  • You guys had many questions about tonguing on clarinet and other wind instruments and I have some answers! I tried to go over a few techniques (single, double, flutter tonguing) as well as how I mimic double tonguing trumpet players on clarinet.

    Maybe a helpful detail for those that don't play, when you 'tongue' you are momentarily stoppping the flow of air that is going into the instrument in a repeated manner.

    🤣 love how the flutter tongue sounds like the old Model T car horns. AaaOOOgaaa

    Then there’s me… been playing for 25 years and I’ve literally never tongued a note on the clarinet or sax 😅 it drove my middle school teacher crazy because I always used my throat.

    Thank you for sharing how to do this tech (you had explained it to me in a comment on that video, but I understand much better now) I think you should name this so we can refer to it like the other versions of tonguing.

      Haha, I think there is probably a reason people don't do this very often... it's really hard to maintain the accuracy and speed continuously for more than a few beats because you get exhausted quickly. The people who double tongue properly can play for a long time without sacrificing accuracy... it's just not something that reed players usually learn since it's not called for in most music

      @@thesaxninja makes sense though! Thanks for responding.
      How about "Fluthertonguing" (like saying fluttertonguing with the "th" sound)? I know it sounds kinda funny, but it is accurate to the mechanism/sound though ;^;

    I’m also a jazz saxophonist and I’ve been doing the same technique as you since high school (I’m 37). I thought I was the only one! Glad to see someone else master what I’ve been calling “controlled flutter tonguing”. 😁

    I had no idea. Use your tongue to play instruments.

    Very cool. I use "tucka toodle" when playing harmonica.

    That is kinda like what i do on harmonica. You are kinda tongue blocking which i do and syllables are how the train sound is made. Nuka tuka . I really like your videos, very interesting on common differences

      Oh wow! I didn't know that harmonica players use similar tonguing techniques for such different sounding results... that's so cool!

    It is possible for woodwinds to annunciate syllables such as, “Tu-Cu”, “Tu-Du”, or “Ta-Ca”, but the embouchure has to adjust slightly so that the seal over the mouthpiece stays intact.

    Does your method work on the saxophone too?

    • @thesaxninja
      @thesaxninja  3 месяца назад +1

      It does, but the bigger the reed/ mouthpiece the harder it is to control, so it is slightly slower on the bigger instruments
