  • HOW TO BREAK IN YOUR MANDUKA PRO BLACK YOGA MAT WITH A SALT SCRUB!
    Buy Manduka mat and towel here
    www.amazon.com...
    I LOVE Manduka mats. I don't get paid to say that, it's just true. They make THE BEST mats in the world. Great feel, great thickness, great company, socially and environmentally conscious. It has a lifetime guarantee. I recommend these mats to all of my students.
    When they get the mats, they always complain that it slips. They get upset that they paid a lot of money for a mat but they slip. This video shows the process to speed up the break in period for these mats. Over time the mats get better and stickier. But if you read the directions on the back of the label that Manduka provides, you will see how to speed up the break in process.
    I'm telling you that this is the best mat. It's not new and improved. It was perfect from the beginning. They don't need to improve it. This video should help you enjoy your mat earlier. Practice on it every day. It, like you, will get better with time

    I see this was posted in 2016. I make this comment now in 2020 and want to thank you for not only helping me to make a decision for my practice, but also being so inspiring. Your comment that breaking-in the mat was "part of the practice" was so motivating and really made me realize why I do yoga. Thanks for the tutorial! And hopefully the person who found your lost mat was able to find their own practice with it.

      Thanks Bailey. Yoga is a lifetime practice. Using your body how it is supposed to be used. The lifetime mat makes a difference to me I still use this mat and it is better than new. Every day it gets better. I've gained some weight during this coronavirus pandemic so my next video series will show me using yoga to get BACK in shape with this mat. The need for yoga never goes away. The older you get the more you need it a little bit every day helps. But I will try the ashtanga primary series regularly for a month and see what my weight is like. Thanks for your comment and keep practicing!

    I used water and a sponge and I scrubbed for about 10 minutes before letting it dry in the sun. I just scrubbed until the salt was not on the mat. There was some salt residue after drying and I just wiped it off with water. It's really sticky after doing this. Thanks for your question. Hope this helped.

      Natural Self Yoga I used the same method as you but still slippery then I used baby wipes in each practice and in about a week, the mat was grippy enough for me. Manduka doesn't recommend this, because well... for some people... it's too grippy! But for me, was the perfect solution.

      Thanks Aura! I just got back from India where I used my old Manduka Pro Lite. It was an advanced teacher training and when others got a chance to get on it they talked about how sticky and firm and soft it was. It's about 5 years old. The salt scrub isn't perfect. . . but over time it will get better. I use alcohol wipes too after classes. Just know that it will get better even if you don't do anything. Practice a lot. Thank you for your input on the baby wipes though! I'm sure it helps. I don't think there is such a thing as too grippy. At least not in my book! :)

      It still takes time. It will continue to improve the more you use it. Try the alcohol wipes after every practice in addition to the salt scrub that you did. I left it out to dry in the sun too so that might have helped. My pro black is really grippy after just doing this video. And it is continuing to improve.

      Natural Self Yoga Thanks for all of your responses. I don't think you're a spokesman. I just hear your passion for the product and your response to real frustration. I will keep trying to break it in. Entered another post with what I've done so far. I been doing hot yoga for the past couple weeks and got this because I heard good things and decided to commit. Before that, I'd been using the same gaiam mat for 10 years with no problems. Lol. My practice consisted of a few dvd's in front of the tv for months on and off. Now that I've invested in hot yoga and this manduka, I will see it through. Hopefully, I sound as devoted as you soon. :)

    My husband purchased a lovely Jade yoga mat for me 2 yrs ago for my birthday. It's beautiful. So beautiful that I did not love it enough nor have used it enough. Pulled it out and notice there is a "slickness" to it...actually has always been this way...hense potential reason for not using it. Anyhow who knew you had to break in your yoga mat! I am immediately going to try this tomorrow and cross my fingers my mat becomes a sticky surface on which I can reclaim my practice! Nonetheless thanks for the yoga towel tip...def. going to purchase until my mat is "broken in". ~Namaste

