Take care of yourself, Jack. Take the time to do things for you and not because you feel obligated to others. Your fans are happiest when they know you’re happy
Books: Butter by Asako Yuzuki translated by Polly Barton (2:40) Intermezzo by Sally Rooney (5:20) The Passion According to G.H. by Clarice Lispector translated by Idra Novey (8:51) Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood (10:43) The Husbands by Holly Gramazio (11:54) Betty by Tiffany McDaniel (13:36) Time of the Flies by Claudia Piñeiro translated by Frances Riddle (14:32)
Just read "Hidden Manifestation" by Oliver Mercer and I can’t believe it’s so underrated. Methods in this book are next level, it needs more attention!
The space looks so beautiful!! I think that "being the best version of ourselves" requires the insight that you already exhibit ... beyond that, you can know that, because we are living with ourselves all the time, we are not always the most objective observers. You sound like a most (emotionally) intelligent person - so kind, considerate, respectful, and creative - please don't worry about anything! There is no pressure - the world becomes a better place when kindness is introduced to her days - you are already doing that (offering people such encouraging content)! Your videos have helped so many of us for a long time - and you deserve to know that! Considering these facts, you can know, as well, that when you feel good doing something, this simultaneously indicates that you are offering your best. The very best wishes and thank you always.
Jack, I’m so glad you’re reading Clarice Lispector! I’m Brazilian, and she’s one of my favorite authors. Don’t worry, her books are a bit challenging and require focus and attention, even in Portuguese. My favorite book of hers is An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures. It tells a love story that ultimately leads the character on a journey of self-discovery and understanding of her inner world. If you’re looking for another book of hers to read, this one is absolutely fantastic!
pardon my french here, but I FUCKING LOVE THE NEW BOOKSHELVES there's something about the colour and atmosphere thats so appealing, don't get me wrong I loved how full and home-y the others were but these are next level cozy 😭
I was in a reading slump for years…after reading 1000’s of books in my lifetime I just found everything predictable. I got myself out of it by reading with more intention. I’ve started annotating and reading up to 4 books at the same time (usually always listening to an audiobook also, in the car, gym, dishes, etc., something I never liked). I’ve resparked my interest and with your help, have found authors I love like Rooney and Orange that make me think in new ways. Sometimes a slump is necessary, particularly when it’s your work. I think your audio is fine btw and love the new space.
happy belated birthday, jack! being born in october as well, i like to see these three little months before the end of the calendar year as a time for me to reset, make plans and try to set up new habits for the new year. i try to spend less time online, i call my siblings, i journal a lot, and i try to figure out what i want to do with this new year i'm given (that includes reading lists of course hehehe)
For a spookier read, you could try Zyranna Zateli's "At Twilight They Return." Zateli is one of the great Greek writers, and in this seminal work, she blends the morbid, the mythical, and the sexual beautifully through a family saga set in 1900s Macedonia. A slow burn that's very rewarding.
As a Brazilian, Clarice Lispector is known for being "not for every one" lol. I personaly Love and highly recomend her short stories, but could never finish any of her novels, including the one you are reading 🙃. So if anyone wants to read her work but feels intimidated, go for her short stories! They are all incredible and also a little easier hehe
Oh my god I can’t wait for you to read Betty!!!!!! An absolute favorite. The opening line of the first chapter lives rent free in my head. “A girl comes of age against the knife. She must learn to bear its blade. To be cut. To bleed. To scar over and still, somehow, be beautiful and with good enough knees to take the sponge to the kitchen floor every Saturday.”
Happy belated birthday, Jack! 🎉 The new book shelves look amazing! ❤😍 Enjoy the books, I hope they help you get out of the slump. Most of these books are also already on my (ever expanding) TBR, except for the Clarice Lispector one. I own Butter, have put Intermezzo on hold at my library and am planning to buy Stoneyard Devotional sometime soon, as it's not available at my library.
Love your new bookshelves!!! If you’re looking to go into more contemporary fantasy, with some horror elements, I would recommend Kelly Andrew, with works such as The Whispering Dark, or Your Blood, My Bones.
Jack, I don't know if you've addressed this before, but I'd (and I'm guessing many others) love to know how you manage to read so many books in a month! I'm sure many of us would find your tips very useful 😊. Maybe, tell us how you organise your time, at what time of the day you prefer to read, for how long, maybe you set a daily goal? Help us! Lol.
