I have never experienced burning jealousy until I saw that thumbnail. Jack better add a couple more locks to his doors cause holy shit that pile is making me consider premeditated robbery.
Anne of green gables was the first book that I ever read that made me think maybe a book doesn’t need dragons in it to be amazing 😂 I read it again as an adult and loved it even more, it’s just one of those stories that last. Edit: there is also an audiobook version read by Rachel McAdams that I highly recommend as well. Edit again: I can accept people skipping the book but y’all can’t skip the TV series Anne with an E. Bring your tissues for those first couple episodes though.
Mine wouldn’t fit on a table. I decided a long time ago that the real point of having a book collection is not actually to read them all. It’s to be continuously excited about the books I want to read.
"Their Eyes Were Watching God" is suuuuuuuuuuch a good book! I read it in high school and it's especially fun listening to an audio while reading along cuz it's written in a southern black dialect. It really puts you in the setting and it's so interesting
ishiguro's nocturnes is one of the best short story collections ive read i think you'll really like them !! it's sad in a quiet and painful way which is very up your alley
Please give Joyce a chance! People always start with Ulysses and get intimidated, but The Dubliners and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man are both MUCH more readable and worth the time. Plus, once you get used to his style, Ulysses doesn’t seem quite so daunting (sidebar: it is still daunting though)
We have always lived in the castle is a MUST READ!! It’s one of the best books I’ve read in terms of description, visuals and creating a distinct environment that you as the reader feel like you’re standing in its remarkable.
I think American Dirt could make for a really interesting video given the controversy around it - it's not the best book, but it certainly opened up a conversation about diversity in publishing and the importance of own-voices storytelling (also love seeing the amount of Latine literature you've picked up recently - cannot recommend One Hundred Years of Solitude enough!)
The Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society is one of my favourite books! its got a slightly different plot and vibe than the film and its descriptions and characterisations of people is really interesting, especially when she is on Guernsey. I definitely recommend you read it, even if you end up not liking it that much :)
I listened to the "Pickwick Papers" as a BBC radio drama here on RUclips, and it was fantastic. They had a bunch of sound effects, music, and many voice actors which made the entire experience very immersive. The humor and tone came through brilliantly. I would absolutely recommend you to give it a try too.

i dont think the hate u give will really provide any new perspective, it's quite ya (very important for its time and target demographic but I think from the discussions of summer 2020 and since it's fallen behind other works)
Uuuh you've definitly got to read The Dictionary of Lost Words soon. It's probably my favorite read of the year. So beautifully written and informative
It's such a relief to see someone else with a huge TBR pile. I'm in the process of finally weeding out books I'm no longer interested in, but I can't seem to stop the trips to barnes and noble 🤣
Watching this video took me back to 2017, when I was just starting my essentialism journey. I gave away, gifted, donated, or sold a lot of the books I had purchased as a coping mechanism. After graduating, I realized that reading WAS essential for me and the person I do want to be. Despite my renewed love of reading, I have come to know that I do not like stocking up on books if I could not actually get to them immediately. So, I keep a list of all the books I do want to read - in digital, audio, or physical. I want to read them, savor them, and, then, give them to people who would love to have them. I only keep what I can absolutely read and get to because looking at them collecting dust makes me feel like I'm stunting their full potential (v Marie Kondo I guess). Anyway, thank you for being my constant companion in my online bookhunts. I love taking your recommendations and scouring online second hand shops for them. Much love and many blessingds!
snowflower and the secret fan is one of my all time favorites. It's the story of a girl in old china who is getting her feet binded and it's the story of that painfull experience weaved in with her growing up and her friendship that is growing with this other girl. It's kinda of a coming of age story but you also learn about this process which is so touching.
Loved, loved, loved the video! So many books that I want to get from those piles, because of your speaking about them in the past. Continue shining, Jacky!
The Dictionary of Lost Words should absolutely be a priority. I bought it on a whim and I absolutely devoured it. It was one of the first books I read and enjoyed outside my fantasy comfort genre!