      @seechangenyc280 3 года назад +1

      Wow, I had a totally different experience with the Jade. The Manduka was like a skating rink to me. You probably moved on by now but....I pray you did not do that salt scrub to the Jade Harmony, which is my go-to mat as it is grippy right out of the box. It is open cell (all rubber), unlike the Manduka Pro which is closed cell, and requires a different cleaning purpose. The Jade does not have a film on it. Safe and secure were my number one and two priorities and this mat provides both. You sacrifice the ability to slide easily into postures because it is so grippy and I wish it had a lil more cushioning. Cleaning is easy: wash your mat with 3 parts hot water: 1 part vinegar. Do not use soap, essential oils. I have super sensitive, reactive skin and allergies and this method works like a charm - and causes neither. P.S. Me: I hate yoga towels and the Jade does not require one. Just this girl's humble opinion.

      Thanks for your comment Niki! Remember that your Manduka mat will continue to improve over time. My mat is about a year and a half old now and while it still looks brand new after using it many times each day, it's so sticky. The rubber also softens over time. It keeps the support but becomes softer every day. There are many great mats, but I love my Manduka a lot. I hope you love yours too. Yoga adventures await! I can't wait until you discover all the places you will "go" on your Manduka mat. Have fun!!

      Brenda Alvarez thank you for your comment. It is frustrating to slip on an expensive mat. But remember it will continue to improve the longer you have it. Your sweat will do the same thing as the salt over time. This process speeds it up. The mats will last forever and they are great for knees. It will be the last mat you need to buy.

  • @paulkoller8104
    @paulkoller8104 6 лет назад +3

    I did the salt scrub. Not really very effective. So I used a fine grit sand paper. Much better! But I know that Manduka can't really tell you to sandpaper your mat.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +3

      thanks for the comment. Actually the salt is not supposed to physically scrub the finishing film off. It is a chemical reaction caused by the salt. I would not use sandpaper even though I know slipping is very frustrating. The mat will wear in eventually without using anything (the salt in your sweat will work). But also, the SUNLIGHT is another important factor. SUNLIGHT breaks down the film on the mat too. So after this video (done in the spring/summer) I left this mat outside in the sun for the rest of the day. That makes a difference too. Please let me know how your mat is after the sandpaper. It may work, but not something I would recommend or try myself.

    • @paulkoller8104
      @paulkoller8104 6 лет назад

      Well, thanks. Can you tell us the chemical reaction you're referring to? (Are we talking about Azodicarbonamide?) I know that it's much more natural to use sea salt rather than sandpaper from Home Depot, but it worked. MUCH better and I may do it again. All we are doing is getting rid of the film. If I happen to ruin it, it's not that big of a deal. I would think that Manduka would take care of this problem and not leave it to the customer.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +1

      well, if you watch the video that manduka put out (after I put it this video up) it shows a person just rubbing the salt on the mat lightly and letting it sit over night. There is not much scrubbing happening. Im sure it will work out. Manduka is a great company.

    • @paulkoller8104
      @paulkoller8104 6 лет назад

      I was thinking about this and it occured to me that if it's a chemical reaction, why the need for COURSE salt? Couldn't you just pour saltwater on it then?

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +1

      Well yes, actually the salt in your sweat does the job in time. I actually scrubbed my mat. It speeds up that process and gets better over time. I think scrubbing makes a difference I'm just saying what their video says. The sunlight is supposed to create a reaction breaking down the substance as well. I am just saying what I've been told or read somewhere. I don't actually know how it works. I just know these manduka mats are a bit slippery when you first get them, but they become soft and sticky over the years.

