- „Salome“ von Richard Strauss in einer Verfilmung unter Götz Friedrich (1974) mit Bernd Weikl als Jochanaan.
Mit Teresa Stratas (Salome), Astrid Varnay (Herodias), Hans Beirer (Herodes)
Wiener Philharmoniker, Dirigent: Karl Böhm
© Deutsche Grammophon 1974
TERESA STRATAS was a GREAT SALOME...whew!!!
There will never be another who realized the role like Stratas.
She will always be the definitive Salome
This is a filmed recording, the voices pre-recorded, here obviously lip-syncing. Yes, Stratas is terrific as Salome but on film only. She never sang the role on stage. The voice was way too small to handle the heavy orchestration in live performance.
@@philipc67She never sang it on the stage??
@@philipc67 Wow!
This is the best version of the opera that I can imagine.
Karajan aussi en 1977
the most brilliant performance ever
I have seen many productions of SALOME on film and in OPERA HOUSES..this is the best PRODUCTION I have ever seen .....however ,my all time favourite SALOME was MARIA EWING at ROH. ....RIP..
Entièrement raison
Bravo hans beirer! Singing so good at that age.
For Mozart and Strauss Opera’s there is no better than Karl Böhm.
Hai perfettamente ragione
Si Karajan
Just watched for the first time in years. I had forgotten how good this is.
Bien parlé
Old but gold !
Oui déjà ancien, mais sublime version
I remember seeing this on British TV in the late 70s - it completely blew me away. I had no idea opera could be like this! How strange to think that within a few years I would have worked with several of the cast members. Looking back on this now - some 43 years later - I can certainly poke some holes in some of the production choices and some of the singing, but this is still an absolutely FANTASTIC version of one of my favourite operas. Danke, Herr Weikl!
Très bien parlé bravo
It's apparent Karl Böhm had studied the opera with Strauss.
BTW, in the opening, the clarinet plays C-sharp scale, not an arpeggio.
The best version ever, by far!
Opera straordinaria ; ottimi cantanti ; superba orchestra ; direttore bravissimo .
Vielen herzlichen Dank.
Savour Teresa Stratas in this performance, I think that it is the only recording of her in the role.
She never sang it on stage, but here the engineers made all things possible for this nymphet. Richard Strauss woulda loved, LOVED it.
Oui elle est toujours merveilleuse
Recently got the movie. What an excellent demonstration of the art of woman.
Très juste
This Opera is dynamite. Danke.
Bien parlé
Bravo!
Superb!
1:28:49 ❤❤ this and the following minute are so beautiful. Strauss mastery.
Honestly! Best moment of the whole thing for me! 🥹
Yes, the passage you have cited is beautiful in a worthless, kitschy way, like the soundtrack of a third-rate Hollywood sword-and-sandal epic of the 1950s. It is a drag queen's distorted view of Salome. The truly beautiful (because of its dramatic truth) passage is 1:35:47 to the end of the opera. Here is Salome's horror at having had her initial sexual experience with a severed human head, mixed with intense sorrow that the man she so desired is dead through her, and perverted satisfaction of her unwitting necrophilia. Strauss perfectly characterises the unfortunate girl's feelings at this moment through music of the utmost disgust and voluptuousness. Beautiful, indeed.
Here is an audio & visual performance that according to some is the only rival to the legendary Welitsch version. Not having been born yet for that one I cannot make a total comparison but standing alone Stratas certainly has done a memorable piece of work.
Très juste
Götz Friedrich 👍 Die Tänzerin, Marta Graham Stil angelehnt
❤❤
59:26 the dance
I once had this very version on laserdisc. Ms Stratas looks and behaves as close as possible here to the "oversexed teenager" Salome is supposed to be, which curiously is usually sung by dramatic sopranos.

You'll have to ask the iconoclast Strauss. (Hint)
Not an expert whom you requested, but IMOpinion Herod's role does not merit a helden nor even a revered featured Strauss tenor. because Iokanaan has to be the one steady mighty voice --even nobler than the wimpy king Herod who is not kingly at all. dissipated, lecherous--pushed around by his stepdaughter. His tenor isn't the awesome tenor of Rosenkavalier or Bacchus in Ariadne. He's a jumpy, light, unsympathetic lesser tenor.
Why its opera and not biopic??
