    One more thing, cuttings usually rot. I've got a 50-50 success record with propagating these because the stem where it is cut from starts to rot and I can't seem to stop it. Great video, man, very thought provoking

    This is a very interesting video, love the sketch at the start! The effort 😂🎉! I studied biomedical sciences (focus on human diseases, not plants), and I have a wild suggestion. I wonder of people are having problems with their Thai rotting because of thorough decontamination. That might be a weird thought, I know, I’ll try to explain… our guts are lined with all sorts of microbiotes like bacteria, and we need them to be healthy. Sometimes when people get an infection and take antibiotics, they develop gut problems after. Some of the “good” bacteria that lived in the gut died because of the antibiotics, and now suddenly there is space on the gut wall for other bacteria to grow and multiply. Alright back to plants, what if people are getting rid of “good” microbiotic creatures by being really careful and decontaminating their Thai, but then bacteria from their surroundings just get on the plant because there is space now? I’m not sure if this could happen to plants the same way as it works with our guts though.

    • @Darenim
      @Darenim 9 месяцев назад +5

      (With the decontamination I mean people might sterilise the roots of the plantlet, so after the tissue culturing process is done. I do understand that the plant needs to be sterile during the tissue culturing)

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  9 месяцев назад +5

      I think this is a driving factor as well. I think that's why I don't have too many issues with my soil because there are honestly like 3 to 5 species of tiny mites/insects plus a plethora of other organisms that sorta keep the stuff balanced.

    This was such an interesting video. I’ve had my Thai con for a few weeks and it’s doing great. Nice healthy roots. I’m not someone who babies or hovers over their plants so maybe I can keep the pythium poofs at bay because of my sheer neglect with the lack of water.
    I think I kill the most plants, or at least make them weak and sickly by UNDERwatering then drenching those crusty dusty roots with to much water, really soaking all the soil. This seems to create rot very quickly. I wonder if people are being to cautious and not watering enough?

    • @TechplantChannel

    I've had issues with established Thai con and getting root rot. I believe the issue was the soil mix and over watering. While some roots were rotting, it was actively putting out new root and growth from a newer node.i noticed the roots when I was replanting. I'm guessing it's more finicky to water right, and it's more convenient to label it pythium than blame oneself for bad care. You might not have the over watering issue given the amount of light you blast your plants with

    • @Gee-xb7rt
      @Gee-xb7rt 9 месяцев назад

      Pythium could be responsible for root rot. i found some literature that said use at least 20% pine bark, but I haven't tried it yet, Pythium likes wet soil and it gets in the roots and goes up the stem and the plant just kind of collapses, i get it really bad in some Peperomia, i just lost a couple bringing them in for the winter.

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  9 месяцев назад +3

      pythium IS killing some of these plants for sure, this is just dispelling that idea that they have it inside of them from the very start because the mother plant had it when they started Tissue Culturing them

    • @partyhatkid9940
      @partyhatkid9940 9 месяцев назад

      Mine also put out new roots while others rotted! The leaves were wilting though, so the rot was definitely winning. I eventually cut mine up and propagated all the nodes in water. 100% sucess rate with regular tap water and a grow light!

The mother plant got bad root rot at one point, so I just snipped the whole plant up and all the cuttings from thrived too. Basically, I always thought Thais were very hardy because of this! I did not know others felt differently. Thanks for sharing :)

I also love your laissez faire attitude towards root rot or fungus. I think most of the time we are way too much of helicopter parents with our plants. Just we because we see a tiny bit of rot on some roots doesn’t mean we have to unpot, treat, trim and whatever else we do. Also what about sterilizing our mediums, this just proves that nature sort of takes its own course. My assumption is that this bin you have is full of good bacteria as well as bad bacteria, and the good won out in the end!!!

    Very good! You put a lot of work into this. Sometimes I think our expectations are what makes the difference. We can do everything wrong and expect the plant to do well, and it does. 😂 For my part, I try to use chunky enough soil that I can water more frequently. I’ve heard people have trouble with their Thai Cons needing more water than green Deliciosa. So I keep mine in chunky soil and I don’t let it dry out more than an inch or two. Seems to be thriving and just a few months after import (tiny baby) the roots are breaking out of the 4” pot.