I can highly recommend Detransition, Baby!! It's such an interesting look at identity, family, parenthood, society, discrimination and the trans community but also privilege. For example, and not too spoil too much, while race doesn't play a huge part in the novel there's an interesting passage about the ignorance of the white trans woman protagonist to the oppression of BIPOC people. She thinks as a trans woman, there is no one more discriminated than her, which she is called out on by another protagonist who is half Chinese but cis gender and Peters handles it beautifully. She shows that even those who are minorities and face discrimination can still discriminate others or turn a blind eye.
I'd love to hear you talk more about translated fiction! I also really enjoyed your video where you read Croation authors and it made realize that I haven't really read anything by authors from my own country except for the stuff they made me read in school, which is really sad lol

I listened to every minute over a month and it was so enjoyable, highly recommend both the book and the format. 2. We've always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson Enjoy!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Grapes of Wrath are two of my favourite classics ever, they felt so impactful and life altering to me when I read them in highschool. Also I read Down and Out in Paris and London last year and loved it way more than I thought I would! George Orwell's insight and writing are just incredible
Would love a video where you talked about the books you read - or were supposed to read but didn't - for your university degree. I have been contemplating about different courses, and English Literature/Language is definitely an interest!
i'm so happy to see dominicana on your list. it was a 5/5 for me (maybe because i'm domican too lol), but the book is amazing. i don't think a book has ever brought out so many overwhelming emotions from me! it's a great book.
'When you call my name' is probably one of my favorite books of the year! It somehow was everything I hoped for and nothing like I expected at the same time! So much love for that one! I also read 'the view was exhausting' and kinda hated it... Great title tho
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is my favorite book of all time. I read it for a high school essay, and that’s been YEARS ago, and I have only read 1 book that has come close to topping it. The movie is really good, too. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was my fav of 2021, and it’s perfect for the Autumn season!
my recommendations: -the discomfort of evening - weird and fucked up and the author is also a poet so the writing is beautiful. -anne of green gables - i think sometimes people have a misconception of this book that it's a bit sickly sweet but i promise it's not.
You should definitely read 'Do Not Say We Have Nothing'! I loved that book so much and desperately wanted to hug so many of the characters. The narrator's voice/vibe (idk how to describe it) is kind of similar to the one in Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah (if you haven't read this, I recommend this one too).
I’d actually like to see your take on Ready Player One. It’s one of those books that everyone loves and I literally DESPISED almost the entire time I was reading it and I can’t reconcile that.

That is by far THE MOST RELATABLE thing I've seen from you!. I feel much better now Thank you. At least, '' Jack has a pile like mine too'' can be a consolation.😅😂😊
I've read a shortened version of "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo" for school and I really loved it, it was like four years ago so I don't remember everything. If you have some books that you can't assemble under one theme for a video maybe you should put them in a random generator and start a series of videos where you randomly generated three books or sth like that before reading and reviewing them so your physical tbr go down a little. Btw : your pronunciation of papillon was really good !
@@jmsl910 I still have my copy in a drawer, but sadly it's a french version, if you still want the information about it, I'll be happy to give them to you
I picked up Still Life expecting absolutely nothing in particular. 100 pages in, I fell in love with the characters and all of their little quirks, reading about their lives was just fascinating. I read it slow just so I got to spend more time with the characters, when I finished reading I found myself wishing there were 1000 more pages just so I could escape into their whimsical little lives for a bit longer. Deff recommend!
Jack you're going to LOVE Peach Blossom Spring!! It is a very you book (from what I gather of your reading tastes). Also, Anne of Green Gables is the perfect thing to read when you need a pick me up, Anne Shirley will surely wrap you in a warm embrace (Anne of Green Gables is also a six book series, but you really only need to read the first one to enjoy the story. I recommend at least getting to book three though).
