This review breaks my heart. I love you for being honest, but I had set aside my money for this one and I was so sure I was going to love it that I almost preordered. Thankfully I waited. I was in the stream the night you tested it and the stick tension problem was one I had hoped you would be able to solve in the software. I really loved the way this controller looked and the grip and the button placement. I was excited to have an Xbox Elite level controller on the PS4. I want an out of the box solution. Astro did so many things right here and yet they somehow missed on the biggest things. Thank you for this review. Every other review I watched left out the issues you raised. This is just another example of why you are the only one I trust to give it to me straight.
Love your content bro, but I gotta disagree hard with you on this one. I'll never go back to SCUF or Battle Beaver after using the Astro. The build quality is just too pristine. It WAS a bit different going from 3 paddles to 2, but it wasn't game changing. Just took a bit to get used to. I like having my controller heavy, so that didn't bug me, and I haven't had stick drift. I've had the headset for 4 years and it's still in perfect condition and I have no doubt that the controller and modules will prevail even after heavy use. I've been through 7 custom controllers in the same time frame and I'll never buy another from another company. Quality control man. The only con that I've really had was that I think the L1/R1 buttons are a bit too slim, they should have been a bit bigger, but now that I'm used to it I don't even notice. Anyway, sorry to hear about your experience and keep up the good work
I played well with this controller after a bit of getting used to it. And believe me quality control is my full time job so I hear ya there. But after using 4 inputs and really getting dialed in with it I cannot go back. Also I tried comparing my game play and kd's from after I got used to the Astro and using my Battlebeaver...it was just day and night. I'm much more accurate with increased thumbstick tension. But again 2 paddles, 4 paddles, loose thumbsticks, tight ones, all personal preference. End of the day Astro really does make a killer controller.
AIR BEAR perhaps you should dial in the thumbs sticks with the software a bit more. I can’t help but feel I had a noticeable improvement in my play versus my Scuf Impact.
I had a choice to buy the Vantage, Razor, and others. I feel I made the right choice with the C40. The longevity, and build quality alone is worth the money for me.
Nice thinking,, it’s all bout business making the sales, u right if u make a perfect controller, people won’t buy a new controller for next year & the next or next or 10 years from now. Companies wants u to keep coming back to them.
Agreed. As a PC gamer who plays on both controller and keyboard / mouse, it's ridiculous lol... And plus on PC, the C40 is more crippled due to using Xbox drivers causing it to lose touch pad and gyro capabilities. What's even worse is that the thumbstick has a little creak when pushing it slightly in any direction. DS4 is just better.
Best peripheral reviewer honestly, you can notice this knows his shit and won't just fanboy about a product just because he likes the brand, personally for me I like the controller none of cons aside from the migration of the controller to ps5 affect me. Also I already bought the thing :D, so there's is that, great review!!!!
Martin Japutra I hated the old nacon. The trigger tension so was too much and the amplitude for the right stick was also too much. I’d prefer a stock ring in the right stick so I could use a control freek instead since I’m use to the added height. Seems like the new nacon u can adjust the amplitude on the right stick, that’s a huge improvement imo.
Originally, I was really hyped for the controller, and it was really promising, and I do believe that it will get better in the future, but as for now, the C40 is most definitely not worth it’s asking price. Thank you for the review and putting light on my comment. Can’t wait for the next video.
NO controller is worth $200. I don't care how much they add into it, that's absolutely insane to ask that much. And resellers try to bump it even higher.
@@scythe7038 Ya im more into fortnite, for cod its just jump back left and prone back right so helps with your drop shots but id like to have a button for reloading
@@TheDGLab Yeah i know reload button wil be great i play competetive so it wil be great to have reload button but it doesent really mader you don't have to reload all the time and in fornite i can understand but cod not really a problem🤷🏿♂️
I would much rather have 2 high quality, built-in back buttons; REAL buttons; than the 4 wobbly, junky little "paddles" that fall off, on the Xbox Elite. Any day.
@@richardhernandez1600 I just got mine a few weeks ago. I don't understand that either? V2 is near perfect. I think they are talking about the V1 elite.
My AIM came with all 4 but I can only use 2. If I put all 4 on it's just too likely I'll hit something I don't want to. The paddles I don't have attached will come in handy one day maybe.
They should take the mix amp out to lower the price or to add some more core features. I have a mix amp so I’m paying for something I don’t want or need.
Exactly, they should of made the controller similar to scuf as far as custom build. Making the the controller cheaper by removing the vibration/amp you don’t want. While making the controller lighter all around which I think I can say everyone would like.
