Steven Im currently in school for plumbing and I must admit ... I would have gladly paid you to be my teacher. This is a thousand dollars worth of information your giving away. Some people look to superman or Batman as there hero but I see you and I see my hero!
I e been doing drain cleaning for about 6 years now..I’m not a plumber, but successful at the drain cleaning business and this channel has been a godsend to me, thank you... videos like this have helped me tremendously because I often run into issues like this... I have to take a toilet off to send a cable and blade down an inside main, and at times the toilet has been on for 30 years or maybe less and crappy materials were used, You never know
Some things you can't learn in school, thanks for answering a long time question about the deep wax seals with the horn , I must say I watch your videos every single day and I have learned more tricks from you then I have learned from other plumbers in the 20 years I've been doing this, thanks Steve keep them coming!
Watched this video before installing my toilet a couple of years ago and it definitely saved me from a lot of grief. Just came across it again recently and had to say thanks very much for posting it.
I can’t thank you enough for this video you just saved my ass with the “closet screws”! Your accent is also amazing! I can’t thank you enough I literally just changed the toilet in my house while my husband was away and I’m so proud of myself- couldn’t have done it without this video!
Just found this channel. Renovating our first home. Got screwed by a bunch of contractors. Took our money and did horrible work. Now we finally getting back on track but this channel has been helling me make sure things are getting done properly. Thank you. I may have a few questions about plumbing and oil burning boiler as well. The baseboards. Keep the great content coming
You, sir, are a treasure. Thank you. Wonderful and perfectly narrated video. I am a cabinet maker who hates getting wet, so I don’t do much plumbing. But I can hear from the way you talk that you are a craftsman. I actually feel up to trying a toilet refit now 😊😊. By the way, I’ve always called those “hanger bolts”. The lags with the machine thread on one end. Thanks again!
These are the heroes us DIY’ers need! Watched your video 4-5 times, after watching a few others, and yours covered it all. Saved my a$$ in more ways than just money. (Went with the pvc with the rubber gasket and inserted inside my existing flange). Lots of great tips that came in handy (spacer, brass, etc). Thank you!! 👏👏👏
You are the GO to man for plumbing and heating DIY repairs, no one explains the procedure and back stories even close to yours enjoyed your videos for years
Finally a single video that gives you all the information you need for the repair plus options. You couldn't watch 10 RUclips videos and get this much detail! Thanks for taking the time to post this video and the explanation on the horned wax ring, always thought they were better but that makes complete sense now that it was explained by a pro. Enough of that sh-t, last time I use one. Thanks a bunch Steven!
watching almost 4years later and exactly what I needed! The flange is broken and instead of replacing it all I really needed was the Gapper/Spanner flange to fix the situation. A plumber would have charged me more for the time he'd take to cut out the cemented/glued flange and put in a replacement! Thanks Steve
Thanks for loading this Steve! I had to repair a flange for a toilet in my house, and the info in this video was invaluable. Followed the suggestions for the spanner flanges and wax ring without the insert and repairs went really smooth.
Wow! Steve. VERY nice job! And videotaping with ONE hand even! Thanks for sharing your 30+ years of experience to all us newbees. You have made our lives so much easier. Very much appreciated! You rock!
What a great tip about the wax funnel, that's exactly what mine is doing I replaced the wax seal about 6 months ago and I bought the one with the funnel because it looked like a better one. It's things you learn on your own out in the field that makes a great service/ repair man. Thanks
Thank you for taking the mystery out of flanges and repair techniques. I watch your cast iron flange repair video too. Awesome to see the mechanics of old school repairs. This video will have saved me hundreds in repair bills.
This was very informative. I feel almost like a flange expert now except for the molten lead whatever that was. It will help me deal with an off level flange. It was also fun to watch. Thanks!!!!!
You are so on about it all, I thank You & commend you for sharing your skills. You're down to earth & say it as it is. I like that. It's people like you that really do help out others.
Thanks for taking the time to make this informative video. Our half bath has a couple of problems one of which is a broken flange. A couple of years ago I repaired the flange with that liquid steel you can mold. It seemed to work, but a bigger problem is the uneven floor. The prior owner put in a terra cotta floor, but somehow the tile sets uneven around the toilet. The tiles are cracked from cinching down the toilet. I suspect too much mastic was used on one side of the toilet. We are thinking of tearing out the floor and starting over. I found your video very interesting. I didn't realize how many types of flanges are out there. Thanks.
