  • Dylan is a 12-year-old boy who strives to become a professional jockey. One of his first races was the Glenbeigh Races, a prestigious grassroots horse racing event in Glenbeigh, a rural southwestern area of Ireland. His training involves boxing, and his inspiration is supplemented by quotes from Rocky IV. Because he's such a lightweight, he has to add five stone (70 pounds) of lead in his saddle to give him a better control of his horse. This short documentary by Just So London follows Dylan while he trains to be the best against "bigger and stronger, and taller and older" boys, and how he's "going to be something serious in the making."

    A bit of info for some of the people going on about him beating the horse. Jockeys don't carry 'normal' whips, they have to use foam-covered whips. at the same time (which is quite clear if you actually look at the video) they are nowhere near as rigid as a whip used in showjumping. I'm not saying the horse doesn't feel it, but they are much more about the sound than any pain.

      Some horses get marked after a whip, hitting a horse down the neck or above shoulder height is banned, if they did those two things the horse would be even greatly marked which means they have been hurt. Jockeys in Ireland get away with more than in England.

    Im an 11 year old girl, and i really love horses. I have been riding horses all my life and at the age of 9 i got my own horse. Her name is Blackdiamond and she is an arabian/welsh mare and 5 years old, she was wild and stressed when i first got her, but now in 2020 she is amazing. I just had to keep on training and at the very end she is now an amazing dressage/show jumping pony and we compete alot.

    What a beautiful film, showing the culture and environment which have made Ireland a world horseracing superpower. Without the broad amateur grassroots, such as Point-to-Point, pony and beach racing, there would be no multi-generational superstars such as the O'Briens. As for the "horse beating", there are far more important questions than that, I really don't believe that the horses are hurt. In any case, use of the whip is tightly regulated by most countries' Racing Rules, and jockeys are frequently fined for apparently excessive use. PS: Isn't the "70 lbs of lead" needed to bring the rider weight to that required in a particular race?

    Horse racing is truly spectacular. And for those criticizing the use of the whip, it is for a reason. Because of the jockey's short stirrups, the horse does not respond to kicks, that's where the whip comes in. If the Jockey didn't have a whip there wouldn't be that much of a response from the horse.

They where always in the lead and got 1st place twice and 2nd place once. I was so impressed. I’m 13 myself I was just a tiniest jealous and I rlly want to take horse back riding lessons. Oh and also it was stick racing. Very impressive

    try riding without a whip. horse is giving you everything hes got. do you think the whip helps? if you want to be a good jockey, think about your horse, put yourself where he is. what do you think?

    • @gp5017
      @gp5017 8 лет назад +17

      You understand a whip is needed, even in hands and heels races for amateurs because first and foremost it is a corrective tool to keep a horse in a straight line. If you studied racing and understood the use of the whip you would know that. You'd also know that jockeys love the horses they work with, and aren't vicious as most people make out. They are very considerate to the horses, which is why you see so many pull up, especially in the UK and Ireland. But again, most people just want to hate the sport without understanding it. As a racehorse owner, I can unequivocally tell you I love horses more than most of you here, and believe me, these are the best looked after animals in the UK!

      Watch American Pharaoh and Secretariats races then, not all jockeys use a whip, but you have to be a truly great jockey and have a truly amazing horse to not use your whip and keep your job, because if you lose the blame can easily be put on your "anti-whip"

    • @acanofcarrots9833

    There's a reason the horse is pinning its ears... it's not happy being whipped, confused and having to run, run, run every time it gets ridden, and then put into a tiny locked box where it can never be a horse. A horse isn't a toy- you can't put it on the shelf and take it out only when you want to use it- stop treating it like one.

    • @acanofcarrots9833
      @acanofcarrots9833 6 лет назад +3

      The whips are covered in foam, and also if you didn't know, horses turn their ears back when they run to keep the wind from blocking their hearing which is very scary to them. And a few horses turn their ears back to hear the rider.

    • @jesusismybaeagh425
      @jesusismybaeagh425 6 лет назад

      ACanOfCarrots it doesn't matter what the material is. A whip is designed to scare a horse in to running faster. In modern times, crops are used as a light tap to remind horses to pay attention. Whipping at this degree is pain, pain and more pain. If you really think that just because whips are covered in foam that they don't hurt then you really are quite stupid. Horses have a large number of nerve ends in their body. They can feel a fly land on its back. But because the whips covered in foam I guess they can't feel it....
      As for the listening to the rider, pinning their ears and turning the back are two different things.

    • @ms_scribbles

      You don't know what you're talking about.

    • @awuma
      @awuma 6 лет назад +2

      There's a big difference between ears "pinned" and ears turned back away from the wind and to listen to the rider. Ears are pinned back by really angry horses, and are much flatter than ears turned back. Most horses at the gallop turn their ears back, although jumping horses will often turn their ears forward when their attention is focused on the jump. There is a famous 16 year old racehorse in England which likes to gallop with ears pricked forward, but most turn them back.

