- 7Artisans 35mm f0.95 vs Mitakon 35mm f0.95. Street photo Tokyo POV. How do these 2 lenses compare? Does the cheaper 7Artisans stand up against the more expensive and well loved Mitakon?
I decided to take these 2 lenses out for a hands on look and see how they both performed in the street. This is not a technical video, more just real use experience with plenty of images showing what they are capable of.
I shot using the Fuji XPro3 and the first set of images are straight out of the camera JPEGS all shot in classic chrome, followed by a set in Acros and finally a set of my own own RAW edits. I also added my own crops to the images as I saw fit.

This was such a pleasure to watch. I use the Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 most often and at full aperture about 80% of the time. I have been watching the 35mm f/0.95 videos to convince myself that I DON'T need one, but this video is the first to make me think that it could be an asset.
But really, it is simply because of your skill on the street. You could have been just as effective with the f/1.4, while I may have failed miserably with either of those two lenses in your video. I know that you presented the best, but your ratio seems pretty good given the time limit with each block of shooting.
If nothing else, you inspired me to get out there with my X-Pro2 and 35mm. I really am glad that I watched your presentation.

Hey Nice! Great shots! I just got a Mitakon today, and I really like it so far. The focus ring is nice and smooth. But I have to practice with that quite a lot to get fast enough to catch the moment. But it's a nice challenge :)

As you said, sharp focussing is pretty hard. I struggle with even 1.2. But these lenses are fun to shoot with. Great video series. I am enjoying all of these.

Yes mate - I like the fact you're talking over the pics, gives a bit background to your decision making as a street photographer. For the lenses I gotta be honest - dont see too much difference from the photos you took
Yeah, they are optically very similar, there really isn't much noticeable difference, the main difference is the price so I am guessing that many people will go for the 7Artisans over the Mitakon for sure.
These explanations let us know what you think, very interesting! And some great pictures too... ah, and btw. a cool lenses... sub!
Thanks for the review! Was wondering about focusing fully open on the 7Artisans; would physically moving your body be effective at attenuating the focus? Hard to get a sense of just how shallow the DOF is in practice, while it seems the Mitakon has it for smoothness of focus, the price difference is appealing…

Tokyo seems to be a very photogenic city (especially with Fuji cameras).
I kinda prefer the bokeh on the Mitakon (it's pretty legendary). The 7artisans bokeh feels pretty nervous, and not as dreamy.
But well, for a lens that's half the price, that's definitely a bargain !

Yeah I think the mitakon just takes it for me, however if I had neither and was looking into getting one the 7artisans would be so tempting just because of the price and you Could also grab a viltrox lens as well as the 7artisans for cheaper then the price of the mitakon.

Nice video this. You’re spot on with the 7Artisans observations. Compared to their 50mm f1.1 it’s not as well dampened. Like your style. You got a sub from Blackburn.

Would you recommend this lens for product photography or i should go for 1.2 or 1.4?
Looking your foto there is no diferent about the quality.. It just about how fun to use for focusing, but for me mostly taking video , i will choose 7 artisans..

Awesome insights! Thank you! What do think about the bokeh of each lens and sort of three dimensionality (Subject Pop)? Mitakon reminded me a little of when i shot leica summilux 50mm for the first time.
I need to spend a bit more time with them both individually as I haven’t shot much with the 7artisans yet other then making this video but off first impressions they both produce pleasing results. I may take the 7artisans out this week a few times and try experimenting a bit more with it so keep your eyes peeled for a future video and some more images

Does lightroom/photoshop recognise the 7artisans for corrections?
It won't do as they are manual lenses so won't have the connections to send over the data.
Insane, how quickly are you focusing - especially considering the f0.95?
I have a copy as well and likely need a ton more practice but definitely cannot run and gun (per se) lol.
Thanks for the vid - it strikes me that these lenses aren't really aimed at street photography with moving "targets", so you did well to get sharp images. I'm thinking seriously about one of these, but for fashion-editorial and portrait work and would have welcomed a few close up portraits just to judge the bokeh and "atmosphere" that such lenses might generate.
Thanks! Wonderful job! I have the mitakon and I hesitate to change with the 7artisans -I had the 35mm 1.2 and he was very special. The 7artisans seems to be a bit less heavy, the mitakon on fuji xe3 is little big, so I always hesitate to take it with me everyday. Do you think there's a big difference?
I feel the same. I love my Mitakon on x-pro3 but when it comes to weight, it's a burden to carry around. I'm not sure the weight difference makes it a game changer though. What's your feeling? Jonas Rask's review also reports that the 7artisans is a tad darker and its field of view is narrower. Can you confirm please? Love the video by the way.
I would say if you have the mitakon already there isn’t much need to get the 7artisans unless you wanted a cheaper back up incase it were to get damaged, lost or stolen. If you had neither I would say the cost savings on the 7artisans is a no brainier as they are so similar. If it’s sharpness you ate after there are better 35mm lenses then both of these like the Fuji 35 1.4. I like lenses with character though (not for every situation) and find both these lenses fun and frustrating in equal parts, also I like to do a lot of night shooting so the extra stops are handy if difficult to nail. Also weight wise again it’s hardly noticeable the difference.
Great video!! How difficult was it to do manual focus at 0.95, especially at night?
it really depends on how far from the subject, up close it's pretty hard especially with a moving subject and focusing on the fly as the focal plane is so narrow, however, it gets a bit easier the further you are from the subject. If I have time to properly frame a shot then its not too bad though
@@Visions_in_Toyko I love manual focus for photography where I can take my time, but attempting to capture people in a street photography session, I'll miss focus on half my subjects (using Sony's zoom aid and focus peaking still isn't fast enough to capture a moving subject reliably for me)...
So after looking side by side in your studio, how did you compare the results f the two lesnses?
In terms of sharpness they are both very similar wide open, however getting that focal plane lined up is really tricky especially when dealing with moving subjects. I would say that at f8 the 7artisans looked a little sharper in many shots to my eyes, however it also suffered some pretty bad purple fringing in a couple of shots where the subject was stood in front of a white sign. If I were looking to get one today not having any I would probably go for the 7 artisans and with the money saved get a viltrox 23mm as well, it’s worth noting that these manual focus super fast lenses have a particular look and feel, but if like me you think that sharpness isn’t the be all and end all of a lens and want something with character that is fun to use then either is great.
Is the Mitacon better handling purple fringing ? or it is same with 7 Artisan ?

