Hello, I am a phd student and my research topic is about plant propagation and regeneration in in vitro culture. I just want to let you know that I got a lot of agony watching the scenes from @TechplantChannel and really loved your profund and calm response! I have two recommendations for you: first, you talked and linked a paper about meristem culture to remove the paraiste. That might indeed work but might be as well diffucult to perform. Another, easier method would be shoot regeneration from leaf or petiole explants, instead of adventitous shoot propagation. This might have an increased risk for somaclonal variation, but during my works I could get rid of annoying endophytic bacteria rather easy.
If you (and other planttubers) really want to know whats going on, I could forward you to my professor, who specialized in in vitro culture and endophytes. Finding out if Pythium is the cause would be a perfect topic to be analyzed in a bachelors thesis and this would cost you nothing but engagement.

When I bought my first tissue cultured Thai from you guys, you warned me that there was a risk it could die from root rot and you explained why that happens. You were honest with the information and knew there was a chance I wouldn't buy it - but you still told me! I am glad that I not only bought the plant, but that its still alive and thriving! Wow, what a great and informative response to such a chaotic situation 😂 honestly I feel like there’s *a lot* of misinformation about plants due to ignorance and attributing intention/intuition as scientific facts. For yeeeeears I struggled to keep plants alive following bad advice of people who were also likely not coming from a place of science and research… very much because I was never interested in doing much research on my own 😂 it’s boring, I’ll be honest I just want the good end result 😂
Anyway- thanks again for all the great info, it really is cool getting these botany micro lessons that are so easy to watch. I really appreciate the honest approach you take to discussing plants and their strengths, weaknesses and needs. It’s definitely made me a better plant parent and a happier customer- I’ll always be happy to pay a premium for this kind of end user support and clarification for the plants I’m interested in growing. It’s why I personally keep buying albo borsigiana and not the Thai con which I know I’m not fully ready for yet- but looking forward to one day when I’m more confident in trouble shooting more advanced plant problems. If anything- I feel like bringing up these nuances helps people make more ethical, informed decisions. So confusing why anyone would want to shut that down, but I am certainly not here to yuck anyone’s yum- just a big fan of the fancy aroids!

I think I watched both of these videos. I didn’t come away thinking, “drama,”more like…plants are complicated and none of us know it all. You guys are just doing your best, educating us with the knowledge you’ve personally come across or observed first hand. Some people will agree with what you say, others won’t. And that’s okay. Nothing but love for both channels ❤
The thing is, he's speaking facts. Using critical judgement. While the other guy is just spewing personal opinions based on value judgement. I don't know about you but I don't have "nothing but love for both..." sides because I pick a side. I pick those who speak facts and are honest enough to admit their own errors, as he does because let's face it nobody loves liars. Careful where you shower your love at - only the good deserve to be loved. Just saying.

You have one of the most informative Channel for plant parents. I have a Thai too since Winter 2021-2022. This plant are so healthy. I can do what i want, nothing can kill this plant and their babys. Ok it is not a creme brulee, had a half moon leaf. That was really cool. I love this plant. They don't lost one leaf since i buy it. That is so sad so many have problems with their plant.
Both your responses to this speaks volumes of the type of people you are - in my opinion. The difference in the way you approach the topics are polar opposites too, lol. One mocks everything and one presents facts. I mean for crying out loud. I'm semi newbie (2 year plant mama) came across a lot of the plant youtubers with the root rot thai's. Kaylee Ellen and Fern and watched what they were doing with theirs to fix the issues. I love the content from these creates and recently found you through suggested video awhile back. I did purchase a Thai awhile back knowing the possibility of root rot. So I knew what to look for and how to deal with the situation if it arises. I ended up cutting mine when she got a few sets of leaves propagated her top cutting so I have 2 incase one doesn't make it. One outside, one inside so far they are still doing good and pushing out new leaves. I know that root rot is a thing and with the plant being highly variegated it does have a higher probability of it to have the issues. I like knowing the what ifs if it's prone to a certain ailments so I can make better purchases. Some of the easier said plants I can't keep alive so I'm pleasantly surprised mine have made it. I enjoy your content and I'm glad you were suggested for me to like your channel, can't wait for your next video !

Sample size is important!
While personal anecdotes about an individual plant can still be helpful, when we are talking about a pattern, the person who has grown hundreds, if not thousands of these plants is going to be the one best able to speak to the matter.

