of course he said that: he's trying to upsell you to more expensive controllers and squeeze more money out of your pocket. I'd love to see his testing research and results that show that the controllers somehow manage to average out so specifically to having 40-50 hours of effectiveness; that's laughable. You just got unlucky. I've bought a ton of controllers in my life, and I get the same ratio of failing hardware from the original manufacturers as I do from 3rd party ones, and the same goes for varying different price points. The only thing worth paying more for (if the quality is comparable), is warranty/return policies.

Something like this that worked on XB1, PS4, and PC would be worth an extra $50, IMHO. ...wonder if anyone has plugged it into an XB1?

I see a lot of complaints about the price of the controller for various reasons, but there are a couple of factors that justify the price: Build Quality Two programmable back buttons Modular (so when additional parts are sold can be changed to what you like) To add to modularity, can be set up to physically play like an xbox controller for those who have both systems All buttons and functions can be mapped to do something else (as per the software) *Something most people overlook* And for the more technically inclined, better actuation rates. You could buy a $40 3rd party controller and play just fine. You can play with the stock controller that comes with the system and play just fine as well and pair it to a PC over bluetooth to boot. There will be people that would like to invest in a premium controller and like the options they offer. Astro put together a nice piece of equipment and I can both see and make use of the value in the C40. It is simply another option among all of the options for playing on PS4 and PC so no one (including Astro) should be put down because others cannot see the value in the product.
I've been waiting for this video ever since last spawncast when I saw you picked it up. I know it's a tech teardown but you should have talked about its biggest strength being the software. Otherwise, thanks for the great videos as always! In the software you can fix stick drift by adjusting deadzones in the software, have different response curves for the analog triggers and sticks, and map any button to a different one. The remapping and form factor is what sold me as scuf won't remap the dpad and evil/cinch are just a modded dualshock 4 which I don't find that comfortable. The downside is obviously the cost ($280 CAD)
i know it's been discontinued- or so i've heard- but i got an Astro C40 for christmas of 2021 refurbished, and it's seen a lot of use since. went looking for a teardown vid because the R1 button had deadzones (i don't even know how) from too much melee in Warframe, and the X button lost it's springiness (the gel pad under the face buttons wore out and cookie-cut a little disc out of it), and this video definitely gave me the precursory glance i needed to know how to take it all apart proper. i don't think i fixed anything, and the X button is now sunken into the faceplate, but it was still a good way to clarify which parts i could force without breaking to open it all up. i was hoping the thing would last a little longer before i'd need to tune it up, since the thing actually fits my gorilla mitts really well, but i guess not having a life really puts the durability of controllers to the test. at least it wasn't stick drift this time (cough cough dualshock 4 cough cough)
I absolutely love this controller. I have never used a scuf controller but I do have the Xbox 1 elite. I hesitated for a while before buying the elite because of the reviews but I have never had issues with it. As for the C40 TR Controller, same thing no issues with the controller and I mainly use it for PC gaming. Haven't really used it for ps4. I highly recommend it.
I'm waiting for the modules to release so I can see if I can swap out the thumb sticks with the magnetic ones you see on the Xbox one elitle controller.
U can buy a set of xbox elite accessories and open a regular playstation remote and put the elite thumbsticks in it super easily....there's a youtube video on it
I've preferred my C40 over the Dualsense Edge and Scuf Envision Pro (Playstation version). My biggest issue with the C40 is the X button registering as a double click every now and then. Apparently it's a common issue and the conductive pads need to be replaced.
I always enjoy watching the teardowns. A slight counter-point to the suggestion of a bigger battery: they likely left extra room to account for the expansion of the battery over time. Probably saw what happened to Samsung and decided it was better to be safe than sorry.
So I have one and my square button is starting to stick. You didn't really show the face button removal so did they have a little spring inside that i could maybe replace to bring it back??
