The Nels Cline Singers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Nels Cline, the preposterously skillful and adaptable guitarist's guitarist, is known mostly for his nasty solos with Wilco. But he's also part of the underground rock and free-jazz scenes, in which he's made challenging and expressive music with countless musicians, including those in The Nels Cline Singers. Cline's short set in the NPR Music offices serves as a rare and intimate master class from a thoughtful musician.
Set List:
"You Noticed"
"B86 (Inkblot Nebula)"
"Thoughts on Caetano"
"Blues, Too"

That drummer! Scott Amendola is one of my favorites. Just saw him play at Open Mind Records in Oakland. Always so good.
Great performance, Scott's playing is amazing just a snare and some percussion bits wow!
Had *almost* as much fun watching this as the drummer did playing it. Great set!
I was fortunate to see them live a handful of times, before Nels joined Wilco. The Singers are amazing, especially when Amendola has his full drum kit.
A beautiful little set, which really makes me want to see them live. Really admirable.
I saw these guys at the Bit And Spur in Springdale Utah in 2002. It was awesome.
Dig the Nels Cline Singers big time & love the addition of Yuka to the group.
Stunning... So sweet!
Tiny genious concert!
I liked B86 - yes some is "out there" to some people but always something to learn and consider in experiencing sound. Nels Cline is fantastic in whatever he does.
This is the first time I've seen a Jazzmaster used for actual jazz music.
quasarpuffs Joe Pass used one, believe it or not. there are some videos documenting this, check it out
quasarpuffs no it was actually a jaguar that joe was playing but well, you get the idea
this is the 7th time I see that comment I guess you are not that original.
I like the yankee hotel album sitting on the shelf that Nels didn't even play on
Dissonance, baby, is never an insult.
Fino demais! Nels Cline nunca desaponta.
He says "Featuring Uka at the end. See you at the end." she turns around all awkward and looks at Nels. At the end of the song, she just makes a few cool ambient noises. Then after the song, she slowly lowers herself below the table. And is never seen again.
Charles Montgomery I wonder why she did that
she melted.
Yuka Honda.
Yuka Honda, of Cibo Matto fame, and Nels Cline's wife. It's a very small room, tightly arranged. (You could even see someone working at their computer literally on stage with them at 6:00). Ducking underneath was the probably the only way Yuka could exit the stage for the song she didn't play on.
@@jeremya4077 its like people don´t know anything about the things they say they like. posers.
Mind blown!
I LOVE the sound of Nels on a phrygian scale!
Trebgah just out of curiosity, what defines the Phrygian mode for you?
Fantastico.
we love nels cline singers.
this song makes me feel free! go, nels!
What song filardo
Great!
They all got chops!
Muito Bom!!
this was cool.
hes got a new album this year with saxophonist tim berne. quickly becoming one of my favorites from either of them
asymmetrical haircut, awesome!
13:13 deep stuff starts. Thank you!
kevin shield on drums
safe to say that by far most people who listen to this or similar kinds of music are musicians of some sort, they have at least tried to play and instrument. Its like if you havent studied or attempted to make music, you probably wont appreciate this.
Nels has used it often.
@pmandrade89 He is most definitely using his CS-3
Why do they have YHF displayed next to Nels? They do realize he wasn't on that album, don't they?
Was thinking the same thing.
It's not the tempo that discourages me, it's the randomness. I can dig a little odd-ball wackiness from left field every now & again, but I like SOME sort of recognizable rhythm or melody that I can lock in & tap my foot to. But, fair enough - this is not my cup of tea, but I guess whatever pops your boat, or floats your cork! To those who do enjoy, enjoy! ;^)
@Wezuhley so you do love it?
what kind of amps does he have going on behind him?
yeah, swing that shit!
Are those books in the background? I'd never seen so many together.
xebio6 wow really? never been to a library or a bookshop or a friend's house? they're not even so many lol
imPAHsible germiny...unlikely jipan
good tunes, good tunes.
0:33 Wilco....
I love me some good avant garde atonal arhythmic stuff. and i don't love me none of this.
O.K., so, um......YAWN!........
@cruise03 correction, the ENTIRE performance was too ambiguous for me
What the hell...I like jazz? I guess so. I had no idea. So, now what? (I'm asking that question rhetorically)
This girl behind the drummer just trying to work...
Not sure how she could possibly concentrate through this, lol! I love the intentional cymbal fumbling at 17:02, and they finally get her attention!
@GeorgeJohnPaulRingo says georgejohnpaulringo
You're probably right. But then, so is this "music". :^)
Fight fight fight fight fight fight fight fight!!
this seems to be either a love it or hate it group. I personally am more on the hate side. Go ahead and put me in your box, but I prefer songs that have some more distinct form. the first two minutes were confusing and far too ambiguous for my taste. maybe I just don't understand, but it's also possible that I just don't care.
Sounds like a 70's drama movie soundtrack!!!! Not my cup of tea
meh
Open minded music.
This is a great band, don't listen to these uninformed wankers, as you can tell by the drummer holding his own cymbal, they are a little constricted here.
Wake me up when they’re done. Sorry but this is a complete bore fest.
Dissonant elevator music. oh so edgy...(and irrelevant)
yuck.
you're just one sphere of relevance, y'know, like...?
