I used to ride a Shetland pony named ginger snap and my dream was to win the Shetland grand national on her

..she was in an area where she couldnt even race where she was and on top of that a very unfair race..but still cute dont get me wrong..cute.

@@user-ck5mg9rh8t They're kids, it's safe for the ponies and the children. It is only unsafe if the rider is too big for the horse, and in this event, the kids are all the right size, it's better for kids to ride ponies so then there is less of a chance of severe injuries while riding :)

The only shetland I saw is the palomino in pink. The others are crossed.

Okay so… don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it was “cute” and all, but in my opinion people shouldn’t ride at this speed if they can’t even use their spurs correctly. It’s great that they’re this young and can somewhat ride, but still.
I’m watching this and thinking “If I heard of this when I was younger I would’ve beg my mother to let me do this when I didn’t know how to trot, canter or gallop let alone jump!”
It wasn't in the US before the previous year to this, it's been in the UK for decades, they go round the county shows raising money for charity.
If I could just chop of my legs up to my knees, then I could be a midget, and ride MY Shetland pony, and win the race!!! BEST IDEA EVER😂😂

You're looking at a little kid in a competition in a big arena being watched by thousands of people, maybe, just maybe she was a little scared, nervous, overwhelmed by everything to smile, she probably didn't even take in that she won until later when it all sunk in. But fine, judge her because she didn't smile and that she didn't pat her pony right after she won, because we literally just saw the last 10 seconds after the race finished and maybe she smiled 12 seconds after we will never know because we were not there -.-'

not true - I'm a jockey youre supposed to hold the reins tightly before the race so your horse/pony doesn't get his/her excitement up to much. Then when the race bell goes you losen your reins a touch and leg your pony/horse on

I saw how that pony who lost it's rider was so careful not to step on the kid....it knew where the kid landed and narroly missed them by swinging it's hind side out further. Smart pony!

that boy had it coming, he needed to sit up and calm that pony down from the moment he got on board, he'd have had a disciplinary if he'd been doing the UK version, He got too close to the pony in front when they were on parade, and entirely pulled his pony off balance which is why it stumbled. HOpe he's learned his lesson

These are American "Shetlands". So very far removed from the true island ponies with lots of Hackney mixed in. American Shetlands are fine boned with high stepping action like the Hackney.

They probably grew up on a farm and learnt when they were young.
These Kids Are Great But Its One Thing To Canter Being In Collection And Having Full Control And Another To Be Able To Hold On And Kick And Just Hope For The Best.

Shetland Ponies are great little jumpers. They have good ground manners and are the best trail ponies. They are a sturdy breed, great with small children and are the ideal breed to have in riding schools. Shetland Ponies can have a volatile temperament. They are prone to laminitis and are very cheeky little characters. They will buck, as they are stubborn little ponies, so expect some bucking from them. You must earn their trust. Shetland Ponies are very hairy. They have a thick mane and have a not entirely amusing mischievous streak. They have a competitive streak and actually enjoy the holidays.
Cat Lover Which holidays do they enjoy the most? :) Are they partial to, say, Memorial Day over Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday? Or do they like the holidays that involve special foods like Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas? Are they partial to relaxing on the beach during spring break? I would imagine holidays with fireworks are only fun for humans. (Disclaimer: the choice of holidays where you live may vary.) :)

Had a welsh pony as a small child. She was super cute. Rode her as was taking lessons on big horses at my trainers barn. One day in the ring she kicked my trainer's show jumping mare. Didn't hurt her but boy was my trainer done with ponies. My vet bought her for his son and I got a free lease on one of my trainer's older horses who was 17.1hh. Big change from a 10hh pony to 17hh. But the horse was always quiet and well behaved.

That was the cutest race i have ever seen. Those little Shetlands can run! And their little feet! Great job for that boy on getting back up. My Shetland would love to do this.

You have never owned a pony have you? They are cute as a button, but unpredictable little stinkers. Kids are always "safer" on larger horses that have less spit haha

Marie Crazyberg do you even know what spurs are? If you couldn’t hurt a horse with them then they weren’t spurs.
@@ivymiller8179 the point of spurs isn’t to hurt a horse. I’ve ridden both with and without and in order to actually get an effect from spurs (especially English spurs) you need to really change the way your heels are angled.
I mean I suppose they could hurt if you kicked them with spurs, depending on how long the spurs are, but just having them on your boots does nothing unless you actually use them.
