Oh my goodness, I never thought about the bottom touching the top 🤣. I always roll it up like that, but now I will fold up it like you did, and then roll. Thanks for the idea!
I just love you, friend. And I do call you friend because…. I just purchased a Manduka Pro lite mat at a hot yoga studio 3 days ago. I have the product sleeve in front of me and for $75 USD on sale- I wanted to investigate. So I went to Manduks’s website and asked why they don’t suggest to roll up a mat as you did in this video…. I just posted a message to them one hour ago. 😮 I have been rolling my mat this way for 20 years, gone to teacher training school and have NEVER seen anyone roll up in this manner. ☺️I am thrilled right now. And now, I go to RUclips and search “how to roll a mat” and you, my twin, pop up. Thank you. I’ve been rolling a thick Lululemon this way like I said for 20 years and …. The bottom is flaking with black particles. It has NOT thank goodness ruined the top of the mat. So, Fold in half and roll. I roll the top of the mat to the outside-- but I like your idea too. Thank you!
Germaphobes UNITE!! ✌️💪💫😂 I LOVE that you contacted our friends at Manduka to let them know 😂😂 …also, I’m impressed you tried it with your lulu mat and it’s still in good condition. My Liforme unfortunately has a permanent crease in it now (and the lulu and liforme mats are quite similar material). Well… whatever it takes to keep you comfy while practising! ❤️
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching! 🙌 (if you’re folding it in half first be careful you don’t crease your mat - depending what material it’s made of!)
But waow!! Thk u so much! I use yoga mat at the studio that they have but havent used my home manduka pro matt since it curls. Welcome Hatha home yoga. Beautiful fold! 🙏🏼
Hello, I have a Manduka PRO Mat. Yoga mat cleanliness is highly important to me for numerous reasons. I wipe the mat each time after I complete my daily practice using the Manduka mat spray, then keep it unrolled to let the natural sunlight completely dry the mat. But my issue has been tiny specs of foreign materials keep getting stuck in the fine ridges on the mat. Maybe it's just an aesthetic hang up on my part, but seeing those tiny specs on my otherwise clean mat drives my crazy. But I think I found a solution. I have a wide brush that is used for cleaning felt hats of similar specs. I brush the mate carefully, then apply the mat cleaner. This worked very well the first time, except a few brush hairs fell off of the brush. Perhaps this is because the Manduka mat is very tacky, and literally ripped the hairs from the brush. Hopefully this will not continue to be a problem. As far as rolling the mat, I did not realize how thick the PRO mat is. I would recommend keeping it for home use only, and getting a PROlite or eKOsuperlite model for studio classes. I have borrowed part of your roll up technique for my PRO Mat. After it is clean AND dry, I fold it in half (the 1st step of your roll up technique), but I do not roll it. This allows me to reclaim some space in my room, where space is kind of limited. This way, I do not walk on the mat and risk tracking specs on it. The mat may not look "pretty" stored this way, but I think this will serve me well, and keep from driving me crazy since it should not accumulate these mysterious specs. Strange enough, my $17 generic mat I've had for 10+ years never experienced these issues. But it has lost a few chunks of material over the years. Again, a mystery 😄
Me neither, Xane! But I had a few comments on my previous videos, so I thought I'd do this one... and I love the responses I've been getting from it. HA!
I was looking for the pro's and con's for the Manduka Travel but you made me choose again for the Pro lite as I have one at home. Thank you for your reviews!
Sweet! And yeah it can be tempting to want “all the things” (I understand! 🙋🏻♀️) but sometimes it’s great when what you need is already what you have 🤗
My Manduka pro is only 4 days old and the crease shows up. I return to rolling up the regular way, as I roll I wipe the bottom of the mat also to ensure cleanliness. Thank you for your video
Oh no! Sorry to hear that… hopefully the crease edges its way back to normal again over time. (Also my mat is more than a decade old so have no idea if the later mats are made differently)… but appreciate you letting me know. 🙌
Great tip, I always roll my mat like the wrong one 😅 After i watched your mat review vdo, i decided to get Manduka Pro with yogitoes Fortunately, the main distributor in Thailand provided 30% discount for medical personnel during COVID19 outbreak😃 I did salt treatment two times for hasten break-in period and i just stick on it like a frog on the tree (as logo) 🥰
That's awesome you got a well-deserved discount. Thank you for all that you're doing for the people in Thailand. 🙏...and HAHAHA, love that image of you sticking to the mat. Glad it worked for you! PS. there's no real "right" or "wrong"... just "cleaner" or "dirtier" mat, really. haha. 😜

