I was her musical director in the mid 80's and played piano with her and her band "The Nashville Huggies". (the name she gave us.) She was the most gentle, spiritual person I have ever known and it was real honor to have worked with her.
That song !!!! That voice!!! Long Live This Republic!!!! Thanks for this video !!!ALL AMERICANS SHOULD LISTEN !!!!! N LEARN!!!!!!We've paid a very high price for Our Freedom!!!!
As a sound engineer I had the honor to do sound for a performance by Odetta. To say it was moving, surreal, religious, ethereal is not doing it justice. She was amazing, I knew I was in the presence of greatness. The Shure Beta 58 microphone she used has never been sung or spoken into again...
I had the honor to work as a tour-producer for ODETTA on a couple of tours in Austria. She was one of the most amazing people I met in my life, and we had some very touching moments together. Thank you Odetta!
La vidi tantissimi anni fa, in una trasmissione televisiva!!!, E, nonostante la situazione, mi sembro' di ascoltare un'intera orchestra, nella sua voce.
I had no idea this 'Pillar of Spiritual Strenght' still stood in these final days.....Her longevity is a gift along with those spirituals that come from WAY DOWN..........!PRAISE THE LORD!
her voice sounds with the thousands who have come before her, releasing their voice so that they may finally sing and we may finally hear. That is soul.
Odette, I know you are in heaven singing with all God's other angels. I annot even imagine what it sounds like, but with you and the others, it is no doubt reverberating magnificent! And if I ever can go to heaven you will be the first I want to hear singing, we are lost without you.
I heard a similar song on an old movie and looked it up found this video and as soon as I heard her singing I felt so much that I can't quit crying this is so beautiful I feel like the Lord is speaking to me
Glory glory glory, let US lay that burden down. Let US heal the pain and the hurt. There will still be hard times, there will still be death and disease, but we can still be kind to everything.
Thank you Odetta. I recall singing your songs as a little girl living in Rumble Beach, Vancouver Island. Your powerful voice reaches the core of my heart on this day Dec.9.21.
Wow! A friend posted this and I loved it. So for all of those that need a bit of soulful music to soothe your mind and weary soul, have a listen you won't be disapointed.
This is a great recording of a one of a kind singer just months before her death. I saw he once in 60s at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. She was powerful and mesmerizing. I love that this was a cappella, just a great voice and a Shure M58.
In the summer of 2008, I was road-tripping with a friend and went to Bridgeport, CT because I wanted to see the Barnum Museum. We got to town in the early evening and checked in at the Holiday Inn just down the street from the museum. Being a nice summer evening, we went out and walked around a bit, and after enjoying pizza and wine at a local spot, we came out of the restaurant and heard some music in the little public park across the street. So we sat down on a low wall, and there were a few dozen people listening to an old woman who was singing along with a single accompanist. She had a kind of rough, honest, life-experienced voice, filled with human emotions, cracking jokes, slightly naughty as she encouraged the young folks to explore their natural urges. Her singing presenting the human condition. I enjoyed the concert, and at the end she invited people to buy a CD. I figured I would help out this poor old lady by buying a disk. I felt magnanimous and generous, what a nice guy I was! Before the end of the year I heard an announcement on the radio. Odetta died in December. "During her lifetime, she performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to bohemian nightclubs and coffeehouses and released several recordings. She became one of the most prominent folk singers of the 1950s and '60s, influencing artists such as Joan Baez, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, who says that her singing first turned him on to folk music." Odetta? That's who's CD I bought at that little summer night free concert in Bridgeport. Ain't that a-rockin'?
It's January 13, 2017 .. days away from the celebration of the life of Dr. King .. and what many of us see as the greatest threat to American democracy ever that will take place on January 20th as a new administration is legitimized. Beautiful Queen Odetta . your words shine as clear and loudly as they did when i first heard you decades ago ... and this song couldn't be more timely. Angels bless you as you pass by them on the streets of that Glorious City of God.
Don't try to use Odetta voice to legitimate your political claims. And the greatest threat to democracy is to not accept the choice of american people.
ecco!!! quando vedo e sento queste meravigliose prove della grandezza di un artista......mi commuovo fino alle lacrime. che umiltà e che fierezza ci sono nel dare il proprio talento. grande ody ....grande grande grande

No musician has ever brought me to tears until this very moment.
Understand your reaction to her, but you need to get out more, and listen to more music !!!!