Hahaha, I saw both your videos organically. My main issue was he made a lot of assumptions on the maturity of the plant people are struggling with. I have purchased two plants larger then the plant in his video. I was cautious with watering bc they were expensive plants and one immediately rotted away, the current one is on its way out. Originally I heard this species was indestructible, so I was confused why they developed and succumbed to root rot and stem rot. The plants literally melted away 😂 Meanwhile, a tiny thai starter I bought is still vibing.
But both the current older plant and the baby have developed thripps and I have never gotten thripps before. Anyways, tl:dr his video felt like it was a lot of personal opinions and assumption on what people are doing wrong 🧐

Thank you for the great video and the research you put into it! I actually bought my first Thai from your shop and it's doing very well. I trust your expertise a lot. I believe you said in one video that once a Thai reaches a certain size, you can be sure it's not going to rot since it passed that stage where most of the Thai die.

Screw haters. All I know is I bought a monstera Thai Con, I am a lazy plant parent, and it has never gotten root because I applied what I learned from your past videos.
There's something fun about seeing typically calm plantubers get passionate and openly express their concerns and knowledge. Some how I find this back and forth very entertaining, and also gaining perspectives from both sides. I have personally lost a couple of Thai-con to root rot, so your research and explanation will easily convince me, but also as a Techplant's follower, I also appreciate the taking no BS attitude from Matt. Thank you both for taking time to make the videos! @TechplantChannel
Maybe the biggest problem is culture... they are Epiphytes perhaps they should be grown drier and with more air flow.
I mainly grow orchids and to avoid the rot you all get with this plant I would just grow them with fans and water them more then grow them drier.
Pythium/disease requires stagnant moisture.

10000% Agree with you. My Thai TC I got 2 months ago died b/c of root rot in very chunky just like your plants. These new Thai TC are definitely a lot weaker. Also you know your shit!! thanks for doing this video.

I had a feeling that despite presenting the video in a very ‘surface level’ info way that there was much more knowledge at hand. Former cannabis grower myself (as well as yearly veggie gardens and many many houseplants) and would consider myself a plant/botany nerd. Also can state anecdotally that plants infected with pythium have a large chance of any cuttings being subject to similar infection, even months and months down the line and taken from a seemingly healthy part of the plant originally infected. I love your content and the more recent mini deep dives on specific plants 🤗 I tend to prefer the technical and scientific aspects and would love to see that rather than the more surface level “beginner” facts, but also understand that not every viewer is going to have the background or basis to be able to clearly understand the extra nerdy stuff, or the desire to 🤓😂
I appreciate you sharing your background and experiences too! Good to know you’ve also seen Pythium be transferred to cuttings. But without the hard studies, we have nothing more than our experiences to corroborate this. Thanks for taking the time to share a thoughtful comment 🙌

Another great video. I got and lost my first thai to root rot in 2020. My current one has done great and is even in passive hydro, purchased a few years ago. Idk what they are saying, these have come way down in price. I've seen them for as low as $20, how much cheaper are we expecting?

yeah i commented in the other thai con video and was surprised about the supposed tendency for root rot. i live in singapore. a hot, humid tropical island where months in the year there's heavy monsoon rain. in non-rainy months, i still water them heavily and my plants have survived for years without any issues.
maybe it's specific strain of thai con that the american growers bred from that are more susceptible? mine is from a thai grower.
yeah same as in Australia and we have never have root rot pandemic like USA so this is a USA centric issue

💚Sooo… I happened to see that video on the day it was released, and couldn’t help but notice specific quotes mentioned, and even the exact title from a video on this channel. It came off as somewhat personal, and surprisingly unscientific. The fact that the video began by dismissing the notion that references or citations weren’t actually necessary, and wouldn’t be forthcoming told me all I needed to know! The counterpoints making the claim that root rot being systemic was incorrect or just hype, and that others in the space were likely telling falsehoods in order to peddle plant wares was baseless. I kept waiting for facts based counterpoints to be delivered, vice emoting over the subject in a somewhat immature manner, but it never came to fruition. Unsure what the purpose of the video was at all, besides a personal rant.

I grow my monstera in leca. My albo grows happily into the reservoir. My thai, any roots that grow into the reservoir immediately rot off. My albos reservoir is full of roots; and my thais is completely empty of roots. The thai is larger and older than the albo
Absolutely prefer the transparency, I love finicky plants. But prefer disclosure that it needs or is likely to fall to issues pest growing humidity. It’s gorgeous but v2 is a easily killable genetic change from the very hardy first go round

I saw that video even though I don't follow that guy. I think I must watch a lot of videos about Thai Con, lol. I didn't even finish watching because that guy came off like a flat earther trying to deny science because he thinks something else. It's fine to have a different opinion, a lot of science is differing opinions, but his was just like "I dunno I grew one or two plants so my experience must be all there is". Like a parent whose kids survived school so saying that school shootings don't happen.