    I totally did this salt scrub process and the mat was still dangerously slippery. I get that there’s a “breaking in” period, but are we just supposed to use a dangerous mat until it breaks in? I literally hurt myself trying to use this piece of crap mat. I’m going to either get a Jade or try the new Manduka GRP.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +1

      Dylan Frazier I'm sorry you have had a difficult time with this mat. Your yoga practice should make you feel safe and comfortable. The only way it is very dangerous is if you practice in a heated room where you sweat. In that case no mat will stick. I recommend using a towel to help you when you sweat...with any mat.
      You do need to scrub and leave it out in the sun to dry. This was several years ago and my mat still looks brand new. I use it at least 20 times a week and it is sticky and softening like butter. It will continue to improve.
      My main goal is to encourage people to practice yoga. If you are focusing on mats you are dedicating yourself to the practice you will carry with you for the rest of your life. Keep.doing what you are doing. Hope you find a mat that works for you.

      I did let the salt sit on the mat for 24 hours and vigorously scrubbed it with a damp cloth after. It was even more slippier than at first so I had to google for a solution. I found out that using dish soap and scrub it and washed it off in the shower (or just use a garden hose) should do the trick, which it did! its now amazing and not slippy at all. Its this stupid factory film that needs to break off which is oily, and the soap removes it right away.

    Hello, I am frustrated with my slippery Manduka Prolite. I have done the salt scrub twice now and lots of sun baths. Upon research, someone said that Manduka stated, "The Pro series will be grippy, unless you are sweaty. If you have a sweaty practice, buy our towel." I am shocked at this statement and wanted to ask if you do not slip while sweaty? I do not like practicing on a towel and would like to have this for a lifetime, but I am slipping so much that it is dangerous. But if you can break it in and not slip, even while sweaty, then I"ll keep on trying. Thank you.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  8 лет назад

      Hi Stephanie! Thank you for your comment. I sweat a lot when I practice in the heat. I know the struggle with slipping due to sweat and it is a problem. It is dangerous (especially in a pose like "wheel" urdhva dhanurasana). Any time you sweat, slipping with any mat I've used is a problem. I sweat so much in the heat that the type or brand mat would not make any difference. I have to use a towel and that is the case with any mat I've ever used.
      Having said that, I like practicing without the heat when I don't sweat. Some people feel like they need to sweat to feel like they've done something. When I don't practice in heat, I enjoy the fun poses like arm balances and inversions without sweating (and slipping). It is still challenging and builds strength and flexibility. I teach and have taught for years in the heat. I understand why people like it and I know a lot of people do. Some people don't sweat as much and don't worry about slipping.
      I don't like using a towel either. I prefer the grip of the mat. When I practice I always have a towel handy. But I don't use the towel until I absolutely have to. I still say Manduka is the best material for grip and joint protection. But if you sweat there may be different mats that are only slightly better to prevent slipping. I wish I could give you better news about practicing without slipping while you sweat. But this answer is as honest as I can be from my experience. I hope this information helps and I hope you continue enjoying your yoga practice. It is a journey of a lifetime. Thanks again.

      Thank you so much for your in-depth answer. I do not like practicing hot yoga, but my studio keeps it warmer than average. And I've always been a huge sweater. My Eko Manduka was a wonderful choice for me for years, but I felt wasteful having to get a new one as it breaks down in a few years. I'd love to have my pro forever, but I'll have to see how safe I feel. Thank you again for your video. I'm going to do one more sun bath and salt scrub before I give up hope.

      Thanks @LawsonOne ! Keep us posted on how it's going. I promise you that it gets better with time. I don't know why I feel obligated to defend Manduka. I'm not a representative for them. But I do know how important a good mat is for the joints if you want to practice for life (it's important to me). I also know how frustrating slipping is. It's very distracting and keeps you from focusing on the practice. Moving towels around is the same. My mat was fine after the scrub and drying in the sun of this video. It continues to get better in time.