100% agree. I have an astro A50 headset, I will never plug anything other than earbuds into the 3.5 mm slot. Save us 10 or 20 bucks and take that tech out.
Yeah I was thinking about getting this controller, but now that I see it has it's own mix amp, not going to. I have Astros A40s, that plug into a mix amp, and dont even work when plugged into any controller.
Controller does not support bluetooth. PS4 does not support 2.4ghz. The dingle is so the controller can be wireless over the 2.4ghz spectrum which is faster and lower latency then bluetooth.
If your interested in getting this controller vs any other custom one (AIM, battle beaver, or scuf) here's some comparisons. Wall of text incoming.... CUSTOMIZATIONS BB, scuf and AIM have amazing customizations. They win hands down in aesthetics. However, all that extra stuff costs lots of money. Performance wise, you can do many things with them when you make it online before ordering. You can create a controller that is tailored made for YOU. However once you do, you are locked into that controller format. And can never change your customizations outside of your paddle mapping. Smart triggers, thumbstick tension and all other things can vary based on which game your currently playing. smart triggers are still the most crisp I've used by far, but mostly for feels as it doesn't affect your gameplay too much when compared to the c40 and a hair trigger set up. With the c40, everything is customizable throughout your use of it via the software which is extremely easy to use. Remapping, hair triggers, stick sense and all that good stuff. Offset or parallel layouts are interchangeable. Yes there are some things you cannot change like thumbstick tension. To those wondering, it's slightly less tension than a standard Dualshock controller. The 2 profiles make it seamless to switch between different genre games. Also the ability to change stick sense and trigger sense is like none other Ive seen on the market. This is a tough category to judge but I'll call it a tie because it depends on the gamer. LONGETIVITY Hands down goes to the c40. Here's why. Build quality is top tier, modules such as sticks most importantly can be easily replaced for a reasonable price (around $15-20), and triggers will hold up better over time. The triggers are essentially normal PS triggers with a variable stop you can set physically. However it only stops them about half way. You get your hair trigger setup through the software, which relieves any worries about triggers going bad like on smart triggers. However smart triggers are a tad better IMO. 180 day warranty on the c40 and replaceable modules is a huge win. Not to mention the ability to put out software and firmware updates that work flawlessly and are very easy to do in 2 minutes. With other controllers, customizations are harder to fix because they have to be sent out to be repaired if in warranty. It's just a hassle to deal with. PRICING Ah the controversial category. C40: $200 with pretty much everything you can ask for on a controller, looks aside. It also has better longetivity. Other controllers: strictly necessary customizations for performance and your looking at $155-190 forgoing all aesthetic options. The winner of this category is subjective I suppose. Think about what you are willing to pay for, how long it will last and your maximum budget. ERGONOMICS Mostly subjective as well. But I'll give this to other custom controllers because for the majority of people, holding a controller closest in size and feel to their Xbox or PS4 will be more natural. Also there are usually grips you can choose to add on for additional $. The c40 is the biggest controller by far and it can take some time getting used to. But I also think no grips are needed because the material is fantastic and it has enough grooves to hold a firm grip. This is coming from a person who has hyperhidrosis on my hands and they sweat a lot, especially when gaming. Oh and about the number of paddles, obviously 4 is better than 2 but let's be real here, for fps games at least: it doesn't matter unless youre playing a tournament at the professional level. 2 extra paddles for what face buttons do in fps games aren't that much more useful. My two paddles for apex legends for example are my jumping and swapping weapons cause you do that a lot in the heat of battle. Reloading and melee is whatever. But hey no argue that if you have four and can comfortably use all four, it's definitely better. FINAL THOUGHTS Know yourself as a gamer, which games you like to play and what type of player are you within the games. Choose the controller that will best suit you overall considering those categories. My personal opinion after having battle beavers and scufs and now this astro, the astro wins in my book. I've only had the c40 for a couple weeks and the reason I can confidently speak about it's durability is cause I have experience on what breaks and doesn't break on other controllers. I just cant see the astro failing on me with these replaceable modules and software integrated triggers. Time will tell I guess. The most reasonable reason why I just can't see people choosing the astro is for it's size. Tbh, if it just ain't comfortable to hold then it's just not for you. Btw, battle beaver is the second best if your interested. If you got this far, I hope this helps some of you decide because I know it's a sizable investment spending over $150 for some of these damn controllers. Peace
Rebuttal to your cons: 1) stick drift, as you said in the video they fixed this at launch with the reset, there’s no way around it, even stock ps4 controllers have a reset for drift. 2) dongle, it’s a pro controller, the dongle ensures if multiple are use at tournaments there will be zero interference. It also ensures pushing out a firmware update that would make it ps5 compatible. 3) tension, this is placebo, sorry but you’re wrong about the stock ps4 controller having more tension than the Astro controller, they use the same mechanisms, you only believe the stock controller has more tension because the stick is so much shorter and lightweight plastic not metal and tall like an Xbox stick. Sure you can add more tension with other companies but then you introduce more drift down the line, use that battle beaver more often, guarantee you’ll start to see drift quick. 4) two buttons, sorry but no one but a very small minority use more than 2 bottom buttons. The people that want 4 are not pros or competitive players, they’re trick shotters and casuals like yourself who simply built that muscle memory of 4. 5) late lifecycle, see the second part to number 2 and the dongle. 6) price, patents ain’t cheap buddy. the magnetic thumbstick patent is micrososft. The swappable modules is patented by madcatz they’re gone but the patent is still owned by the creator. Sony licensing also costs money. The Hair trigger switch patent is owned by Microsoft. The “profiles” patent is also owned by Microsoft. Astro is probably selling this thing at a loss or bare minimum profit.