    • @evaholmes5557

      Panic! At my chemical fallout the horses ears are pinned back as he is galloping... they do not feel the whip... it does not scare them... and the horse is a thoroughbred... as all race horses are... they are bred to race in big races like this and when they are retired they sometimes are retrained as show jumping horses

So even if this boy is achieving his dream it might mean pain for the horse.

    Whips should really be banned in horse racing. In Norway they banned them for harness racing, because they were abused, and there's no difference in "control" or how fast the horses run. It just hurts the horses for no reason.

    • @dutchtd8394
      @dutchtd8394 8 лет назад +6

      the crop or "whip" is covered in foam so it doesn't hurt as much as a jumping or a normal one and crating crops are only used to in some sense startle the horse or regain the horses attention.

    • @gp5017
      @gp5017 8 лет назад +2

      In terms of race riding there is a huge difference in control. Keeping a horse on a straight course at 38+mph isn't going to work without a whip. Not in the UK with it's hugely undulating surfaces, you need to keep the horse balanced of course, but failing that a whip is needed.

      Lily Martin and you say that while they are drugging up their horses and running the horses so hard that the horse dies and the horse also gets zero credit when it comes to winning and when they loose the horse gets hit. So whatever you say it will never change my opinion. 😂

    Jockeys in the US hardly ever actually hit their horses with the whips, just wave at them. And they are foam and flexible, so not anywhere near as painful as crops used for jumping or dressage. The whips are also only used for racing, never for training

    I grew up showing horses. .the ONLY times I ever used a crop was when my beloved horse was being an absolute butthole (lol)...and was on his butt..always had soft hands on the mouth. .. had a friend who took her horse out of the arena during a show, her horse broke in front of the judge (her fault for not keeping him in shape and he was a damn good horse) and she beat the ever loving shit out of him. .. never have forgotten that as it traumatized me to see it. .

    If you are scrolling through the comments just stop it's a waste of time people are saying how the whip is abuse to horses 🐴 the whip can barley be felt by these horses they have much thicker skin then us human being and the whip aren't old ropes or stuff like that they are covered with foam or a rubber thingy, the whip is more use for the sound to alert the horses to keep going, and anyways countries like Australia are already making new regulations for the whip to make sure the jockey doesn't continually use the whip too many times, also the whip is also used to control the horse incase it starts to go sideways it's a way for the jockey to "wake up" the horse.

    Whips can cause bruising and inflammation, however, horses do have resilient skin. That is not to say that their skin is insensitive. ... Jockeys aren't whipping their horses in the last 100m of a race to increase safety or to remind their horse to pay attention.

    Horse racing is indeed very very impressive. Horse and rider. But i absolutely hate how they whip the horses. Its sick in my opinion. I mean yea. Ill use a crop. But i dont whip my horse over and over again. Ill tap her once if she isnt responding to my leg. i mean for real. I rescue horses from the race track.

    • @jy7991
      @jy7991 8 лет назад +13

      Crops in horse racing are used for a number of different reasons. They use the whip for switching leads, and giving the rider more control so the horse doesn't run out, ect. Also the jockey asks for the horse to extend the stride using legs really pushing the horse before they start using the whip. They wave the whip a couple of times, then they use the crop. Just thought I'd give you some info :)

    • @reece6001
      @reece6001 8 лет назад +2

      Jaclyn Matchett I appreciate your response. But in my personal opinion I still think that crops are over used. I know that they are used for switching leads and extending. But thanks anyway :D

      All they need to do is use the rein if they want them to go faster but obviously not repeativly (is that even a word XD). I do use a whip but only for if the horse I'm riding is doing stuff I don't want them to do or to get the moving if they don't listen to me.

    All you dumb people out there are thinking that the jockeys are beating/hitting their horses. That's not true, it's either making a sound to get the horses attention or using the so called "whip" like a crop. When a horse doesn't behave, a lot of people slap it with a crop. It doesn't hurt them, it just gives them a reminder. I understand all of you feel sorry for those horses, I do too. What's really sad isn't the fact that they get "hit" it's that they're pushed too hard just because their owners want to succeed and don't care about the horse.

      It shouldn't be neccesary to whip a horse, why do you whip the horse? To go faster, apparently. Why do you want it to go faster ? Because you want to win. But why do you have to win if you're having fun?
      Easy: Because you want money. You litterally beat a horse for it go faster so you get money.

    I don't think this little kid knows that horse racing is very very abusive. 500 race horses die each year due to broken legs, the jockeys , running to hard , etc... the list can go on and on I hate hose racing and if you think I'm wrong go to the RUclips channel ( horse source ) and watch the video horse racing isn't so innocent as it seems and then come to me and say what you think