Why is it most the "pro" controllers with cool features and gimmicks are always pretty damn expensive? The cheap "pro" controller I found so far is GameSir T4 and several PowerA controllers.
Likely because the cooler features make them more expensive to manufacture, and not enough people buy them to bring the price down much. So, they're sold at a premium, and the companies make a decent profit on each one sold instead of having to figure out how to sell a ton of them. And to some extent, someone willing to pay $150 for a premium controller is going to be just as willing to pay $200 if they think that it's good, whereas the average consumer is unhappy when a controller costs $60. Obviously, not everyone who is willing to pay more than $60 to get fancier features is willing to pay $150 or $200, but there would have to be a fairly large number of people willing to pay extra but not premium prices in order for it to make sense for companies to make products targeting that range, and it seems to be far more typical for companies making something that expensive to just go full premium so that they can maximize their profit per unit sold.
Fun fact u can map any button on the controller I accidentally once mapped the x button on the triangle and was wondering why I keep jumping when I just wanna change weapons then I realized it and was happy that I was able to reset it
Hey Spawnwave, What do you use to hang up your boxes on your back wall? I have posters and paintings on my wall and they're always falling do I need something stronger.
Interesting. I'd take that rear layout over the Elite layout as I always bump those controls accidentally and eventually end up removing them. A single, flat, tactile button on the back seems a lot more usable. Anywho the biggest issue to me is that it's too expensive for what it is, and it looks cheap. If you told me that was a $35 controller I'd believe you - it just looks low budget even if it feels high budget in your hands.
It looked like it was a pain in the you-know-what taking this apart, especially the rubber gripping. I noticed you had a small cut on your left thumb and figured it was during the grip portion of the video. That said, great and informative video.
I dont understand why people are complaining about the price tag. I guess as somewhat of a casual gamer I think its well worth the price. From what I hear people prefer 4 inputs as apposed to 2. But I love this controller personally, and I'm getting my moneys worth rather then buying my 4th standard controller. Feels nice and I like the 2 inputs you get. Tho yeah I'd agree tournament players prolly prefer 4 inputs best.
Controller has some cheap button mesh. My cross button broke/ripped (the rubber bit inside) twice. Analog breaks easy but you can get an off brand better one. Customer support would rath you break and so they send you another brand new instead of fixing it themselves, all mine needed was a new rubber bit but whatever, spare parts for later
my boyfriend's astro c40 ps4 controller is a bit broke, his left bumper doesnt click sometimes, I'm trying to find out how i can replace it or if it can even be replaced without having to buy a new controller. Can you give any advice?
The ability to lock the triggers in place is great, but unfortunately, because the locks are completely mechanical, the controller isn't smart enough to then adjust how they work. You pretty much have to set up a profile on the controller which adjusts the sensitivity so that the triggers hit 100% with the locks in place. Otherwise, they only do 40 - 60%, and for many games, that means that it's like they weren't pressed. Given the price, it would have been really nice if they'd handled that automatically as part of locking the triggers in place. It's still a great controller in spite of that (and personally, I don't play any games where you wouldn't want the triggers locked), but it _is_ something that they arguably should have done better. All in all, this is a great controller, but I expect that the price will turn most people off (especially with how many people already complain about the cost of the Switch Pro Controller, which is about 1/3 the price).
I bought this awhile back. I came here after watching your Power A Switch Fusion Controller to see if I wasted my money. Lol. I was on the fence on getting that Fusion controller and wanted to say thank you for swaying me not too.
Can i put the PS5 dualsense’s board + the back buttons panels + all the features from both like the adaptive triggers & haptic feeds + inside outer shell/cover & create The DS C40
I have had two of these and both have had trigger problems I get the spring click and the padded feel the triggers are suppose to have are absent in feel Idk to take it apart and try to fix it or use my warranty and third time might be the charm?
Yes, one is for heavy rumble the kinda of rumble you'd get driving over logs, boulders etc the other is for fine rumble like driving on say grass or the side of the road.