Just to add on to your last move there. I work for retail and we buy the controllers for about $145 USD. So them retailing it for $200... they are making plenty of cash
@@Blu3ManiC if they are selling it to retailers for ~150, they probably only cost 130 to make honestly. Think, the elite controller has the same features for 150. They dont own the patten for hair triggers switches. And ps4 probably paid them to license it for playstation.
UnseenKaution you’re only speculating, wholesale has nothing to do with profit for the manufacturers, and yes Microsoft owns those patents. The hair trigger switch and the way it’s implemented on the elite is exactly how it’s implemented on the Astro. The patent numbers all list Microsoft as the owner even in astros design patent references. Sony doesn’t pay you, you pay Sony to have the “officially licensed” product branding. There’s a reason there was no xbox version to begin with, they’d make no profit paying twice to make both instead of paying once.
@@kaauution Manufacturing cost is way more complicated than you could think. One example: a friend of mine work for a well known local bread shop. Their store is located weirdly and they have tried to minimise unnecessary costs since people are willing to travel far just for them. The average cost each is around $1.5 and they are selling them for $10 to $15 each. They can sell thousands every day but they are struggling to make reasonable profit. Hidden cost that customers don't see is huge.
Bro, AWESOME vidz as always! Thanks for making is video. I recently bought this C40 a couple of weeks ago and it took me a couple of days to get used to it. The build quality of this controller is awesome. After adjusting the two thumbstick sensitivity to 60/60/100/100/100 it is comparable/maybe even better than my Scuff 4PS. The 2 vs 4 back paddles doesn't bother me so much since I don't really need more than two and watching reviews for controllers with 4+ back (& side) paddles the inner two are usually a pain to reach during gameplay (not very ergonomic same thing with the side paddles). So far I prefer this to Scuffs newer controllers. Thanks again and keep the reviews coming!
I always appreciate the honesty in your reviews. What I will say is that A LOT of your dislikes about this controller in particular air on the side of personal preference. I have the controller and love it. Unfortunately personal preference tends to be a major factor in any of the custom controllers. One last point is that the software built into the controller is going to allow firmware updates in a way no other controller that I’ve seen can. The key is in the software. If you spend enough time fine tuning the controller, you can make it feel perfect. An example would be you can adjust the stick acceleration to where you get the same effect as sticks with added tension. As always I appreciate your honest opinion. I think this controller series had helped A LOT of people out. Wish you nothing but the best! 😉
Totally agree. It's all about the Software. The way it's built, the case that comes with it, yes it is all worth $200. The other Pro Controllers are just added buttons or peddles, trigger stops, & longer sticks if wanted. The software in the controller is why to me this is the best controller hands down out on the market. At least to me it's the best controller I have ever used.
Conde Racelis Well said my friend. Imo for any consumer out there, if you’re looking for the best PS4 Pro Controller that uses the factory PS4 Controller motherboard Battle-Beaver Customs is King. To me the C40 is right along side with the BB controller. It’s all a matter of preference at that point.
Conde Racelis Oh wow 😮! I didn’t know BB made custom modules for the C40!? Hell yeah you’ll be set. Best of luck and thanx for the info. I’ll certainly be checking them out. 😉👍
I'm loving mine after just over a week of use. Its very comfortable to play with, no performance issue, I didn't notice any drift issues or loose sticks. I don't mind turning on from the console or using stock controllers, however, an update would be nice. I highly recommend over any scuf controllers.
