This is what I'm going to play next time someone calls blues in E at a jam session
Nico Nico hey man making blues in E interesting is like the most fun part about blues in E and is why you always gotta call out blues in E at least once
This has me laughing incredibly hard. Kudos.
Nels Cline is a national treasure.
You can really hear the Robert Fripp/ King Crimson influence here. Spectacular performance!
Larry Coryell/phillip Catherine influence.
I can hear a bit of Bitch Brew era John McLaughlin, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock licks in there
Thought the same thing. Riffs in Racy are directly out of the freeform jam in Moonchild. Heavy Fripp influence. Must be why I love this so much
League of crafty guitarists comes mind for sure.
Incredible musicianship... Great music and they seem like really good guys, too.
I love this crazy ass music makes all sorts of fun gears I didn't know I had start spinning lol
KEXP has the best hosts, they always look like their in the room with their favorite band of all time! Fans of the music, for sure.
--very deep ,,musically and spiritually uplifting for me,,,love the humor and the comradeship, art is not for everyone as they say,,,love to hear these guys live, awesome stuff
Hey I take back my last comment about no soul with this vid, I really was just judging the first tune I heard here. It actually kind of grew on me after that first tune. These guys should be commended for being artists (and supported!) in an era where the guitar is not appreciated by the average person
Average guy here just chiming in to say that I appreciate the guitar. Cheers.
Holy crap, what a raport these guys have with one another. Damn they're like one mind.
love how many times nels says 'so-called' in this bit
Awesome... These gents are the real deal, the echoing spirit of the duets of Coryell / Catherine, also Towner / Abercrombie some equally & stunningly awesome guitar duos.
Great performance indeed. And surprising, what fierce reactions music can provoke when it is just a little bit beyond everyone's expectations (it is by no means atonal, nor is it free jazz)
Mind. Blown.
Great pedals Robert! Big fan from AU. I have been using your pedals for years in both studio and stage. Keep up the great work! /Cheers!
Thanks sir!
Saw Nels three times in LA. Even heard a roommate’s band on the same bill. Guy’s a creative behemoth. Juilian later is likewise. This is a Herculean paring of talents.,
Listen around 26:00 where they discuss how they compose on the fly - truly amazing musicians.
amazing... didn't know nels cline could play this stuff... i'm even more surprised this is played in KEXP... thanks for that Wilco :)
Nels was shredding all kindas of styles before Wilco hired him.
Play what you want. Don’t expect people to understand. Do it because you love it.
thank you very much kexp for bringin these guys!
Terrific playing and a great interview. Nels tackles questions so engagingly.
Lovely host and great players. Thanks!
amazing. julian and nels i am amazed by your sheer talent. wow.
wow the main riff of the first song is metal AF. lol. amazing stuff
This is a whole another level.
BRAVO! Great music and great interview!
As others have noted - a big Fripp/Crimson influence here - and this is a great place to find such influence manifesting itself, rather than in some wannabe prog-rock nostalgia. I'm also reminded of the Towner & Abercrombie collaborations. But this music no mere footnote to either of the two. There's a lot more spontaneous playing around, more humor, and (for all their talent) a little less pretense!
That is a good interviewer!
My Goals Beyond comes to mind by John Mclaughlin on the piece I think it was callec Calder
BEAUTIFUL!
This makes me wanna throw my guitar away. Damn, how do you even get here?
Grandioses Duo. Open minded Music. Masters!
That last tune hit my soul
Brilliant!
Love Blues Too. 1991 - proves Nels was a heavy kid.
I thought there were some great ideas and structures here. They actually explain how some of it works!!!
Still, some items in the comment section are brutal!!! guess you better keep up your butter note quota and keep your playing under the posted creativity limit. Apparently there is a musical religious right that wants shake the old american songbook at you while condemning anything they don't get as sexual misconduct. Wonder if Charlie Parker got the same treatment in his day? Perhaps squares of the future will be condemning things that don't sound like this
Brilliant.
Just wow.
espectacular Julian Lage :)
Three viewers giving up on playing guitar.
It makes four... :P
On the contrary, this is quite inspiring.