Got it when it was about 8 inches tall and transferred it to leca and it ended up dying. It didn't transition well and it was obviously my fault! So imo it's usually human error. My two thai cons I have now (didn't deflask them, but they were about 3 inches tall) started in a aroid mix. I transferred them into fluval stratum, then stratum/leca, and eventually full leca in about a span of 3-4 months. Didn't lose either one doing a slow transition into leca. Got out of leca a few months ago just plopped them into coco coir and perlite mix and they have been doing better than ever 😁 All trial and error to see what works best for yourself!

    Yeah those videos "that guy" made towards yours - I found him smug and smarmy, like he was enjoying the chance to start drama where there wasn't. It seemed to me like he couldn't handle someone giving his videos even slightly negative criticism and wanted to shut you down for doing so. I think the point about thai cons "never getting cheaper" is a matter of perspective - on the consumer side it's certainly getting cheaper due to propagation. There are thai con mid cuts for 30$-50$ in plant groups. For someone ordering plants off a wholesaler list, sure it's going to be a little more expensive because the plant is still in demand so it will remain just a little more expensive than other plants on that list. As far as earlier generations of thai constellations being hardier, I know Kaylee Ellen has mentioned on her channel that the quality of thai constellations has declined over the years since she started buying and selling them. That's anecdotal but it's something.

      I'm going to try and get ahold of the older thai cons because I'm very curious about it as well. It will be fun to keep testing these and hear more peoples perspective on these plants

    I would love to try this. Where are you guys getting them? I got an albo cutting as a gift and it did great in water and lecca. I put it in a chuncky mix; Orchid mix and it started to brown. I had it first under a grow light. Giving it 6 hours of light per day. Then, when the brown began, I moved it to a north facing window. I would say it was mid October. After the move, I watered once, bottom watering. It died within two weeks. Sorry, just trying to put as much info as I can for diagnosing purpose 🙂 Oh, I used a tiny bit of Orchid food in the water when I bottom watered it..

      some is algae but it does come back to life as well and will grow green, if you want a lot, put some in a dish and make it wet, then put a clear lid on it and put it under strong lights, in a couple of months youll have real living sphagnum

    I have literallly never had a problem with Thai cons until this last one I bought. It’s sitting in the bag, half rotted. Not even unflasked yet. Like I’ve never had root rot trouble with them. I feel like the normal and albo are more dramatic than my gorgeous Thai cons. Only water them once a week, very bark heavy aroid mix.

    @TeresaWellsRevisited 9 месяцев назад

    I lost my first thai constellation to root rot. I was keeping it alongside another baby monstera (just a normie) and watering them at roughly the same cadence and I think it was just way too much water and way too little light for the thai constellation. I actually cut it back, rerooted it, and tried again. It was going fine until my housemate very helpfully watered it while I was gone.
    I have a second one I got a few months ago. It's under a skylight facing west-ish, and gets roughly half as much water as my other monstera. Absolutely zero problems. I've gotten 3-4 leaves out of it and absolutely no indications of disease, wilt, or stress.
    So my personal theory is that they want a lot less water than you think, and people are giving way too much, but that's just a theory.

    I have an Albo that is huge and doing great in a very chunky coco coir mix, and I decided to do essentially the same with my Thai Con and hope for the best. I had a small scare of root rot early on before repotting, which i caught because i saw no new growth for a while, but that was only some of the roots and so I decided to go with a clear cup to make it easy for me to monitor the root situation. Today i still have my baby thai doing great, it's pushing out new leaves and the roots are escaping the cup through the drainage holes lol. I was really scared that it would die, 50 euros is still a lot to me personally to spend on something only for it to die. I lost two rooted Albo cuttings before getting my more established plant. I'm now suspecting they got exposed to cold since those were gotten in the winter. The thai con has been pretty chill in comparison tbh 😂

    ok so I have 3 thai cons lol 2 small and 1 medium size. I had to reroot the 2 small ones bc I overwatered them and they got root rot. they're now planted together in leca and doing well. The medium size is doing great in a chunky mix I water about every week and a half. so for me it was 100% my fault I was too excited and kept watering it 😂😂😂