I ordered a wolverine ultimate after my 3rd Elite series 2 started getting sticky buttons. It has 6 extra inputs and I'm not sure I can go back to only 4 lol
@@slimecore3920 if you're a fan of FPS games......Jump and Crouch. Not having to take your thumbs off the sticks for these basic functions make an insane difference. If you play claw, no need for extra buttons though.
@@NbMW81 I'd argue that so far, I've made do with sheer dexterity. I've headshot people in moving vehicles in less than a second, and they were behind me. I transform semiautomatic into automatic with my index finger. I won a warzone game with a knife. I don't NEED more inputs. Besides, FPS games are not even my forte, or my main games. I'm a Dark Souls player to begin with.
@@drizzlydr4ke Made out of hard rubber. It worse grip than DS4 thumbsticks and Kontrol Freeks. I personally don't like it. It pretty much has no grip lol
This controller is great for me I don’t play with super high sensitivity so I found it to help me a lot. The drifting occurs when you put the modules on wrong and you screw it in. You can actually see this when plugged into a pc and you are looking into the joy sticks sensitivity.
First reviewer to mention how late these $200 elite controllers are in the life of current gen consoles. Thanks man, I hope they take your advice and put out some news about possible firmware updates to compensate for this.
Ghilliesuitup Gaming I’m right there with ya, I wasn’t an Atari guy myself but I have a PS4 scuf which feels like I could snap it in half and then I have my Xbox elite and that boy just feels solid and good to hold.
HEY YOU MENTIONED MY COMMENT! SWEET! I haven't had any other issues and i've seen some complaints about sensitive triggers but i don't have that problem. Solid review!
dude...your review video just saved me from trading in some games and my Switch to get this controller. Thank you, I'm definitely subbing to your channel!
Thanks again for a quality vid. I’m experiencing a unique issue. I’ve already replaced the right thumb stick module. There’s a rubbing noise when it’s moved and resistance. Same issue happened with the new module. I love the controller. Feels reliable outside of the issues I’m having and you one of the greatest points you made was the thumb stick tension.
I'm honesty thinking that since the PS5 will be 100% backwards compatible with PS4 games, the controller even if changed won't be changed much and most likely ps4 controllers will still be compatible with the PS5, I don't see Astro making this mistake, they may have signed a NDA and can't say anything about it but I would almost guarantee they were in direct contact with Sony about this. I much prefer the the C40 to any other custom controller I've used personally. I bet they come out with modules that have different tensions, along with other cool things as well. I love mine personally and that's the great thing about choices, taste is subjective, we're all not going to like the same things.
there is no way ps5 will work with a ps4 controller. Business is business boys. Do you really think they care that you bought a elite controller for ps4 right before Sony launched their next flagship console? or that you bought a dual-shock 4 stock for your Playstation 4 before the dual-shock 5 launched for Playstation 5? I’m not trying to be an asshole by no means just thinking logically. You could buy a cronus max for the next gen when someone figures out how to do it and use any controller on that console.
One of the biggest pro's to me is the swappable modules if one analog module is shot, from being used and abused. Go to Battle Beavers and buy an increased or extreme tension module ($20 a pop), instead of sending out a controller for repair or buying a new controller (main reason why I chose this controller)
The stick drift is actually a bug on the Apex side. If you set the Look Deadzone in the game's setting to none, the crosshair will go all over the place even with the DualShock 4. I've tested this with three different controllers.
@@Dravira yea had that problem with my first elite that's why when i bought my 2nd i open it and replaced the thumb-sticks with scuf thumb-sticks i did replace them on my first as well and now i have two amazing controllers (i dont like the magnetic ones )
Awesome review! I actually held one in hand and I actually liked the weight of it, feels more solid to me. Glad I watched this to see the cons, for me it definitely makes this not worth the $200 price tag.
FYI to those having stick drift issues especially after switching the modules, just put your controller on a flat surface, press and hold the programming button on the back 'til it lights up & vibrates and wait for about 30 seconds. The controller will light up and vibrate again when it is done resetting. Happy gaming!
I respect the review even though I'm loving everything about the Astro C40 TR Controller. I saw a video of why they decided to have a Dongle for the controller & why you couldn't turn the PS4 on & off. Their reasons for why is to have the audio build in the controller to be near 1 to 1 of their Audio Products & for the controller as much little latency when using it. They wanted you to feel like the response time is as fast as if it was wired. Which from testing the product for 2 weeks now, I don't feel much of a difference from wireless & wired. So to me it was worth the trade off for having a dongle & not being able to turn the PS4 on & off.