I appreciate the tip about the Gapper Repair kit, and the disadvantage of the wax ring with funnel. We'll re-do our toilet replacement properly using the tips in this video.
Excellent education in a short time. Thank you!!! It was very helpful to find out the previous home owners installed tile, but never raised the height of the flange.
This video is excellent. I work at a hardware store and was recently moved from the lumber department to the plumbing/electrical department, and that company didn't teach me shit before the transfer! Your videos are a huge help. Thank you for putting them up. :)
Thank you for making this video. Excellent point about the plastic horn wax ring kits causing leaks. This is exactly what was happening with my 15 y/o toilet..water on floor. Unfortunately I reinstalled another one with the horn before seeing your video. I'll be replacing it with a plain wax one this weekend. Again, thanks for taking the time to explain the different flanges and the great tips.
Now that's what I am talkin' about Steven! Hearing it straight from a guy who is out there or has been out there in the trade and knows exactly what's going on and giving us the best no-nonsense advice for doing the right thing. I just subscribed man!
Very comprehensive video! I think if each of us sent you a $1 each, you could retire. Thanks for the details and sharing your experience with the world.
Your a great teacher Steve! I loved those closet bolts you showed that screw into the wooden subfloor. I never saw those before and want to try them out the next time I'm in a pinch.
Another great video Steven! Thanks for taking the time over your weekend off to make this video! I learned ten years worth of knowledge with this video!
Thank you for this video. It was just the insight I needed to do the flange repair myself. Boy am I proud of myself. The results were just right. Stay safe and stay healthy.
HECK YEAH!! Wicked good video! Learned a lot, and the wax ring differences alone was worth the watch. I live in Texas, but my cousins are all up in Cranston RI and the surrounding area and listening to your video was like being with them. Great job!!
Can't thank you enough, Steve. Great lesson, and clear usage of what may be needed or is needed around a closet flange. I'm getting ready to dive in. My first concern will be the integrity of the sub floor, but with your video, I have a better understanding of what to expect or handle the task at hand. All the best brother. P.s., I saw another video where you had tour dog with you. Anybody who's that good with their dog is OK by me. We have two Great Danes. ; )
Hands down, the most informative video I've seen today, straight to the point, and believe me I have gone over quite a few videos today on how to fix my toilet's flange problem . gave me some good advice and ideas of how to solve it... off to the Depot, Thanks!!
your comments on the wax ring with the funnel is spot-on. This is EXACTLY what happened to make a mess of my bathroom. The funnel sounds like a good idea, but it's totally a formula for trouble. BTW, I've got a 4x3 flange, and since I had to tear out the linoleum, I need a flange repair option to work with.
i very much enjoy your videos. i don't enjoy that i NEED to view them, but i do enjoy your presentation. you use correct terms i can go to the plumbing supply with, and not feel like i don't know what i'm talking about. you are to the point, explain in detail, and seem to gear your level of expertise to your audience. good stuff, man! keep up the educational vids for us dyi guys - who don't know how to diy! thanks! cisco..
Sir if you were in Heaven God could never let you be His plumber because with your knowledge and experience of stopping leaks it would never rain here on earth. You are a "down-to-earth" plumber. Thank you for clearing up my problem with a broken flange I have to repair at work. I am a maintenance personnel for a large organization and wasn't sure what options I had to make the repairs and how to accomplish it. You are a life saver for me in this matter. Wonderfully put together video. I am most certainly subscribing to your channel. Once again, thank you.
Being one who records whilst they work and edits in the twilight hours. I know the difficulties and how much effort goes into making these videos. Material like this is undervalued. Education has changed so much with RUclips. Society are gaining the equivalent of a RUclips plumbing degree. It's good when it's used for something positive like making individuals better engineers. Onsite experience is vital as well as real qualifications. Yet this media stream and experience passed on is helping nations strive to better engineering standards. It would have been a game changer if I had some of these videos when I initially qualified as a plumber 13 years ago. There was hardly anything like this to watch. It's great that the information is there for those that are thirsty to grow in their knowledge of the trade.