I was expecting this video to be kind of silly but it changed my mind on this topic. Thanks for sharing this info. It totally makes sense that if desirable, noticeable mutations can occur in tissue culture, so can undesirable issues like rot susceptibility. Also once you said cannabis industry your knowledge made total sense. Professional cannabis growers really have horticulture down to a science.
I actually have a local seller that does a TON of TC sales ( her brother lives in Asia and she gets insane deals apparently). She actually has 3 monstera babies ranging from $20-$40. I’m debating getting one but this video scared me lol. But for $20 it’s not a huge risk

There is alot of drama about plants, plant community and more. I do like to let people know accurate information. I've had trouble with green Monstera deliciosa, I'm on my fourth one. Not liking growth pattern, and not sure if I love it. I gave myself a deadline. I have finally found some Thai Constellations. The price is a bit high, I found an albo, bit it is crazy expensive. This is why I put a deadline in. I do check info on stuff.

The issue itself was interesting to me. I would like a Thai but it is waaay down on my plish list because I'm not paying that kind of money for it. I'll just wait and wait and I know from you and others that I will end up with an over cultured plant. So be it. It's not at the top of my list anyway. Luxurians, Red Secret, regular Crystallinum, I really want luxurians radicans, Florida Ghost, these are at the top of my list and again I'm not paying anything near expensive for them either. I'll wait and wait and my time will come and I'll be dancing with joy. But, what I really wanted to say to you is about tissue culture. I've been listening. And I wonder, what do you think if I use my own idea of sterilizing tissue from a plant to create more with my own similar home sterilizers and home made food to feed the plant once out of sterilization? There is a video that the plant tech person uploaded sometime last year, dissing, small and local growers and praising ecuagenera. That video totally rub me the wrong way when he spent the video hating on and trash talking growers they were smaller than ecuagenera. That enough for me to realize he’s not a good person.

There’s nothing here that rings untrue or problematic except comments discounting conclusions based in perceived motivations.
The seller is outing a plant he sells for being less than ideal.
The content creator is blaming people for mistakes rather than accepting these plants that are now widely available may be less than ideal (prone to rot).
People are processing the information provided.
Conclusions vary.
I didn’t buy the original Thai Con because it was expensive.
I bought one recently because I like them and the price was reasonable.
If it rots, I’ll assume it’s not a strong plant because at this point, my approach works well for similar plants and there’s information indicating problems exist.
If I was just starting out, I would likely assume it was my fault if my plant rotted.
In other words, it’s an interesting conversation worth having as we take a casual approach towards learning about plants.

Yeah I got 4 tc plantlets and everyone died of root rot the moment they got out of the bag. Never had that issue before. Truly think the plant isn’t worth it anymore until they fix the issue with root rot.
Might be just me, but the background music was incredibly distracting and made it difficult for me to hear and focus on what you were saying.
thankful that mine hasnt root rotted, had it for about 1.5 years now, from a pretty small plant, its now about 50cm
This is the best 🤣 RUclips plant drama lol! That guy is nuts. Thais are definitely in their own zone and it was a real learning curve to take care of them properly vs any other plant in my house.
I have noticed a slight decrease in price, plants that were over $100 are now around $70-80 where I live and my bf and I just got an amazing steal, $55 for an established little Thai with a 3rd leaf coming up 😍 only sad thing is she drowned that hoe before selling it and it definitely didn't need water so now it's on watch 😅 our older thai rotted and we had to cut it back so much we only had 1/4 leaves left and almost lost it. But thanks to you and Kill This Plant, it's doing great and the newest leaf is bigger than my hand with beautiful verigation!
I got my Thai Constellation coming from Thailand and in 2018 pre pandemic. It's healthy. Its been neglected and still producing beautiful variegation.

Just found your channel as i recently received a baby thai con by accident with a bunch of other plants id actually ordered, and while im a relatively good plant parent, i actually havent had any monsteras yet! My new thai con being an accidental freebie has actually made me more desperate to make sure she survives and thrives. Fellow plantstans: is it excessive to buy a huge microscope and inspect every damn cell in my little thai con for pesky oospores?
Hahahahahaa the microscope would be fun! But you should be alright! Just don’t overwater, and use lots of drainage in the medium
Omg is true cuz i bougth 5 thai during the years and all been rot root and i ended up buying one that it was not tc and that one thrive had it for 2 yrs and she almost 5 feet long and yes tc thai no metter how u care the will die and i been a experice growing since before the pandemic