The dongle is there because Logitech who makes the wireless connection wasn’t satisfied with Sony’s stock Bluetooth so they made one with the standards of their specs. That’s why it has a dongle. It’s better than Sony’s wireless according to other reviews.
And1User1987 yeah true. I just watched a video of a sponsored gamer from Astro and he said it was mainly for the PS wireless not being up to par. Apparently their is more info on Astro’s website. I just haven’t Cared enough to look lol
I bought my c40 December 2019 it’s April 1st 2020 and this thing has finally hit rock bottom stick drift makes it very painful to play I cannot sprint at all ! I cannot aim without having to compensate for so much stick drift and even then it will go out of wack mid fights constantly
Theboyz_ on I’m thinking of buying the replacement modules made by Battle Beaver for the C40 although I contacted Astro and let them know and they’re sending me another two replacement stick modules
*Don't get this controller!* The astro C40 is a great overall controller and has a lot of perks that make it a great option for a elite controller. But ironically its main selling point, the swappable stick modules are the cause for its biggest problems. After a couple of months the sticks start to gain a lot of stick drift making it almost impossible to play competitive FPS titles. The reset/reprogram button won't fix it and you're going to be forced to order a replacement part from Astro. Which will work for a while...until it goes haywire like the last one. I bet if the sticks were directly built into the controller this wouldn't happen but unfortunately that conflicts with the main feature of the C40s.
If more stick tension is something you want, Evil Controllers and Battle Beaver both sell custom modules with added tension. As well as the Astro software let's you tune your right stick sensitivity down to compensate for a looser stick. And it works. If you want a module they come in 80G, 120G and 200G I believe. I believe the stock one's are 60Gs of tension. For FPS's it's so so nice to add more tension to your right thumb stick
I’ve had the controller for a week and I love great quality and I only use 2 back buttons-paddles so 2 is fine with me.the only issue I have is not being able to turn the console on with the controller Smh pretty dumb
itz_auke sorry for the delay, I have had my impact for about 1 year and the only thing I’ve noticed is the stick drift, but I would say that that it was worth it, so if you feel as if you want to get better then do it. Wish you luck and have fun during chapter 2 season 3!!
I liked your take, your alternatives and the fact that you used Apex as your reference game. It's the game that has me in the market for a new controller. Just earned a scriber babeeee
The paddles aren't preference though. It's how much the controller offers. Using two paddles instead of four is preference. the controller limiting you to only two buttons at a 200 dollar price tag is about as big of a con as you can have.
@@TA-zw2rv nailed it Troy. People using 2 or 4 is a preference, but a controller ONLY having 2 paddles at a high dollar amount is a massive drawback. At $200 bucks there are SEVERAL other elite controllers with 4 inputs, so how is this reasonable at 2 inputs for the same price?
nah its not a huge setback its a set back cause you use 4 i only use 2 and ive had the xbox elite before this and this controller is 100times better and bumpers havent broken already like my elite did many times a fully maxed out scuff will have shitty build quality but 4 paddles screw that have fun getting stick drift after a few months
I had played with an FPS Strikepack for about 2 months when I decided to go try out a Scuf. Bought the Vantage. Loved having 4 back paddles and 2 extra shoulder buttons, but had all kinds of connectivity issues, even after resetting and updating twice. Also scuf trigger stops were cheap, and setting hair trigger didn't really make any difference. I traded it back in to GameStop after 2 weeks for the C40. Even after swapping modules twice, I encountered no drift, response time is fantastic, and the dongle is so you can play it on PC as well. I disagree about thumbstick tension as well, and even put the longer thumbsticks on. Performance is outstanding. I DO wish it had the 4 paddles, but I personally think C40 is the test bed controller, and a new model will come out with 4-6 extra buttons /paddles. Also, PS4 may only have a year, but this can easily be fixed with firmware update, or, thanks to that dongle, it might be compatible with future PS, and it'll stay compatible with PC.
It comes down to if you think it's worth the money to be able to be on a level playing field when it comes to competitive shooters if you dont have years of practice playing claw. Personally the scuff impact was a worth investment for me as I can't play claw so I'm able to compete with super tryhards with relative ease in games like battlefield 4,1,5 and rainbow six siege to an extent.
Get the collective mind FPS strike pack it’s 40 dollars and it gives u to paddles but u have to play wired it’s worth every penny I have mine still works after a year of heavy gaming I just bought the Astro controller but the strike pack is a really good option
Bikinibxttom I second this but it has to be wired all the time and u need to use a different cable after sometime cause it starts randomly disconnecting and I’m not sure but seems like it’s causing stick drift sometimes for me
Ever since playstation implemented button assignments, you dont need a scuf to be competitive at all ... before that it was absolutely necessary to compete at a high level
I really wanna get this controller, I'm never buying another scuff controller. They always break. And I don't even throw my controller or anything. I always have problems with the thumb sticks.
