  • There are times when the outcome of a project is far removed from the original conception and this is a great example of when that works out in a positive sense. When I began restoring this tool cabinet I had no idea that I would end up giving it a completely new look in the process but the end result is awesome. Come along as we go through the steps required to turn a rusted barn find tool box into a thing of beauty. Let's get busy!

    My dad gave me that top box box 27 years ago when I first started wrenching professionally. When he gave it to me it had been restored with a snapon emblem. My snapon man could never identify the box, I couldnt find nothing online about it until I watched your channel and realized what I had. I still use the box professionally to this day.

      Wow! You may have had an old box that actually was a Snap On. MBC did make these for Snap On but I think that arrangement ended by the 1960's.

      Thanks! MBC built these for Snap On so you may have the exact same box. I did eventually figure out how to remove the drawers and made a short video about how to do it in case you need it.

    Nice hobby. Sometimes the pay back is the satisfaction of bringing something back that just needed a little work to be functional and pretty. If you have to explain it the person who asked the question will never understand.

    on the older Craftsman boxes you pulled the drawer all the way out held the slide pushed the drawer in 1/4'' holding the slide still and inserted a thick feeler gauge and it pushed a small metal clip over and the drawer would slide all the way out

    In reference to your questions about the original color, red is probably the worst color for fade, and was even worse 30 years ago. Look at some surface shielded from light, such the bottom of a drawer. This will give you a more accurate color match. I'm leaning toward the original color being "toolbox red", as most were. Originally paint was probably liquid spray paint, possibly electro deposited, which minimizes waste. The drawer slides are apparently identical to Snap On of similar vintage, and the box would have come with two strips of metal about 1/2" wide and 6" long, made of steel similar to feeler gage and about .030" thick. There is a slight bend at the end, about 1/4" or so in. With the intermediate slide pulled all the way out, and the drawer pushed in a couple of inches, insert the metal strip in the slide, with the bent end away from the slide, then carefully pull the drawer out. The latch is a metal flat spring in the center of the slide, running against a tab to keep the drawer from being withdrawn. Ask your Snap On man for a pair of the slide unlatch tools, and/or advice. I think they may still be using this design!

    • @floridarusticrepairs
      @floridarusticrepairs  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the tip! I looked up the drawer removal with the bend as you suggested and that's how it works! I had the right idea but I didn't have the bend. Great info! I just painted a 1960's grey and red Craftsman and I used Rustoleum High Performance red. Doesn't match at all but looks great. :)

    I would never tap on the badge posts. Most are weak pot metal and you risk breaking the post on a rare and un-replaceable key component of the box. The clips for a 3/16” post are $6.99 for (30) on Zoro. Others sizes available. Gently bend back the clip away from the post and replace with new. The alternative is risky at best. BTW, I subscribed after watching my first video from your channel. Look forward to watching many of the items similar to what I restore. I also collect vintage Snap-on toolboxes for restoration, but I dislike the red and am using more up to date colors.

    • @floridarusticrepairs

      I can't argue with you on tapping those posts. I cross my fingers any time I resort to that. I've got an old Snap On box set in my garage I plan on getting to eventually. What color do you use? The original reds are impossible to match anyway. Thanks for subscribing!

Eagle Just wanted to say in my day we used the tools, it wasn't about the toolbox other than to hold the tools in. Not saying it's completely wrong but people have the shiny tools they never use them, they just keep them polished up so everybody can look at them A tool is for working with, not for looking at, Get a painting by Rembrandt to look at. don't get me wrong, I still like sharp looking things like your toolbox Nice.
