Spent 25 years of my life on the track doing this & all--the best time of my life! Still missing it....it gets in the blood. I have no regrets and never will! Worked in Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky from the late 60's. Raced with many well-known jocks, trainers & horses. I love it! That life will always be in my heart--I am a racetracker through and through!
Good afternoon. Exercise riders are the unsung heroes of thoroughbred horse racing and they are usually forgotten by media when the thoroughbred they exercise every morning wins a common or a classic race. Greetings from Venezuela.
You´re welcome. Chicago, nicknamed "The city of cold winds". Home of Arlington Park Racecourse, which hosts "Arlington Million", "Beverly D. Stakes" and "Secretariat Stakes", all Grade I races. When I was a teenager in the Mid-1970´s I tried to become a jockey. But, first, I grew-up too much (I´m 1,68 meters or 5 feet 6 inches) Second, and most important, my dad (RIP) and my mom (RIP too) said to me "No!! That´s very dangerous!" However, I still a horse racing fan since my dad took me to La Rinconada Racecourse in Caracas, Venezuela when I was a 9 year-old kid (I{m 53). Like Hall of Fame Chris Antley said "This is the greatest sport. The Sport of Kings". Have a nice night.

I so miss the horses. Haven't even been on one in more than 17 years (at least) and loved working at the track. Was only a groom there, but was offered a job with the Standardbreds and was helping ponying 2 year olds at the farm when I quit. I know it wasn't much money at the time, but I would do it all over again for the chance to work with the most magnificent beasts on the planet.
i only exercised 5 years in Va. one year i trained when the trainer walked off the job im retired from everthing now im 64 but i still get up at the crack of dawn from those daz...a good time in my life...
I did this for half a summer at Wilsford racing stable. The riding was amazing but the time scale and pressure was horrible. Not for the faint of heart or those that do badly under pressure.
I loved being on my first racehorse bright and early in the morning. I moved from Kentucky to Southern California to keep warm. Years later,I still get up very early without an alarm clock
Really enjoyed your " It's My Job" video Damien. Have you ever ridden at Woodbine? I am retired from business but was lucky enough to get a part time job hot walking , mucking , water buckets , rolling bandages - pretty well everything except grooming. I love it and watching your clip looks just like any track in the morning so to speak and I am sure it will give any young people posting here a great insight as to what it is all about,. Regarding dimensions for exercise riders- I have seen and know all sizes but not - respectfully - real heavy weights. Best of good luck to you and all your co-workers at Keenland.
When I was 11yrs old my mother took me to riding lessons equestrian and fell in love with horses .I grew up in lynnfield ma. I'm a retired Dental laboratory technician and a retired exercise rider. A good rider should know how to do in other things in the stables . I miss it but still watch the horse racing on tvg.
What's it like to ride a race horse? Well imagine riding a motorcycle whose brakes sometimes work and sometimes don't. Whose tires sometimes grip the road and sometimes don't. Whose throttle sometimes sticks wide open and whose shifting mechanism sometimes selects first and sometimes third and where selecting second gear sometimes makes you go in reverse!
To be a jockey you have to be a certain weight and height. But to be an Exercise Rider you don't have to be a certain weight or height. But Exercising is a always a good tip because you need to keep your muscles strong when riding a horse. :) Hope that helped!
I WAS BROUGHT UP WITH HARNESS HORSE AND I WAS VERY TALL WHEN I WAS 16 I ASKED MY PARENTS IF I COULD TRY THE OTHER HALF OF RACING AT TIME I ONLY WAIT 120LBS AND MY DAD KNEW FRANKIE MANN AN RETIRED JOCKEY HE ASKED HIM TO SEE IF HE COULD GET ME JOB , I GOT JOB WITH KATHERINE RENFORD IT WAS THE MOST HAPPIEST SUMMER I HAD BUT THE NEXT YEAR I COULD NOT GO BACK HAS I MATURED AND WEIGHT 175LBS SO THE REST OF MY LIFE HAS BEEN HARNESS HORSES
I hope to go and do a college program on exercise riding once I'm out of high school. I have a question though, do you have to be a certain weight or height to be one? I currently weigh around 140 lbs and that could vary a little, but not too much.

I miss the track terribly, even after all these years! I loved the job!

To be an exercise rider is my dreamjob;D
Really interesting. Seems a good chap: at the end, when he muses on wanting to keep working with horses, you hope that he does. Subbed.

I can’t help but notice how tense the horses are.
My goodness you have a good seat, Damien. That chestnut was feeling good... ( 11:22 )
Hannah Bodner couldn't figure what got the horse worked up. lol
Hannah Bodner haha he was a naughty horse and had dropped many riders lol
I love how he's so positive! :)

Been doing this since 1996! Broken back and broke both feet (12 broken bones total) and I wouldn't change a thing.

140 lbs is too heavy for a jockey but ok for an exercise rider....

oh i would hate training to be a jockey, i can not stand up in my stirrups for anything!
I am surprised that they are wearing jeans. I think jeans are very uncomfortable to ride in. But I guess they know what works.
What are you doing cleaning tack?...leave that to the W2 ex-riders. Good video. Nice to share our business.
It’s his own tack he is cleaning for the next day.