Thats the reason i bought this controller. I cant trust any other elite controllers cause my L3 is always wearing down to a point that cant be fixed 100%. If my L stick goes out I know i can always buy that one piece and not spend another $150+
I was sold on this controller when I saw the back two large extra mod buttons. They look easier to press than the small scuff mod buttons. The larger buttons benefit me because one of my hands has nerve damage from wrist surgery many years ago so the larger button will allow me press down with two fingers instead of straining my hand by using one finger.
I’m a gamer but not a pro. $200 seemed a lot at first but I’m on my 4th DS4 due to stick drift. They come out to about $70 after tax so that’s already $80 that it would’ve saved me. Not including time & gas plus having to go without playing a few days. For $280 I can probably buy this and buy a few thumb sticks for replacement if problems occur. Very well thought out
Had the same experience. 2 paddles is the major dealbreaker. I assume that they could release higher tension modules for the thumbsticks, but I have no idea why they went with only 2 paddles...
I love the feel of it, but there are two big problems for me. You can’t adjust the physical tension on the analog sticks and the back buttons are not removable. This is why the Xbox elite series 2 is the best controller ever made.
Damn, finally a good in depth review. I've seen many reviews but this had the information I actually wanted to hear. Stick tension is something I value and had not heard many people talk about. Plus I had heard of the stick drift, but hadn't heard of the reset function.
Artemis GD it might also be trying to cut corners for latency issues where some wireless pro controllers once in a while have or can get delays when moving the sticks or pressing buttons.
Hello! Quick question if you don't mind: think this controller would be well-suited ergonomically for someone who uses their index fingers for L1/R1, middle fingers for L2/R2, and ring fingers for the rear paddles/buttons?
Absolutely agree with you with this controller not having at least 4 remappable buttons. Like having 2 sure is better than nothing, but you would still have to move your right thumb off the R stick to press the other 2 face buttons. But if they had 4 remappable buttons, all 4 face buttons could of been remapped where I wouldn't have to move my right thumb a single time. That is why I didn't pick up this controller. I wanted it mainly for the changeable module feature but since it has 2 remappable buttons, I changed my mind instantly.
Same here stick tension 😑 I was saving money to get this controller, I do have a strike pack though but still I want to get this controller Soo bad,why stick tension 😑
ab cd just so you know you can adjust sensitivity to make a slight dead zone in the sticks similar to the ds4. This made a big difference. I honestly don’t feel this is a major issue as in a week playing on the sticks you will be good. Just adjust the sticks to your liking. Problem solved, controller is amazing I’ve put in over 100 hours with it on stream.
minhas rasel I have the controller if you put a tall domed stick on the right stick it gives you a lot more control in my opinion it’s better then the regular controller stick
from owning a scuf vantage and the c40 for a few months each. I originally went for the vantage really stoked about the four inputs. but after two ish months I had it, I started experiencing REALLY bad stick drift, and the left stick started to depress further than it should and stick slightly, ruining sprint pretty often. I ordered a c40 about 2.5 months ago. haven’t had a single issue that I had with vantage, and adjusting to two paddles was pretty easy. it helped that the scuf got sto bad I was using the DS4 again for a bit. overall no issues with mine. just my opinion, appreciate your review!
HighRule45 just ordered some this week should be here Saturday. I got one increased and one extreme tension. Hope they keep this controller alive for me!
Great video. I play mostly on Xbox and Use the Razer Wolverine Ultimate (4 paddles, 2 extra buttons) and the Elite(4 paddles always) I use a stock controller on PS4 with 2 xtra paddles. Hard for me to invest in this Astro product with only 2 paddles when I’m looking at investing in 2 new consoles Christmas 2020. Thx. Great honest review.
After watching all your "Elite" gaming controller reviews I have come to the conclusion that all elite gaming controllers apparently suck ass and I'll stick with my Dualshock 4 controllers which I've had for 6 years since I got the Destiny 1 bundle LOL
I enjoy this review which was a great review. You didn't say anything bad because you just gave constructive criticism. I might buy this controller though. Keep up the good work.
I paid 140€ for an AIM controller with the four paddles. Then I paid another 120€ for another one, almost identical (different prices because they had different sales bonuses at that time). So I paid 260€ for two controllers and will never run out of charge while playing wirelessly, which was the plan. I'm very happy with that solution.