Hahaha. That’s a good idea. Some friends call me JT so maybe that’s a snappier name for it. The JT roll. Lol. Well done on your 30-day yoga challenge, exciting!! Yoga with Adriene’s challenges are always great and so well structured... I’ve got some 15-minute and 20-minute yoga playlists on my channel page too if you need some inspiration. GO, SANDY! 💪💪💪
I've been leaving my mat unrolled. I notice I am more motivated to practice when it is sitting right infront of me. How do you feel about just leaving it unrolled?
I totally agree with you! I have a home practice mat that’s often unrolled so when I’m working from home, I can get on it a few times a day to stretch out. It definitely helps as a visual reminder to move! Well done, you!
Hi Jaime! As someone extremely obsessed with cleanliness, I loved this video. After your review of the manduka mats, I also ended up buying my hopefully forever mat, a prolite. Thank you!! Buttttt just wanted to say that after folding it both these two ways just one time for a bit (minutes) it was already creased. So maybe they changed something. Either way, the mat should serve us, we shouldnt serve the mat right? Ps. How relaxing this background music, love your vídeos!
Heyyyy Rita! Appreciate you watching and supporting my channel! And oh no! I’m sorry to hear about the creasing on your mat… and yes it’s quite possible something‘s changed in the manufacturing process (my PROlite is at least a decade old by now so it’s a long time ago). Have you tried laying out your mat for a bit? I usually have to do that after unpacking my mat and the creases uncrease… I love your mindset though - the mat serves us not the other way around. Sometimes it’s hard when it comes to the stuff we own isn’t it? Thanks for this reminder! ❤️
That’s so cool! I’ve not heard of the Koru mat, but will look into it now. And so funny that they’ve even patented the “folding of a mat”... what will they think of next? 😂❤️
I just got my first manduka prolite but i always fold my Jade harmony mats like that! Never any creasing at all! Hoping I love my manduka prolite just as much as my Jade mats!
Hey Morgan! Congrats on your new purchase! My guy has the Jade Harmony and he loves it. And if you like the Jade, you might actually prefer the feel of the eKO series since those are Manduka's natural rubber mats which are a similar material to the Jade (I don't like the grippy, rubbery feel of it, it's why I don't actually like the Jade)... If you don't enjoy the grip and texture of ithe PROlite then know that it's maybe coz of the different material/ texture (and instead of writing off Manduka, perhaps you could consider trying the eKOlite.) BUUUUUT! Hopefully you like your PROlite! Keen to hear what you think of it!
Only if I don’t use the mat for a long time! But rolling up any mat in any direction would usually do this. With the Manduka, I find the curled ends flatten out pretty quickly. Thanks for watching!
I love cleanliness as well and I was breaking my head over the hygiene, this is a lifesaver! I have also been interested in doing yoga outside but I don’t know where to start. I want to keep my mat clean and also practice on a nice manageable surface. I’ve thought about using a towel with a yoga mat, just a towel, or a foldable exercise mat. I also recently came across a Manduka product that is a portable wooden board, which honestly seemed like the perfect idea but it’s quite heavy and I would be worried about travelling far distances and it absorbing water. Do you have any suggestions for practicing outside?
You could try and find a boardwalk or something similar depending where you are, I’d say try and find the flattest surface you can… but ultimately part of being outside/ in nature is that no surface is “perfect”, so work with that as part of your yoga practice. It can be wonderfully freeing. :)
@@jaimetan oh I totally agree with that! Would you just suggest bringing and practicing on a mat, like laying it on the grass, or is there a better way to keep it clean
@@8jpg I know your comment is from a year ago but i just bring a towel or blanket to lay under my mat when I do yoga outside then i just throw the towel/blanket in the wash or keep it in my trunk just for that.

Hello Jaime! I am glad to find you here on RUclips when I was searching for which mat to buy. Thank you for your informative and sincere videos! I have a Manduka PRO and I really do not want to keep on buying yoga mat cleaners. I want to be sustainable so I am reading a lot of information on Internet. If I 50-50 mix vinegar with water and add a little tea tree oil, will this harm my yoga mat? Could you please recommend me a sustainable way?
Hello Elif! I don’t know about the long-term effects of vinegar and tea tree oil on your mat but I know they can be quite abrasive/ strong. I wash my mat frequently with soap and water in the shower and I can say after more than a decade of doing this, both my PRO and PROlite mats are both fine… so you could also stick to good old soap and water! 🤷🏻♀️
This has always grossed me out as well, to the point that I wash the top and bottom as I'm rolling which is time consuming and slightly embarrassing. Thanks !!
Ha! I feel you! But if you’re washing as you’re rolling, doesn’t it get wet and trapped up inside a rolled mat? (Or maybe I’m misunderstanding what you mean...)