      Natural Self Yoga Thanks for the responses. Here's my process for the first 24 hours. If anyone follows this, please be responsible for your own results I did this on my own and was prepared for whatever outcome:
      Laid mat out in patio. Oddly, southern Nevada had no sun so overcast and cool was the exposure for the mat. Spread the coarse sea salt all over the mat and left it over night. Next day, the salt broke down with the moisture from the air and occasional rain. Added more salt and dawn dishwashing liquid, scrubbed it with a green scrubbing pad. I let it sit for 4 more hours. Next, using a scouring powder and soft scrub, scrubbed the entire mat once more. I let it sit with the cleaners on it for another hour. The sun finally came out for a few minutes. At the end of the hour, I rolled the mat up and brought it inside and rinsed it for SEVERAL minutes in the bathtub. Sandy grains of green rinsed off with the souring cleaners. At first, I thought this was from the green pad but think it may have been from the mat. I let it drain in the tub for a while before spreading it on the floor and wiping the whole thing down with paper towels. As soon as it was dry, I did a downward dog. On one end, I stuck to the mat perfectly. On the other I slid. Not up to another round, I did a Vinyasa practice on it at home (to a DVD). It went well. I did my downward dogs on the sticky side. After, I did a spray test spraying water on the sticky end to test doing another down dog and I slid. Outside of home, I only do hot yoga so the mat will need more scrubbing at least before I can take it out of the house. Thinking of using sand paper. Got the baby wipes too so will use that after each practice. Will follow up if anyone wants to know more. Thanks.

    • @stephaniebast1729
      @stephaniebast1729 7 лет назад +2

      It's been 5 months now that I have the ProLite and in order for me to feel safe, after each vinyasa into down dog, I have to move my hands back to a new dryer place. If I keep my hands in the same place as my vinyasa, then my hands slowly slide forward during down dog making it frustrating and unsafe to jump up into handstand/forward bend. And this is with just a little moisture on my hands. Not even sweat. So, I love this mat for its density, but I miss my Eko as my hands and feet never slipped no matter how sweaty I was. Now I have a towel to constantly dry my hands on during my practice. When it gets warmer here, I think I'll try your process. I would love to know what happened if you do use sand paper. Thank you! Stephanie

      Zerofeud Spinner jade does make a very good mat. I have a travel Jade that doesn't do the brand justice because it is deliberately thin. The problem is it doesn't support knees. I know they make thicker ones. But again the best part of Manduka is never needing another mat. Lifetime guarantee and you won't really need it because the mat stays new. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. There are many great mats and as long as you have one and use it you are in good shape. Still loving the Manduka pro black though. It's just getting broken in after daily use for a year and a half.

      That's what I do if I know I'm going to sweat. I actually have a video of my mat/towel setup. It works well to prevent slipping. I love feeling the mat on the skin of my feet and hands in down dog. But I don't get to feel the mat on my skin using the towels, however safety of not slipping is great. Of course if it isn't heated usually I don't sweat too much and the Manduka sticks fine. Like a Cadillac for the knees though. Smooth ride.

      Here is a link to my setup if I don't know if I will sweat or not. Fold the towel so you can feel the mat with your hands and feet. If you don't start sweating too badly, great. If you do, unfold the towel as needed without disrupting your flow and focus too much. It works for me. Hope this helps!

      That's a good question. I really don't know how important the sunlight
      is. The scrubbing action with warm water and coarse salt are going to do
      the most work. After that, just let it air dry somewhere. The mat will
      break in over time without you doing anything. If you clean it every
      time you use it with alcohol wipes or something like that, it will help
      too.

      Hey Christine! My first manduka was an Eko. I loved the feel and look of it. It smelled like rubber but I still love it to this day. The problem is it doesn't have a lifetime guarantee. I used it so much that I did wear holes in it. I still use it, It's still my favorite. But my primary mat is the Pro Black. Secondary mat is the Pro Lite. Third (only because it is worn out and I need a new one if I want to use it as a professional) is the Eko.

    Hello! I'm just starting my yoga journey and I'd really like to purchase a good mat. After watching many videos and reviews of different ones, I'm considering between Liforme and Manduka Pro. Have you tried the Liforme mat before? It seems to be good for the alignment marks on the mat and I haven't heard it being slippery, but it is more expensive though. I'm just afraid that the Manduka will be slippery although I don't almost sweat at all, and I might not practice enough to break that in. Do you have some good recommendations? Thanks!