ARC.. when you turn on your tv, the console turns on as well :) Or if your tv is already on, you just choose the input where the console is, and the console turns on automatically.
**Heard $200, wrote comment and left**

Might as well get a Battle beaver...
I just started this video and wtf
I agree. I’ll still use my Impact from time to time but the Astro will be my go to controller.
Astro best pro controller out
They made this controller this way so they can come out with a c50 later on that kills all the cons lol
Nice thinking,, it’s all bout business making the sales, u right if u make a perfect controller, people won’t buy a new controller for next year & the next or next or 10 years from now. Companies wants u to keep coming back to them.

Elite controllers should cost 100-150 200 is the price of a damn console.
I really Hope so I press the L3/R3 on accident all of the time.

Any chance you'll be checking out Nacon Revolution Unlimited?
Martin Japutra I hated the old nacon. The trigger tension so was too much and the amplitude for the right stick was also too much. I’d prefer a stock ring in the right stick so I could use a control freek instead since I’m use to the added height.
Seems like the new nacon u can adjust the amplitude on the right stick, that’s a huge improvement imo.

They should release new thumb sticks with tensions
they will
That's perfect
That's kind of the promise of the module system. Here's to hoping they listen and offer exactly that.
Omer yes I hope they will
It's coming
If your interested in getting this controller vs any other custom one (AIM, battle beaver, or scuf) here's some comparisons. Wall of text incoming....
CUSTOMIZATIONS
BB, scuf and AIM have amazing customizations.
LONGETIVITY
Hands down goes to the c40.
PRICING
Ah the controversial category.
ERGONOMICS
Mostly subjective as well.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Know yourself as a gamer, which games you like to play and what type of player are you within the games. Peace

Rebuttal to your cons:
1) stick drift, as you said in the video they fixed this at launch with the reset, there’s no way around it, even stock ps4 controllers have a reset for drift.
UnseenKaution your retailer is on the wholesale, but you didn’t address what Astro’s loss is on the profit margin.
I like the knife that you use as a pointer. I think a gun would be more savage though!
HYEonDEATHROW underrated comment

I hope you're right about the ps5 ps4 controller compatibility because i have recently bought a pro controller and is being delivered tomorrow.
there is no way ps5 will work with a ps4 controller.
Ok, it was good. But what about Nacon revolution unlimited pro, new one, wireless, 2019?
The stick drift is actually a bug on the Apex side. If you set the Look Deadzone in the game's setting to none, the crosshair will go all over the place even with the DualShock 4. I've tested this with three different controllers.
Then your controllers have stick drift. None is set to none with no drift.

Just my playstyle, but the lack of tension in the sticks improved my accuracy.
FYI to those having stick drift issues especially after switching the modules, just put your controller on a flat surface, press and hold the programming button on the back 'til it lights up & vibrates and wait for about 30 seconds. The controller will light up and vibrate again when it is done resetting. Happy gaming!
Honestly, this is my favorite controller right now, I have a the vantage and I have the xbox one elite controller and wish I can use it for my xbox 1
Alvaro Pizano thats weird
I don’t mind having 2 big buttons that won’t snap off
The fact that you pointed out the non-remote console on, I subscribed.

Mario Quiros Damn that’s exactly what happens to me with every Scuf one year after buying them. I was really hoping this was more solid.
Love watching your reviews. I will def be watching your reviews on stuff before I buy.
Just open it and clean the sensors for the sticks it’ll fix it

If more stick tension is something you want, Evil Controllers and Battle Beaver both sell custom modules with added tension. As well as the Astro software let's you tune your right stick sensitivity down to compensate for a looser stick. And it works. If you want a module they come in 80G, 120G and 200G I believe. I believe the stock one's are 60Gs of tension. For FPS's it's so so nice to add more tension to your right thumb stick
I’ve had the controller for a week and I love great quality and I only use 2 back buttons-paddles so 2 is fine with me.the only issue I have is not being able to turn the console on with the controller Smh pretty dumb
you have to put the usb/bluetooth wire in turn the console and then turn the controller on
Absolutely love your reviews and impressions man. Keep up the great work.
I definitely have 4 paddles, that’s why I’m such a sweat on most of the games I play
TTV_Restile_YT do you have the scuff impact? Every body says the scuf buttons break really fast is that richt?
itz_auke sorry for the delay, I have had my impact for about 1 year and the only thing I’ve noticed is the stick drift, but I would say that that it was worth it, so if you feel as if you want to get better then do it. Wish you luck and have fun during chapter 2 season 3!!
