  • We were working on a video about the flags of the states of the U.S.A., when ‪@CGPGrey‬ released a video about... the flags of the states of the U.S.A.!
    Oh well! Hey maybe all the attention he draws will get us some extra views, hum? 😁

    A lot of those flags were designed by committee, usually made of politicians with no design expertise. It's a wonder that they aren't uglier.
    I'm not from Alaska, and I've never been there, but I know the story that its flag was designed by a school child. Which goes to show that kids can do a better job than politicians.

      Kids are way better than politicians in every way, but specifically because kids you can teach when they do something wrong. 😉

    Terrible lack of your co-star Ash, but David was a welcome addition. Personally, most of your S-tier stuff would be on my 'boring' and 'vanilla' list - yeah, they fit some 'classic' flag criteria, but they don't bring anything new and interesting to the table.
    I think my favorite was Indiana. And when I saw Ohia I figured LucasArts' 'Day of the Tentacle' actually was a documentary. ;)

      Ash was there, just off-camera. 😉🐈
      I think most flags in general are boring, with a few outliers here and there that are pretty cool.

    Amusingly, I've been subscribed to your channel longer than I've been subscribed to CCP Grey. Got here from TwoSet Violin, stayed for the art content and violin lectures.

    Utah recently changed theirs. You should've ranked that one.

      You are right, I should at least have mentioned it, and the new flag is flag-perfection! But it isn't yet /officially/ in use (it will be in March 9, 2024) so it didn't show up on my research until it was too late.

    Hey I just wanted to let you know CPG gray has been copyright striking people lately that have reacted to this video you may want to private it. I fully believe you fall under fare use but I don't want to see you go through the fight to get the strike removed

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Год назад +1

      Thanks! But there's no grounds whatsoever for a copyright claim against my video (though I am aware RUclips is pretty crazy when dishing out copyright strikes). My video is not a reaction of his video.
      If he's filing copyright claims, it's probably against people who have used his video in theirs.

    Florida didn’t copy Alabama, they both just wanted to glamorize the Confederacy in a way that wasn’t blatantly using the full confederate flag.

      I have no idea of the later politics, but the Florida and Alabama flags are variations of the very old Spanish Cross of Burgundy colonial flag from way before the Civil War times.

    You were harsh! XD I will agree with the boringness of so many of those flags, though I don't see any immediate problem with putting the name on it. It helps clods like me identify the state's flag when I see a whole bunch all in one place, ha ha. I was born and raised in Indiana and have always loved that flag, too. My mom is from MD and has always loved the flag. It's wild, all right, lol. I think it was taken from two families important in the state's history.
    Also, isn't Oregon's flag the only two-sided one? I was also very interested about what you would say about Virginia's, since you live there and all, but after the boob comment, I was surprised you laughed more at George Washington's face than the VA state seal, lol. And I will have to disagree with you on the DC flag! I like it. It's kinda serious and official-looking, very stately. I always thought DC was sort of austere and not very pretty, so it's sort of fitting in that way.

      I stand by my choice of going against names on the flags. They should be unique and memorable enough that we can tell them apart without 'subtitles'! 😉
      And yes, Oregon has the beaver on the other side, I should have mentioned that. But putting your best feature on the back of your flag doesn't count!
      Let's be honest, if Virginia's flag didn't have a boob, nobody would remember it! It's totally forgettable without that feature.
      And Washington's is just lazy. They weren't even trying! And I was tired, I had been looking at dozens of flags, and you know when you're tired and something silly suddenly triggers you into starting to laugh about it and it's not even that funny? I think that's what happened there. 😁

      Ok, yes, artistically speaking, a state shouldn't shout its name in your face, true. Even more reason for a state to work harder to convey itself on its flag! Also, I can definitely relate to feeling so punchy that anything is funny, so I think I can understand why you found Washington so funny, lol.

      The Maryland combines the (I don't know the correct term) arms of the Calverts and Crosslands (guess which is which). Compare the flag of Baltimore City: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Baltimore

      Yup, couldn't remember the names of the top of my head those many months ago! Coats of arms, I believe?

    The UK/GB flag is the Union flag and is only the Union Jack when on a ship!

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Год назад +1

      I thought that too, but according to Wikipedia, "It is sometimes asserted that the term Union Jack properly refers only to naval usage, but this assertion was dismissed by the Flag Institute in 2013 following historical investigations". 🤷‍♂

    Good video but why is Ohio F tier??

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Год назад +1

      I don't like the way it looks. 😉
      The combination of colors and stars makes me think of the 'political rally' type of flags I mentioned for some states, and the fact that it is an odd shape (they officially call it a triangular swallowtail) with a V notch makes it, to me, not very aesthetically pleasing. To me it looks more like a pennant than a proper state flag.

    • @restitvtororbis5330
      @restitvtororbis5330 6 месяцев назад

      @@SculptyWorksinteresting points, but on important thing to remember is that state flags almost always have the American flag flown directly above them. The Ohio flag just looks natural flying with the stars and stripes in a way that most of the other flags don't. The shape and symmetrical design makes it look very good when hanging vertically, and is very easy to decorate with and include in designs because it's easily recognizable at any size and can be used in repeated patterns. It's hard to stress just how common the Ohio flag design is to see in Ohio, it's almost as bad as Texas, it's everywhere.

  • @zidane8452

    Nevada the worst flag. It shouldn't be B imo

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Год назад

      You are correct! I was talking about all the changes I wanted done with it, and put it in B-tier with those changes in mind, but it should have gone lower the way it is.