Haroun and the Sea of stories is beautiful. Read the background on it, as it is his way of telling his son that he loves him while Rushdie was in hiding. Also, my husband heard you comment about Gravity’s Rainbow and immediately said, “I’ve read it twice.” So, I live with a snob
The "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" slander ... I can't! The movie got nowhere near the depth of the book and I love that it's written in an epistolary style.
Agreed!! I've read that book a few times and love it every time. Though I HATED the movie!!!! The actors weren't right for the characters and just... no.
Omggg I was saving the movie to watvh later because I really enjoyed the book and I was sooo disappointed. Honestly, I would recommend the book to anyone so I'm sad Jack decided to drop it :*
i really recommend the Paper Palace it's got me out of a reading slump! i really enjoyed it but i should tell you, for some reason nobody talks about the fact that it has a large section on SA and they just describe it as a cute beach read, which part of it is, but just a trigger warning for anyone thinking about reading it
Glad you mentioned about snobbish uni’s, my first try at a literature course made me drop out because the university was so snobby it made me depressed. Now studying it again at a much chiller uni and enjoying it
CU alum here! I got so excited seeing you wearing the sweater, I thought at first we were going to get a vlog of you there. Love your videos! They got me back into reading after a long hiatus.
3:02 After this I have this overwhelming urge to read it. Most importantly I do not have big book fear so… I guess I know what I’m buying and reading this month!
It's extremely good, but you might want to read The Crying Of Lot 49 first, its only 130 pages in comparison to GR's 800 or so. You might want to buy a readers companion book too, it's called "the Ulysses of the second half of the 20th century" for a reason lol
Looking forward to see which ones you decide to read as several titles I also have on my physical tbr. Have you ever considered doing a tbr to zero challenge? I've watched several booktubers do these and it's really exciting to watch. I've been too intimidated to try it myself so far but I'm trying to push myself to do it, if for no other reason than to finally read the books I bought that I've wanted to read, get rid of the ones that I thought I would like but didn't "tickle my pickle", and make room for more books in the future. Great video, and I can't wait for the next!
Yeah The Sympathiser is great, there’s a lot of talk about representation in a western influenced society and how that sort of impacts our ideals and morals. Read it last year, and it is one of my favourite books to this day.
Please read Gone with the wind, it is wonderful, yes it is a big book but so worth it. Also feeling better about my to be read list, thank you lol. Love your book reviews.
I'm currently listening to "Peach Blossom Spring" and I'm loving it! A great historical novel about a part of Chinese history I knew very little about :)
A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite books (no, studying it didn't actually ruin my enjoyment of it), but have I read any of Dickens's other books? No.
I read Still Life earlier this year and it was absolutely one of the best books I've ever read! The prose....*chef's kiss*. I highly recommend the audiobook as well because it's narrated by the author herself and it's very well done. It's definitely not plot heavy and is incredibly atmospheric just as a heads-up, but you fall in love with the characters so much because it spans decades of their lives and they're all beautifully fleshed out. It is really such a joyful book that made me both laugh and cry.
Before watching this video I was feeling bad about having 3 other books I haven't finished whilst starting another new one. After watching your video, I'm cured!
Currently reading 'Breathless' and really enjoying it! The setting is picturesque and immersive and the characters are intriguing. Would recommend if you're ever doing a video about thrillers :) 'A Long Way Down' is great too, particularly if you're ever after a quick read (I got through it in a day, which is impressive considering I'm usually more of a booksnail than a bookworm). Would recommend if you enjoyed Fredrik Backman's 'Anxious People' as it's got a similar balance of humour and feels :)
Do NOT read The Maidens… I thought I would love it- and I did until the end… the ending made me feel physically ill… I love ya too much to put you through that Jack- toss it. I still gave it like a 3 stars because I loved the first part and I thought I would enjoy it so much. I did and it’s hard for a book/story to shock me but alas… the ending- horrible.

You're making me feel good about my tbr stack😅 anyways can't wait for the next few videos in this 'series'! Watching your videos is always nice 💕
26:35.. Family of Liars is actually the prequel to We Were Liars.. which I need to reread.