I can guarantee that 'Betty' will make you cry. I went in totally blind and I was not prepared. Such beautiful and lyrical writing but my god, it was so devastatingly sad 😭
Happy belated birthday Jack. Twenty-six is still young and you've obviously been living life and compiling experiences, so allow me to repeat a trite yet true bit of advice. "Never regret growing older. It's a privilege denied to many."
Well first off... HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK! I hope you have a wonderful new year, and a great new trip around the sun. We love our internet resident librarian. :) Second, fun video! I thought the setting was your new place, but I wasn't sure. It looks great!
I really enjoyed Husbands. Even though it was light and fun, it ended up having a pretty profound message by the end. With the premise it obviously sounds really silly but it slowly progresses to the Kafkaesque. I'm really looking forward to hearing what you think about it!
Happy Birthday for the other day, Jack! Hope it was a great day for you. Congratulations on the TV show as well! That’s awesome 😎 I’m currently reading Butter and it is definitely a slow burner so far, but I am enjoying it. I have added several of these to my reading pile; like you, I also enjoy a book that can move me to tears, so have added ‘Betty’. Take care, mate. Peace and Love from Australia 🙏 ❤
A sad but beautiful book you might like is How High We Go In The Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu. This book is heart wrenching and gorgeous! One of my favorites
if you need a horror recommendation! Family business by Jonathan Sims is fantastic. It has the most biting portrayal of grief and loneliness and the boredom and numbness that comes with it. It explores the fear of forgetting your loved ones as a form of fear of letting go. Breezed through it in a single sitting
I think it’s okay to step away from reading for a while without feeling like it’s a slump or something negative. Though I understand the pressure is higher with Booktubers
Do you have a Birthday tradition that's related to books? My birthday is also in October and I started this thing a few years ago that I gift myself a book for my birthday every year. But there are rules to it: - I have to buy it in October - I have to buy it from a local bookshop - It has to be a book that I have never heard of (or at least wasn't planning on buying at some point) - It must be the first book in the bookshop that just feels like a book I want to read - I'm not allowed to read anything about the book (not even the blurb) or even open it before I buy it - I have to finish reading the book before my next birthday It's like a surprise book, but I get to judge it only by the cover 😅
So early that there's a typo in the title 😂 I've had some amazing reads this year, no reading slump yet, but not trying to jinx it, knock on wood haha. Currently reading Vicious by V. E. Schwab, my first of her books. It's pretty solid so far!
Jack if that helps you just know that I finally started reading more books because of you! And almost 80% of the books I read are your recommendations 🫶🏻 thank you for all the effort you put in it and happy belated birthday too 🎉 you're turning into a even more beautiful person I wish you all the best 💝
Stoneyard Devotional - I live near where it's set and I think Charlotte Wood is in town for the local writer's festival @CBRwritersfestival. Happy Reading Jack 😀
I'm Brazilian, and I'm so happy to know you're reading Clarice! But trust me, she does not abide by the structure of Portuguese. Haha. So, if the English text seems slightly awkward, it's a sign that the translator did a good job since that's how we feel when we read the original.
Not that I know much about content creation, but I wouldn’t mind watching you venture into more categories if you ever get into a reading slump and want to try something new!
I still bet Jack read more in his September reading 'slump' than I have in the past 6 years
Haha I was thinking the same thing 😅
Same ! 😂
Literallyy 😭😭 I’ve read a whole 6 books this YEAR so I could bet he read more last month than i have this year at LEAST
same, lol. but what makes me feel better is that this is his job so reading is what he does most of the time
@@Yikesitscj literally a dream job though 😭
end of an era...start of a new one. Bookshelves look amazing
Jack expanded his bookshelves and immediately needs to expand again 😂
ikr..its already so packed like he needs a new one next week 😂
the wardrobe between the books is giving ✨magical portal inside ✨
Narnia vibes!
This!
woah... and i thought your last bookshelves were hawt. This bookshelf is as aesthetic as the quaint glow of a candle.
Love the new bookshelves!!
Take care of yourself, Jack. Take the time to do things for you and not because you feel obligated to others. Your fans are happiest when they know you’re happy