Hey Ganes! When I travel and have the mat packed folded flat for hours in my suitcase, there are crease lines too. But then I unpack it and lay it flat for a few hours and it springs back to shape, the crease lines disappear. So try leaving yours flat for a few hours and see if this happens too?
I think if you’re really tall, a longer mat might feel nice - but if you’re taking your mat to a studio, bear in mind many studios these days have marked out where on the floors the mats should go (so they’re lined up evenly to have as many people within safe distance from each other)…. And if your mat is longer than a standard mat, that might become awkward with you cutting into other people’s space. Something to be mindful of I guess, in case you don’t wanna be “that guy”. 😬 The longer mat also = much heavier than the already heavy standard mat. I guess it’s weighing up if all these cons are worth it for the extra length. I’d only get the long if I REALLY need the extra length. Have you found regular yoga mats too short? If so - it might be worth it for you even after weighing all the above up…

From one anal person to another. I really appreciate that you have tried something 'outside the box'. I am going to try and see how it goes. Do you have any suggestions on a better way to use the Manduka Go Move Yoga Mat Carrier, Adjustable Strap? It is beautiful and durable, but it does not lock into place and is so slippery that it allows my mat to unroll WAY too easily. It drives me crazy! Please help!
Hahaha, let me know how your "fold and roll" goes! About the Go Move Carrier... I have one too but to be honest, I have the same problem. You kinda need to angle the mat and strap at the same angle you'd have it when it's on, before you put it on... but even then it's hit and miss. I think the issue is that the Go Move strap material is too thin and isn't really supportive of thicker mats. It works fine on my ultra thin travel mat, but definitely not on the PRO. I've got different brands' carrier straps that are similar but made of really thick cotton, and those tend to hold the thicker PRO mats in place much better, without shifting and sliding around. So unfortunately in this case, I think the product itself isn't that great for thicker/ heavier mats (caveat: this is just one person's experience only!)
@@jaimetan yeahh!. I got my first manduka prolite just 3 days ago, i folded it just for 7 minutes and it already left a permanent mark on it.
If so - it might be worth it for you even after weighing all the above up…
omg where did you purchase your straps??
Heya! I'm sorry I missed this message a few weeks ago! They're from a Dutch yoga brand called Love Generation, and they have loads of cute straps! You can find them here: www.yogashop.nl/nl/tassen/yogamat-slings-carry-straps/ Enjoy!
Wonderful advice here I will definitely follow
Thanks again see you soon all the best 👍👍👍

great tips!!! Thank you for sharing, I have been doing it wrong haha ❤️
I mean... there’s no real “right” or “wrong”... but if it helps more people get cleaner mats... then I say it’s “right”. Haha! 🙌
Thank you this video ☺️

Thanks for stopping by! 🙏
Omg I didn’t know this 😆
...and once you know, you can't "unknow". 😂
Great tips to take my mat when we are allowed to travel again! I must I always need to wash my mat, Marley-my furry friend loves to step on it!
Aww, so cute that Marley practices along with you. :) And yeah... can't wait to travel again too! (we're going to a b+b just 20 minutes drive away for the next few days, so I guess that's as much traveling as we'll be doing for now!) ;)
That's so creative! I'm not sure I would have thought of rolling my mat that way. BTW, not too anal for me! 😂Thanks!
We need some germs for immunity, especially when working from home now!
Yes, I agree! But I don’t want to pick up a foot fungus from a studio rental mat! 😅
For a germaphobe, this is such a great tip Jaime!
Hahaha. Glad you agree. High-five, fellow germaphobe! 👋
@6:14 the shade! 😎
Hehehe. No shade. You do you! 🙌❤️🙌
I dont like the creasing marks at all. I would avoid this method
And that’s your prerogative. That’s why we’re all different! 🌟
@@jaimetan yeahh!. I got my first manduka prolite just 3 days ago, i folded it just for 7 minutes and it already left a permanent mark on it. In ur video it says it takes a loong long time to leave permanent wrinkles on it. But in my case just took seven minutes lol. Why is that? Idk. My manduka prolite is an original. Thanks for the videos.
@@m.6854 oh no! Sorry to hear that. My mats are more than a decade old now so maybe the materials used now are different from what they used to use. But good to know. If I make future reviews I’ll need to caveat that more. Thanks for watching and your comment!
@@jaimetan lol yes! Like when u have a new car or sneakers and u dont want a single scratch on them at least for the first month. I folded it caused i needed to add extra thickness for my knees for one particular asana. The exercise lasted no more than 7 minutes as i said, and then i noticed the mark. No big deal of course but considering the price and the fact that is new i was upset lol.
Am I the only one that is bothered carrying the mat with all the dirt on the outside after folding it this way?
I’d much rather have the dirt on the outside than flipped onto the inside of the mat! Also if you do it the other way around - I wouldn’t want the inside of my mat exposed on the outside, picking up dirt. Soooo… 🤷🏻♀️😂
Helo
Heya! 👋
Hi 32 like by my side my dear sister
Thanks for your support! 🙌
Some good shares but The “ dirty hippie”? Really?
Just a turn of phrase! No offense meant by it
I rolled my brand new mandala pro yoga mat like that for literally 6 hrs only and it has a huge crease in the middle I wish I had t seen this video ! Sucks !
Ah! Oh no! …well I actually like the crease in the middle of my mat now… gives it character 🌟
No thanks. The crease line is ugly
Ha! I can appreciate that sentiment!
Hayy , who are you beautiful...
Hello back to you, fellow beautiful being. Wishing you a great week ahead.
That’s how I do it, too. 🫣🥰