That first song sounds like a crazy twilight zone tune
I find it admirable Julian can find creative inspiration even here. And I find it humbling that someone of his competence treats anothers' music with dignity and respect. Even if it couldnt hold a candle to what's within his grasps..
this is what i admire most about julian, he is so skilled and creative and iniative that he can pursue whatever he wants.
WOW!
wow very interesting
This is good.
❤❤
So satisfying
they're fucking madmen
HUGE.... BRAINS...
Super
In scotland we call this 'quackmoo'
Life goes on, baaah.
I follow these two in their respective careers and as a duo, my only thought on this vid is that both guitars sound so similar, at least on RUclips. I would like to hear them on distinctively different guitars.
How do you even memorise any of this?
"Calder" is great!
Julian's Calder is a pure nod to Nels' Scarnella stuff...great but a tad derivative The true hero here though is Mike Watt whom Nels name checks 2/3rd through.
The first song should be called STONK... STONK...
This is great, but not for everybody. Lol
Jonathan ALLRED and this is not bringing hot women to your concerts
Yeah lol it won't
+Peter Luck but this can bring some intriguing person to the concert, and that could be woman.
After that last "rap" set this is kinda, sorta refreshing.
"Fusion, to use the F word" haha
What guitar is Julian playing? Looks perfect.
+11yearoldscene 1997 Linda Manzer "Blue Note" according to his website
Anyone know if they are using lunchbox amps? I am pretty certain they are...
"help"
-my ears
Four thumbs down from drummers?
mbsnyderc Haha, well speaking as a drummer this is a thumbs up!
5:50
The only thing new is you findin out about it. 42:25
I wonder if they’ve ever heard of Robert Fripp haha
This is your mind on CLINE.
These guys are both used to being the spicy mustard in the sandwich. This sesh is like mixing two different spicy mustards and calling it a sandwich.
And don't get me wrong: I love me some spicy mustard. In an actual sandwich....
I wonder what happens if they put overdrive on their guitar.
I swear to my Gods, that there are some Arschlochs who live on the Death Star as it travels through the Black Holes in the Dark Web that just cruise to rage with thumbs down on anything that others like. I could just spit!
What are those 2 small they amps are the both using?
8)
what is the first song's name?? very nice!!
Racy, i think.
so-called
who wrote the first tune?
+Nick ghjjhljk racy was written by Nels
No doubt this is incredible, but to my ears it’s just noise.
Everything's just noise to ears
Exactly. Like all music.
Lage laughs at every sentence anyone says. It doesn't feel authentic.
Really not into hating on anybody's music, especially stuff as fresh and creative as this. But being a big admirer of Julian's playing I feel like Nels is really sloppy melodically and rhythmically and makes julian sound really lousy with the messy accompaniment. Jazz in the modern age has to be about defying boundaries and expectations but a lot of this just comes of as sloppy harmonically to my ear. If I want to listen to free or avant garde jazz I'll listen to ornette coleman, cecil taylor or sun ra these guys should stick to what they do best because they're both fantastic artists but this is weak.
LPjhall 128 so is it fresh and creative or weak? actually - who cares what you think! people come here to watch a julian lage and nels cline video not read your old uninteresting opinions . but tell us more about what jazz in the modern age has to be, hater.
Not trying to be a hater just putting what I think out there, to each his own buddy I hope you enjoyed these guys shredding
He's entitled to any opinion he wants, the comments section is designed for people to pass judgement and leave comments.
Totally fair, actually just saw him this week with the scott amendola band and he was killer! I guess I'm stuck just always thinking of his playing with wilco which is more prog / Indie Rock than avant-garde
+LPjhall 128 volume has a lot to do with it, they wouldnt have turned their amps up too loud in a radio studio compared to a gig. louder amps have more dynamic response and therefore the playing is more expressive
yep too professional, but so boring, I would die in their gig.
This has no soul or spirit and is probably why the average person can't relate! They are both great players though! Especially Julian. I'm a guitarist and can appreciate the musicianship of these guys but I just wish some of these guys could put what they do in a more accessible context
I think a lot of the stuff these guys do is very accessible and tasteful, but I enjoy seeing them test the boundaries of that style a little bit more.
This is purely abstract and absolute instrumental music. It means different things to different people.
horror music?..alfred hitchcock style?