Excited to read them both ❤️❤️
I've read a shortened version of "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo" for school and I really loved it, it was like four years ago so I don't remember everything.
If you have some books that you can't assemble under one theme for a video maybe you should put them in a random generator and start a series of videos where you randomly generated three books or sth like that before reading and reviewing them so your physical tbr go down a little.
Btw : your pronunciation of papillon was really good !
me too! I read the count of monte cristo for a book report and loved it so much! gives me Les Miserables vibes too
do you remember anything about who abridged it?
@@Sofia-vw9dl Oh I still have to read Les Miserables because for now, I've just read some snippets of it!
@@jmsl910 I still have my copy in a drawer, but sadly it's a french version, if you still want the information about it, I'll be happy to give them to you
I agree with this idea.
This is the video I needed Jack. I identify with this 🤣😭
I picked up Still Life expecting absolutely nothing in particular.
The actors weren't right for the characters and just... no.
Honestly this video made me want to read the book again!
Omggg I was saving the movie to watvh later because I really enjoyed the book and I was sooo disappointed. Honestly, I would recommend the book to anyone so I'm sad Jack decided to drop it :*
Jack, you are spoiling us with so many videos!! 🥹
Extremely loud and incredibly close is SO SO SO GOOD and innovative and inventive and has a lot of great themes
i really recommend the Paper Palace it's got me out of a reading slump! i really enjoyed it but i should tell you, for some reason nobody talks about the fact that it has a large section on SA and they just describe it as a cute beach read, which part of it is, but just a trigger warning for anyone thinking about reading it
Just started listening to the audiobook and I adore the writing! Thanks for highlighting potentially difficult content 🧡
I feel better for my TBR now. :D How about a read along for Don Quijote? Or the count of monte cristo! That would be fun.
Was I watching your tik toks when the notification that you posted came up? Yes.
Great video, and I can't wait for the next!
your videos are always a mood.
Watching this video on the train back from Italy. Perfect timing!
I'm currently listening to "Peach Blossom Spring" and I'm loving it! A great historical novel about a part of Chinese history I knew very little about :)
Just putting down my vote for Grapes of Wrath, I freaking love that book ☺️
Video Idea: Reading the 5 tbr books at the BOTTOM of my list.
good idea!
Small island is brilliant, we used it for my live theatre drama mock and it’s honestly one of the best plays I’ve ever seen
just opened RUclips to find a cozy video to watch while I eat my lunch and lo and behold you just uploaded a minute ago!
update just spilled half a plate of scrambled egg onto my sofa.. going well so far
A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite books (no, studying it didn't actually ruin my enjoyment of it), but have I read any of Dickens's other books? No.
Lol literally every book on my unread pile “I was so convinced I was going to read this when I bought it…. But here we are….”
“my enemy … Charles Dickens” 😂
"let's start by acknowledging the elephant in the room"
the hoodie was absolutely not the elephant in the room jack
Before watching this video I was feeling bad about having 3 other books I haven't finished whilst starting another new one. After watching your video, I'm cured!
Currently reading 'Breathless' and really enjoying it! The setting is picturesque and immersive and the characters are intriguing. Would recommend if you're ever doing a video about thrillers :)
'A Long Way Down' is great too, particularly if you're ever after a quick read (I got through it in a day, which is impressive considering I'm usually more of a booksnail than a bookworm). Would recommend if you enjoyed Fredrik Backman's 'Anxious People' as it's got a similar balance of humour and feels :)
Creatures of Passage is absolutely mesmering magical realism with prose that's so skillfully and poetically written. Hoping to see you read it soon!!
The Power is a fantastic book, ignore whoever is giving it bad reviews lol
Yesssss I loved it too!
Now I’m afraid🥲
The Rosie project and the two books that follow are my favourite books of all time. Definitely recommend them!
Listening to someone I admire joke about intellectual snobbery was really comforting! Thank you 😊