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад

      I know a lot of people who love the Liforme mat. I've never actually used one but the material seems very similar to the Lululemon mats. I will make reviews of each of those mats at some point. The lines are not necessary if you have a good teacher. He or she will guide your alignment. If you don't sweat, I would recommend the Manduka Pro (especially if it's cheaper - I've never looked at prices for the Liforme mats). The drawback for the Manduka Pro has always been the price. But it has a lifetime guarantee. The reason Manduka has a lifetime guarantee is you won't need to use it. There are lots of great mats out there. Just that you are deciding to practice enough to get a yoga mat is a great step. It will break in over time, but if you do this salt scrub when you get it, it'll be good to go from your first Om. You can't go wrong with either mat. Good luck on your journey. Thanks for commenting.

    Do you think the Manduka Pro can last you a lifetime? I'm soooo disappointed in the Liforme. I wish I had known before purchasing it that it starts deteriorating after 300-500 uses. Mine is literally disintegrating and it's so annoying how there are little pieces of peeled-off rubber everywhere after each practice. Most Liforme reviews are from people who haven't had it long enough to know that so of course they're in love with it but if you have to replace it every year, it's a scam.
    I have a Manduka PROlite that I had actually bought before the Liforme but was too lazy to break it in. I'm gonna break it in and if I'm happy with the grip then I'll get the regular Pro because I find the PROlite too narrow.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617

      Yes. The manduka pro black mat will last forever. If it doesn't they will give you a new one. I still use my mat from this video and it still looks brand new. I'm sorry to hear about the lifforme mats. They look nice and I've thought about getting one. I'd like to get several actually. But the main reason for spending so much on a manduka mat is that it will be the last money you will have to spend on a mat unless you lose it. It will last forever but if you wear holes in it in 25 years they will give you a new one. I love my manduka mat! Thanks for your comment.

      @@naturalselfyoga1617 Thanks for your reply! I don't think the Manduka Pro is that expensive if it lasts forever. It is actually cheaper than the Liforme - even the extra long Manduka Pro. At least in Europe:
      - Manduka Pro regular size: €110
      - Manduka Pro extra long: €125
      - Liforme: €135-€155
      The Liforme is more expensive AND lasts only a year if you practice +5 times a week so it doesn't seem like a good investment in my opinion. I'll use my Manduka PROlite for the time being and if I like it I'll get the regular PRO since I prefer a wider mat 😀

    My first yoga mat was a Black Mat Pro, loved that mat, no slippage issues after it was broken in through regular use. Sold it to buy one of the sparkly coloured Pro mats, extra length. After 2 years of regular use, it was still never as grippy as the original Black Mat Pro. I had to work at it to maintain grip, which actually isn't a bad thing to help refine my technique. I found an excuse to buy another Black Mat Pro - Black Onyx on a Black Friday sale @ Manduka, standard length. It's just like my original Black Mat Pro. I did use the sea salt scrub anyways. I wonder if mat colour would make any difference.

      Interesting experience. Thank you for sharing. I still use the mat from this video every day. It keeps getting better and better. So I don't know about experiencing different colors. I do hope to try out some other mats and video a bit of a review and comparison just out of interest. But this Manduka mat will continue to be my "go-to" mat for daily use. Still looks brand new. I use it inside and outside, hot and sweaty or relaxing and supportive. My favorite place to be in the world is anywhere on my Manduka black mat. And I don't get paid to say that. It's just how it is at the moment.

      I use one of the Manduka Eko Lite rubber mats when I travel just because it's so light. I also hate it just because it's so light, it tends to grip underfoot so it doesn't lay flat when I'm doing more aggressive transitions, so I have to stop to unfold it flat again. So it is grippy, but harder to clean (open cell?) too. You inspired me to scrub down my Pro mats this afternoon with sea salt and let it catch some sunshine. Thank you! It is my favourite mat too. I'm also envious that you're able to travel with your Black Mat, I might just go mat less when I travel.

