No, you can have it control both if you want, just be aware when you turn up your gain you turn up your volume.
You can use S1 for gain if you want..?
have you flown this receiver in larger air planes like 1.20 size nitro with this radio as well? pretty new to the radio master unit and just trying to get some feedback when it comes to this unit
The biggest plane I have is my Dynam Smoove which is 63” and it has an S6R.
I don't have an XM+ to test with, so I'm spitballing:
1) I found an instruction manual from FrSky that says exactly this: "Compatibility: TX with ACCESS v1.1.2"
2) I found an online instruction guide from FrSky that says, "Compatible with D16 mode"
This is one of the big problems with FrSky products: Clarity of instructions.
@@rtcfpv1012 Glad you got it. It probably came with an ACCESS firmware on it.
Hi John, I have setup my S8R and works great. Picked up an SR8 Pro and can’t get past the registration part with my TX16s. Saw video with ETHOS but does me no good. Have you had any experience with SR8 PRO and EdgeTX? Jim
Do you know if the (SR8 or S8R?) has Access or ACCST firmware? If you're trying to bind with a non-frsky radio, you need an ACCST firmware on the Rx.
@@RCVideoReviews The SR8 Pro has ACCESS firmware which I now understand has to be used with an FRSky transmitter. A lot like Spektrums new receivers.
Flash ACCST firmware if they have one. Otherwise it won’t work. Good luck.
Thank you so much! Really great tutorial! I was ready to trash this RX, and fall back on a Spektrum... LOL. Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Glad your found it. Heck the specs for whatever servo you want. The radio should be able to drive it to the specs.
Sounds like your bind button might be broke. If you press the button before connecting power it should go into bind mode.
Yeah I saw that too. I’m told Motion RC Admiral RXs are rebranded Lemon devices as well.
Your video about Open TX ,Radio Master TXs and RC items are very helpful. hank you very much.
I have a problem with my S8R receiver.
The throttle of channel 3 works correctly.
However, all the other channel are fixed near neutral (5-7channel are exactly 1500ms)
Then, nothing can be done after that.
You're going to have to visit this page:
github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md
Look for the manufacturer, click on it and read the description and protocols supported.

Did you change your firmware recently? Did you change any of the firmware options?
Wonder, I bought a second s6r. Binded it with a different receiver no (62) do I still have to calibrate? Isn't the new one overwriting my first s6r receiver no 63?
Calibration is stored on the Rx. Yes, you have to calibrate all of them.
If the stab gain is overriding auto-level gain then what's the point of having auto-level gain lol?
I assume that full stabalization mode is not engaged until the plane is in the air? It seems it would make take off difficult?
Stabilization can be turned on any time the pilot wants it turned on. I don't understand the nature of this question.
Where did you get your thumb knobs for your TX16s
Are you talking about the stick ends? Just about any M4 stick end should work. I got mine on Aloft.
When you done the calibration complete, it ask you to "press return on ready".. but then it goes back into calibration again.
How did you manage to get out..? In your screen 5.50minutes you are starting with a new chapter. Did you disconnect the receiver first and reboot your tx?
After the screen flashes calibration complete you can press return to exit the calibration lua.

Its the best radio for Volantex planes LOL. Alan
Thanks for sharing.
Forgot to mention that I subbed as well, thanks, regards, Alan 👍
Awesome! Thanks and welcome to the channel. Good to meet you.
Is there a way of using the ch 9 gain function on a trim switch such as the T5 so you do not have to remember where you left the knob for the gain? I tried it by changing ch 9 to T5 but the trims did not do anything.
Use t5 up and down to adjust a GV. Use that GV as the weight on the mix for Ch9.
@@RCVideoReviews thanks but I tried what you suggested but it didn't work. It worked with all the other switches and knobs but not with the trim switches. There may be bug on v2.10.1.

Can I mount the S6r with the receiver plugs forward? I don’t plan on using hover or knife edge, but stabilization and recovery.
I believe you can. You will have to reverse the stabilization output but I don't think it's a problem.
Stuck on binding SR8 Pro to TX16S can you help please. All ok on Taranis but not on the RM?
1) Make sure you have a non-ACCESS firmware on the radio.
2) Make sure if you have a 1.x firmware, use FrSky Protocol on the MPM
3) If you have a 2.x firmware, use FrSkyX2 on the MPM.
4) In both cases use D16
Thank you for the video, I ordered S6R because of it, the gyro will save newbie like me :)
I understand that RX also need to update firmware and TX16S able to do it? I can only find some old contents on internet (other model TX) and kinda confuse especially the wiring. Appreciate if you can make explain briefly, or make a video on that.
Thanks in advance.
Don't update firmware on your S6R. All of mine worked with TX16s as they were. Not required.
been looking at this vid for the 3rd time... bought 3x a s6r;-)
Still why the calibration on switch SA? If you have calibrated once is there reason you want to calibrate again? Isnt it just way more save to just delete the entire option on SA? Means you can be in trouble?
Sure..you can delete it if you want.
Noticed the variables on your Outputs are -100 to 100, my radio defaults to -512 to 512 when setting up a model. How do I change this to a default value of -100 to 100?
Did you use the ppmus option on your firmware?
Hi, Betaflight shows Throttle and Pitch inverted. How can I fix that issue? Thank you
Outputs screen - Invert the output for Throttle and pitch (although it seems unusual to me to invert throttle).
then if channel 9 gain doesn't change anything i don't get it why you configure it ?
what did i missed ?
It changes the deflection in stabilize mode and it changes the rate of deflection in auto level mode.
Hi John, went to a swab meet today and purchased an S8R receiver still in packaging. Does your video work for EdgeTX as well as I am thinking of replacing one of my Spektrum receivers. Jim

@@RCVideoReviews John, finally figured it out, switched protocol to FrSkyX2 and it bound. Yeah! Thanks again for all your help.
Just for anyone who is having trouble binding there S6R... This was driving me or should I say flying me crazy!
If you have a v1 firmware you need to use FrSky D16.
hello I have done all the steps you say, but when I reach the end and press the key three times the servos do nothing
You say you "press the key three times" Can you elaborate a little? Maybe give me a time index in the video for reference? Thanks.