Mine just broke. The left trigger underneath is stuck and will not move. Needs to be taken apart but I'm going to contact Astro first. Up until that I was happy with it.
Exactly, to me the steam controller has the best back pedals. Honestly if steam just released a dual analog version I think they would end up selling a decent bit.

Anyone know how to fix the sticky buttons? This is my 2nd time it’s happened and the warranty is up so Astro won’t fix it at all. The rubber membrane you saw when they took it apart apparently is the culprit but I’m not sure what to do if I open it up.
Any reason why this wouldn’t be compatible with PS5 when it launches ? I assume it’s Bluetooth 4, and if that’s the case what’s keeping it from working with XBox One and Switch ? I assume the firmware can be updated to support everything
Ok so it only works over USB and wireless with the USB transmitter. Still don’t see a reason they cant support PS5 with a future firmware update, probably likewise with Xbox and Switch. I guess time will tell - Just can’t see putting a $200 dollar controller on the market with no intentions to support future platforms. A statement from Astro would be helpful convincing people to buy this thing

It gets treated as an Xbox 360 controller on the PC, so the touchpad doesn't work on the PC.
Hey, Spawn, would you recommend this one or the Elite for playing on PC? Any thoughts on the Steam Controller?
Beautiful controller, worth every penny.
Can you change the x o triangle square buttons too if they get damaged?
Lol. I was on the fence on getting that Fusion controller and wanted to say thank you for swaying me not too.
what blue tool does he start using at 8:56?
I bought one when it came out. Been using it for destiny 2 and world war z lately
I noticed the rumble motors seem to have different weights on them, but you didn't mention it - is that normal?
Yes, one is for heavy rumble the kinda of rumble you'd get driving over logs, boulders etc the other is for fine rumble like driving on say grass or the side of the road.
I tore it down all the way to get to usb connector. The controller is extremely well built. Just for the build quality aspect Original ps4, razer and nakon are not even close beeing flimsy inside and all
Controller looks great but the pricing, not great at all.
I mean it's Astro. A majority of their stuff looks great. But it costs $$$
You buy cheap you get cheap. Its worth the price. I would have paid more for it after having played with it. Get what you pay for.
Loving mine
Debating if I should try to rapid fire an extra c40 I have laying around 🤔 but no schematics
"You can't do anything with the [face] buttons; they stay in place. I don't know why you would want to, but..."
_points to Wii U style gamepad with both joysticks above in the inverted parallel style_
That damn genesis box drives me crazy.
Never noticed it. Now, I'll never be able to unsee it. Damn it...
i just got the controller but it didn’t bring the tool ... can i use a different one or it a specific tool that needs to be used
whats the tool u used to get the back pieces off
Odd to ask since this video is old but how much lighter is it without the rumble motors & the battery?
Well, not hugely. We're talking a few hundred grams.
can you change the buttons on the controller to an xbox buttons when taking it aprt like this?
Took some damage between 9:30 and 9:32?
Why wouldn't you want to swtich the buttons to make a wii u controller of course
🙄 your joking right lol
i will admit being able to mimic the xbox layout with the sticks is actually very impressive. My biggest problem with PS is the stick layouts, it's always super uncomfortable to use IMO.
will it respond if not all wires are connected? what if the shell being open
Mine just broke. The left trigger underneath is stuck and will not move. Needs to be taken apart but I'm going to contact Astro first. Up until that I was happy with it.
Use case for Dpad on the right, N64 emulation. C buttons
This video is on, but you need to show how you pop clips especially on back piece removal.
All i want is a regular controller with paddles on the bottom like the steam controller and it needs to be $60 to $70 like the switch pro
Exactly, to me the steam controller has the best back pedals. Honestly if steam just released a dual analog version I think they would end up selling a decent bit.
Hey spawn, looking for a decent wireless ps4 controller with offset sticks, anything cheaper than this??
I’m having issues with buttons sticking in the back after long use. Almost like it’s residue that causes it to loose its amount to depress. Any fix to this ?
That thing weighs, and damn near costs, the same as a Switch. Wow.
They sell Xbox One S at that price
This is for tournament players, its not for casuals, it's a premium device not for everyone, most likely every tournament player will have no problem buying this, I've seen Pro players pay $300 to mod a PS2 controler just because the PS2 has almost zero input delay.
@@mauryj.3415 fuckin christ dude.....
I liked that comment the first 143 times I saw it.
@Dr.smoky420 999Army I'm no bot just stating facts that many people seem to be ignorant about.
Anyone know how to fix the sticky buttons? This is my 2nd time it’s happened and the warranty is up so Astro won’t fix it at all. The rubber membrane you saw when they took it apart apparently is the culprit but I’m not sure what to do if I open it up.
How about a video on what button accessories fit on this controller? If possible
Money well spent. I have some gameplay posted using the C40TR. Fortnite and Gran Turismo Sport.
What size philpe screw driver is that
How much would you say the rumble motors weight?
My rb button stopped working, wish they would’ve made it easy to replace all the triggers and components and not just the sticks
I had no idea there was that 5th screw, almost shattered my controller trying to open it up
Can u explain how to take off the L2 L1 R2 R1 buttons ?
please !
Anyone know what time the new tech waves go up? Or the Sunday videos whatever it may be? Asking for a friend
Is their a controller like this one for the Xbox one.?
I love my c40.best controller Ive even owned.better than the scuf vantage by far
Any reason why this wouldn’t be compatible with PS5 when it launches ? I assume it’s Bluetooth 4, and if that’s the case what’s keeping it from working with XBox One and Switch ? I assume the firmware can be updated to support everything
Its not bluetooth because bluetooth causes too much input delay, you'll have to wait and see if its compatible with a PS5.
This controller was made for tournament players for PS4 and PC only which is what all tournaments play on.
@@BradBJeepin this was made for tournament players which, 85% of tournaments are played on PS4 and 19% on PC and the less than 1% that play smash are not going to move away from the Gamecube controller after 20 years.
Maury J. I get it.. just saying if I’m spending 200 dollars on a controller I’d like to be able to use it across the board.
Can we get a comparison video between the Razer Raiju, Scuf Vantage, and the Astro C40.
My L2 do t work and the R3 works as L2 and I need to push it super hard but is not working a all help please what should I do
Should be able to rebuild these expensive controllers as well as change out batteries. Tear down was a good idea.
When plugged into PC does touchpad move mouse? 🐁 Would like to see PC software as well. Maybe in another video.
It gets treated as an Xbox 360 controller on the PC, so the touchpad doesn't work on the PC. And all of the remapping is just between buttons, not allowing for stuff like remapping buttons to keyboard keys (though that can be done via Steam). It very much comes across as a premium console controller that also happens to work on PC rather than being designed with PCs in mind.
@@kalessin4942 I like the triggers being low like the Xbox elite controller. For bf5
Between this and the Xbox One Elite controller, which would you prefer for PC gaming?
Absolutely this one.
Neither, I prefer either of the Razer Wolverine controllers, much better feedback from the face buttons
are l1 and r1 membrane or switches?
I kinda need a controller like this. I like the xbox joystick layout better. But $200 is to much for me. Will this controller work with other add ons that i herd won't work with the other controllers like this.
We get it!
You like Offset!
GEEZ!😆😆😆