You're badass. I like how you really cover the details on the topic, even down to the reason the water & trap are on the toilet . Thanks dude! Very helpful.
The old plastic flanges with blue or red rings were carbon steel and they rotted out relatively quick. The newer ones with metal rings are made of stainless steel and are pretty reliable. The downside to pvc rings are the crack or warp when overtightened. Every product has its compromises. Good to see you showing several ways to skin a cat. There seldom is only "one way" to do something. Every situation is unique and it's good to know what your options are. Great video!
I believe this is the problem we have, I can see under the RV flusher on the floor I can see corroded metal and blue flecks which I suppose is the coating on the ring. Once this happens do you think a new ss ring will work or does a whole new ss flange neede to be put in generally speaking(one of the bolts is compromised in the present flange -toilet rocks on one side). Nevermind I can see that my flange is on the outside of the pipe so it wont work(the screws in the flange and the T itself are the only things holding the pipe steady), so I think cutting the pipe and putting a new flange in is the only choice.
Thanks to much. Big help, about to fix a cracked closet flange. New home owner so everything seems over whelming to repair. I feel so relaxed about this repair thanks to you.
This saved my ass! I thought I was in for some major repair issues but your info made it clear I had a couple of simple solutions. The metal flange on one side rusted out, other side is good. The subfloor is good so I could use a cabinet screw or one of the gabber repair flange. Thank you!
Thanks for your info. All good stuff, especially the wax ring info, didn't know of that issue. I need to replace mine and now I know to get a plain wax ring.
***** plain wax is the only way to go .. i have removes so many of the funnel waxes its really sad.most plumbers do not know .the problem with them ... water around toilet is the biggest complaint .
Thank you vary much for taking the time to do these video's. I had a broken cast iron flange at my place. Cast iron flange on a concrete slap. I had no idea what to do until I found your video. I used the spanner / gapper flange that you showed. It was not fun going in ,but it solved the problem and worked great. Thanks again for your help.
I was trying to figure out whether I should use a wax ring with or without the plastic funnel thing, you answered it super clear and to the point. thank you!!!
This is exactly what I needed! I have an ancient rusted out out cast iron flange and had no idea how to repair it. The spanner flange should do the trick. I'm also gonna take your advice on using just the wax without the funnel. Makes good sense - like everything in your video. Thanks for your help!
Excellent! Thank you! There are so many bogus "how to" videos these days. It's great to see one made by a person who actually knows the trade. I'll say it again ... Excellent!
Thank you. I do not believe I could have done this job without you video. I would out using the PVC compression flange which I didn't even know existed. So so helpful.
Thanks for the video.I have a leaking toilet which was using a funneled wax ring.I will be replacing it with one without the funnel. Had I not found your video I would have replaced it with the same funnel type wax ring. Again thanks for the info.
Hi Steven, Excellent video! My toilet was leaking and I thought this should be no problem just replace the wax ring only to find out the flange was cracked where the bolt holds the toilet down. I thought I might have to replace the whole flange until I came across your video showing the Gapper Repair Flange. This saved me a lot of time and effort to get the toilet working again. I also put in new wax ring without flange. Thank You for these videos!!!!
Thank you sir. Gave me some great helpful tips. Have an old home built in the early 20's. Have old black cast iron first floor toilet flange, vent, main and a neat original tile floor. Appreciate the help and solutions for correcting the problem. Been a John Deere technician my whole life. (Lawn and Garden to Combines.) If I can return some advice or help let me know or pass along. Thanks again.

Dru Starook good luck with your repair
steven lavimoniere What do you think about the wax ring with the additional reinforcing ring inside the wax?
Hi Steven, Excellent video! My toilet was leaking and I thought this should be no problem just replace the wax ring only to find out the flange was cracked where the bolt holds the toilet down. I thought I might have to replace the whole flange until I came across your video showing the Gapper Repair Flange. This saved me a lot of time and effort to get the toilet working again. I also put in new wax ring without flange. Thank You for these videos!!!!
Great video with a ton of real useful information 👍
Clear, concise, very helpful. Thanks for the instruction!
Once again, priceless information and helpful in many ways!
I’m about to rip my toilet out due to a leak, and renovation. I wanted to know what to be prepared for. So thanks for this video!
Hope yours went well brother. Just started my own a few months ago for the same reason.