@@ttv_restile_yt545 how bad is your stick drift ? I don’t have luck with this fucking stick drift man
I liked your take, your alternatives and the fact that you used Apex as your reference game. It's the game that has me in the market for a new controller. Just earned a scriber babeeee
I'm sold, I'm getting one this black friday
Thanks for the review on that controller it has helped me by not getting 1 when it arrives in the UK much appreciated
P.s keep up the good work 👍👍
every complaint all sound minor and personal prefrence other that stick tension so again good review but negative cons are all prefrence
agreed!!!
From 4 to 2 buttons in the back is a huge setback.
So it seems like me sticking with the standard controller is the right choice, because none of those controllers seem worth the money.
Gary Mason nah I don’t think so u can but you’ll never be as good
Exactly why I returned mine. It was a nice first effort, but has a ways to go. Nice review.
Is there a cheaper and better controller?
Biggest reason I returned my C40 controller was because of how loose the sticks felt.
U missed out they just came out with the stick tension its way better
@J B just go to battle beaver customs.com bro
I’m a gamer but not a pro. $200 seemed a lot at first but I’m on my 4th DS4 due to stick drift. They come out to about $70 after tax so that’s already $80 that it would’ve saved me. Not including time & gas plus having to go without playing a few days. For $280 I can probably buy this and buy a few thumb sticks for replacement if problems occur. Very well thought out
Had the same experience. 2 paddles is the major dealbreaker. I assume that they could release higher tension modules for the thumbsticks, but I have no idea why they went with only 2 paddles...
I would still take this controller over my stock DS4 controller, thanks for reviewing this for us.
I love the feel of it, but there are two big problems for me. You can’t adjust the physical tension on the analog sticks and the back buttons are not removable. This is why the Xbox elite series 2 is the best controller ever made.
Ew that controller has died on me like 3 times cuz of buttons breaking
Thanks for the review! Well done 👍
4:31 the 2019 ps4 gold headset comes with a dongle
Damn, finally a good in depth review. I've seen many reviews but this had the information I actually wanted to hear. Stick tension is something I value and had not heard many people talk about. Plus I had heard of the stick drift, but hadn't heard of the reset function.
VERY NICE and honest review 😎👍👌🎮
The dongle is for PC controller users. This controller is for PS4 and PC.
Artemis GD it might also be trying to cut corners for latency issues where some wireless pro controllers once in a while have or can get delays when moving the sticks or pressing buttons.
Hello! Quick question if you don't mind: think this controller would be well-suited ergonomically for someone who uses their index fingers for L1/R1, middle fingers for L2/R2, and ring fingers for the rear paddles/buttons?
woah, remapping without having to pay extra money? (damn you, scuf)
U do pay extra money the tings 200 dollars G
I am so glad I found your video. Thank you for a great review!
Two minutes and there is already a dislike on a 10 min video...
Must be Astro employees
Absolutely agree with you with this controller not having at least 4 remappable buttons. Like having 2 sure is better than nothing, but you would still have to move your right thumb off the R stick to press the other 2 face buttons. But if they had 4 remappable buttons, all 4 face buttons could of been remapped where I wouldn't have to move my right thumb a single time. That is why I didn't pick up this controller. I wanted it mainly for the changeable module feature but since it has 2 remappable buttons, I changed my mind instantly.
Next gen consoles ( ps5) should have 4 back buttons(paddles) as extra inputs not as remaps of other buttons.
About time don't you think 🤔
you can remap any button except the triggers with the quick map button, not just the paddles.
Me: *nothing can change my mind i am buying astro c40*
Air bear: ... stick tension
Me: crying using my shity controller
Same here stick tension 😑 I was saving money to get this controller, I do have a strike pack though but still I want to get this controller Soo bad,why stick tension 😑
minhas rasel is strike pack good?
ab cd just so you know you can adjust sensitivity to make a slight dead zone in the sticks similar to the ds4.
Bikinibxttom there are easy fixes
from owning a scuf vantage and the c40 for a few months each.
I’m on my second set of replacement stick modules....don’t waste your $200
HighRule45 just ordered some this week should be here Saturday.
😆😆
I enjoy this review which was a great review. You didn't say anything bad because you just gave constructive criticism. I might buy this controller though. Keep up the good work.
This controller feels the best by far go for it I been wrecking with this
You can change your PSN name now
Great review, I like the information and honesty.
The dongle is to reduce input lag as opposed to syncing with the console which adds considerable input lag. This is crucial for competitive play
ARC.. when you turn on your tv, the console turns on as well :) Or if your tv is already on, you just choose the input where the console is, and the console turns on automatically.