      Hi Lisa! Thank you for your comment and I am very excited for you with your new Manduka Pro mat. The color does not matter. The longer you leave it out in the sun the better. I did this in the morning and left my mat here in full sunlight until it got dark. I still use this mat every day and it still looks almost new. I love it. Remember your sweat will break down the film on the mat naturally over time. This process just speeds it up a bit. The longer you have it and practice with it the better it will get. It gets softer and stickier every day while it maintains its protection for your joints. Enjoy your mat!

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +2

      Usually when people get their new Manduka Pro Black mat, they are disappointed that it is slippery. Manduka uses a finishing substance on the mats that wears off with use. The mat is grippy if once the substance wears off and it gets "broken-in". But if you want to speed up the "breaking-in" process then you would use this salt scrub. Salt is supposed to react with the substance to wear it away so you won't slip. You have a lifetime guarantee. It usually takes a year or so to wear it in. Also sunlight helps to break down the finishing substance.

    What is the use of salt supposed to be? I do not understand. I can not translate the title well into Spanish.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  6 лет назад +2

      The salt helps to make the mat sticky. Salt in your sweat breaks the mat in over time. If you want to speed up the process, scrub a little salt onto the mat. If you have ever bought a new baseball glove, you know the leather is very stiff. Over time and with extra oil, the leather becomes soft and flexible. The same thing happens to these rubber mats. The "official" manduka video shows them just sprinkling the salt on the mat over night and wiping it off in the morning. I scrubbed mine and left it out in the sun. It will make the mat more sticky more quickly. The rubber will become soft and sticky over time. Sunlight helps to make it sticky too. Just use the mat regularly and it will get better over time.

    • @naturalselfyoga1617
      @naturalselfyoga1617  7 лет назад

      Hi. It's not a dumb question. Many people don't know that there is a top and bottom to the mat. The logo side is the side facing up when you practice. The other side is designed to prevent the mat from sliding on the ground. The logo side is designed to keep your hands and feet from sliding. I've been to a few classes where the teacher puts the mats down for you when you are checking in. It's a nice service. But sometimes the teachers put the mat down upside down

      LOL! I hear you! I just bought a Pro Lite and it is much more slippery than the heavy Manduka Pro, which was my 1st "real" yoga mat! On the heavy Pro, I carried a natural bristle "foot" brush in my yoga mat and brushed it after every class (approx. 5 times a week) & that broke it in pretty quick! I did a salt scrub on the Pro Lite and it helped a bit, but for some reason, I feel the slipperiness mostly in my hands/palms. I am doing another Kosher Salt (rougher salt) scrub, but this time I have sprayed a mixture of DAWN dish soap w/ 5% cooking vinegar then scrubbed it. I am going to leave it out for 2 days, then scrub again, then rinse. Hopefully that will help! That DAWN/vinegar mixture (50-50) works well for cleaning too, I try to avoid cleaning products w/ too many chemicals. DAWN is also used to save birds when they get covered in oil from oil spills so I know it's safe, besides you can wash dishes w/ it!

      I don't know the answer for sure. The label says use sea salt. But I imagine any salt would have a similar chemical reaction to remove the finishing film off of the mat. Wipe it down with even just water or some tea tree oil or rubbing alcohol after each class and it will be perfect in no time.

It is made from a different material and doesn't come with a lifetime guarantee. I used it so much that I did wear holes in it after a couple of years. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't recommend doing this to an Eko Lite mat. It's probably best just to use a hand towel for when your palms get sweaty. That is the reason for this video. You have to do a salt scrub to remove the finishing film and prevent it from slipping. Sort of like breaking in a baseball glove. You don't have to do the salt scrub and it will break in eventually with the salt in your sweat. Over time it gets stickier and it has a lifetime warranty. I hope you find a mat that works for you. Try this salt scrub and putting the mat out in the sun. I'm really not a representative. This is just my experience. Thanks again for your comment and keep practicing.

Of course I think there are Jade, Lif4me?, Lululemon (has about 10 mats now). There are many options these days. But contact Manduka with your concerns. Thanks.
