Literature is one of the loveliest parts of my life, which unfortunately for the past year almost I've been quite detached from. I've been disappointed with my current uni, the professors (the environment here is just toxic)...and often even feel out of touch with the texts we do in class. You're one of the biggest reasons why I, despite all the negatives, still continue to remind myself why I love literature so much and why I'm pursuing the degree that I'm pursuing. The moment I'm done reading any book, I rush to your channel to see if there's anything you've said about it. Thank you for your videos. You've been such a comforting presence in my life. Wishing you all the happiness. ❤️
Check out Pango books if you're in the US. I'm sure Britain has an equivalent. Basically people sell their used books and if you sell used books there you can earn enough to buy other peoples.
DUDE. This won't work for everyone, and it def won't have everything on ur tbr, but if you have access to a library, find their shelf of books they sell (mine was hidden in plain sight, i walked past it day after day and didn't realize until they had a sale that the books were there for us to buy! So def ask your librarian), the books are DIRT CHEAP and you can find some STEALS. Mine sell paperbacks for 50¢ (£0.43) and hardbacks for $1 (£0.86), and have constant sales when they have too many and need to get rid of some (like 10 books for 10¢/£0.086, kind of sale) - I've found _Tipping Point_ by Malcolm Gladwell, _On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous_ by Ocean Vuong, _The Bell Jar_ by Sylvia Plath, etc. they have some actually popular books, and I live in the middle of nowhere haha Sorry this was so long, I just tell everyone I can bc I've saved sm money and actually gotten some good titles in amazing shape, and want everyone else to have this opportunity 😂
Well he said he thrifts a lot, buys second hand, AND a lot of these are probably business expenses, maybe even sent by publishers, stuff like that. Although I am NOT saying it all wasn't pretty damn expensive, it most likely was. 😅
@@gdaym8y that’s so awesome! My library does a sale a couple times a year, but it’s not a regular thing for them. But at least once a month they put books out front for free :) usually nothing I’m interested in but I got a new copy of The Night Circus for free.
honestly, your videos really do give me so so much serotonin like your vibes are immaculate!! esp with you being like you're gonna arrange your tbr according to ehat you own and then more books arrive at your door as they should ✨️✨️
I read Swimming in the Dark this summer and it was absolutely amazing ! As someone who loves historical fiction (and studies history), I was very interested in learning more about the Soviet regime in Poland. I also loved the fact that the two main characters have very different point of views on the dictatorship and the different ways in which they both try to survive in such an unfair environment. This book was an absolute delight as much as it could be heart breaking at times (since it is based on real events) but it’s definitely a must read for me. (Plus I was very proud to see that the author attended the same university as me, which was quite surprising)
ooh I recently read Swimming in the Dark and I thought it was such an interesting book! The German title (translated into English) is "One doesn't forget how to swim" and somehow that title is even prettier than Swimming in the Dark. Although I always get it confused with a book called "In water were weightless", which is a *chef`s kiss* of a title
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow was probably my favorite book of the year. I had debating buying it, but then Jimmy Fallon picked it for his book club and the price plummeted on Amazon, so I grabbed it up. (I got the feeling Fallon never read it tho). Bunny was good and bizarre. I’m all in for hidden society/hidden underworlds/down the rabbit hole books. Wasn’t what I I’d expected from the blurb, but still good. BTW, if you do enjoy Tomorrow, you may like Rabbits by Terry Miles.
Swimming in the Dark is wonderful, such a beautiful story. If you haven't read it read Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, you get more from Swimming that way as it's a central motif to the book. If you liked Call Me By Your Name, you'll love this (also if you do, read Lie with Me by Besson)
ohh nooo, i’m not ready for that tiktok-video! the love hypothesis is literally my favorite book but i so know you are not going to like it, esp if you don’t like fake dating 😩😩 i’m not ready for my illusion to be shattered
I love your videos so much they have impacted me so positively , because of you I have decided to try and get into Durham university I have only just went into year nine . You have helped me decide what I want to do with my life x
swimming in the dark is one of my favourite books ever! it's written so tenderly and with so much love in a way that i can't even really put into words. i also really loved the way it wasn't just a love story in a difficult situation but how the author really picked up on the political situation at that time and dives deep into the issues and the effect they had on everyone. a masterpiece id say.
