My partner had a continuous issue with tonsillitis and it didn't stop till he had them out which unfortunately took a long time because his NHS doctor kept saying it wasn't necessary. Anyway, hope you get some good medical advice and the problem goes away soon. Really great selection of books. 📚 I loved Dept of Speculation and Assembly. Hope you've enjoyed Ruth Ozeki's novel more than I did. 😅
YES JACK! It’s amazing seeing you pick up a book by a Somali writer (The fortune men) Our country has so many unheard voices and with such a rich history seeing more Somali writers come into the lime light is absolutely amazing. If you do enjoy it I highly recommend reading “bless the daughter raised by a voice in her head” by Warsan Shire. It’s a poetry collection documenting youth in the Somali diaspora and the first generation of migrants struggling to fit into the UK and losing touch with their culture in the arms of the west. It’s also a major ode to girlhood and the awkwardness women in the diaspora face with their parents and how they don’t cross boundaries into personal lives leaving girls to discover who they are through a skewed sense of love and trials and tribulations
Concerning my daughter is one of my top books of this year. at one point i just stopped the book and heaved and sobbed in my dorm room. hope you like it too
I really enjoyed Concerning My Daughter too! I have so many thoughts on it, but I’ll try not to unload here or I’ll be typing all day. I found it was a bit hard to read due to a lack of quotation marks, but I think this works really well for the novel as a whole as I feel like it represents how insular the protagonist is - I mean I did spend the entire novel flipping between hating and pitying the protagonist but I think this is more realistic than many novels as it shows how complex people are. Would love to hear Jack’s thoughts on it (even if he hates it lol) - it’s a bit of a divisive read, but one I loved.
“Nadja” is such a hypnotic read Also, I am really happy to see Ukrainian books in English translation. “Lucky breaks” should be a great read, it’s a documentation of russian crimes’ influence on womanhood, the displacement and seeking safety, with author’s photographs as well!

Brandi Carlile is a queer Americana singer whose memoir Broken Horses is a perfect audiobook experience. Each chapter relates a different time in her life, centred around how these moments became songs, and then at the end of the chapter she sings the song in question. Hi Jack! Just kids is a really good book! But i really do agree with you that it’s really an acquired taste. I think it’s also because a lot of people who read Patti smith are fans of her who listen to her music. I think if you read it a few more times, i think that’s where the hype comes from. It took me a while to really enjoy just kids but once i read it more than once, i really loved it.
I’m indeed one of those people saying Just Kids is one of their favourite books :p In my reading experience it was especially a memoir about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe, and to me it felt like a love letter to him and their friendship, less about her career, although it of course intermingles. I also thought the writing was amazing, and it even left me in tears at the end! And because of the book i started to appreciate her music even more. But that’s my opinion. ;)
long time subscriber first time commenter here! just a very minor comment, the Korean language doesn't necessarily have an accented syllable, but usually when people say "tteokpokki", its the first syllable "tteok" that's put on the emphasis rather than the second syllable :) also on that note, Ji-young from "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" is pronounced "Jee-Young" not "Jai-Young". I feel like such a snobby ass trying correct it but thought it might be helpful hahah looking forward to your reviews of the books!
I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle, though the effect it had on me was kinda late. It was my first exposure to classic horror and thank goodness it was memorable
Dept of Speculation is so weird and heartbreaking. It's impossible to describe; it precedes the short sentence style of "No One Is Talking About This", but feels more like a series of profound intrusive thoughts than the endless and addictive scroll of social media

I'll be interested to see your reaction to Cold Enough for Snow, I just finished it. I was drawn to it because I recently read After Story by Larissa Behrendt which is also about a mother and daughter traveling together. Anyway these two books despite their seeming similarities are quite different.
05:42 ARGH I read a similar blurb a couple days ago on Goodreads and forgot the name of the book! Basically it's an author's unabridged diary notes from when they found out that their mother has Alzheimer's until the very end of that journey, and it's kind of just snippets and not really edited, but I saw a lot of good reviews. Talks about loss and relationships and acceptance and more. (edit: I think it was "I Remain in Darkness" by Annie Ernaux) Also I love Chimamanda and hearing her talk about her father was just so heartbreaking. I think she lost him right at the beginning of the pandemic.. Haven't read this book, but I saw a video where she was talking about it on Instagram back then
Oh wow, I've read Grownups! I was also attracted to the cover ;) I liked the book a lot, it was a new perspective, I rarely see books about single women in their 30s.
I loved The New Me! Weird and kind of existential (dread) with an unlikeable main character. I hated Pure Color, but Motherhood by the same author is one of my favorites. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Feel better!

the bag link, Jack, the link!!!!!
(edit: I think it was "I Remain in Darkness" by Annie Ernaux)
Also I love Chimamanda and hearing her talk about her father was just so heartbreaking. I think she lost him right at the beginning of the pandemic.. Haven't read this book, but I saw a video where she was talking about it on Instagram back then
i love your video as always! what would you recommend for starting with murakami? :)
i actually read woman in the purple skirt earlier this year and thought it was aggressively average. it wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t very memorable.
Omg Sputnik sweetheart is so good
Also. I read Sally Rooney after I heard how much you loved it. And I cannot thank you enough. Normal People has a special place in my heart now.
I pressed this right away because I loooove your book hauls! ❤️ I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these books to add more to my tbr!!
We have always lived in the castle is one of my all time favs 🤍
Okay but now I need the link for that bag
Oh wow, I've read Grownups! I was also attracted to the cover ;) I liked the book a lot, it was a new perspective, I rarely see books about single women in their 30s.
I loved The New Me! Weird and kind of existential (dread) with an unlikeable main character.
I hated Pure Color, but Motherhood by the same author is one of my favorites. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Feel better!
ASSEMBLY IS SO GOOD. you're going to LOVE it. I believe.
