The virgin suicides is one of those few pieces of litterature with a movie adaptation that is better than the book itself in my opinion. Its just too stunning
disagree. that movie fell into the trap of perpetuating what the book was trying to critique. people lust after the book for its manic pixie dream girl aesthetics and that’s it’s legacy.
@@jeepersfred6796 i totally agree with you about that but its just that the artistic side of the movie touched my heart deeply as someone who loves visual arts . I guess i prefer the way that the story is told by the movie . Its just my opinion 😁
I have been in a really bad place mentally lately and i just wanted to thank you because your videos offer me a small escape from life that is much needed so: thank you 💕
I LOVED anxious people ❤ !!!! The little twists , the comfort this book provides is amazing (maybe the fact that I read it outside in my garden when the sun was rising or setting helped with the experience but either way……) If anyone knows something else like it plz recommend……
Atonement by Ian McEwan is definitely up your alley. It's such a beautiful story about love, betrayal and the role of narration and narrators in people's lives. Don't look it up too much before reading it, if you ever read it. There's a huge twist and it'll leave you speechless and heartbroken.
I'm so surprised by the book haul. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on these books that are a lot more in my lane. Especially There, There, Anxious People, Mexican Gothic, The Trial, and The Road. Happy reading!
"The Trial" is a RIDE. I read it immediately after The Metamorphosis, and then watched The Trial film, as well. It's genuinely not a bad adaptation, really did capture that typical Kafka vibe; at once both unsettling and familiar.
Virgin suicides - I recommend listening to the music when you come to that certain point in the book where it has a track listing. Really set the mood even more.
1. i have not read tell me lies HOWEVER the hulu show was filmed at my university (before i transferred) and holy shit. it drove me insane. filming crews on a small campus + closing of buildings = making me want to boycott the show based on annoyance alone lmfao 2. im currently reading the road and it is so good. i love the writing and it is curing my reading slump! 3. i really enjoyed the audiobooks for anxious people and cultish, i hope you like the books as much as me!!
Wow, some of these books are on my May TBR. What a coincidence. Just bought a copy of "Lessons" and am going to get "Virgin Suicides" from the library.
Uuuu, nice bookhaul! I'd really love to know your opinion of The Road, if it's really as good as everyone says it is. I always approach very hyped books with lots of caution... I feel the story in The Road has the shock factor, but I'm more curious about the writing. If you read it soon, do let us know. 😊
Hey Jack! If you enjoy There There you’ll LOVE Ceremony by Leslie Silko. It’s one of my favorite books of all time! The writing style takes a little getting used to but you won’t want to put it down! It just the most heartbreaking yet hopeful story
virgin suicides is incredible! absolutely formative book and film for me and all my (female) friends aged 16/17, really captures the feeling of being a teenage girl and the tragedy of your youth/femininity being idolised to the point of dehumanisation and isolation. the decision to narrate the boys instead of the girls is pure genius. really hope you love it, or at least see why it is so special to so many women!!
Just read Invisible Man and I'll be looking forward to your reaction. I loved There There, but many people didn't. As for Native American, I love Richard Wagamase and especially Medicine Walk and Indian Horse & they will both break your heart.
Definitely read tell me lies, Mexican gothic and anxious people first... it's been on my tbr for so long and would love to hear what you think of them!
Reading Lessons now, enjoying it. Intested in your thoughts on Mexican Gothic. Imho it's bonkers. Her next book Velvet was the Night much better read. Anxious People is quite farcical, not Backman's best. Beartown is wonderful.
I read The Road in high school, and it has stuck with me ever since. There is such a disturbing scene in that book, and it is written so well that it’s extremely bone-chilling. I would say read that one first.
You inspired me to get There There. I sampled the audio version and have high hopes. I can't wait to see what you think of Mexican Gothic...I have had it on my shelf for a long time but am nervous to dive in. Have fun!
So many of these sound amazing! But I am excited to hear what you think about Mexican Gothic because I...thought it was terrible haha. 😅 The Road was an intense ride though. (And also, since I know you love translated literature, I also recommend Mister N by Najwa Barakat; All Your Children, Scattered by Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse; and Seven Empty Houses by Samanta Schweblin. And also Chinatown by Thuan. 😊
Definitely would love to hear about Anxious People because I also loved A Man Called Ove, but honestly think you should start with The Road because I’d be very curious your thoughts on it!
Honestly just feeling very affirmed because a lot of these have been on my tbr for YEARS and I haven’t gotten around to them, but if Jack doesn’t keep up with all the releases when they’re new I DON’T HAVE TO EITHER.
I would say read Invisible Man, The road or Anxious people first - I am planning to read these books so your opinion would be useful 😁 But at the same time I am curious what would you think of The Trial! Kafka's writing has got something special to me 😊
Love your content Jack! do you ever listen to audiobooks? we share classic literature on an almost weekly basis. Hoping to branch out into foreign language audiobooks - I know you're learning French!!
THE VIRGIN SUICIDES!!! one of the first modern classics i read and i LOVED IT, one of my top favorite books to this day and seeing u now own it gives me so much serotonin😭 you have to let us know what you think of it i would love to hear ur thoughts!!
I looooved The Road, which was why I was looking forward to The Passenger by McCarthy. But unfortunately I could absolutely not connect with the writing style in this context. In The Road it makes totally sense to me in terms of "meditation of devastation", but certainly is something one has to settle in for.
Jack’s buying books like there’s no tomorrow. I approve of you as a role model.
SURELY you must have a certified library by now Jack 🤔
He should count them for us!!
Eagerly awaiting for this video …
Yes! We want the final count!n
right? he wasn't that far off
i think he does!! if i'm not mistaken he made a tiktok about it.
I loved Anxious People. Fredrik Backman is so good at getting you to care about absurd characters, and his dialogue is always top notch.
that's so interesting! anxious people is actually my least favourite book of his, have you read other works of his?

The Road is absolutely stunning, I read it in one day. It made me cry like no other book has. 😭
ANXIOUS PEOPLE IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER JACK OH MY GOSH I READ IT RANDOMLY WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AND IM STILL OBSESSED
Fun Fact: Franz Kafka used to write the minutes of the meeting in his office and his colleagues would love to read it.

They’re Going To Love You was phenomenal! I bought it because I loved the cover as well.