THE SHELVES. He was right, he needs the extensions for the top. Shelves to the ceiling would be a vibe.
definitely gonna need a bookshelf tour !!!
Intermezzo is my favourite Sally Rooney so far, it feels like shes fully come into her style
Just read "Hidden Manifestation" by Oliver Mercer and I can’t believe it’s so underrated. Methods in this book are next level, it needs more attention!
love seeing you reading clarice lispector! as a brazilian, it’s super cool to see such a brilliant author being celebrated internationally
Oh dude, that Clarice Lispector book was such an incredible reading experience
She is a master of her craft, its mind-blowing

This is such a sweet and eloquent comment, and I completely agree! 🫶🏻
This is an awesome comment! 🩷
This is such a beautiful, kind and encouraging comment ❤
"I'm on a reading slump" [proceeds to read Clarice Lispector] man I wish to get to that level
Jack, I’m so glad you’re reading Clarice Lispector! I’m Brazilian, and she’s one of my favorite authors. Aprendizagem ou O Livro dos Prazeres é meu preferido também! 🤍 Fiquei curiosa pra ler Clarice em inglês agora hahaha

a TV show??? OMG I CANT WAIT
SALLY ROONEY STAN HEREE
i am halfway through intermezzo and its wrenching me heart🌟😭
It is so refreshing to hear that even you get into reading slumps. I would love to hear more about how you overcome them.
I was in a reading slump for years…after reading 1000’s of books in my lifetime I just found everything predictable. I got myself out of it by reading with more intention. This September was definitely the king of reading slump for me too, but Sally Rooney I believe will be the queen of getting us back to reading ❤❤❤❤

Can I say WOW!? The shelves are beautiful!!!! I love the wooden look and you were right about the dark colour!!!
Jack it’s like you knew I was in a slump too, perfect timing

I just love this excitement and nervousness regarding Intermezzo! I saw your hands shaking but I bet it's because of the respect and love to Sally :D
The darker collor looks amazing! Definitely the right bookshelve choice
the new bookshelves are amazinggg, love the color!!!
omgomg I love the darker wood on the shelves!!
Oh my god I can’t wait for you to read Betty!!!!!! An absolute favorite. The opening line of the first chapter lives rent free in my head.
“A girl comes of age against the knife. She must learn to bear its blade. To be cut. To bleed. To scar over and still, somehow, be beautiful and with good enough knees to take the sponge to the kitchen floor every Saturday.”
you just convinced me to read it! 🙇🏼♀️
Amazing book!!
i LOVE the new bookshelves! you definitely made the right decision on the color choice
Happy Birthday!
I have been retired from teaching for 9 years and I still consider September the start of a new year!
Are we all just in a reading slump this October?
Y e s
Me too. I've DNF'd so much. It's rough.
These bookshelves are a DREAM it looks so good
your bookshelves look stunning 📙📘🥬!!! happy birthday jack 🎂 !!!!
clarice lispector's syntax feels challenging to Brazilian readers as well! I love her work
Jack don't burn yourself out! You can take breaks, that's ok
Ali Smith is such a delight! I'm currently reading How To Be Both and savoring the knowledge that I've got a new favorite on my hands.

We need a bookshop tour!! They look so good🥰 congrats on the new place
Happy belated birthday, Jack! 🎉 The new book shelves look amazing! ❤😍 Enjoy the books, I hope they help you get out of the slump. Belated Happy Birthday Jack! Hope you had the happiest day
I can guarantee that 'Betty' will make you cry.

So many books and so little time! Best wishes and happy reading.

Happy Birthday for the other day, Jack! Hope it was a great day for you. Congratulations on the TV show as well! That’s awesome 😎

I hope you had a great day :)
You speak so beautifully. I’m so excited to see your thoughts on intermezzo! No rush though. Love how you said reading is a sacred experience.

BOY Your so young its not fair! Happy Birthday!
Looks like you’re getting settled in and have organized your bookshelves. They look lovely.
I'm Brazilian, and I'm so happy to know you're reading Clarice! But trust me, she does not abide by the structure of Portuguese. Haha. So, if the English text seems slightly awkward, it's a sign that the translator did a good job since that's how we feel when we read the original.
Can't wait for your intermezzo review!
Happy Birthday - even if I am late. Love your new shelves. Hope you have enough space to expand.
that bookcase is beautiful
As a Brazilian fan of Jack I’m soooooo happy he is reading Lispector!!!!
You should read The Other Valley, very unique premise and I’m super curious what you think!
I didn't realize the new bookshelf from the last video. Love it and also the wide lens.
Husbands was ridiculous. Read it while sick with Covid and perfect read to be absorbed and entertained while not feeling well. I loved it
Not that I know much about content creation, but I wouldn’t mind watching you venture into more categories if you ever get into a reading slump and want to try something new!
i can't believe no one on youtube is talking about magnetic aura from Talesio
Happy birthday Jack, good seeing you again :)