Im so excited for you to read Bunny!! Its one of my favorite books, ever. Im also looking forward to your thoughts/reviews on the books w/ unhinged themes, a lot of them are on my wishlist and i want to know if theyre worth the read 😆
A certain hunger is absolutely insane and incredible. I could not stop reading it and have had the urge to reread since I finished, honestly one of my favourite books
slow days, fast company is amazing!! hope you enjoy it! i read it before reading black swans which felt more like an evolution of her work. interested to see how you'll get on w/ slow days having read black swans first. acts of service is also a v fun one!!
Ahhhh I just immediately purchased tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow. I love Gabrielle Zevin. Did not realise she had written another book! Really excited to read it. The storied life of A. J. Fikry and elsewhere are also really good
Just finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, can't wait to hear what you think! Unfortunately, I found it to be a bit disappointing, and I was quite surprised, as the reviews are stellar.
I loved that Jack didn't know anything about A Certain Hunger before he read the synopsis. 😂 Another booktuber I watch read it and I've debated reading it but Jack's realtime reaction to it was everything.
I like the fact that you read such different books than I read it's nice to hear what else is out there in literature. If I didn't have so many physical books still to read and, on my tablet, I would try some of these books.
7:47 - 12:26 whoa what a streak??? and then Bunny, A Certain Hunger and Pizza Girl too? starting to think Jack is going through my TBR bc these are all up there 🤨🤨🤨
Ngl listening to you read the synopsis of The Love Hypothesis (my favorite romance book), made me absolutely giddy with excitement. I have no clue what you’ll think about it, but that story has a chokehold on my heart.
I'm currently reading 'Slough House' and it's one of best books I've read this year. It's so anti-James Bond, it's amazing. Agents digging through dirt. Literally. What happens to the agents who f up, before they become 007? Well, they end up in Slough House. And it's as grim as it sounds.
I love your videos! Thanks for sharing! What would I choose to read first? Pizza Girl! Bc it's actually online TBR and I own it just haven't gotten around to it yet, but if I had your stack of books in front of me l'd probably read the one called A Certain Hunger bc it sounds crazy!
i saw acts of service in a bookstore recently and i'd never heard of it but i was so intrigued 👀👀 so i'd start there but i've also been dying to read our wives under the sea and now i'm not gonna have the time to read it for a while so i'm gonna have to enjoy it vicariously through you
just narrowed down which of my tbr i was going to buy based on if you'd read & reviewed it yet. watched this video and 70% of these books were the books i'd decided to buy next time. this has really thrown me off, going to edit my basket again now 😭
Jack i am begging you to read Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. I have a feeling you would absolutely love it, it's so lyrical and *vibes only* but also almost philosophical in the way it describes cities and feelings and travel.
ahh so many amazing sounding books! have you read the sorrows of young werther by goethe? if you like sad endings then that's the book for you! i recommend the One World Classics edition translated by bayard quincy morgan. i have bpd and i fully believe that it's the first bpd novel lmao, i think acts of desperation will resonate with me for the same reason 💀 so excited to read our wives under the sea, have it out from the library atm! salt slow by the same author was honestly incredible, similar vibes to kirsty logan who i also adore ^-^
If you haven’t already, you have to read lessons in chemistry by bonnie garmus! It is amazing; it’s funny, emotional & feminist. My favourite book of the year
So I'm watching Jack's recommendation video and a book by an author with a Polish name comes up which peaks my interest (I'm Polish too), I start looking up the book and the author, and the Wikipedia page claims that the author cites Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin as a major influence in his writing.... which is such a coincidence since Giovanni's Room arrived at my door 2 days ago!! Isn't life just so fun!?
not Jack unhauling books then IMMEDIATELY receiving a bunch of new books 💀
Me tho
that was my ecact same thought too 😀
Jack gives off such chaotic bookworm energy

Jack saying the US cover of A Certain Hunger is a woman holding fruit, when it’s literally a human heart, has me rolling for some reason