the mitakon does handle purple fringing alot better from what I have seen so far, I took a few shots where it was very noticeable with the 7artisans, particularly when a guy was stood infront of a white light it was quite bad. However its about being aware of the limitations of these lenses, they are budget for a reason and once you figure out what conditions it works best in then you can get great results. I quite liked the flare on both to be honest, i still need to spend more time with them though to get a better idea, however I have also been out shooting with other lenses so may not get another chance until next week some time

Nice work (from a fellow Manc), looks like a great lens - my only thing is that I'm not a big fan of what is a 50mm equivalent I'd just need that extra bit of breathing space that a wide gives, hope they do a 16mm x series.
A 16mm f0.95 would be insane!! Who knows what the future may bring, would have to be one chunky piece of glass to get that though I imagine

On my 7artisans .95 the focus ring is really well dampened. Maybe your copy is defective. I love this lens. Really like close focusing and blowing out backgrounds. Rarely shoot wider than 1.2 for excellent corner to corner sharpness. Very good value, very pleased.
There’s definitely no consistency with the build quality of this lens. My rear element spins freely and rattles really loud and I just received it today. The focusing ring also has a light grinding sound. Also on my rear element is a little spot on the inside of the glass. Definitely regret buying it

Send it back! I’ve had bad copies of more expensive lenses. Don’t except a bad copy because this is a great little lens.

I am using the 7artisans 35mm f1.2 for couple of years and honestly it's an okaish lens. Not too good not too bad either. The suit spot I found is around f5.6 - f8. The quality that mitakon has produced it's way better. Again as 7artisans is lot cheaper so it has its drawbacks.

The 7Artisans 35/0.95 is really intriguing. I'm curious though on how you took all your images today--thru the viewfinder or the LCD? Is it really that hard to nail focus manually provided that you have focus peaking tools in your Fuji cam(s)? It's because if I couldn't get to nail focus on all my shots, it's just going to be pointless for me to acquire this lense.
If I'm willing to learn to focus manually, though, would you recommend for me to purchase one? Thank you.
I took the images through the viewfinder, the reason it’s tough to nail focus is because for many shots I was shooting wide open in the street, it means that I’m reacting to what’s going on as I see it and so sometimes only have a split second to react and when the focus plane is so small it can be tough to hit it every time. With practice it should be easier over time though.

I was contemplating on purchasing the Mitakon 35/0.95 months ago but I decided to postpone it due to the difficulties of capturing properly focused subjects with manual lenses where it may just frustrate me leaving me to regret spending money for it. But, in all honesty, I am very interested in learning to shoot in full manual mode. Since Mitakon released a 17/0.95 for the M43 system a few months ago, it could be that the 23/0.95 for the apsc mount is just around the corner. That could be a better option over the 7Art 35/0.95. Thank you.
As most of your shots were on larger distance its difficult to compare depth of field and bokeh - which would have been nice to see some pcitures with more different distances 10m, 5m, 3m, 1m, 50cm.... or something like that. As i think the true srenght and adanvante of the mitakon over the 7 artisans comes out in shorter distances to the object. and for people who want to focus fast: just use the focus peaking function of ur camera (whoch most have nowadays.)

The first 2 sets were sooc with just mild crops if needed, the 3rd set were my own edits.
With these lenses. You didn't go over 1000 iso. That's amazing!

You started with the Mistaken during the day and ended up with the 7artisans at night. Nature conspires to make it more difficult to nail focus at night regardless of lens or system. I would like to see a side by side comparison somewhere.
If you look at the lens descriptions by each image you will see I used both lenses during the day and both lenses at night
Too soft wide open for street photography and landscapes. Be nice to see it stepped down especially in the day when there is already plenty of light.

It's a pity and a mistake that you didn't show us the black-and-white photos with the F8 aperture and the 0.95 aperture. I wonder if chromatic aberration would occur. It is always necessary to show the same photos on different apertures.
im sure there are plenty of videos that show you that information, mine are not technical reviews, just examples of the kinds of images you can get and my thoughts on using the lenses

I spent several minutes want to know the conclusion but you just told people you shoot with the 2 lenses without any conclusions at all. People don't like this kind of cheap review videos that wait time. Viewers can not tell any difference of the images from the video at all.
Then if you can’t see any difference the conclusion is right there. Go for the cheaper model and save yourself some money. Also it’s not a review video it’s just me trying these lenses out and sharing my thoughts and showing the kinds of images you can get from them. There are plenty of review videos out there if you want conclusions
